Tomcat Help?!

When trying to load my web page (a jsp) with my newly set up tomcat web server (which seems to be working fine with the default tomcat stuff) I get the following error:
org.apache.jasper.JasperException: This absolute uri (http://java.sun.com/jstl/core) cannot be resolved in either web.xml or the jar files deployed with this application
Anyone have any idea why this would be happening, all I'm trying to do is this:
<%@taglib prefix="c" uri="http://java.sun.com/jstl/core" %>

Ok so I did that and put the standard.jar in my WEB-INF/lib folder. Still get the
org.apache.jasper.JasperException: This absolute uri (http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core) cannot be resolved in either web.xml or the jar files deployed with this application
Error
Any ideas on what I need to do?

  • NetBeans with Tomcat Help - Server returned HTTP response code: 503

    Hi all, I wasn't sure where to post this.. but anyhow, my problem is as follows:
    Earlier in the day, I was able to successfully deploy my application to the Tomcat server by simply running the application from NetBeans. A couple of hours away from my computer and I returned to find this error when I ran my application:
    In-place deployment at C:\xxx
    Server returned HTTP response code: 503 for URL: http://localhost:8081/manager/deploy?config=file:/C:/xxx
    C:\xxx\nbproject\build-impl.xml:634: Deployment error:
    The module has not been deployed.
    See the server log for details.
    BUILD FAILED (total time: 36 seconds)
    Any ideas on how to solve this? I've tried reinstalling NetBeans, Tomcat, reconfiguring NetBeans but to no avail. I should also mention that I am able to successfully deploy the application sometimes when I select a different server to deploy to. >_<
    Gurus out there, please help..

    Solved my own solution.. It had to do with one of my Hibernate named queries. =x Found that out when I switched to SUN Application Server for awhile. ^_^

    I have developed reports that run other reports in 9i and10g. I would have a "main" report that I would call from Forms (or HTMLDB). This "main" report would run multiple other reports. I used the report built-in procedure SRW.RUN_REPORT("report=report2.rdf parameter=XX") in the After Parameter Form trigger of the main report to call the other reports.

  • XP JSP TOMCAT HELP!!!

    Im having problems getting tomcat to work in IE6 in Windows XP. Following the set of instructions i have, i successfully managed to configure tamcat 3.2.3 in windows 2K and IE5.5, but now i have put XP on, i cant get it to work using the same proceedure. In 2K, when i typed http://localhost i got a tomcat page some up. in XP i just get a blank page saying "Directory Listing for:/ Tomcat Web Server v3.2.3". when ive tried out a few of the examples, i cant get them to work properly either. Is there something i should have done differently for XP/IE6 ??
    Any help greatly appreciated. thanks

    Type in http://localhost:8080/
    Tomcat also caches webpages in the work folder. Delete this folder and restart tomcat.
    Also make sure that web.xml points to the right files.
    In IE, go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Click Settings and make sure that the 'Every visit to page' radio button is checked.

  • Apache + 2 Tomcats session replication problem.

    Greetings everyone.
    Before stating the problem, let me explain how my environment is set.
    I have two machines. One (PC1) running Apache (HTTP server 2.0.58)
    and one instance of Tomcat (5.0.28) and another machine (PC2) with
    another instance of Tomcat(5.0.28).
    The Apache server
    It is configured to handle static content, to redirect dynamic content to a
    Tomcat instance through AJP 1.3 connector.
    This process is done through the mod_jk and the workers.properties
    The workers.properties file is configured to have sticky_session = True
    so it assigns a SESSION_ID to the same Tomcat it was first assigned.
    The workers.properties file is configured to have
    sticky_session_force = True so if the Tomcat the SESSION_ID was
    assigned is not available, the server answers with a 500 error.
    The Tomcat servers
    Both have only the AJP 1.3 connector enabled
    Both have the Cluster tag from the server.xml file uncommented
    and the useDirtyFlag flag set to false, for not to allow SESSION
    replication between Tomcats.
    The workers.properties file
    workers.apache_log=C:/Apache2/logs
    workers.tomcat_home=C:/Tomcat5
    workers.java_home=C:/j2sdk1.4.2_13

    #worker.tel2.redirect=tel1
    worker.tel2.disabled=False
    THE PROBLEM
    I open a browser in the jk-status page to see how the Tomcat instances are
    working, and both are working fine: Stat -> OK, now as the
    loadbalancing factor is 1 on both Tomcats, an even alternating session
    distribution is set.
    While this browser is open to keep an eye on the status, I open a new
    browser (B1)to connect to my Web Application, Apache answers
    correctly and gives me a SESSION_ID for Tomcat instance 1 [both
    instances are OK], if I make a simple refresh, my SESSION_ID is still the
    same so I'm assigned to Tomcat instance 1 but this time I get an
    ERROR 503 - Service unavailable but looking at the status of the
    Tomcat instances both instances are still OK, no-one is down. And it
    stays throwing this error for as many refreshes i do.
    Now, I open a new browser (B2)and do the same process as before,
    as expected, Apache now gives me a SESSION_ID for Tomcat instance 2,
    repeating the same refreshing process, the error is thrown again, but still at
    the jk-status page, both instances are fine.
    Without closing these windows, I make a new refresh try on B1 and
    even though the jk-status says both Tomcat instances are OK, the error
    is still thrown. I open a third one (B3), and Apache again, correctly
    gives me a new SESSION_ID for Tomcat instance 1 and answers
    correctly on the first call. But once again if i repeat the refreshing process, the
    error is thrown again.
    Note: Using a different resolution to always keep and eye on the
    instances status and using a refresh rate of 1 second for status, both
    servers always were OK.
    So the main problem is that somehow when the session is replicated
    to the same tomcat, Apache confuses and thinks it is not available, when
    asking it through the jk-status it tells it is OK
    I've been trying different configurations with both Apache and Tomcat,
    but there must be something missing since I don't get it to work correctly
    Thanks in advance for all your helping comments.

    Whew... that was quite an answer... definitely is going to help him a lot. Yeah any n00b by now should know how to use google, but that's not the point in this forums, here we are to help each other. and wether you like it or not many of us deploy applications to tomcat and stumble on this. So dont try to be cool posting this kind of answers like google this or google that if you dont have an answer please dont comment you will appear to be more noobish than you aparently are.
    Well enough talking.
    I found the following useful: (it comes in the server.xml of the tomcat configuration)
    <!-- You should set jvmRoute to support load-balancing via JK/JK2 ie :
    <Engine name="Standalone" defaultHost="localhost" debug="0" jvmRoute="jvm1">
    -->
    Enabling that entry on both machines should be enough.
    Aparently the problem is not with apache. is with tomcat since it can't retain the session apache gives.
    more information in the Tomcat help at:

  • Tomcat and JavaMail Sessions problem

    I'm using Tomcat (with struts). I've configured my web application in server.xml to manage JavaMail Sessions:
              <Resource name="mail/Session" auth="Container" type="javax.mail.Session"/>

    javax.mail.Session mailSesion = (javax.mail.Session) envContext.lookup("mail/Session"); <--- this throws an exception
    I'm doing all like is explained in Tomcat help web page 'JNDI Resources HOW-TO' but it doesn' work for me.

  • Full GC loops - JDK1.4.1

    Hi,
    we are using JDK1.4.1_01 with Tomcat 4.1.18 for a banking application with 20.000 hits per day and 2000 users (Win 2000, 4 GB, 2 2000 MHZ CPU).
    After 8 hours runtime and only some full gcs occuring (and a lot more minor gcs) Tomcat dies with OutOfMemory exceptions.
    In the verbose:gc output you can see that the vm hangs in a full gc loop without reducing the heap and although there is only 100M of 1500M heap used.
    The systems can't respond due to the fact one full gc is starting after the one that has just finished.
    At this stage we have no idea why. Only restarting Tomcat helps and ensures us another 8 hours online time.
    The vm parameters are the following:
    -XX:+PrintHeapAtGC -XX:+PrintGCDetails -XX:+PrintGCTimeStamps -XX:NewRatio=3 -Xms1536M -Xmx1536M -XX:-DisableExplicitGC -Xloggc:logs\tomcat-gc-collections.txt -Dcatalina.base="d:\apps\tomcat" -Dcatalina.home="d:\apps\tomcat" -Djava.io.tmpdir=d:\apps\tmp -Dhostmode=avus -Dlog4j.configuration=log4J.properties -Djava.naming.factory.initial=com.inprise.j2ee.jndi.CtxFactory -Djava.naming.factory.url.pkgs=com.inprise.j2ee.jndi -Dvbroker.agent.port=14449
    The catalina.log states the following:
    003-06-23 16:31:49 HttpProcessor[80][36] process.invoke
    java.lang.OutOfMemoryError
    2003-06-23 16:31:49 HttpProcessor[80][25] process.invoke
    java.lang.OutOfMemoryError
    Thanks for any help
    Oliver

    is it just me or did you disable explicit garbage collection meaning that calls to System.gc() are ignored ...
    personally I think it is probably better to force calls when they are needed (i.e. when you're placing a lot of young objects into the heap)
    However as to why full gc isn't reducing the free memory - sound buggy to me.

  • Help: Connecting Tomcat to CA-IDMS Using JDBC Type 4 Drivers (JNDI)

    Hi there,
    I have a rather interesting / complex problem......creating a connection to CA-IDMS from Tomcat using JDBC type 4 drivers (CA provide the type 4 driver).
    We have a zSeries 9 IBM mainframe running CA-IDMS r16.1, and I need to connect to the IDMS from Tomcat (running on Linux) using the JDBC Type 4 drivers provided by CA.
    At this stage I am struggling with the actual setup and configuration of Tomcat’s server.xml and web.xml files. These are the files where the JDBC configuration is set (I think). I have to setup the CA-IDMS part of the configuration, but that is a different problem. Basically there is a TCP/IP listener on the IDMS, waiting for incoming connections from the JDBC type 4 driver.
    I set up a Tomcat to MySQL connection using MySQL Connector / J, which is a similar kind of process to what I am trying to achieve with IDMS. MySQL connector / J came with a jar file which is placed in Tomcat’s lib folder, and then the JDBC setup for the web application is created in Tomcat's server.xml and web.xml files. You can then connect to the MySQL database using JSP and the configured JDBC driver / connection. The CA-IDMS Server comes with an idmsjdbc.jar file, which I think is the JDBC typr 4 driver. I think it needs to be placed in the Tomcat /lib folder, but I don’t know how to set up the configuration.
    There is a JDBC DriverManager which allows JDBC drivers to connect to CA-IDMS. The DriverManager recognises the following syntax:
    jdbc:idms://hostname:port/database
    This allows the JDBC driver running within Tomcat to connect to the IDMS which is running on the IDM mainframe. CA IDMS r16 supports direct connections from the Type 4 JDBC driver to the Central Version on IDMS. "hostname" is the DNS name or IP address of the machine where the CV is running, and "port" is the IP port that was specified for the listener PTERM (setup on the IDMS side).
    There is a caidms.properties file for the JDBC driver, which is used to specify user ID, password, and optional accounting information. It can also be used to specify physical connection information, allowing an application to connect to a CA-IDMS database without requiring the definition of an ODBC style data source. However, I don’t know where to place this file within the Tomcat setup.
    There is also an IdmsDataSource class. I don’t know where to configure this or how to set it up; the CA-IDMS Server manual states the following:
    This class implements the JDBC DataSource interface. It is used with an application server (Tomcat) providing Java Naming and Directory Interface (JNDI) naming service to establish a connection to a CA IDMS database. IdmsDataSource properties conform to the Java Beans naming conventions and are implicitly defined by public “setter” and “getter” methods. For example, the “description” property, which is required for all DataSource implementations, is set using the setDescription(String) method. The application server may use the java.lang.reflection methods to discover DataSource properties and provide an interface to set them, or may simply require that they are defined in some configuration file. IdmsDataSource properties are used to specify the connection parameters. These properties are the equivalent of the DriverPropertyInfo attributes described in the previous section and can be used to completely define the parameters needed to connect to a database. Like a URL, an IdmsDataSource object can also reference an “ODBC” style data source name, where the connection parameters are defined in the configuration file on Linux.
    Is there anyone that can try to point me in the right direction to setting up the JDBC connection? I am totally new to Java and so the instructions are not making much sense at the moment. Any help, hints, tips…..anything will be greatly appreciated as I have just hit a brick wall here. I can't find much to do with setting up the CA-IDMS Server JDBC type 4 driver online either....if anyone can point me to some resources that would also be extremely useful.
    Kind regards
    Jp

    You say you've managed to get the JDBC driver working
    in an application but not in a JSP. You also say that
    the error you get is
    "com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver".
    I'd be willing to bet that the exception that you have
    got is a ClassNotFoundException. I.E. your application
    server hasn't found the JDBC driver classes. The
    application server probably doesn't use your current
    CLASSPATH to look for classes. It will be setup within
    the application server in some way and you'll need to
    check your app server documentation to see how it is
    done.
    Try replacing
    e.printStackTrace();with
    e.printStackTrace(out);to get a full stack trace of your error.
    ColTried it. Got this error when I tried to run the JSP.
    Incompatible type for method. Can't convert javax.servlet.jsp.JspWriter to java.io.PrintWriter.
              e.printStackTrace(out);
    I'm currently using Apache Tomcat 4.0.3 as my JSP/Servlet Container.
    I'm also using Type 4 MS SQL Server 2000 JDBC driver version 2.0 on my NT4.0 Server.
    Do I need to set my JDBC driver in my container? if so, how do I do that?

  • URGENT HELP NEEDED ... Tomcat Realm and JRE1.4 plug-in problem

    I have tried the Security Realm of Tomcat. Since I do not have
    an LDAP server, I decided to use the Tomcat-users.xml file in
    Tomcat\conf directory.
    I added the following lines of code in the web.xml file.
    <security-constraint>
    <web-resource-collection>
    <web-resource-name>Entire Application</web-resource-name>
    <url-pattern>/*</url-pattern>
    </web-resource-collection>
    <auth-constraint>
    <!-- NOTE: This role is not present in the default users file -->
    <role-name>webviewer</role-name>
    </auth-constraint>
    </security-constraint>
    <login-config>
    <auth-method>BASIC</auth-method>
    <realm-name>Tomcat Manager Application</realm-name>
    </login-config>
    The <role-name> "webviewer" is added into "Tomcat-Users.xml" as the following:
    <tomcat-users>
    <user name="test" password="password" roles="webviewer" />
    </tomcat-users>
    So, now when we type the url: http://localhost:8080/adbpdbre/default.htm, TOMCAT shows a dialog box asking for UserName: and Password:Now, only when we give the username and password, it shows the page. This is exactly what we want.
    But the problem now is, this default.htm page, has 5 links to 5 applets. The first time that I click on one of these links, the JRE plug of 1.4 shows a dialog again asking for the username and password. Till I dont provide the username and password the system doesnt go ahead and applet doesnt load. I do not want the JRE to ask me for the username/passwords again..How to avoid this ?
    Can you give me some more information on this. Ultimately in the production usage, we will be using LDAP and not Tomcat's memory realm.
    URGENT HELP NEEDED ... I need to get back to my client on this.
    Help would be v. much appreciated.

    In the config file, you 're essentially saying that you want Tomcat to prompt for usr/passw on every request (url-pattern = /*) made by a 'webviewer', and that's exactly what Tomcat is doing.
    Consider using specific url-patterns & roles for resources to be protected. If for now, all you need is to protect the first page, use a more specific url-pattern.
    Just an advice : if you'll be using LDAP in production, do not waste time with Tomcat's Security Realm and the BASIC authentication type, since the two have not much in common. Start reading doc on LDAP, and code a prototype, or even better, a vertical slice of the app (i.e a proof of concept).

    <%@ taglib prefix="c" uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core" %>
    I have placed the jstl.jar and standard.jarof the jakarta-taglibs-standard-1.1.2.zip under E:\Deepa\workspace\DBTest\WebContent\WEB-INF\lib directory also placedcontext.xml file under E:\Deepa\workspace\DBTest\WebContent\META-INF and the content of context.xml is as below
    <Context path="/DBTest" docBase="DBTest"
    debug="5" reloadable="true" crossContext="true">
    <Resource name="jdbc/TestDB" auth="Container" type="javax.sql.DataSource"
    maxActive="100" maxIdle="30" maxWait="10000"
    username="deepa" password="mysql" driverClassName="com.mysql.jdbc.Driver"
    url="jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/javatest?autoReconnect=true"/>
    </Context>
    Now while running the example, Eclipse creates one DBTest.xml file under C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Tomcat 6.0\conf\Catalina\localhost
    which has the following line:
    <Context path="/DBTest" reloadable="true" docBase="E:\Deepa\workspace\DBTest" workDir="E:\Deepa\workspace\DBTest\work" />
    I am getting the following error when running http://localhost/DBTest/WebContent/test.jsp

    what is the problem with my code?
    When running the same example, by creating a local server in Eclipse(creating new Server connection pointing to same Tomcat 6.0 installation) it runs fine without any error.

    Hi evnafets,
    Wow, very helpful information, great insight into working of Eclipse. Thanks a lot.
    I have one more question. I have a context.xml file under {color:#0000ff}E:\Deepa\workspace\DBTest\WebContent\META-INF{color} folder and that has the Resource element to connect to MySQL database:
    {code{color:#000000}}{color}<Context path="/DBTest" docBase="DBTest" debug="5" reloadable="true" crossContext="true">
    <Resource name="jdbc/TestDB" auth="Container" type="javax.sql.DataSource" maxActive="100" maxIdle="30" maxWait="10000" username="deepa" password="mysql" driverClassName="com.mysql.jdbc.Driver"
    {color:#0000ff}url="jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/javatest?autoReconnect=true"/>{color}
    {color:#0000ff}</Context>{color}As usual when running application in local Tomcat server of Eclipse, this data source works fine. But when I run the application on Tomcat, by starting Sysdeo plugin from Eclipse, the DBTest.xml file created in C:\Tomcat 6.0\conf\Catalina\localhost has the context entry as<Context path="/DBTest" reloadable="true" docBase="E:\Deepa\workspace\DBTest\WebContent" workDir="E:\Deepa\workspace\DBTest\work">
    </Context>The<Resource> element I have specified in the context.xml of \WebContent\META-INF folder is not taken into account by Tomcat and it gives the following error:May 21, 2009 5:20:04 AM org.apache.catalina.core.StandardWrapperValve invoke
    SEVERE: Servlet.service() for servlet jsp threw exception

    {code}
    So to overcome this error I had to place the <Resource> element in DBTest.xml under C:\Tomcat 6.0\conf\Catalina\localhost {color:#000000}and then it works fine. {color}{color:#ff0000}*Why is the context.xml file in META-INF not considered by Tomcat server using Sysdeo Plugin?*
    *Thanks,*

  • Need help getting Tomcat 5.0.28 to start (and stop, eventually)

    Hi!
    I am such a newbie to the Terminal and writing scripts, so please forgive my naiveté. I have successfully installed Tomcat in my /usr/local directory, but I am having trouble creating files to start and stop Tomcat, per the instructions on the following page:
    http://developer.apple.com/internet/java/tomcat1.html
    I've followed the directions but continue to get the following error after I execute ~/bin/start_tomcat.
    -bash: start_tomcat: command not found
    My file contains the following code:
    #!/bin/sh /n
    export CATALINA_HOME=/usr/local/jakarta-tomcat-5.0.28 /n
    export JAVA_HOME=/usr /n
    $CATALINA_HOME/bin/startup.sh /n
    If anyone can help me, I would really, really, really appreciate it!
    Thanks!
    PowerBook G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Why are there all those "/n" there? Either you or the place you copied from has the wrong slash. But still, it's wronger than that to have them at all: "\n" means a newline (i.e., press "return") not the actual "backslash en" characters. Sometimes people post code with those \n visible: by making it explicit where a line-break should be, one doesn't have as much trouble when a web browser reformats the text and puts line breaks where they don't belong.
