Time Machine - WHOLE COMPUTER CRASHES!

I upgraded to Leopard the day it came out and Time Machine worked like a charm. As soon as I installed 10.5.1 when the backup gets to the very end the entire machine crashes (kernel crash) and I am forced to restart my computer. If I leave Time Machine running it will crash every single time it reaches the end of the backing up process.
Machine: Mac Mini Core-Duo 1.66
Backup Drive: WD My Book 500GB via USB
On another note, ever since I upgraded to 10.5.1 the firewire ports on my drive have been rendered useless. They won't work on any computer. My LaCie drive works fine via firewire so I know it can't be the computer's firewire port.
Any help will bring much appreciation and thanks!

I am not too sure as I am not an expert on OS, see whether you can do the following:-
1. Change your source disk's name and make sure there is not space or /,- in between
2. Change your target disk's name as item 1 with a different name of course
3. disable to spotlight

    Sorry, but no.
Time Machine will backup your Mac, but not the hard drive attached to the AirPort Extreme.
Time Machine will back up a hard drive only if it is attached directly to your Mac via USB or FireWire.

All you need to upgrade the iBook for Tiger is another 128 MBs of RAM. It has both Firewire and USB ports. You do want to upgrade it for what you plan to do. The problem you may continue to have, however, may be due to the fact that the age of the computer is such the disk controller does not support hard drive volumes larger than 128 GBs, which is probably the reason the drive won't mount.
The reason you get DU errors is likely because the drive was formatted using the Intel Tiger version of DU, while you were using the Jaguar version. That's a definite no-no.

  • TechTool Pro copying large "deleted" files when I Time Machine my computer

I have TechTool Pro 5 loaded on my MacBook Pro. I've noticed when I Time Machine the computer, about 4 gig is always (or seems to be) copied over to the time machine drive in files named "Trash Deletes". It puts them in my Application Support folder in my library.
Is this TechTool backing up my emptying the trash - if so, it sure is taking up a lot of space o the time machine drive? Hopefully, I'm wrong here. I use "Timetracker" to see what files are being backed up thru Time Machine.
Anyone else out there notice this?
    Thanks,
    Larry

Although I own an older version of TT Pro I do not have it installed. I do not remember exactly what they install that is running in the background. What you might do, if it isn't in the documentation, is download Easy Find - CNet Downloads or MacUpdate - and use it to search for "techtool" or "micromat" which should find the item or items. However, I'm almost sure you could disable it in TT Pro's control panel for what to install.

  • Time machine on Lion crashes the whole system when used with external HD

    Hi all,
Anybody got the same problem? I did a Time Machine backup just before I did the upgrade to Lion (using an external USB HDD) after the upgrade (that went well in my opinion) when I ask TM to do another backup it stays on "Preparing" indefenately and ultimately crashes the whole system ( reset with ctrl+cmd+power button) is required otherwhise the system stays non reactive.
    Regards,
    Iwan

Start by verifying your internal HD, and repair your backups, per #6 in Using Disk Utility.
If that doesn't help, see #D6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for a possible way to cancel the backup.  If that works, use the widget in #A1 there to display the backup messages from your logs.  Locate the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages here.

  • Unlocking my Time Machine backup drive crashes computer.

Unlocking my external hard drive crashes my computer. It was encrypted by Time Machine (and I think that means it used FileVault because the unlock window has the FileVault icon).
There's a prompt to unlock the hard drive as soon as I plug it in but when I press the Unlock button my computer crashes.
I've tried different user accounts, safe mode, disk utility, recovery mode, different USB cables and different USB ports all with the same problem. As soon as I press enter on the password prompt the system crashes. If I type the wrong password it denies me so I know the password is correct.
The drive is in a SATA to USB dock but unfortunately I don't have another one to test with. Other drives work just fine in this dock.
The data recovery software I tried is useless because all the data is encrypted .
Any suggestions? Is my drive done and my data lost?
    Thanks, Chris

  • I'm afraid Time Machine use to crash hard drives

Now it happened again - this time a Time Machine partion on my Seagate FreeAgent 500 GB external drive is damaged.
I can see Backups.backupdb but can't copy it on another hard drive. Restore is also impossible. There's no owner, the error message says. And the partition is marked as unwritable.
Since I use Time Machine this is the second hard drive with troubles.
Am I the only one with this problem?
    Cheers

Thanks for this hint. I wouldn't have written in this forum if I haven't tried all possibilities.
You'd be surprised how rare that is!
What errors did DU find that it couldn't fix?
My Mac is running on a german system - so maybe the words are not exactly the same as in the english version after my translation.
First error message was shown like "Disk utility can't repair, save your data immediately" - so I've tried to copy the database to another volume - which failed. In the meantime the disk is writeprotected and the error messages says: "can't copy because there is no owner".
That sounds like the messages here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3275?viewlocale=de_DE
I can usually figure out which is which by comparing the English version and picking out the handful of German words I know, but this one seems to be arranged differently than the English version. See if what you're seeing in German is the rough equivalent of +"The disk (volume name) was not repairable by this computer. it is being made available to you with limited functionality. You must back up your data and reformat the disk as soon as possible."+
If so, then your backups are corrupted and your disk may be failing.
You can't copy TM backups via the Finder in Leopard anyway, and if they're corrupted, you probably can't copy them with the Restore tab of Disk Utility either.
If you have a heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app like +Disk Warrior+ (version 4.1.1 or later), it might be able to repair them. If you don't, it's probably not worth the expense (DW is about $100 U.S.) to get it just for this.
You might be able to reformat the drive and let TM start over, but even if that works, I don't think I'd trust my backups to it if I were you.
The whole disaster seems to be a physical problem. Somebody in another forum is talking about that Time Machine prevents the parking of the heads - head crashes are more likely.
Rubbish. Since Time Machine runs hourly at most, the drive isn't used most of the time. And if you'd had a head crash, the disk would be totally unusable -- DU wouldn't even see it.

  • System recovery from time machine after disk crash

    Hi there,
recently I am a little unluky with my backup strategy. Here is my latest issue - I am glad if anyone has hints or advice.
On my macbook pro (mid 2009, originally SL) updated till the latest version of Mavericks I recently had a hard disc crash. I replaced the hard drive and wanted to restore my system (and data) from my time machine backup. This Backup is encrypted (in case this gives a hint for something).
What I did is I insert the Snow leopard disk, boot from it and first formated the new HD to the suggested standard for intel based MACs and then chose the option to restore from a time machine backup. I found the time capsule, connected with password, found the backed up files with date and tried to install.
    First attemp failed.
    Second attemp succed after 10h
Then with the mandatory reboot the system didn't start but stopped with:
    panic(cpu 1 caller...
So I decided to install the SL system and try to restore from there in whatever way. Did that and 1 hour later the installation was successfully - Reboot - and then the computer asked for my Log in data (with my Log in Name - which I so far did not set on this installation or on this disk - very suprised. More suprised my password (which I use for 4 years now) did not work.
so back to option 1 try to restore from Time machine.
Ahead of that I reset the PRAM . Now I choose a backup version of an earlier date. This time the installation couldn't be finished but I got the log file.
I couldn't attach the file and didn't want to post it over severl pages...(is there a good way for that, only found adding pictures?)
    Well - that's where I am stuck...
Any help is apreciated very much.

Thank you Eric for your fast answer.
this worked and now I have a running SL system. I guess I try to install maverics first and then use the emigration assistent to recover my data.
Still its a pitty that the time machine backup didn't do what it was supposed to. The workarround is very timeconsuming and leaves some concerns about my data and the future safety of time machine backups.
    Regards
    Thorsten

  • Time machine after hardrive crash

My hardrive on my macbook pro crashed in December. I got a new one from apple, had everything saved on my time machine, and put all my documents on my the new hardrive (still saved in TM). Just now, I downloaded updates for my computer, and it seems that all my files created since having the new hardrive installed are gone, yet the old ones are here. Can I get the new ones back?

    How did you do that?
If you used +Migration Assistant,+ you may have an extra user account, and you may be logged-on to the wrong one.

  • Restore from Time Machine  after HD Crash

My Powerbook HD crashed - it had been backed up with Time Machine to an external hard drive. My new hard drive has been installed. I started up with my Leopard Upgrade install DVD. The first screen that comes up says this software can't be installed on this computer. I clicked OK. Then the tool bar is accessible. Under utilities I selected "Restore from Back up" and nothing happens no indication that it is doing anything. I checked under system profiler and my external hard drive with the back up shows up. But it does not show up on the desktop. What should I see on my screen when I choose Restore from the utilities? I just see the Leopard Purple screen desktop. Please help. I have re-started, shut down and started over several times with the same results.

Thanks for the link Pondini, all of that sounds very good, but reality hits when you read posts like this thread. The great thing here is that it worked, but as you see, it was not a straightforward process in reality. It took twists and turns and frustration and menu's that didn't say what they should have.
All in all I'm very happy to hear that TM brought home the goods and made this user's day complete.
I have partitioned 2x the size of my system hard drive on my new LaCie backup drive. That partition will be all the room I am giving to TM. I do not have any documents on my system hard drive, so it is basically a very quiet drive with little going on other than the occasional software update. I think TM will be happy with 2x the size for backup because also, I only use 1/3 of the system drive for applications, the rest is blank. I do all of my work on external drives and I use conventional means to back up my work onto other drives.
I think I am becoming well versed in TM after the OP's experience here. As added insurance, I made another partition on my backup drive and have used SuperDuper to clone the entire system drive, just as more bullet-proof protection against the day when.
Thanks to everyone here. This has been an exciting thread to say the least. Glad it's over,
    Ken

  • Time Machine and computer name change

I just recently reinstalled the operator system after a computer crash when i did so changed the computer name and now when i go into time machine to restore the settings it only shows up as one sparse disc image.
i have found that when i can mount it manually but the files are not usable and when i mount it with time machine the history does not appear.

Go to System Preferences - Sharing and change the computer name there. You can also, optionally, change the name of your hard drive to further clarify the origin of your backups. Click once on the "Macintosh HD" on your desktop, then click its name to allow you to edit it.

My computer consistently locks up when Time Machine is running in background. At least I think it's Time Machine. Start using it as soon as I upgraded to Leopard. I am very tired of restarting everytime I return to my computer after being away an hour or two.

i checked the particular file its been crashing over and really is a very simple text file.
bizarre that such a fundamental app like spotlight ( mds ) is failing over trivial data and messing up a backup. who cares whether a file can be indexed or not, i want it backed up...

  • Time Machine thinks computer hard drive is  644245120.0 GB

    Hi All,
So just the other day while I was in the middle of a time machine backup my OS crashed. I got that "you must restart your computer" message on the screen so I restarted my computer.
Today I tried backing up with time machine again and I got this message
    *"TIME MACHINE ERROR"*
+This backup is too large for the backup volume. The backup requires 644245120.0 GB but only 271.3 GB are available.+
+To select a larger volume, or make the backup smaller by exluding files, open system preferences and choose Time Machine.+
What the heck? I wish my hard drive was that big unfortunately it isn't, it's only an 80gig.
I tried deleting the "In Progress" and "Latest" files from the backup folder on the external HD but that didn't work. I also tried restarting a couple times but that didn't help either.
Has anyone else experienced this or have any tips for me? I haven't been able to find any other threads on this issue but if there are any let me know.
    I'm running a PowerBook G4 15" 2GB RAM.
My external HD is a 500GB Western Digial MyBook
    Thanks
    Ben

    Hello Ben:
The crash probably caused some directory problems.
Try to fix things by running repair disk from your software install DVD on both disks (internal and external).
Delete the TM preference file (com.apple.timemachine.plist) and restart.
    Barry
P.S. If none of that works, you are probably going to need to erase and reformat the external HD.
