Hi again!
1.) Start Net Manager from Windows Startmenu
2.) In the treeview on the left side click on the + adjacent to LOCAL
3.) Click on the node LISTENER
4.) Click on the green + in the menubar on the left side
5.) Type in a name for your LISTENER. I suggest to use LISTENER as the name because that's the default.
6.) Click on OK button
7.) Save your networkconfiguration and exit.
That's all.
Best Regards
Florian W.

I've oracle 11g installed on Windows Server 2003.
I have installed oracle 11g twice, so wasn't sure how to uninstall one version without effecting the other.

If there are forums you would recommend to a completely new oracle sysadmin please let me know.
    Many thanks.

I recommend you read the '2 Days DBA' manual in order to get a basic understanding. It may be necessary to uninstall the current installation(s), especially the last error message looks like a corrupted environment.

  • Opening another port in Oracle

    Hi,
If I have an Oracle database listening on port 1521, is it possible to open another port for listening? What must I do to achieve that? What I had tried out is to create a listener using net assistant. Then, I create another service name for that. But I keep on receiving no TNSListener error when I test the service.
Am I on the correct path?
    Thanks in advance.

You definitely are on the right path. See if the listener you created is running or not when you try to connect thru that listener.
To check the listener, you can see the service using start->settings->control panel->services
or you can also use lsnrctl.exe in ur Oracle_home/bin directory

  • Lost power, tnslistener 12514 error

    All,
We recently lost power and a server that shouldn't have been in production anymore is apparently something that needs to be online. I'm not a DBA by any stretch, so this is a bit over my head. It's running oracle 10g services on top of a Windows 2003 standard server. The error I receive, even trying to connect to SQL Plus among other utilities is: ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor.
There's nothing obvious in the event viewer and listener.log has this at the tail end:

  • TNSLISTENER Application Error

    Hi,
I have installed the Oracle 9i (9.2.0.1 RC2) Database on Windows 2000 Workstation. When I try to create a new database or I try to connect a repository the TNSLSNR.EXE crashes. I receive the following OS error message: "TNSLSNR.EXE Application Error: memory read error". After this I have to restart the listener service.
    What can you advise?
    Thanks and regards,
    Steve

I have configured the database manually after installing Oracle, instead of letting it install a default DB. If thats what you're doing you gotta use oradim to create the instance with a pfile u created or a sample one u got.
oradim -h will give u the options, then start your instance with oradim, and then sqlplus/nolog connect sys/manager as sysdba, then startup, then maybe your listener error will go away or maybe im way off.

  • Socket read error: connection reset by peer

    Hi.
Has anybody experienced the error message Socket read error: connection reset by peer
Please see below for detailed information.
    Appreciate your help
    Regards
    RT
    Enviroment specification
    Server: HP/UX 11.00 64-bit, Oracle RDBMS 8.1.6.0.0 64-bit
2 firewalls between client and db.
    Client:
    Win 2000,
    SP3,
Oracle Client 8.1.7.0.0 ,JDBC OCI (thin JDBC driver,class12.zip)
    JDK 1.3
    JRUN3.0
The TCP protocol is being used in the communication
    Error messages
Web Users receive:           Socket read error: connection reset by peer
Trace files on the sever:      Read unexpected EOF ERROR on 18.
Explanation: The error in the server sqlnet trace file, suggests that a client connection has terminated abnormally, i.e. client machine powered off, a cable removed or a network connection aborted without warning. No user has complained of such a problem and there is no client trace with an error.
    The problem
The users of the java web application, experiencing an exception almost once or twice a day.
The JRUN web-server reports broken connections to the db and client are receiving "connection reset by peer".
At the moment when the errors occurs the users just have to wait a while(2-10 min) and then they can use the web application again.(no action is taken)
This problem can not be reproduced. The problem happens only occasionally when the network is under heavy load and new DB connection is being created.
    The application
The java web-application uses a customized connection pooling against the database. This pool is shared among all the users of the website. whenever a user process needs to fetch data from the database, a free connection from this pool is allocated. The application is testing if the connection is valid before making a transaction (select '1' from dual). When the error occurs a ORA-3113 end-of-file on communication channel is returned to the application.
The path between the client and db involves at least two firewalls. The firewalls are opened for sql*net traffic. The network group can tell that enquiries from the app.server is not getting feedback from the db. They have not however, identified if the enquiries are reaching the db-srever, or if they are stopped earlier in the network.
Around 1000 users, are using other applications which uses dedicated sqlnet connections against the db and they have not experienced any problems.
    Issues considered
    Connection pooling
It is a customized connection pooling, developed by Lindorff developers.
I have read through the source code for the connection pooling and it does the job as it should, and in case of bad connection, it tries to create a new connection.
The log file shows that the call to the method DriverManager.getConnection() hangs until the server goes down, which is probably because of the fact that the method DriverManager.setLoginTimeout(), does not take effect and timeout value is Zero. ( According to oracle , Oracle JDBC does not support login timeouts and calling the static DriverManager.setLoginTimeout() method will have no effect).
    Firewall
One thing to consider is when the firewall may decide to shut down the socket due to long inactivity of a connection. This will cause problems to JDBC Connection Pool because the pool is not aware of this disconnection at the TCP/IP level; until someone checks out the connection from the pool and tries to use it. The user will get a Socket read error: connection reset by peer.
Jrun timeout paramter is less than the firewalls timeout so the firewall will not close a connection before Jrun does.
Number of processes the DB can handle
Processes parameter is 1300, , they have not experienced the Oracle error msg max # of processes reached.
    Port redirection through a firewall:
Since the firewall has a sql net proxy Port redirection through a firewall is not a problem. Problems with port redirection only appear at connect time, but in this situation the connections fail long after the connection is established.
    The network group
The network people who investigaged the problem at Lindorff report that there are a significant amount of "dropped packages" between the database server and the jdbc client (web-application) 24 hrs. The reason for this is "unknown established TCP packet" which means that the firewall does not consider these packages to be part of an already established session. The network group believes this happen because one of the hosts send a RESET or FIN signal which the firewall have noticed but are not received by the other host.
It seems like the firewall are dropping packages bacause of "Unknown
established TCP packet" from both the JDBC client and the TNSLISTENER on the database server. The dropped packages are SQL*Net v2 traffic so clearly Oracle products are involved

    Presumably something is working.
Thus the problem is not with your code. At least not the database part that you have control over.
That error occurs when the other side closes the socket. Presumably you are catching lost connection exceptions and trying to restore it.

  • Installation error with 8.1.7

I'm currently upgrading 8.0.5 with 8.1.7. When installing 8.1.7 I receive the following error message:
O/S error in starting service Oracleora81DataGatherer
Has anyone seen this and is there a fix?
    thanks
    Mark

I have installed 8.1.7. on windows 2ooo. The install went
successfully and immediately after the install i could connect
    with scott/tiger.
After a short period of time I can no longer connect and receive
the ora-12560 error. The system has not been rebooted or even
touched during this time period. I have removed the database
with dbassist and recreated. Again it works for 5 mins and
    stops.
When I look at tsnrctl status all looks great. Under services
the tnslistener is working properly. I can do a tnsping as well.
    >
I just cannot connect to the database.
    Please help!
Dan Hoover An ORA-12560 WinNT is usually an indication that
the OS system/environment is not set up correctly.
You don't need a listener when you connect locallay without alias
    name (sqlplus scott/tiger@alias).
    Please try the following:
    - start cmd box
    - set ORACLE_HOME = <your home>
    - set ORACLE_SID = <your SID>
    - sqlplus scott/tiger

    Hi,
Please check up if any TNSListener (of older version , from previously installed RDBMS ) is already running in the system.
    Statup->controlpanel->Services->%TNSListener%.
If so, please Stop the listener, while you install the oracle.
Else, While you install oracle, don't create starter database.First install Oracle, after that, create the DB using "Database configuration Assistant(DCA)", life will be easier!!

  • 10g stopped working after 11g installed. Getting ORA-12514: error

    I had Oracle 10g installed in win2000 sp2. with port 1521.
I have installed Oracle 11g on the same system. with port 1522.
I am able to start both the instances and tnslistener but I am not able to connect to Oracle10g database. Getting following error.
ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect

I have done the following check.

I am not able to see my tek10g 10g database details.
I also checked my tnsnames.ora file which has the entries properly.
    Sqlnet.ora file has
    SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS)
    NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH= (TNSNAMES, EZCONNECT)
How to solve this issue? Is that possible to run oracle 10g and oracle 11g in same host?
    Thanks in Advance...
    regards,
    Manikandan

The approach I would take, in general is:
    1) pick a listener, and only one. Get that working.
    2) Make sure all the databases register to that listener
    3) Fix the TNSNAMES.ORA files appropriately.
    To fix the listener
    1) Verify the listener address matches the current environment
    SID_LIST_LISTENER =
      (SID_LIST =
        (SID_DESC =
          (SID_NAME = PLSExtProc)
          (ORACLE_HOME = C:\oracle\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server)
          (PROGRAM = extproc)
        (SID_DESC =
          (SID_NAME = CLRExtProc)
          (ORACLE_HOME = C:\oracle\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server)     << - MUST point to correct HOME
          (PROGRAM = extproc)
    LISTENER =
      (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
        (DESCRIPTION =
          (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC_FOR_XE))
          (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = myHOST)(PORT = myPORT))
      )where
myHOST is this host's resolvable name or IP address
myPORT is the port (default 1521) that the listener should monitor
The HOST is often a problem if the machine uses DHCP.
    2) Register the databases
On startup, database will auto-register to the listener defined in the init parameter 'LOCAL_LISTENER', which defaults to 'HOST={current_host}, PORT=1521'
After startup, if the listener is taken down, you can register each database manually using the DBA command
    ALTER SYSTEM REGISTER;
Either way, it should show up in the output of 'lsnrctl status'
While you are accessing the database, you might want to find out which services the database supports. That can be done in SQLPlus using the command
    SHOW PARAMETER SERVICE_NAMES
Note that the database name is the default service name.
    3) Fix [all] the TNSNAMES.ORA file[s].
Each SERVICE_NAME from the previous list that you want to access from this client, yu should find an entry that looks like
    myTEST =
      (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = myHOST)(PORT = myPORT))
        (CONNECT_DATA =
          (SERVER = DEDICATED)
          (SERVICE_NAME = mySERVICE)
myTEST is the alias I want to look up by using it as the connect target string.
myHOST should match the HOST= entry in the LISTENER.ORA
myPORT MUST match the PORT= entry in the LISTENER.ORA
mySERVICE is the Service to which I am asking the listener to connect me, as found in the lsnrctl status output
