Tons of Cannot Find SQL Server errors in ULS log

Background: I inherited the maintenance of this farm. The previous consultant migrated the client from WSS 3.0 to 2013 by way of 2007 MOSS and 2010 (unsure of version). I do not know if there was a "temporary" SQL server used during this process
that no longer exists. It seems likely given all of the errors regarding a missing SQL server.
The current 2013 Enterprise farm contains 1 WFE and 3 App servers, 2 of which comprise the search topology. There is one SQL server, not aliased. All machines are VMs. One of the search servers (App) is on a different ESXi host. The timer job that is creating
all of the ULS errors is running on the WFE. Beyond that, the farm has these symptoms:
It "works" albeit very slowly. Crawl rate of 2-7 dps for both external file shares and the SP content (both with and without Task Offloading / Chimney Offloading enabled). It seems to frequently recycle or take an otherwise long time to render
in the browser (any page). Finally, it  spews tens of thousands of errors 24x7 on the WFE saying a SQL server (unnamed) cannot be contacted via Named Pipes.
Specifically: "Unknown SQL Exception 53 occurred. Additional error information from SQL Server is included below.  A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or
was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)".
The next error in the sequence is: "An internal error occurred while running a timer job: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that
the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) at System.Data.ProviderBase.DbConnectionPool.TryGetConnection(DbConnection owningObject,
UInt32 waitForMultipleObjectsTimeout, Boolean allowCreate, Boolean onlyOneCheckConnection, DbConnectionOptions userOptions, DbConnectionInternal& connection)..."
This is followed by an error such as this: "There was an internal error invoking the timer job '{E4DDC92E-0056-4E7E-BD3F-1CF5670ACB7D}' for service '{6105D588-FB34-4F1C-82F6-479D7FE146EA}'."
Of course, each time the timer job mentioned is different.
One more error appears consistently with these although not as frequently: "The Execute method of job definition Microsoft.SharePoint.Diagnostics.SPDiagnosticsMetricsProvider (ID 36e6942a-9a80-440f-94a4-e4a606362734) threw an exception. More information
is included below.  Connection Timeout Expired.  The timeout period elapsed while attempting to consume the pre-login handshake acknowledgement.  This could be because the pre-login handshake failed or the server was unable to respond back in
time.  The duration spent while attempting to connect to this server was - [Pre-Login] initialization=21276; handshake=0;"
I have been troubleshooting this for days but am not making much progress. How can I determine just what SQL server it says it cannot find and where that server name is stored? It seems like it has to be part of the Timer job configuration since the two
things are related.

Hi,
Thanks for your sharing and have a good day.

  • Cannot open SQL Server error on 64 bit Windows 7

I have a client running a Crystal 8.5 report that includes an embedded subreport.  The subreport based on a second database is not updating and sometimes the report reports an error "Cannot open SQL Server".
The database is open and available, and the report works on a 32-bit XP machine on the same database with the exact same report on the same network.
The report works on my development machine with the clients database and the exact same report (my system is Windows 7 32-bit) - different office setup.
Because the report only has problems on the 64-bit, I am wondering if there is a pathing problem from the Program files (x86) or some such issue.
I have copied the files in the c:\Windows\Crystal directory to the c:\Windows\system32 directory.  I've come across issues with Terminal Services that required this in the past.
If it matters, the main report is based on the MS Text Driver running off csv files and the subreport is based on a MySQL database using the 3.51 ODBC driver.
Does anyone know any issues and/or solutions related to running Crystal/32 bit programs on a 64 bit system?
    TIA, rasinc.

CR 8.5 is not supported on 64 bit OS's or ANY Terminal Servers.
The location for 32 bit applications on a 64 bit OS is \windows\syswow64.
    Good luck

  • Cannot find SQL Server 2008 instance

I have installed SQL server 2008 Developer edition on my laptop. When I open SSMS I cannot find the installed instance under the Server Name group and When I choose the Browse More option and go to Database engine, the instance name does not show up. Will
    appreciate any suggestions.
    Thanks

    >>I see two instances of SQL Server 2008 when i issue the commands you suggested to me
I don't why you have two instances, may be you installed two different instances.
I think local servers list is obtained by reading the registry key
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server \Instance Names\SQL
Sometimes (don't know why may it is SQL browser service or something else messed up) you don't see a locally installed instance on the drop down list. Just
type in the instance name manually inside the textbox for server name and you should be able to connect

  • Cannot Install Sql Server 2008, Gives The Error "Database Engine Services Failed"

I cannot install Sql Server 2008 R2 on Windows 8. Tried many times but failed because it gives the error "Database
Engine Services Failed". Sql files cannot be corrupted because i can install the same setup on Windows 7 and i can connect to databases.
    I tried all the things below;
    * I'm uninstalling everything related with Sql Server from Control Panel/Programs And Features.
    * I'm deleting all the keys related with Sql Server from Regedit.
    * Later i'm restarting windows, and trying to install again. But during the install it gives the error "Database
Engine Services Failed", install is finishing but when i opened the Management Studio i cannot connect to Database Engine with Sa naturally.
    * My firewall is already closed. And i have not any antivirus software.
    * I gave the permission for port 1433 on firewall.
Please help me. Why i always take "Database Engine Services Failed" error? I will get crazy cause of that for many days.

Do not delete the old account yet. sign up for an iCloud account if you haven't.
I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
              •          Server name: imap.mail.me.com
              •          SSL Required: Yes
              •          Port: 993
              •          Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
              •          Password: Your iCloud password
    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
              •          Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
              •          SSL Required: Yes
              •          Port: 587
              •          SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
              •          Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
              •          Password: Your iCloud password
Also, you must upgrade your password to meet the new criteria:  8 characters, including upper and lower case and numbers.  If you have an older password that does not meet these criteria, when you try to setup mail on your mac, using all of the IMAP criteria listed above, it will still give a server error message.  Go to   http://appleid.apple.com         then follow directions to change your password, then go back to setting up your mail using the IMAP instructions above.
    Thanks to dpepper...

    Help,
setup a new sql server 2012 on a windows 2012r2 server to replace old sql server 2005 on an old windows server 2003 machine.  When i test the ODBC connection locally on the server it works fine, however when i try to connect via windows 7 client machine
    i get the following error:
    Connection failed:
    SQLState:'01000'
    SQL Server Error:67
    [Microsoft]ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]ConnectionOpen
    (Connect()).
    Connection failed:
    SQLState:'08001'
    SQL Server Error:17
[Microsoft]ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]SQL Server does not exist or access denied
I think it must be a permissions thing, I've turned off the firewall for now and still no difference, 've also made sure remote connection is enabled.  I can connect to the other sql server in studio manager on the new machine however, i can't go do
the same in the old server, says:
    cannot connect to hbfsqlpro1\hbfsqlpro1
Additonal information a network related or instance specifc error occured while establising a connection to SQL server.  The server was not found or was not accessible.  Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL server is configured to
allow remote connections. (provider:SQL Network Interfaces, error 26 - error locationg server/instance specified) (Microsoft SQL server)
the instance is def correct, as that is what i use to connect locally on the new machine and what it comes up on the studio manager on the new machine.  STarting to pull my hair out somewhat, i'm sure it's something really simple!

    Hello,
You are trying to connect to a named instance. Make sure the SQL Server Browser service is started on the SQL Server computer.
    Make sure TCP/IP is enabled.
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms191294(v=sql.110).aspx
Try to disable Windows Firewall or security software on both, SQL Server instance and client computer.
Test basic connectivity too. Try to ping from the client computer to the SQL Server computer.
    Hope this helps.

Since there are so many possibilities for what might be wrong.  Here's another possibility to look at.  I ran into something where I had set up my own roles on a database.  (For instance, "Administrator", "Manager", "DataEntry", "Customer",
each with their own kinds of limitations)  The only ones who could use it were "Manager" role or above--because they were also set up as sysadmin because they were adding users to the database (and they were highly trusted).  Also, the users that
were being added were Windows Domain users--using their domain credentials.  (Everyone with access to the database had to be on our domain, but not everyone on the domain had access to the database--and only a few of them had access to change it.)
Anyway, this working system suddenly stopped working and I was getting error messages similar to the above.  What I ended up doing that solved it was to go through all the permissions for the "public" role in that database and add those permissions to
all of the roles that I had created.  I know that everyone is supposed to be in the "public" role even though you can't add them (or rather, you can "add" them, but they won't "stay added").
So, in "SQL Server Management Studio", I went into my application's database, in other words (my localized names are obscured within <> brackets): "<Computername> (SQL Server <version> - sa)"\Databases\<MyAppDB>\Security\Roles\Database
Roles\public".  Right-click on "public" and select "Properties".  In the "Database Role Properties - public" dialog, select the "Securables" page.  Go through the list and for each element in the list, come up with an SQL "Grant" statement to
grant exactly that permission to another role.  So, for instance, there is a scalar function "[dbo].[fn_diagramobjects]" on which the "public" role has "Execute" privilege.  So, I added the following line:
    EXEC ( 'GRANT EXECUTE ON [dbo].[fn_diagramobjects] TO [' + @RoleName + '];' )
Once I had done this for all the elements in the "Securables" list, I wrapped that up in a while loop on a cursor selecting through all the roles in my roles table.  This explicitly granted all the permissions of the "public" role to my database roles.
At that point, all my users were working again (even after I removed their "sysadmin" access--done as a temporary measure while I figured out what happened.)
I'm sure there's a better (more elegant) way to do this by doing some kind of a query on the database objects and selecting on the public role, but after about half and hour of investigating, I wasn't figuring it out, so I just did it the brute-force method.
In case it helps someone else, here's my code.

Once that is in the system, I just needed to "Exec GrantAccess" to make it work.  (Of course, I have a table [RoleList] which contains a "AppRoleName" field that contains the names of the database roles.)
So, the mystery remains: why did all my users lose their "public" role and why could I not give it back to them?  Was this part of an update to SQL Server 2008 R2?  Was it because I ran another script to delete each user and add them back so to refresh
their connection with the domain?  Well, this solves the issue for now.
One last warning: you probably should check the "public" role on your system before running this to make sure there isn't something missing or wrong, here.  It's always possible something is different about your system.
    Hope this helps someone else.

  • MS SQL 2008 R2 Named instance: Login failed. Microsoft SQL server, Error: 18452) - Tryig to access using the FQDN assigned for the backup network card.

    Hi,
I have a windows 2008 R2 Enterprise servers with standalone MS-SQL 2008 R2 named instance.  The server is having two networks, once production and the second for backup. The server FQDN is resolving to the production IP. The backup NIC
DNS dynamic update is disabled and an "A" record is registered with the dns.  While trying to connect to the instance using the management studio:
Successfuly able to connect using the instance name, the production hostname, production IP and backup IP.
but while trying to connect to the insance using the backup hostname getting the below error:
"Login failed. The login is an untrusted domain and cannot be used with windows authentication. (Microsoft SQL server, Error: 18452) "
This is required for the backup tool to get connected using the backup FQDN of the server.
Should I need to create a host name alias,  request you to kindly assist me with the best recommedation to fix this.

    Hi,
It might be a kerberos issue.  Check that there are valid SPN's registered using the setspn utility - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731241.aspx

    Msg 3624, Level 20, State 1, Line 3
A system assertion check has failed. Check the SQL Server error log for details. Typically, an assertion failure is caused by a software bug or data corruption. To check for database corruption, consider running DBCC CHECKDB. If you agreed to send dumps to
Microsoft during setup, a mini dump will be sent to Microsoft. An update might be available from Microsoft in the latest Service Pack or in a QFE from Technical Support.
    Msg 0, Level 20, State 0, Line 0
A severe error occurred on the current command.  The results, if any, should be discarded.

If you check your sql server error log folder you will see dump files created. You need to send those dump files to Microsoft for inspection because outside of microsoft product support the symbols for reading the dumps are not available without which it
wont be easy to find the issue.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028589
In the meantime check if you are on the latest version of Service Pack and if not apply the latest service pack. Majority of these kind of assertions are bugs which are solved in Service Packs/Cumulative Updates.

  • Need some sort of SQL Server error log parser?

    I have over 100 MSSQL instances - ranging from SQL2000 - SQL2012.
Currently, I'm querying using EXEC SP_ERRORLOG to read the log files. With the querying method, I cannot always be on top of things as I like. And frankly, I just check once a day for a period of 24 hours or so.
I'm wondering if there's an utility / software / solutions out there that does the following:
    1) constantly monitors the error logs of all instances
    2) present the log files in an orderly manner for each instances as needed.
    3) email out a group of people for certain error / severity / state number.
Putting this in SQL Server Security because I'm mainly interested in errors like 18456 Login failed either from reboot or actual login failed.
    Thanks

You can try that using Powershell
srvr.txt should contain a list of servers, I would prefer same SQL version.
    Save the content to ReadingErrorlog.PS1
    param
    [String] $infile,
    [DateTime] $date,
    [int] $last,
    [String] $OutFile
    function getUNCPath($infile)
    $qualifier = Split-Path $infile -qualifier
    $drive = $qualifier.substring(0,1)
    $noqualifier = Split-Path $infile -noQualifier
    "$drive`$$noqualifier"
    $srvr=get-content c:\DBAScripts\srvr.txt
    foreach($svr in $srvr)
    $UNC=getUNCPath($infile)
    $readbuffer=get-content -path \\$svr\$UNC -encoding unicode | select-object -last $last
    $i=0
    [Datetime] $date
    [String] $Outbuffer
    $outbuffer=""
    foreach($line in $readbuffer)
    $i++;
    $mydate=$line.substring(0,22)
    Write-host $Mydate
    if ($line -ne "")
    if($mydate -ge $date)
    if ($line -like "*Error:*")
    write-output "$i: $line"
    $outbuffer=$outbuffer+$line
    add-content -path $outfile -value $outbuffer
    sample call
    PS:\>.\ReadingErrorlog.PS1  "f:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Log\errorlog"
     "2012-05-01 12:00:00.00"
     10  c:\DBAScripts\output.txt
You may need to re-work on the code here and there.

I have tried to delete it by right clicking and delete. I have tried by query.
    exec
    sp_removedbreplication
    N'<sqlServerName>'
    exec
    sp_droppublication @publication
    = N'<sqlServerName>'
I have looked at many forums.
I am trying to do this as 'sa'.
    Do you have any suggestions?

    johnyvee,
Firstly, exec sp_removedbreplication should be corrected in your msg above to have the parameter of 'databasename' instead of 'sqlservername' same for the droppublciation procedure, it must be passed the publication name and not the servername.
Secondly, go to the properties of 'TASS' database and under Files make sure you have an owner specified, specify sa for example.
