  • How to read SGML files using Java

    I've got a text categorisation test collection called Reuters-21578 for my Information Retrieval project. It is distributed in 22 files. Each of the first 21 files (reut2-000.sgm through reut2-020.sgm) contains 1000 documents, while the last (reut2-021.sgm) contains 578 documents. The files are in SGML format. Each of the 22 files begins with a document type declaration line:
    <!DOCTYPE lewis SYSTEM "lewis.dtd"> The DTD file lewis.dtd is included in the distribution. Following the document type declaration line are individual Reuters articles marked up with SGML tags.
    My questions is how to write a java program to read those 21578 documents or transform them into 21578 seperated text files.

    I guess I missed something. What is Renes link?. The
    parser stuff isn't really what I'm looking for. I'm
    a new at and just learning java and I just want to
    know the easiest way to read a SGML file. Should I
    use a buffered Reader with a Pushback Input Stream?Hang on.....you want to just read the file without intelligently extracting the SGML data contained within and so have no need of a parser?
    Well, in that case, its just text.....so just use BufferedReader or whatever to read the text data. If I understand you correctly, all you really wanted to ask was "how do I read a text file?"

    just doing a quick Google came up with some pages:

    http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/javaqa/2000-09/03-qa-0922-access.html
    Both articles explains how to use the jdbc-odbc bridge. I think I've seen a pure jdbc driver for access but it wasn't from Microsoft and it wasn't free.

  • Read a file using java

    Please help

    sorry for the unrelated nitpick, but please avoid unnecessary abbreviations in your posts here. I recommend this for several reasons:
    1) Programming is an exercise in precision. When you communicate here (or anywhere) about programming issues and questions, you want this communication to be as clear as possible to avoid any chance for ambiguity. I'd say at least half the answers here are requests for clarification. Let's avoid that.
    2) For many here, English is not their first (or second or third) language. It's hard enough for them to understand what people are posting here much less if it's couched in obscure and non-standard abbreviations.
    3) Extra letters don't cost anything here, so you might as well use them.
    4) It makes the poster seem a bit immature and thus for some not worthy of help.

    I don't understand your question.
    If you don't know how to use TreeMap why do you think a TreeMap is the correct solution for what you want to do?
    If you are just asking how to use TreeMap then there are PLENTY of tutorials on the internet and the Java API provides the methods that area available.
    TreeMap (Java Platform SE 7 )
    Are you sure you want a map and not a tree instead?

  • How to read a text file using Java

    Guys,
    Good day!
    Please help me how to read a text file using Java and create/convert that text file into XML.
    Thanks and God Bless.
    Regards,
    I-Talk

         public void fileRead(){
                 File aFile =new File("myFile.txt");
             BufferedReader input = null;
             try {
               input = new BufferedReader( new FileReader(aFile) );
               String line = null;
               while (( line = input.readLine()) != null){
             catch (FileNotFoundException ex) {
               ex.printStackTrace();
             catch (IOException ex){
               ex.printStackTrace();
         }This code is to read a text file. But there is no such thing that will convert your text file to xml file. You have to have a defined XML format. Then you can read your data from text files and insert them inside your xml text. Or you may like to read xml tags from text files and insert your own data. The file format of .txt and .xml is far too different.

  • How to print a text file using Java

    How can I print a text file using Java without converting the output to an image format. Is there anyway I can send the characters in the text file as it is for a print job? I did get a listing doing this ... but that converted the text to an image format before printing....
    THanks,.

    Hi I had to write a print api from scratch, and I did not convert the output to image. Go and read up on the following code. I know there is a Tutorial on Sun about the differant sections of the snippet.
    private void printReport()
         Frame tempFrame = new Frame(getName());
         PrintJob printerJob = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getPrintJob(tempFrame, "Liesltext", null);
         Graphics g = printerJob.getGraphics();
                    //I wrote the method below for calculations
         printBasics(g);
         g.dispose();
         printerJob.end();
    }This alone wont print it you have to do all the calculations in the printBasics method. And as I said I wrote this from scratch and all I did was research first the tutorial and the white papers

  • How to convert a HTML files into a text file using Java

    Hi guys...!
    I was wondering if there is a way to convert a HTML file into a text file using java programing language. Likewise I would also like to know if there is a way to convert any type of file (excel, power point, and word) into text using java.
    By the way, I really appreciated the help that you guys gave me on my previous topic on how to extract tests from a pdf file.
    Thank you....

    HTML files are already text files. What do you mean you want to convert them?
    I think if you search the web, you can find things for converting those MS Office files to text (or extracting text from them, as I assume you mean).
