Tomcat 4.1.18 & j2sdk1.4.1_01  using servlets

I'm new to writing WEB applications and SERVLETS.
How do I invoke a servlet from HTML. I'm not sure of the
content of the action field. I have a class file that successfully
compiled from the execution of javac.
     <DIV CLASS=C01 STYLE="left:300;top:251;width:121;height:28;"><FORM>
          <INPUT TYPE=submit CLASS=C01 VALUE="LogIn" OnClick="
          this.form.action='//http//localhost:8080/EchoForm';
          this.form.method='post';
          if(!(IE && MAC && V4 && !V5)) this.form.encoding='text/plain'";
     </FORM></DIV>
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Ken Martin

Servlets run serverside in a container called servlet runner. you need setup your serlvets in such serlvet runner to be able to use them. then you cann call them like any other web ressource.

  • Changing from jdk 1.3 to j2sdk1.4.1_01

    Hi!
    I have a problem with the use of java 1.4.1_01 on Windows XP.
    When i installed jdk 1.3, i set the PATH-variable in the autoexec.bat file in the following way:
    PATH = C:\jdk1.3\bin
    Everything was OK, all the jdk-tools (compiler, interpreter etc) could get used from any folder.
    Then i installed j2sdk1.4.1_01 without uninstalling jdk 1.3.
    In order to use the new version, i changed the PATH-setting:
    PATH = C:\j2sdk1.4.1_01\bin
    Then i wrote an application with JCreator LE and had no problems to compile and run it with by JCreator.
    Now i created a batch-file to start my application, but when i open it to run my application, i get an error that the file to run cannot be found.
    When i tried to start "javac" from MSDOS, i got the error that "javac" cannot be found (although "java" is found, but not usable to run the application; starnge, isnt it?)
    Why can i run applications with JCreator? Does it use an isolatede setting of PATH?
    How can i set the path, so that i can run my java - applications from any place from MSDOS (in order to create batch-files to start them)??
    Pleas help me.

  • Cache file(pdf) in user's browser using Servlet -Cookie, or Session

    How can I save a file (pdf) in the cache of a browser (IE 6) in a user's computer? I am using Servlet and Tomcat 4.1.24. PDF file is sitting in server (remote computer) under a URL space.
    The idea is to NOT to download the pdf file on user's computer (from the remote server) if the user has a cached copy of the pdf file and pdf file in the server is the same as the pdf file in the browser. If cached pdf is different from pdf in browser, or, if the user does not have that pdf file in cache, then download pdf file from the server.
    Can I come up with a way to use Cookie class? Cookie class does not have an API which will let me save a file in it. I could have saved the pdf file in the Cookie with 999999999 setMaxAge. Is storing that pdf file in session the only choice? I do not see session serving my purpose - session should not be valid for a longgg duration e.g. week or month.
    Also, how would I create a file whne I am given a URL to that file.
    URL fileInServer = new URL("http://www.myDomain.com/myWebApp/PDF/my.pdf);
    URLConnection conn = fileInServer.openConnection();
    Does getContent() help and what are the steps after that?
    Any help with the source code will be appreciated.

    I am NOT creating this PDF file on the fly. This pdf file is sitting in the server (remote machine) under URL e.g. http://10.10.10.xxx:8081/myApp/PDF/my.pdf
    I need to check if this pdf file is in the cache in user's computer (differnt machine than the server) and if the cached pdf is the same as the pdf in the server. If that file is not in the cache, or if they are not the same, then, I need to save the pdf file from the server into user's browser cache.
    I am writing all that code in Servlet. I can save the file in session. I do NOT know how else can I cache the file, other than saving it in session. I can not think of any setHeader() which will let me save a file in user's browser cache. Headers like If-Modified-Since are of no help, as it does not let me compare file in browser cache with the file in server.
    Also, how would I create a file, given a URL to that file.
    URL fileInServer = new URL("http://www.myDomain.com/myWebApp/PDF/my.pdf");
    URLConnection conn = fileInServer.openConnection();
    Do I use getContent()? What are the steps after that?

    Are you sure your servlet class itself can run without problem? Try debug in the these steps:
    1. Change your servlet to simply output some HTML text, so you can be sure tomcat can get to your servlet. If this is OK, it means the servlet itself has problem, probably the EJB stuff.
    2. Make sure the EJB container is running.
    3. Make your servlet a standalone client (not a servlet) and see if it can run. Pay attention to how you do JNDI lookup of the EJB.

  • Opening an excel file on server side using servlets

    hi, am having a small problem for launching an excel file. Standalone,
    i use
    Desktop.getDesktop().open( new File("C:/test.xls") );
    and it works fine but when using servlets via tomcat, it does not launch. Any idea?
    actually am using ajax to allow a user to remotely launch an excel
    file (the excel file contains a macro which will generate and save a
    chart as image) on the server.

    Do you realize that this will only open that Excel file at the Server machine, not at the Client machine? If you're testing (read: acting as Client) at the same machine as where the Server runs, then you will see the result of Desktop#open(). But if you're testing at a different machine (read: as in the real world) than where the Server runs, then you won't see the result of Desktop#open(), because this is executed at the Server machine itself, not at the Client machine.

  • Could not connect to database using servlet

    Hi,
    i'm using oracle 8.1.5.0.0, tomcat 3.2.1, jdk1.2.2 to build an intranet application. I downloaded the classes12.zip and nls_charset12.zip from the oracle web site and install in the oracle\ora81\jdbc\lib directory.
    when i tried to run the samples code provided by oracle, the program can run properly. but when i tried to run it in my own program using servlet, i got an error as follow:
    java.sql.SQLException IoException:The Network Adapter could not establish a connection.
    i have gone through the codes but could not found any errors that I made and now i'm run out of ideas on the error i get.
    could someone please help me with this problem?
    thank you.
    regards,
    Josephine

    No, the web server requires no configuration. You do need to make sure that the classes12.zip file is in the Tomcat classpath - I believe the Tomcat startup script pulls in all the files in $TOMCAT_HOME/lib, so put the zip file there. I assume you had to change your hostname in the connection URL - what are the connection parameters you used in the Oracle samples? Were these samples Servlets, or command-line programs? Usually when you get the "Network Adapted could not establish a connection" error from the JDBC thin driver, it means that your hostname or port number or SID are wrong,or the database is not up.

  • Using Servlet for non HTTP purpose

    Hi,
    I have a requirement where I require tomcat to serve a non http request. Is there a way?

    The HTTP protocol begins with a line like:
    GET /some/thing HTTP/1.0
    Tomcat uses the "/some/thing" to find out to which servlet to give the request.
    If your protocol doesn't have that line, Tomcat is going to have a hard time knowing what to do with the request.
    You could write a thread that opens a ServerSocket, accepts incoming requests, and hands them off to a servlet-like system (perhaps even subclasses of Servlet). You could even run that thread within Tomcat. If you want/can restrict yourself to Tomcat, you may even be able to use parts of Tomcat's internals (the Service/Connector/Engine infrastructure or whatnot.) Whether this is a good approach depends on all kinds of details.

  • Can I use servlet as my welcome file

    How can I use servlet as my welcome file? I know how to use jsp or html pages as my welcome file but that doesn't work for servlets. I modified my web.xml for making jsps and html as my welcome pages but that <welcome-file-list> tag is not working for servlets.

    This was a bug that occured in older Tomcat programs, not sure if it still occurs or not.
    Basically, when this happens, you have to have a physical file with the welcome file name. So you would have to create a file named index.do in each of your directories you wanted the welcome to work for. The index.do wouldn't have to actually do anything. It just had to exist. Then when the URL was used to create content, the servlet would be called to create that content.

  • Getting absolute path of a file in a webapp without using servlet/JSP

    Hi all,
    I need a small clarification. Is it possible to reterive the absolute path of a file present in a tomcat web application without using Servlet/JSP. • URGENT.........File Upload using Servlets and jsp

    I am a new servlet programmer.......
    iam using tomcat server......
    can any one pls help in writing code for file upload using servlets and jsp without using multipart class or any other class like that....
    Please URGENT..

    Slow down! "Urgent" is from your perspective alone. I, myself, am not troubled or worried in the least.
    hi ugniss
    thanks for ur reply....sorry i was not
    y i was not asked not to use multipart class or any
    other class like that...is there any other
    possibility to do file uploading from jsp to
    servlet...
    Just as an aside, a JSP is a Servlet. But even if I move beyond that, the question does not make sense. If you want a "JSP to upload to a Servlet", then simply do so in memory. You are still (likely) within the same scope of a given request. However, if instead you are referring to a JSP that is displayed on a browser, then really you are talking about HTML, which is what the browser will receive. And since you are now talking about a browser, your only real, viable option is a multi-part file upload. So, it is either server or it is browser. And either way, the question leads to very established options, as outlined above.
    the main concept is.. in the browser the user selects
    a particular file and clicks the button upload..after
    clicking upload the jsp should sent the file to the
    servlet in streams...there the servlet gets in and
    saves in a server location........this is wat i hav
    to do...
    Okay. So, after reading my previous (redundant) paragraph, we have arrived at the crux of the issue. You have a JSP that will be output as HTML to a client (browser) which you want to upload content to your server (handled by a Servlet). So, you are now stuck again with multi-part. The requirement to not use multi-part is non-sensical. You can overcome it, say, if you write your own applet or standalone Swing client. However, if your users are invoking this functionality from a browser, you are limited by the options that W3C has provided you. Use multi-part.
    is there aby possibilty to do this.....can any one
    pls help....Take the advice to download and review Jakarta Commons FileUpload. Inform your management that their requirement makes no technical sense. Research on your own. There are dozens of examples (and tutorials) on file upload using multi-part. Embrace it. Live it. Love it.

  • Open Jasper Report in new page using servlet

    Guys,
    Looks very simple but i am having problem making this process work. I am using 11.1.1.4
    This is my use case:
    - From a employee page, user clicks on a menu item to open report for current employee. I need to pass appropriate report parameters to servlet and open report into new page.
    I can successfully call servlet using commandmenuitem and set request parameters and call servlet from backing bean.... but that doesn't open report in a new page.... any way i can do this?
    Another option i tried was that using gomenuitem and setting target=blank but in that case i need to pass the parameter using servlet url which i like to avoid.(in case i need to pass many parameters in future) (also values will be set on page so i need to generate url when then click the menuitem...... so there are some hoops and loops i need to go through) I don't know a way to pass the request parameter using backing bean to servlet... i don't think it is possible.
    Those are the two approaches i tried.
    If you have any better approach...I would appreciate if you can let me know. (i have searched on internet for two days now.... for the solution)
