Triggering Elapsed time measurements

Hi everyone, can anyone help me with this problem?
I am trying to create a system for measuring the time between triggers
from my oscilliscope as part of a larger program. I have implemented a
while loop, which aquires data from the oscilliscope for each
itteration of 'i'. The visa commands in this include a 'wait for
trigger' VI, which only allows the aquisition to occur, and hence 'i'
to increase, once the oscilliscope has triggered from my experimental
data. Hence, theoretically every cycle of my system is captutured.
I have used an 'elapsed time' express VI to measure the time that the
program has been running for. However, i want this VI to reset every
time my while loop iterates to give an exact measure of the time since
the p
revious trigger. The input for resetting appears to require a
boolean pulse to do this, as the conection of a boolean constant cause
the time data to be permanantly reset. My oscilliscope drivers do not
have any kind of boolean output for this kind of syncronisation. Does
anyone know a way in which i can produce such a boolean pulse every
time my while loop itterates?
Please could you reply to this group as my registered email is no
longer valid
Thanks
Tom

  • How can I make a timer that will record elapsed time up to 15 hours with a PCI-6503E DAQ card?

I'm a beginner LabVIEW programmer, but need to take measurements of elapsed time from the start of data acquisition for up to 15 hours. I'm using a PCI-6503E card. Looking at examples on the web and LabVIEW, itself, I was only able to find a way to take time measurements with a DAQ card up to 167 s, unless two counters were tied together, but there are no instructions on how to do that. Could someone help me? Thanks.

I suggest you to look in the Resouce Library: inside it there is plenty of useful examples.
I found this VI with two cascaded timers in the Measurement hardware > Counter/Timer > Event/Time Measurement cathegory:

I used to use " set timing on " in sql to get the elapsed time
    set timing on
    elapsed time :XX:XX:XX ,

    thanx alot

regarding to point 1 : u know there are three modes for system ; query, enter_qeury,and normal. when the system is not noraml so it is either query or enter_query , and both are query processing ( as i think) so it the elapsed time . it also by using timer stpos when system finish query ( normal)
why you dont prefer timers ..... ( it important please to explain )

  • Cost in explain plan vs elapsed time

    hi gurus,
i have two tables with identical data volume(same database/schema/tablespace) and the only difference between these two is, one partitioned on a date filed.
    statistics are up to date.
same query is executed against both tables, no partition pruning involved.
    select ....... from non-partitioned
    execution plan cost=92
    elapsed time=117612
    select ... from partitioned
    execution plan cost=3606
    elapsed time=19559
though plan cost of query against non-partitioned is quite less than partitioned, elapsed time in v$sqlarea is higher than partitioned.
what could be the reason please?
    thanks,
    charles

if elapsed time value is very volatile(with the difference in explain plan cost) , then how can i compare the performance of the query?Note that the same query with same execution plan and same data can provide different execution times - and due to a number of factors. The primary one being that the first time the query is executed, it performs physical I/O and loads the data into the buffer cache - where the same subsequent query finds this data via cheaper and faster logical I/O in the cache.
in my case i want to compare the performance change before and after table partitioning. Then look at the actual utilisation cost of the query and not (variant) elapsed execution time. The most expensive operation on a db platform is typically I/O. The more I/O, the slower the execution time.
I/O can be decreased in a number of ways. The usual approach in the database environment is to provide better or alternative data structures, in order to create more optimal I/O paths.
So instead of using a hash table and separate PK b+tree index, using an index organised table. Instead of a single large table with indexes, a partitioned table with local indexes. Instead of joining plain tables, joining tables that have been clustered. Etc.
In most cases, when done correctly, these physical data structure changes do not even impact the application layer. The SQL and code in this layer should be blissfully unaware of the physical structure changes done to improve performance.
Likewise, changes in the logical layer (data model changes) can also improve performance. This of course does impact the application layer - and requires a proper design and implementation in the physical layer. Often proper data modeling is overlooked and flaws in it is attempted to be fixed by hacking the physical layer.
my aim is to measure the query performance improvements, if any, by partitioning an existing tableWhy not measure current I/O before an operation, and then after the operation - and use the difference to determine the amount of I/O performed by that operation?
This can be implemented in a start/stop watch fashion (instead of measuring time, measuring I/O) using the v$sesstat virtual performance view.

  • How to display elapsed time on TPC-2006 (Pocket PC 2003) as mm:ss?

The small attached PDA vi is a simple "egg timer" that measures elapsed time in minutes and seconds.  I've tried every formatting trick I can think of, but cannot get my TPC-2006 to display the elapsed time as mm:ss.  It always displays single digit minutes and seconds using one digit instead of 2.  By this I mean that an elapsed time of 1 minute and 6 seconds will display as 1:6.  My customer expects that elapsed time to display as 01:06.
I tried attaching a %t constant to the "format string" input of the "format into string" sub-vi, but the deployed display showed %t instead of elapsed time.
The second question is, how do I get rid of the up/down icons in the strip display box?  They do not show in the virtual front panel, but always show up in the deployed application.

    Hi Jeff,
I solved your first problem. The format string you were looking for to wire into the Format Into String function is %02.0f. Honestly, I can never remember what the syntax is for format strings, but I've devised a method anyone can use to make it really easy. First of all, place a numeric constant on the block diagram. Right click the constant and select Format and Precision. From that dialog, make the changes you like. You can actually see the changes propogate to the constant in real-time if you can see the block diagram constant. In your case, the change you wanted to make was Zero Padding - 2 spaces - pad with zeros on the left. After you've configured your number to look like you want, click on the Advanced Editing Mode radio button at the bottom. This is where you can manually enter in Format Strings for numeric constants or controls. The trick is, whatever changes you currently have made in the default editing mode will show up as a format string that you can copy and paste and use as you like. Hope this helps!

  • Calculate elapse time of a Java thread  before execution

    Hi,
I would like to enquire how can I calculate the elapse time of a Java thread BEFORE this thread is executiing or running.?
I wish to estimate the elapsed time of each Java thread before execution to better schedule these threads to run on multiple processors for load balancing testing.
    Please help
    -meileng-[

You can grab the system time in the initiating thread immediately before calling start(), and as the first step in run() in the new thread.
However, this measurement is utterly meaningless, as it can vary between architectures or even between consecutive runs on the same box. Furthermore, even once a thread starts, it may do nothing more than that one grab-the-system-time instruction before it get swapped out for a theoretically unbounded amount of time.
By definition, if you spawn multiple threads in Java, you don't know or care which one get CPU time when, except as you control by syncing, sleep, wait, notify, notifyAll, and whatever control priorities give you. Additionally, you don't know when the OS will give your VM cycles, and on multi-CPU machines, you don't know how many CPUs it will get when it does get cycles.

  • Elapsed time between 2 points

    Hello,
I'm trying to measure the time between 2 datapoints.
When the data acquirement begins the time should be saved and when the signal reaches 90% of it's max.
Those 2 times then get subtracted and then you have the elapsed time.
But I'm not quite sure how to do this... I was thinking with flat sequences.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Are you constantly capturing a signal?  What is your sample rate?
What you need to do first to capture the signal.  You can then find the maximum value with the Array Max & Min function.  Calculate your 90% (0.9*Max).  Search the data until your get greater or equal to the 90% mark.  Get that sampling number.  Your time is then number of samples to the 90% mark divided by the sample rate (in Samples/Second).

  • Triggering and simultaneous measurements

    Hi everybody
I've written a Vi to to acquire data simultaneously from 7 devices. I'll be using cDAQ9178 with NI9203. The vi will acquire current values 4 to 20mA. Could you please check the attached file and let me know if I need to improve it.
I have some question and I should be grateful if anyone can help me to answer them.
    1. How to open the binary file from write to measurement file by EXCEL?
    2. Is it better to use write to spreadsheet for data logging, if yes how to include the time column??
    3. I'm going to use external signal for triggering through PIF0 port, is it Ok to do that through dag assistance?? I've not tried yet but it seems straightforward?
    4. Finally I have another vi for valve control that should be triggered with the measurement vi, is their any way to do that?? I was thinking about notifiers but I don't know how to use them ?
Sorry for asking to much  I really in urgent need of all of this. I should finish my data acquisition system by Tuesday

    1. How to open the binary file from write to measurement file by EXCEL?
If you select TDMS as the file format in the write to measurement file, you should be able to open it directly from Excel if you install the TDMS Excel Add-In. Be aware that at 1kHz data rate, you will exceed the capability of old versions of Excel to read the entire file in about 65 seconds. Newer versions can read more, but anything over a couple thousand points gets difficult to analyze. That is about my limit. Over this, I go to something else for analysis, such as LabVIEW or Mathematica.
    2. Is it better to use write to spreadsheet for data logging, if yes how to include the time column??
The write to spreadsheet file is very inefficient for data logging and cannot be recommended. Given your data (an array of waveforms), TDMS is your best bet. The write to measurement file Express VI is the easy way to do this. I, personally, prefer the control I get from using the TDMS API directly. Note that under the hood, the output of the DAQ Assistant is an array of waveforms with individual t0s and dts. The t0s are all different due to the fact that your 9203 is a scanned device, not a simultaneously sampled device. It scans at 200kHz, so the differences are not large, but they are there. I would convert the DDT into an array of waveforms, then use the native TDMS API, but I have a lot of experience. Since you are in a hurry, the Express VI using TDMS is probably your best bet.
    3. I'm going to use external signal for triggering through PIF0 port, is it Ok to do that through dag assistance?? I've not tried yet but it seems straightforward?
That should work fine. Given your continuous acquisition, the trigger will only start the acquisition, not gate it or trigger it at later times.
    4. Finally I have another vi for valve control that should be triggered with the measurement vi, is their any way to do that?
We do not have enough information to answer this question. Specifically, how is the valve being triggered (boards being used, hardware interface, software interface). The ideal way would be to run it through the same cDAQ 9178 so that it can be synchronized through hardware. Software synchronization cannot be guaranteed better than about ±50ms. Read up on how to synchronize things through DAQmx and you should be good.
    Good luck!

One Step At A Time, Maybe Two...

I would just use the Tick Count (ms).vi.  Call tick count when you want to begin counting and call tick count once again when you want to stop counting.  Subtract the first value from the second value to find the elapsed time in milliseconds.  Then convert to whatever units you want.

  • Within the TCL and NPL, how do you start a DAQ-STC timer to count the elapsed time spent in time critical code?

Clarification: I have a 6030E DAQ board which has a built-in DAQ-STC counter chip. I've created a RTOS for my PXI8175 controller. Unfortunately, while in the TCL clock interrupts are ignored and therefore any time based operations are erroneous. Is there a way to tell the TCL to service clock interrupts? Otherwise, perhaps the following concept should be implemented: Initial Time Stamp + elapsed time spent in TCL = Final Time Stamp

While the system clock might fall behind, there are a number of ways to measure elapsed time accurately. Here they are in ascending order of accuracy:
    1) Tick Count - Each tick is 1.000686 milliseconds.
    2) DAQ-STC counter - The base clock is 20 MHz, thus the finest period of measurement is 50 nanoseconds.
    3) NI-TIO counter - The base clock is 80 Mhz, thus the finest period of measurement is 12.5 nanoseconds.
    4) RDTSC - Read Timestamp Counter is an assembly instruction which reads timestamps right off the CPU. The period depends on CPU speed (i.e. 1 GHz yields 1 nanosecond period).
Programming #1 requires two calls to Tick Count and a little math. There are shipping DAQ examples that demonstrate how to count events/time with counters, so that addresses #
2 and #3. As for #4, there's an RT shipping example that demonstrates how to use RDTSC. There's also an RT template, which is identical to the RT example I mentioned.
Let me know if you need more info.

  • Elapsed Time in my V$SQL

    Hi,
Can someone answer this please?. I'm bit perplexed by the elapsed time in my v$sql

This table is quite small, only 44 records and if i run the statement in Sql plus, it runs in a
flash. But why this enormous Elapsed time in V$SQL. Is my conversion of this time to
    seconds/execution correct?
Elapsed time in seconds/execution: 1.84467440681166E19/1000000/2786327=6620451 seconds!
I guess there is something seriously wrong here. I'm running on a 4 CPU server. DB version is 9.2.
I see similar figures in some of the innocent looking Insert statements as well.
    thanks in advance,
    Sunil

ELAPSED_TIME in v$sql also includes all wait times for that sql. Is it possible that update is waiting for locks some time? See the following case.
    SQL> create table test2 as select * from dual;
    Table created.
    SQL> update test2 set dummy='A';
1 row updated. From another session try to update the same row.
SQL> update test2 set dummy='B';Wait for some time. Then rollback the first session.
    SQL> rollback;
    Rollback complete.Now look at v$sql.
    SQL> select sql_text,executions,elapsed_time from v$sql where sql_text like 'update%test2%';
    SQL_TEXT
    EXECUTIONS ELAPSED_TIME
    update test2 set dummy='B'
             1     29413712
    update test2 set dummy='A'
1         2506The first update's elapsed time is very small. The second update's elapsed time is high because of the wait for the lock.

  • How can I display the elapsed time of the course using Advanced Actions in Captivate?

I have a Captivate course which is approximately 35 minutes in length. On each slide I would like to display to the user, the current elapsed time.
    EXAMPLE:
    25/35 minutes complete
The 35 would remain static, so I have been working with the elapsed time system variable in CP: elapsed:$$cpInfoElapsedTimeMS$$
I can't seem to get the variable to properly display the elapsed time in minutes, rather than miliseconds. Attached is a screen shot of my advanced action.
Can anyone provide guidence regarding how I should structure this differntly?

I talked about that Timer widget in that blog post and pointed to another one:

If you are on CP7, you'll have this widget also as an interaction, which means it is compatible with HTML5 output. Amd there is also an hourglass interaction, with similar functionality but... did not blog about that one
PS: Check Gallery\Widgets to find all widgets. Default path is set to Interactions

  • How can I get the elapse time for execution of a Query for a session

    Hi ,
How can I get the elapse time for execution of a Query for a session?
Example - I have a report based on the procedure ,when the user execute that it takes say 3 min. to return rows.
Is there any possible way to capture this session info. for this particular execution of query along with it's execution elapse time?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
You can use the dbms_utility.get_time tool (gives binary_integer type value).
1/ Initialize you time and date of beginning :
    v_beginTime := dbms_utility.get_time ;
    2/ Run you procedure...
    3/ Get end-time with :
    v_endTime := dbms_utility.get_time ;
4/ Thus, calculate elapsed time by difference :
    v_elapsTime := v_endTime - v_beginTime ;
This will give you time elapsed in of 100th of seconds...
Then you can format you result to give correct print time.
    Hope it will help you.

  • How to use elapsed time function with state machine in Lab VIEW

    Hello
I've been trying to use state machine with elapsed time function in order to sequentially start and stop my code. The arrangement is to start the code for 1 minute then stop for 5 minutes. I've attached the code, the problem is when I place the elapsed time function out of the while loop it doesn't work, on the other hand when I place it inside the loop it does work but it doesn't give the true  signal to move to the next state.
Could you please have a look to my code and help me to solve this issue.
    Regards
    Rajab

    Thanks apok for your help
even with pressing start it keeps running on wait case
could you please explain the code for me, the use of Boolean crossing, increment , and equal functions
    Best Regards
    Rajab
OK..I modded the example to stop after 2 cycles. Also recommend taking the free online LabVIEW tutorials.
run vi. case statement goes to "initialize", shift registers are initialized to their constants. goto "wait"
"start"= false, stay in current state. If true, transition to "1 min" case
reset elapsed timer with True from shift register(counter starts at zero)."time has elapsed"=false, stay in current state(1 min). If true, goto "5min" case
reset elapsed timer with True from shift register of previous case(counter starts at zero)."time has elapsed"=false, stay in current state(5 min). If true, goto "1min" case. Also, bool crossing is looking for "true-false" from "5 min" compare function to add cycle count.
Once cycle count reaches 2, stop while loop....
