Transferring images out of Aperture library

I recently acquired Aperture and plan to import my existing library into the Aperture library. My existing library consists of a lot of .nefs and almost as many jpgs. Once my existing library is imported I plan to let Aperture manage and backup the images in a vault, and delete my old library file structure (after waiting long enough to be confident everything is safe).
My question: is it possible to pull an old jpg out of the Aperture library and insert it into another program without opening Aperture? For example, if I want to put an image in a greeting card, is there any way I can go into the Aperture library through the Finder to locate and transfer the image?
Thanks!
Steve

Yes, but it isn't elegant.
Right click on the Aperture Library and select "Show package contents"
Pick the Project and again, right click and select "Show package contents"
Then, out of the list of folders, one per image, try and figure out what image you need (or Spotlight if you know the filename).
There again, launching Aperture and exporting the image isn't that slow after all.
Possible to do it with Automator/Applescript as well I believe. Unsure there is a script out there but quite likely.

  • Dragging Images Out Of Aperture 3 Halves Resolution?

When I drag my images out of Aperture 3 into Photoshop or onto my desktop, it halves the resolution and drops the dpi to 72. If I put the image back in Aperture and repeat the process, the resolution halves again. Any idea as to why?

, but when you're doing a lot of editing, it's easier and faster [I find] just to drag it out into photoshop.
You could set up Aperture to use Photoshop as external Editor:
Just set the external Editor to "Photoshop" in Preferences > Export > External Editor.
Then you just need to right-click the images in Aperture and select "Edit with Photoshop" from teh contextual menu.
And the edited image will be recognized by Aperture as a version of the Image in Aperture.

  • How do you move images in one aperture library to a new aperture library

how do you move images in one aperture library to a new aperture?

    Hello, Patricia,
Do you want to create a new Aperture Library with the images you select or to import them into another existing library?
To create a new library based on selected images use the main Aperture menu:
File -> Export -> Project (Folder, album) as New Library.
To import a part of an Aperture Library into another Library, export the Aperture items as new library, then import that library into the destination library. That way you will ensure, that all versions and metadata are exported.

  • Importing referenced images into the Aperture library

I've searched and seen related questions but not this one exactly.
I have images that I unknowingly (new aperture user) imported as referenced files. Now I'd like to import them into the aperture library without loosing ratings, etc so that they are included in my vault. How do I do this without starting over with these images?
    Thanks - Rick

  • Having trouble with images in old Aperture Library?

I have and old Aperture Library that I updated.  I opened a project in that library and tried to export some photos to my desk top.  I got an error message that was a error with about 10 images.  I went back to that same project and now those images are blank with the upside down question mark? That says “Unsupported Image Format”  Any help would be much appreciated!!
    Thanks,
    Jeff Skinner

    Hello Jeff,
I don't undersand that with iphoto? The images are so old I forgot if they were originally iphotos or aperture files.
I saw the "iPhoto Original" keyword attached to one of the images in question. This keyword usually is set for an original master image, when you import from iPhoto.
I cannot find anything special about these imiages???  I noticed that there is no file size for the corrupted files.
If the image format is not supported, then probably Aperture cannot read the file size.
Not sure if the images are managed or referenced?
If these were imported from iPhoto, then they might have been imported as referenced, if you set the "Store Files" selector to "In their current location" on import. That would mean, that the original masters are still in your iPhoto Library, and if you edit them using iPhoto this may break the references to your masters in Aperture.
I think I just located the original imaiges in an old hard drive!
That is good, at least you still have a backup; but did you see the imported, unsupported images in the masters folder of your Aperture Library? It would really help to know the exact condition of the images that are problematic. Or are they not in the library? That would mean they are referenced, but then the exclamation-mark tag in the Browser is confusing - I then would expect an icon with a broken arrow.
It did not happen until I tried to export them though?  What can I do to prevent this from happening futher?
Then Aperture probably did not notice that something was amiss with the images, until it needed to access the master image files for export and noticed that those could not be read. As long as you do not try to export or to edit the images, the Previews are sufficient, but on export the master has to be processed.
The master image files of the other images in the project may be problematic as well - make sure you have a working backup, before you try anything at all with other images in that project.
    Cheers

  • Transferring images out of iPhoto but keeping original date

I'm currently backing up all my images from iPhoto 4 onto CD (and elsewhere). When I transfer them the copy has todays date rather than the date they were originally created. Is there anyway to transferring them to back up and keep creation date so I retain the timeline.
    thanks in advance

    Hello -
I recently backed up my photo archive from my old G4 desktop to an external hard drive, then imported everything into iPhoto on my new MacBookPro. A number of photos are now categorized with 'original date' as 2007, though I know they are from a trip in 2006.
Is there any way to change this original date to the correct date, or otherwise weed them out of the calendar view under 'library', or do I simply need to distrust / ignore the annual organization and make my own 'album' and/or folders to deal with the mislabel?
Assuming the original files are correct (I unfortunately cannot check right now), would transferring the files directly between the computers solve the problem? Is there a way to back up without corrupting the original date field?
    Thanks,

  • Want to clear images out of Aperture and start over

Probably a dumb question, but I "played" around with Aperture-- imported some images etc and even have a couple of projects.
However, after doing some study-- listening to tutorials I would like to start over.
How can I clear everything out without losing anything.
Thanks for any help you can give me

I found the vault getting rather large and in 1.5 you can have your masters in different folders or hard drives.
Under the 'File' menu you can select 'Relocate Master'. So select the project you want to move, choose 'Relocate Master' from the 'File' menu and Aperture moves the masters & versions from the Vault to the location of your choice. I gaind a lot of hard drive space doing this, relocating masters to another drive.

  • Need help, duplicate "false" images in my Aperture library

*The blank spots you see are just me masking photos that may not be work safe so disregard those.
The issue I am having is the blue circled stacks and the 2 green circles stacks, if I select (single click) the blue one the green also become selected, if I try an select either of the green ones the blue one gets selected, if I move the blue on around the page they all move but in random places usually a couple rows apart.
Everything was fine with these images as I tested and practiced with Aperture for the fist week or so.
Last night I referenced my 2009 motor sports season to its own project (54,000 images) and it imported the locations and was building previews fine.
So as its building the previews for the motor sports project I decided to combine 2 other projects into one... that is the one you see here with the strange triple image copies.
The images have only been imported once and open, export and edit fine.. I just cant seem to get rid of the fake or false copies in the green circles.... any ideas?

I do need to come with system, all this is testing and getting familiar with Aperture prior to making to a permanent part of my work flow.... I have everything backed up at work and even a bootable copy of this home system ready to go if I cant repair the damage I have done (I will only loose a few hours of edits/version I like better with Aperture vs. my old way...I hope I dont, but not the end of the world )
The 50,000 motor sports images are JPG's and are referenced to an external firewire 800 drive... 2009 track work is the project the main folder BeaveRun 2009 with 23 separate event folders in that

    http://www.pbase.com/image/120197387/original.jpg
Everything else is imported and stored in my library and was done a week prior to my issue and has worked great.
The triple strange stack copies are not "real" if I click to highlight one they all light up as selected, but the readout at the very bottom of the Aperture page correctly displays "1 selected-166 images displayed" even though you can see all 3 are highlighted with the white outline .
    (screen shot jpg)
    http://www.pbase.com/image/120194191/original.jpg
several of my shots now have false copies (cant be selected or moved individually, they just float around randomly somewhere near the real ones) its just the one project I moved images into got messed up my be because Aperture was still rendering preview of my 2009 Track project? Anyway because they are not real and cant be selected individually I cant delete them or anything without also affecting the real ones

  • I'm trying to export all of the images in my Aperture Library...

... but can't export with the original dates/times.  I'd also like to keep my album structure.  I DON'T want to change the filenames.  Saving the other Aperture information (such as ratings, keywords) would be a bonus, but not a necessity.  Any ideas?

How are your reading the date/time information?  They are in the EXIF fields, which Finder doesn't show (it shows the file creation date, which is something else).
What are you going to do with the exported Images?
While there is tremendous flexibility in Finder-folder creation options on export (see this page in the User Manual), there is no way I know of to export your Images into a Finder folder structure that mimics your Library Folder structure.  You assuredly can't mimic your Album structure -- Albums contain pointers to Images, not Images, and each Image can be in an unlimited number of Albums.
Keywords are always exported with Versions.  Ratings are best "baked in" as keywords -- select all Images with each rating and mark them with an equivalent keyword prior to export.

  • Transferring images from one iPhoto library to another.....

I recently went on holiday and took lots of photos and loaded them daily onto my MBP, however now I am back home and I would like to transfer the holiday photos to my iMac which holds my master iPhoto library.
What is the best way to go around this to ensure that I do not lose any images and/or image quality.
    Thanks in advance.

Ideally just plug your camera into the other computer and import the pictures.
If the pictures are no longer on the camera then put both your Macs on the same network and turn on Photo Sharing: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iPhoto/8.0/en/6371.html
__You can then drag the photos from the one computer's iPhoto Library to the other.
Alternatively you can highlight the pictures you want on the other computer and go to File > Export > File Export > Kind > Original and export to a folder on the desktop. You can then move that folder using File Sharing or an external drive to the other computer and import them there.
And Finally, you could burn them to a disk and then bring the disk over.
All these methods give you the exact same image you imported to iPhoto originally. No loss of image quality.
    Hope that helps.

  • Is anybody else seeing image corruption in Aperture Library?

    Folks:
I am new to this forum, but I have encountered a serious issue and I need to know if anybody else is seeing this. If not, then that would point at my platform as the issue rather than the app. What I am seeing is images being trunicated after import from the SD card. The preview is correct (whole image) but part of the image is gone and not recoverable. Additionally, I am seeing corruption of images when I use the Highlights and Shadows function -- it introduces lines into the image. On one case, I saw that using duplicate versions of a single image, attempting to adjust the second version also corrupted the first version. If I export the image, the issues are still there.
Has anybody else seen this issue? I am on V1.5.6 with the ProTools update installed.
    Thanks in advance.
    Respectfully,
    Bill Caid, San Diego

I have a similar problem. I have been shooting on a new EOS 40D, and after 3500 frames the images appear corrupt when I import them into my computer. I have put up examples on my iDisk public folder
    idisk.mac.com/ThorvardurGodi-Public
I have tried a new memory card, CF, to no avail. The reason why I am not certain it is the camera, is that corrupt images on my computer, are fine in the camera LCD, even when I zoom into them. Therefore, I have a difficulty explaining if the fault is not in the system or somewhere on the way to the hard disk.
Please if anyone knows this problem, or a solution to it, please respond.
    Best
    Thor

  • Re-attach facebook images with Aperture library items.

I have been publishing subsets of my images to facebook for a while, since way before the integration was built in.
I have several facebook photo collections, which now show up in aperture, but there is no connection between the local library image and the remote (FB) one.
I would like to re-connect the online image to the offline image, without loosing the comments, likes etc that are attached to the online image... I HAVE all the images in Aperture, and they have the same names in FB "collections"....
To date, I can find no way to re-attach the images, i really really do not want to loose the FB interactions, but i really really want to re-link the images to the original... I am guessing i am going to have the same problem when i get to sort out flickr too.
I would also like to get a watermark in them too.. but i guess that is another thread in the making.
Thanks in advance for any advice or handholding to sort this one out...

    Could you clarify this
To shift / update the library between desktop and laptop I have been exporting the library - jpeg full size
If you are exporting projects as libraries then this is confusing.
Is it possible when you first looked at the size (how are you doing that by the way?) Aperture had not finished generating all the previews and when you checked the size again it had?
Have you done this workflow since your first post? Has the library continued to grow? If you do the steps again does the library change size?
You coild get a program like Download OmniDiskSweeper for Mac - it is free and will list break out the Aperture library showing you how large each piece is. This might show something.
However it is possible that there isn't aeven  problem here.

  • Image Bands/Corruption in CS5 When Editing out of Aperture

Not sure whether this issue is related to Aperture or just Photoshop, but I'm seeing some strange behavior in Photoshop when I edit an image out of my Aperture library.  Here are the steps I take to see the problem:
    1. In Aperture (3.1.1) I right-click an image and choose Edit with Photoshop CS5.  This creates a new version in PSD format for editing, since I maintain my images in an Aperture library.
    2. The image opens in Photoshop but the image is distorted.  I've attached an example:
Note that this issue goes away when I change the zoom factor from 33% to 100%.
    I'm running:
    Photoshop CS5 12.0.2
    Aperture 3.1.1
    OS X 10.6.5 (Snow Leopard)
15" Unibody MacBook Pro Intel 2.53 GHz Core 2 Duo
I've tried both video cards (High & Low performance setting in Energy Settings): NVIDIA GeForce 9400M and 9600M GT
    Any help?

I can just recommend general trouble-shooting.
If the issue should be hardware-related (bad RAM for example), then it might be difficult …
    Boilerplate-text:
As with all unexplainable Photoshop-problems you might try trashing the prefs (after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed) by pressing command-alt-shift on starting the program or starting from a new user-account.
System Maintenance (repairing permissions, purging PRAM, running cron-scripts, cleaning caches, etc.) might also be beneficial, Onyx has been recommended for such tasks.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/onyx.html
Weeding out bad fonts never seems to be a bad idea, either. (Validate your fonts in Font Book and remove the bad ones.)
If 3rd party plug-ins are installed try disabling them to verify if one of those may be responsible for the problem.

  • Aperture 1.5: External editor not bringing image back into Aperture?

    Hi,
I am running Aperture 1.5 and have Noise Ninja installed as my external editor. I can successfully send an image from my Aperture library to NN and edit it there, but when I save the image, it is not brought back into Aperture. Further, if I try to send another image from Aperture to NN while NN is open, a new TIFF version is created in Aperture, but nothing opens up in NN.
I've been using Aperture and NN for about a year, and it has always acted like this, so I've basically given up on trying to use the External Editing feature in Aperture, but after some research it seemed like this shouldn't be as difficult as it has been for me.
Has anyone else had a problem like this and been able to resolve it? And does it matter that my files are referenced, and not stored in the Aperture library?
    Thanks all
    Burt

    Burt,
Did you ever find a solution? I'm having the same problem with Photoshop files not saving back into Aperture. I haven't been able to figure it out.
