Troubleshooting memory leak

I've spent about 4 hours now trying to figure this out...  I have a Popup that's been removed using PopupManager.removePopup(..) but is still lingering around.  Using the profiler, I've found that it has 4 Object Reference Paths:
1) Popup > Class (focusedContainer) > Object (ContainerGlobals)
2) Popup > PopupSkin > TextInputSkin > RichEditableText > CSSTextLayoutFormat > Dictionary > Class (computedFormatCache) > Object (HostFormatHelper)
3) Popup > PopupSkin > Label > Dictionary > Class (cachedFontsForObjects) > Object (IEmbeddedFontRegistry) > Class (classMap) > Object (Singleton)
4) Popup > PopupSkin > Label > Dictionary > Class (cachedFontsForObjects) > Object (EmbeddedFontRegistry)
Why would any of these keep my popup from going away?  I can force the garbage collector to run, and it's still around.  Any help would be appreciated- I have no idea what to do next to troubleshoot this.

The first one.  In theory, the framework should have set focus back to
whereever it was when the popup was first created and then focusedContainer
would point to that thing instead of the popup.  If the popup was created at
startup time, you may have to set focus to some component in the main app.

  • How to fix huge iTunes memory leak in 64-bit Windows 7?

    iTunes likes to allocate as much as 1.6GB of memory on my dual-quad XEON 8GB 64-Bit Windows computer and then becomes unresponsive.
    This can happen several times a day and has been going on for as long as I can remember.  No other software that I use does this - only Apple's iTunes.  Each version I have installed of iTunes appears to have this same memory leak.  Currently I am running version 10.7.0.21.
    I love iTunes when it works.  But having to constantly kill and relaunch the app throughout the day is bringing me down.
    Searching for a fix for this on the internet just surfaces more and more complaints about this problem - but without a solution.
    Having written shrinkwrapped software for end users as well as for large corporations and governments for more than 25 years I know a thing or two about software.  A leak like this should take no more than a day or two to locate using modern software tools and double that to fix it.  So why with each new version of iTunes does this problem persist?  iTunes for Windows is the flagship software product Apple makes for non-Mac users - yet they continue to pass up each opportunity they have had over the years with each new release to fix this issue.  Why is this?
    Either the software engineers are not that good or they have been told NOT to spend time on this issue.  I personally believe that the engineers at Apple are very good, and therefore am left thinking that the latter is more likely the case.  Maybe this is to coax people to purchase a Mac so that they can finally run iTunes without these egregious memory leaks.  I would like to offer another issue to consider.
    Just as Amazon sold Kindles and Google sold Nexus tablets at low cost - not counting on margin for profit - but instead they wanted to saturate the marketplace with tools for making future purchases of content almost trivial to do with their devices.  Apple also counts on this model with their pricer hardware - but they also have iTunes.  Instead of trying to get people to switch to a MAC by continuing to avoid fixing this glaring issue in iTunes for Windows I would like to suggest that by allowing their engineers to address this issue that Apple will help keep Windows users from jumping ship to another music app.  The profit to be made by keeping those Windows users happy and wedded to the iTunes store is obvious.
    By continuing to keep this leak in iTunes for Windows all it does is lower my esteem for the company and start to make me wonder if the software is just as buggy on Macs.

    I have same issue. Ongoing for more than 1 year and currently running iTunes 11.3.
    My PC is Dell OptiPlex 990 I7 processor, 8GB ram, W7 64 [always keep things patched up to latest OS updates etc]
    I use this iTunes install to stream music videos etc to multiple appleTVs, ipads, iphones etc .. via Home Sharing
    Store all my media including music, videos and apps on separate NAS  .. so the iTunes running on PC is only doing the traffic cop role and streaming / using files stored on NAS .. creates lots of IO across my network
    Previous troubleshooting suggest possible contributing causes include
    a) podcast updates  .. until recently I had this auto updates on multiple podcast subscriptions, presumably the iTunes would flow this from the PC to save on the NAS across the network .. if the memory leak is in the iTunes network communication layer (?bonjour?)  this may be sensitive to IO that would not normally occur if the iTunes file saving was local on the same PC
    b) app updates .. have 200+ apps in my library and there is always a batch of updates .. some updates 100s of MB is size .. routinely see 500MB to 1GB of updates in single update run .. all my apps are
    c) streaming music / movies .. seems when we ramp up streamlining of music or movies . memory leak grows faster .. ie within hours of clean start
    c) large syncs of music or videos to ipads or iphones .. noticed that get big problems when I rebuild an ipad .. I typically have 60+ GB of data in terms of apps /  music / videos to load .. have to do rebuild in phases due to periodic lockups

  • Memory leak in solaris 9

    Hi ,
    I have Oracle9i database running on Solaris 9. After every 6 days my solaris box went out of space although its a test box and there is no activity on the system. Why the hell it takes all the ram and swap space when there is no activity on the system except Oracle Instance is running with no user connection. What process are running in the background that takes all the memory and i have to restart this box every week. IS THERE ANT PATCH OF MEMORY LEAK FOR SOLARIS9?. I am not a solaris administrator and i have to fix this problem before moving my system to production. I would really appreciate your help.

    I have Oracle9i database running on Solaris 9. AfterI have had for some months been running oracle 9i (and 8i) under solaris 9. There have been no problems and the server has been stable.
    It sounds like you may have misconfigured the solaris kernel. It also sounds like your SGA is too large to fit in memory.
    So I guess the first step would be to check the SGA and then the /etc/system file.
    Here is what mine looks like for example:

    You need to gather more system information to help you troubleshoot.

  • Memory leak? Firefox won't load pages/open.

    Ok, I believe there is a memory leak. I am surfing ok then a page wont load. I go to taskmgr and I show that one firefox has 104,990 K of memory. The rest have at most 3,000K. After the page won't load I close Firefox. It won't open. I have to turn on PC and unplug to get it to open again.

    This issue can be caused by an extension or plugin that isn't working properly.
    Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

  • Memory leak versus inactive memory

    Hi:
    My iMac was becoming painfully slow a year or so ago. This seemed to be due to a lack of RAM, so I upgraded (2 GB to 4 GB total). This worked great, but now I seem to be running out of memory again, even when there are not a lot of programs open.
    I’ve started tracking memory usage with Activity Monitor, and typically a huge chunk of my memory is “Inactive”. I.e., at this time I have 215 MB free, 450 MB Wired, 1.6 GB active, and 1.7 GB inactive. This despite only having Word, Outlook, OmniOutliner, Safari and iTunes open. Under System Memory (in Activity Monitor) it says Finder at 250 MB, Word at 131 MB, iTunes at 120 MB, Outlook at 80 MB, OO at 46 MB, and Dropbox at 34 MB (then a bunch of smaller usages). Even being very generous, the total memory usage only seems to add up to ~1GB, far short of the 4 GB installed.
    I have no idea what a real “memory leak” actually is, but I’ve heard the term bandied about. I’ve had some weird, nonreproducible system crashes in the last few months where the system just totally freezes, often (but not always) putting a nice colour pattern on the monitors. Looking around, some folks have said that this might be due to a memory problem since everything else seems to check out AOK.
    Thus, several questions:
    Might I have a “memory leak”? If so, how do I diagnose and fix it?
    What is the 1.7 GB of “inactive” memory being used for? Why is my Free memory so small when this big chunk of inactive memory is sitting there?

    The way Safari accumulates memory is normal. The way it is trying to page the memory to disc and error-ing is not. I think the integrity of your disc volume / catalog and directories may be to blame.
    Try a bit of basic maintenance:
    Repairing permissions is important, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
    Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
    In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
    This only takes a minute or two in Tiger, but much longer in Leopard.

    If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
    Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

  • Memory leak in the JVM leading to system oom

    Hi,
    We are running application server using java 1.5, tomcat 5.5 ...
    The problem is that the JVM is allocating memory continuously.
    If we look at the JVM memory from JConsole everything is OK the amount of memory allocated in the heap does not grow significantly.
    If we look at the JVM memory consumption from the system perspective, the memory usage is growing until the system runs out of memory and kill the JVM. The JVM memory usage goes beyong 1.5 Go of memory whatever options you use when launching the JVM.
    The memory allocation is so intense that it can lead to a crash in few hours with very few users connected to the application.
    We have tried JDK 1.5.05 and 1.5.06 still the same.
    We are running on a Linux Debian system wth a 2.6.8 kernel.
    Any idea of where all this memory goes ?
    Any idea on how to track and solve this memory leak ?

    Tiger and Mustang come with a number of diagnosing tools that could help
    you spot memory problems. In particular there's something called 'jmap' which can
    take a snapshot of the JVM memory.

  • My iMac keeps crashing due to a memory leak....  Any thoughts on what this means?

    I'll be using my iMac (27" late 2009) and it will suddenly cut to black.  Then after a second or two, a grey screen will appear and tell me an issue occured and to push any key to restart.  Once the computer restarts, the issue report pops up and it says I have a memory leak.  I don't know what that means, or how to fix it.  Any thoughts on the cause of why it's doing this, or the impending doom it may be heralding?  I've posted the issue report below incase anyone can glean anything from it.  Thanks for your help.

    Boot into safe mode (restart holding down SHIFT key). If no KP, then uninstall and reinstall those 3rd-party items that Roger pointed out, one at a time, and restart. Continue until you determine which ones are causing the problem. If KP while in safe mode, then most likely hardware related.     All computing devices (which, in truth, BB's are) suffer from memory leaks. Just like your PC, a reboot can be a healthy thing. If you think your device is suffering from that, you should indeed do a reboot. With power on, remove the battery and wait a minute. Put the battery back in and power up (be patient...it can take a while). The symptoms of needing a reboot are varied - random strange behaviour, tremendous slowdown, odd errors, etc.
    Occam's Razor nearly always applies when troubleshooting technology issues!

  • Memory leak issues persist in Safari 6.0.5 (it's about time that Apple actually fixed this)

    Safari has been notorious for its memory leaks for years, as I'm sure many of you know. I stopped using Safari as my main browser in 2010 or so, and I instead began to use Chrome. However, I recently had to use Safari to access some webpages, and I neglected to quit out of it. A few hours later, my computer slowed to a complete crawl. I was confused, because my computer never slows down to such a crawl, so I went into Activity Monitor to find the 'Safari Web Content' process using all of my available RAM, which was nearly 6 GB. Needless to say, Safari was force quit after that. I've heard that some plugins will cause this, but Flash was my only active plugin. Flash is, indeed, a heaping pile of crap that will readily eat resources as it sees fit- but this never happens to me in Chrome, and I use Flash all of the time n Chrome. This was after it had been sitting idle for quite some time, and I imagine that it would have used more RAM if it could.

    Regardless of whether Flash is being used, from your Safari menu bar click Help > Installed Plug-ins.
    Try troubleshooting extensions and third party plug-ins.
    From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that off if there are any installed. Quit and relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, turn extensions back on then uninstall one a time to test.
    If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
    Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow all other plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
    If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.

    Checked to see exactly how much space is available ??
    Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
    Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
    Checked the startup disk lately?
    Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
    Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
    Click:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
    If the disk needs repairing, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you can access the built in utilities in OS X Recovery to repair the startup disk.

  • How to root out memory leak with  Java JNI & Native BDB 11g ?

    We are testing a web application using the 32-bit compiled native 11g version of BDB (with replication) under 32-bit IBM 1.5 JVM via JNI under 64-bit RedHat Linux. We are experiencing what appears to be a memory leak without a commensurate increase in Java heap size. Basically the process size continues to grow until the max 32-process size is reached (4Gb) and eventually stops running (no core). Java heap is set to 2Gb min/max. GCs are nominal, so the leak appears to be native and outside Java bytecode.
    We need to determine whether there is a memory leak in BDB, or the IBM JVM or simply a mis-use of BDB in the Java code. What tools/instrumentation/db statistic should be used to help get to root cause? Do you recommend using System Tap (with some particular text command script)? What DB stats should we capture to get to the bottom of this memory leak? What troubleshooting steps can you recommend?

    That's troublesome... DB itself doesn't have stats that track VM in any useful way. I am not familiar with SystemTap but a quick look at it seems to imply that it's better for kernel monitoring than user space. It's pretty hard to get DB to leak significant amounts of memory. The reason is that it mostly uses shared memory carved from the environment. Also if you are neglecting to close or delete some object DB generally complains about it somewhere.
    I don't see how pmap would help if it's a heap leak but maybe I'm missing something.
    One way to rule DB out is to replace its internal memory allocation functions with your own that are instrumented to track how much VM has been allocated (and freed). This is very easy to do using the interfaces:
    db_env_set_func_malloc()
    db_env_set_func_free()
    These are global to your process and your functions will be used where DB would otherwise call malloc() and free(). How you get usage information out of the system is an exercise left to the reader :-) If it turns out DB is the culprit then there is more thinking to do to isolate the problem.
    Other ideas that can provide information if not actual smoking guns:
    -- accelerate reproduction of the problem by allocating nearly all of the VM to the JVM and the DB cache (or otherwise limit the allowable VM in your process)
    -- change the VM allocated to the JVM in various ways

  • Memory Leak in edited images?

    I am using Captivate 4.0.1 Build 1658 (this means that the patch from May 2009 is applied) on Windows Vista.
    The following has happened to myself and at least 2 other developers.
    We edit a slide background image in Photoshop...when the  movie plays, a flash of the previously unedited background shows.  I have tried re-editing the background and it does not fix the problem. I have tried eliminating transistions and it does not fix the problem.  I have noticed that this happens when background images are edited in Photoshop as well as within Captivate when bitmaps are pasted onto a slide background and then merged into the background.
    I don't know if the correct term for this is a memory leak, but the closest mention of this problem I could find was here: http://blogs.adobe.com/captivate/2009/05/captvate_4_patch_update.html

  • Inactive Memory leak in Safari 4.0.3

    There is a memory leak in Safari 4.0.3. I haven't isolated it to a particular page since I usually have 15-20 tabs open when I notice the spinning ball, caused by VM paging. When this happens, according to Activity Monitor, Safari.app uses between 500-2000mb of "Real Memory", yet when I close it almost all of the blue "Inactive Memory" is released. The last time this happened, it freed 5.4gb.
    This is getting annoying and is certainly bad for the SSD. Any idea if there's a fix?
    BTW I've got the new Pro with 8 gigs of DDR3 and an SSD, and 20mbit FIOS internet... There is no excuse whatsoever for the spinning ball!

    The way Safari accumulates memory is normal. The way it is trying to page the memory to disc and error-ing is not. I think the integrity of your disc volume / catalog and directories may be to blame.
    Try a bit of basic maintenance:
    Repairing permissions is important, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
    Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
    In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
    This only takes a minute or two in Tiger, but much longer in Leopard.

    If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
    Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

    Hi.. I have run into a serious memory leak issue with flash on
    internet explorer 7.0.5730.13 (everything works with firefox). It can be

  • Observed Memory Leak When Invoking Controls in Workshop 8.1 sp3

    Hello,
    We have developed a website using Bea Portal 8.1 sp3. In testing we have observed severe memory leaking problems which occur also in the production environment where WebLogic is not being run in debug mode. The troubleshooting was started by profiling the testing environment (running in debug mode) using JProfiler. The leak was isolated to occur especially in control method invocation via InvocationHandler call. The object being leaked was character array. After further study we noticed that the method call which this framework InvocationHandler was delegating had especially large return value. Namely a map consisting of ~5Mb of content. After reviewing our own code for possible leak source and coming up with nothing obviously wrong we started to suspect that something was leaking memory in the WebLogic framework code. As the leaked object was character array we suspected that the framework was calling toString() method of the return value and the string was never released. To prove this we constructed a small test program which just demonstrated passing large object as arguments and return values in invocations to WebLogic Workshop control from page flow. The memory consumption in WebLogic monitor and console output proved that indeed the toString() method was invoked 1 times in invocation per argument and 2 times per return value. Furthermore by returning empty string in one test and string of several megabytes in other from toString() one could observe exactly matching memory leaking. Manual running of the garbage collector did not release the memory.
    To resolve this problem we have tried to alter the Workshop logging configuration in WorkshopLogCfg.xml. Lowering the log level to debug in categories caused much more invocations to the toString() of the arguments. We did not monitor the memory leaking in this test. Raising all the category levels to fatal did not have effect compared to the original settings. Also removing all categories did not have effect on toString() calls.
    We have established quite reliably that this leak occurs with our configuration both in development environment (Windows XP) and testing environment (Redhat Linux) both running WebLogic in debug mode. Both of these environments have out of the box log configuration. We have also observed memory leaking in production environment but it has not yet been profiled to see whether the leak is 100% surely due to this same problem.
    We have not yet tested this in sp5 nor sp6. Switching service packs is not solution for as in the moment as we are not able to switch the service pack in production environment due to reasons which are out of our control.
    We would appreciate confirmation whether this issue is real and any solutions available like configuration modification, patching or switching service pack. Also links to existing articles about this issue would be nice to have.

    I did not find any known issues on this. But since you can replicate the issue, could you please contact BEA Support and open a case and have this followed?
    Since we may have to do some testing/profiling etc with different service packs with your sample, it would be better to follow up via a support case.

  • Can Java program cause memory leak?

    Can Java program cause memory leak or memory crash? I don't mean any memory overflow related exceptions. I mean something like core dump in UNIX or error reports in Windows XP.
    If it can really happen, in what circumstances? I raise such a question because our J2EE based system had really caused memory leak in Windows XP systems, but so far we still fail to troubleshoot the problem.

    Your code may leak memory. There are many, many, many reasons this could be. All of them represent bugs in your code.
    You should get a profiler to identify the problem spots of your code.
    You spoke of a memory crash as well. The VM may crash with some bug in the VM, or a bug in native code but that is not relevent to your problem. A memory leak is a problem in your code.
