Trouble with java

I have three computers with different running systems, vista, xp and the other i dont remember. We are experiencing java problems with all three. We cannot play games on pogo, chat on my homework pages or even play games on java's web site and sometimes the sites just shut down. We have tried numerous changes through javas website to no avail...does anyone have any ideas?

  • Trouble with java security manager

    I have set up a security manager for my webapp running on Tomcat. The application enables the user to write his own scripts using Javascript, that's why I need to set up a security manager.
    Using Rhino as script interpreter, it is possible to use the standard java security mechanisms, e.g. using the security manager to handle the scripts' rights.
    I've added the following lines to my policy file:

    I was glad to see your post regarding WLS 9.2 and the troubles with enabling Java Security Manager.
    Were you able to learn any more on things like - why doesn't the admin console work when the security manager is enabled with the default policy file. Also, why is it so difficult to add permissions for your own applications and get them to actually work.
    I'd be curious to see if you were able to get it to work or if you have any insights or resources that can help with this as we are really struggling to get a restrictive policy file that works.

  • So sick of having trouble with Java and Mac!

    I bought myself a brand new MacBook Pro OS X 10.5.8 for around a year ago. Since the first month I've had so many problems with my Java. It's eighter not working, or its is so slow that you can't work with it, at all.
    Yesterday I was playing a game, were you're in need of Java. It worked perfectly. Then suddenly, it stopped again. And I tought, since I had not used it for a while, I just had to update it. So I clicked at the "software update" and updated everything. I don't think Java was at the list. Still wasn't working. So I went to Apple.com and searched for the "Mac OS X 10.5 update 10" and found it. I downloaded it, and installed it about five times or something, still not working. I've tried everything that came to my mind to try fixing it, but nothing works. What can I do? I'm so sick of having this problem every time I'm in use of the mac. Realy start to regreat the expensive bought of this mac.
    Please, someone help me. I hate the tought of wasting 16 000,- Nok at this pc, when it's not working the way I'm using it..

    Very Important, how much Free Space is on your Hard Drive first of all? Click on the Macintosh HD on the Desktop, then do a Get Info on it.
    Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
    *Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

    Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
    (Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
    If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

    I use a Java-based modeling tool that very few out there are probably familiar with. This tool allows me to run models (program) from within the development environment, to create Applets or create jar files that can be executed in a stand-alone fashion.
    I am using a database on my local harddrive to read in some data using JDBC, so am not using the Applet option with certificates. The development environment is expensive, so can't be distributed. That leaves the stand-alone option.
    The model (program) I've written runs perfectly fine in the development environment and, previously, has worked fine as a stand-alone program. However, the stand-alone option isn't working anymore, because I keep getting this error.
    I am not much of a Java programmer; I'm learning as I go along. If anyone can help me solve this, I'll be most appreciative

    Hi I am ancountering the same problem with the 'heap space'.
    Is there any way I can find out what it is set to for my system? I dont believe its 32Mb and dont want to increase it randomly to too large a size if theres no need for it.

    I'm new to using Java, here is my problem, I'm running windows XP professional, I've download and installed j2re1.4.1, when I try to open Java.exe, a DOS command screen opens and closes and nothing else happens, when I try to open one of the games that came with it nothing happens. What am I doing wrong? Please help.

    you can't 'open' java.exe
    That file represents the Java interpreter. It must be passed a valid .class file that contains a main() function.

    Please check out the following:
    1. Be sure that the jar file will be viewable from classpath and that the provider you want to use will be in java.security file.
    2. In the java.security file you should have something like this:
    security.provider.1=sun.security.provider.Sun
    security.provider.2=com.sun.crypto.provider.SunJCE
    3. If you wish, you can test your program with another JCE implementation, like cryptix.

    You should familiarize yourself with the JavaMail API and the servlet API--this is much too broad a question to properly answer in a forum. The J2EE Tutorial shows how to send a mail message using JavaMail from a session bean, but the technique is similar to what you would use from a servlet:

  • Trouble with Java 2D Graphics

    I have a servlet which creates some graphic components on the server and then encodes the graphics as a JPEG using Sun's codecs on a BufferedImageStream.
    The graphics involve overlaying filled areas. According to the 2D api the default AlphaComposite rule is to use the SRC_OVER rule where the added area will hide any area it overlays, but it should leave the other areas unchanged. Unfortunately in my app I am finding that the overlayed area not only masks the areas underneath it, but it also changes the colors of the uncovered areas to its current color. I have tried applying AlphaComposite rules explicitly with no luck. Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks

    Now here's the interesting thing: in the constructor of my Java class there's a call to pack() to initiate my Java GUI. When I remove that call everything works fine (but then I haven't got a GUI though). setVisible(true) in the Java code also gives that problem.
    Has C++ or the Xm library some troubles with the Java GUI? Or what the hell is going wrong?
    PS: On Solaris, the very same code works perfectly...

    I really need a solution.
    Is it possible it has something to do with threads?
    Do I have to do AttachCurrentThread or something like that? Is that necessary?

    With Access I can make the following and everything works well:

    but if try to do it in my application (it uses Access), it doesn't work - I just can't understand that!!!
    In my application the "month" is always the currently month taken from the "System". Look what I'm doing...

    Hi Katia,
    I'll bet the problem lies with the characters you're using to escape the LIKE clause. You're using the ones that Access likes to see, but that's not necessarily what's built into the JDBC-ODBC driver class.
    You can find out what the correct escape wildcard characters are from the java.sql.DatabaseMetaData.getSearchStringEscape() method. It'll tell you what to use in the LIKE clause.
    I'm not 100% sure about your code. It doesn't use query1 anywhere. I'd do this:

    I have see in the nwa if there are some applications or services that are stopped but all the necessary it's started, just one question : in the pdf for upgrade from 7.0 to 7.1 no one speaks about ejBean or about a creation of it ... it's necessary an ejBean ?? Beacause in the file .sda of the file .sca that i have downloaded there are more of the adapter with ejBean ....

  • Trouble with primitive arrays and casting, lesson 521

    hi everyone!
    there is a problem i discovered right now - after years with java where was no necessity to do this.....
    and i'm shure this must have been the topic already, but i couldn't find any helpful resource :-/
    right here we go:
    1. an array is a (special) kind of object.
    2. there are "primitive" arrays and such containing references to objects. of course - and i imagine why - they are treated differently by the VM.
    3. then both are - somehow - subclasses of Object. whereas primitive types are not really, primitive-arrays are. this is hidden to the programmer....
    4. any array can be "pointed" at via local Object variable, like this:
    Object xyz = new int[6];
    5. arrays of Objects (with different dimensions) can be casted, like this:
      Object pointer = null;
      Object[]   o  = new SomeClass[42] ;
      Object[][] oo = new OtherClass[23] [2] ;
      Object[][][] ooo = new OtherClass[23] [2] [9] ;
      o = oo = ooo;     // this is save to do,
                                   //because "n-dimensional" object-arrays
                                  // are just arrays of  other arrays, down to simple array
    pointer = o;         // ok, we are referencing o via Object "pointer"6. but, you cannot do this with primitive types:
      int[]  i1 = new int [99] ;
      int[][] i2 = new int [1] [3] ;
      i1 = i2                  // terror: impossible. this is awful, if you ask me.

    inside, i know that there might be regular objects or arrays, and for this case i have some special hidden method, just for arrays... now try to find it out:

              BlackBoxes(     (Object [] )  x );         // wait: this is a cast! and it WILL throw an exception, eventually!

    }ok ? now, to process any kind of array, the special method you cannot reach from outside:

    but, you cannot use this with primitive type arrays.
    using generics wouldn't help, because internally it is all downcasted to Object.
    BlackBox( new Integer(3) ) ---- does work, using a wrapper class
    BlackBox( new Integer[3] ) ----- yep!
    BlackBox( 3 ) ---- even this!
    BlackBox( new int[42] ) ---- bang! ClassCastException, Object[] != int[]
    i'm stuck. i see no way to do this smoothly. i could write thousands of methods for each primitive array - BlackBox( int[] is ) etc. - but this wouldn't help. because i can't cast an int[][] to int[], i would also have to write countless methods for each dimension. and guess, how much there are?
    suppose, i ultimately wrote thousands of possible primitive-type methods. it would be easy to undergo any of it, writing this:
    BlackBox( (Object) new int[9] [9] );
    the method-signature would again only fit to my first method, so the whole work is useless. i CAN cast an int[] to Object, but there seems no convenient way to get the real array out of Object - in a generic way.
    i wonder, how do you write a serialisation-engine? and NO, i can't rely on "right usage" of my classes, i must assume the worst case...
    any help appreciated!

    your code looks weird to me g and i think there's at least one false assumption: .length of a multidimensional array returns only the number of "top-level" subarrays. that means, every length of every subarray may vary. ;)
    well i guess i figured it out, in some way:
    an int is no Object;
    int[ ] is an Object
    the ComponentType of int [ ] is int
    so, the ComponentType of an Object int[ ] is no Object, thus it cannot be casted to Object.
    but the ComponentType of int [ ] [ ] IS Object, because it is int [ ] !
    so every method which expects Object[], will work fine with int[ ] [ ] !!
    now, you only need special treatment for 1-dimensional primitive arrays:
    i wrote some code, which prints me everything of everything:
