Time Machine using Leopard- can't get it started

I have an iMac OS 10.5.8 using along with a 1GB Lacie drive. I used Disk Utilities to create two partitioned volumes in the external drive, one partition for saving the backup of Time Machine and the second for just storing extra file from my main iMac computer. The partition volume in the external drive was formattaed "Mac)S Exended (journalled)". Here is where I got confused! The second Option is to chose between "Erase Free Space" and "Security Options". I chose "Erase Free Space". But shouild I have chosen "Security Options" instead? During this time the Time Machine was OFF. At the conclusion of the "Erase Free Space" which took 3 hours, I turned on Time Machine but I did not get the result I was expected in backup files. What did I do wrong and what should I be doing? I am beginnng to wonder if I should just forget about TM and use some other backup application which you might recommend to me??? Thanks for any help. Abit frustrated at this point!

bad idea. the data on the second partition will not be backed up. if you value it you should reconsider this arrangement. get another drive for storage and back up both the internal and the storage external with TM.

Don't. don't use erase free space at all. it's not needed and will only waste time. it's just a security procedure that overwrites free space with zeros to prevent data recovery. instead, make sure that the drive is formatted properly. make sure that the partition is GUID. if it isn't then repartition the drive with correct partition scheme.

if the drive is already partitioned correctly then erase the TM partition using the erase tab. but don't use secure erase or erase free space.
then go to TM system preferences, set up TM to back up to this drive and turn it on. that's it.

you want to clarify that? what result did you get and what did you expect to get?

  • HT201250 I use time machine and I can't get a certain backup to allow restore

My MBPro stopped booting up. I got it up and running again after reinstalling everything(OSX and all). I am now running Mountain Lion, could this be causing problems seeing all the non Mountain Lion era backups. I can only restore those dates now, no older than upgrade date ones.
I hooked up my time machine drive and now I can't get a certain date to make itself available for "Restore" the latest date that lights up that button in Time Machine is the date I did the reinstall. How do I get my excel files I made back onto my computer.
Other issue is where are Excel files kept in the MAC's file structure. I know the were backed up, but I can't see them when I am using Finder to look within each subfolder in Time Machine.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you turn on the new iMac for the first time, Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so connect the external disk and follow steps to restore all your files to your new iMac. Your new Mac will have the same settings and programs as your old computer.
In other cases, I would recommend to restore the whole backup without using Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant, but a Late 2012 iMac uses a special OS X build, so the OS X version that you're using on your old Mac won't work on the new one. • Can´t upgrade to mountain Lion because says that my HD is only for Time Machine use

Can´t upgrade to mountain Lion because says that my HD is only for Time Machine use, what can I do?

The installer is probably finding a file called backups.backupdb
That is where Time Machine stores it backups so it figures it can't install there
The Time Machine backup should never be done to the system drive but another drive instead

    Use Migration Assistant http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4413
If you previousley backed up from OS X Lion you won't be able to restore to a Snow Leopard partition

I've just received Snow Leopard disc and tried to install it but nothign is ever that easy.  It says that hard drive in use for Time Machine backup so can't install.  I've never used Time Machine and settings appear to confirm that.  I don't want to set it to restore and lose everything and have to install it again so not sure what to do.  Can anyone advise me

  • Can Time Machine use a local server as a back up location

We have this really nice D-Link NAS with 4 drives set to Raid 5....and would LOVE to let Time Machine use it as a backup location.
Will Time Machine allow a server to hold its back up files?
    Many thanks.

Time Machine does not back up to network drives, except Time Capsules or USB drives connected to an Airport Extreme, or a drive on a Leopard server.
    Here's the official word: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1733
You may find some "hacks" that might make it work, in some cases, to a degree. But use them at your own risk.
First, since this is *unsupported by Apple,* there's nowhere to go when there's trouble.
Second, you're risking a future update preventing it from working, and perhaps rendering your backups useless.
If you still think this is a good idea, do yourself a favor before you bet your backups on it: be sure it really works, at least for now:
    1. Get a copy of CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper! or the like, and make a full bootable clone of your internal HD, on an external disk. Test it by booting from it. Then reboot from your internal HD.
    2. Let TM do it's first, full, initial backup.
    3. Attempt a full system restore (like you'll need when, not if, your internal HD fails), via the instructions in item 14 of the +Frequently Asked Questions+ post at the top of this forum.
Again, even if it works now, tomorrow is another day . . .

The same thing happened recently between Final Cut Express and my other LaCie external hard drive used as the Scratch disk. It fixed itself.
I've run out of ideas. Help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

have you done some searches on FCPx and time machine? Is there a known issue with using a TM drive with FCPx? dunno but ...wait...I'll take 60 sec for you cause I'm just that kind of guy....   google...." fcpx time machine problem"  Frist page link

MacPro backed up to Time Machine, added Mac Mini now get "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/Jerry Booher’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use." error when Mac Pro tries to back up

It is standard Mountain Lion error due to the networking ability which is comparable to wet string. (actually that was lion.. it dried out some with Mountain Lion.. higher in the hills perhaps!!)
    See C12 and C17

But many people are suffering the same issue..
And the above is even a little out of date.. you might need to do a reset to the TC.

  • Im trying to install Mavericks but It tells I can't use my HD because its being use by Time Machine. What can I do?

I'm trying to intall Mavericks on my HD but it tells me that I can not install it beause Time Machine uses the this HD. I have turn off the Time Machine and even removed all portions from the drive. What else can I do?

You shouldn't install an OS on Time Machine drive. You should upgrade from the existing internal HD that your previous OS was on.

The TIme Machine volume does not have that checkbox.
I think the issue is with your Finder...
Go to Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences trash these files:
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Then, restart, or log out and in again.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

  • HT201250 Hi, I had updated folder on my hard drive wich was wrongly replaced with a folder from my external drive. I m not using time machine. How can i recover that updated folder? (it was done on 3-5-12)

Hi, I had updated folder on my hard drive wich was wrongly replaced with a folder from my external drive. I m not using time machine. How can i recover that updated folder? (it was done on 3-5-12)

If the folder was replaced, it was written over.
Nothing short of forensic data recovery (probably involving taking the drive apart to scan the discs seperately) is going to recover anything (if indeed even that will).

  • Has anyone enabled time machine using a linksys router and external hard drive? And if so how?

Has anyone enabled time machine using a link sys router and external hard drive? And if so how?  I have a Linksys E4200 wireless router with a usb port on it.  I also have a Western Digital Elements 1TB external hard drive.  I would like to be able to use this hard drive with time machine.  Has anyone done so and if so how can I do so?

You might get some responses, but we don't see many Linksys users on an Apple forum so it may be awhile before you see an answer.
It might be useful to point out that Apple does not even support Time Machine backups to the USB port on their own AirPort Extreme wireless router, so we may be heading down a very slippery slope here.
I've tried Time Machine backups on an AirPort Extreme router a number of times in the past. It's just not reliable. Works for awhile, then has corruption problems. Or has corruption issues immediately. I once went a month or so and thought I had it nailed, then got smacked with a corrupted set of backups again.
But, I guess you never know. It might work on the Linksys. If you decide to try this, I would suggest that you have another backup plan in place for your important data.
Hope that some Linksys users will respond so we can all learn.

  • Just did a system restore from my time machine and I can not find any of my files from my desktop.  How can I find them?

I am a new apple user...sorry it took so long.  I did a recovery from my time machine but I can not find any of the filesI was saving on my desktop.  Are they gone for good or is there some way I can get them back?  I am desperate...should I save my regular used files somewhere else other than my desktop?
Can I get the old desktop files back????

When you open TM you should see all of the desktop items right away.  If they are not there, go back a day before you  made your last retrieval.  (Look for the dates on the time line on the right hand side of the display)
    Ciao.
