Trying to hook up 2 computers to transfer info

I have a eMac g4 desktop with a bunch of stuff on it that I'd like to put onto my new MacBook Pro laptop. I connected the two with a firewire cable and restarted both and I can't seem to find either on the Network and the Hard drive won't come up on either screen. I used to be able to do this and I cannot for the life of me remember what I'm doing wrong! Any help appreciated, thanks.
Meghan

You're close; you need to hold the t key down while starting up the eMac to boot it into FireWire target disk mode (the eMac will be the target, the iMc will be the Host).
You'll also want to refer to Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4: Transferring data with Setup Assistant / Migration Assistant FAQ.

I am trying to hook my macbook pro to a projector, which has a VGA cable. I bought a VGA to HDMI adapter, but whenever I hook it up, the screen on my macbook just goes black and I can't make it do anything else or even show up on the projector.
My laptop is still on; it just has a black screen that I can't get rid of without shutting down the computer by holding the power button.

    Hey there lynmrigg,
It sounds like have an HDMI to VGA adapter connecting your MacBook Pro and your projector but the screen on your computer goes black and no image appears on the projector. I would use the troubleshooting in the following article to help resolve or isolate the issue here, named:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
    Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.

  • When i tried to hook my macbook pro up to a projector to show a dvd, the screen on the computer and projector screen went black as if it were trying to connect. yet it didn't show up. The dvd played when it wasn't connected to the projector. any ideas?

When I tried to hook up my macbook pro to a projector and play a dvd, the dvd wouldn't work. I would only get an error message. The dvd worked when it wasn't connected to the projector but doesn't work when it's connected. It just shows a blank screen as if it's trying to connect. Also, the connection works when I don't play the dvd. Any ideas?

  • Trying to hook up to Cable modem etghernet issues

I have a G3 with a 10.4 OS. I am trying to hook it up for my daughter. I am trying to wire it into my families computer network. I plug in the ethernet cable into router, and I get no response on the computer. I hook it directly into the cable modem, and I still get no response. None of the numbers that should be coming through from the modem to the computer are available.
The cable company could not figure out why, especially since all my other computers are still on-line. Is my ethernet the problem?
Any thoughts would be appreciated. I am not terribly tech savy.
    Thanks

    Hi Mark
Not sure that I'm fully understanding your post "numbers coming through?".
Anyway. look at the router, does the router show another green light when you plug in the mac? if not, then the 2 are not talking to each other.
Check your TCP/IP settings the DHCP number should start with a 10.x or a 192.x
If is starts with a 169.x then the ethernet is not talking to the router. Make sure that the connection is ethernet using DHCP and NOT PPP (in system preferences - network).
I've had one or two machines that have been reluctant to change from 169. but have done so after several restarts.

The Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI adaptor will only pass video in most cases. You will need to run a separate audio cable along with it. Likely a 3.5mm (male-to-male) cable. Or a 3.5mm (male) to red/white RCA (male) cable. Just depends on what audio input ports your TV has dedicated to the HDMI input.

Drag applications from your main desktop off the right side of the screen and they will appear on the TV.  This is the extended desktop mode.

  • I am trying to hook my macbook pro to a sony bravia TV via DVI to HDMI cable and the TV will not recognize the signal. The same set up has worked with three other, though different televisions. Any thoughts?

I am trying to hook my MacBook Pro to a Sony Bravia TV via DVI to HDMI cable and the TV will not recognize the signal. I have used the same setup with three other TV's, each a different brand with no problem. Any ideas?

Is the TV set to take input from the HDMI connection?
On your computer, if you open the Displays preferences and do not see an Arrangement tab (or there is an Arrangement tab that shows only a single monitor) then there is something physically wrong with your connection.  Try clicking Detect Displays just to see if the computer can now sense the presence of the connection.  Check your connections.
If you do have an Arrangement tab, and it shows two screens, then click Gather Windows to bring the TV's Displays preferences on to your main screen if the TV is not yet showing an image.  Set the proper resolution (probably 720p, 1080i, or 1080p).  Set the refresh rate (probably 60Hz) if that preference is shown.  You should see a picture at this point.  I  recommend turning off mirrored displays if it is enabled.

  • Im trying to hook up my macbook pro with Lion os to new tv with Kanex mini displayport hdmi with no luck, any help?

I'm trying to hook up my macbook pro to my new LG tv, I have the desktop screen on my tv (I was told I had to open a 2nd desktop and then drag my dvd screen into it, it still doesn't work.

ok so you have a macbook pro with minidisplayport and you can see your desktop on your LG screen?
go to system preferences>displays>arrangement and turn off Mirroring (if it's on). This will give you two separate areas and look similar to this.
If you want quick access to this setting click the "show displays in meny bar"
a little pointer, you see on my setup that there is now one screen with no white bar at the top and one with. This marks where your main screen is (and where the menu bar and dock appear) you can click and drag this white bar to your new LG tv.
Most new tv's have a setting to fit the screen to the tv size. This is a setting that allows for edge to edge persision instead of overlapping which you'll see in older tvs. Take a look at your tv's manual for more about this sort of connection.

  • Trying to hook up a USB cable mouse in Afghanistan (i.e. no wi-fi).  Nothing is cuing up when I plug it in.  Please help?

Hello, I am a relatively new Macbook Pro user.  Only previous experience with a Mac before this was many years ago in Iraq.  I have a relatively cheap USB optical mouse, that I am trying to hook up so I can use Lumosity.com easier.  It is not an Apple brand - it is literally the sort of thing that comes with a cheap set of things in a 3rd-world store.  I attempted plugging in a Magic Mouse from Apple earlier, and no, it did not work either.  Simply put, I have two mouse devices that do not want to work in an environment that has no wi-fi (which I presume is why the Magic Mouse won't work, seeing as all it is supposed to require is to be turned on), and cannot seem to find success with this other cheap(er) optical mouse that has to be physically plugged into the laptop.  Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.
Quick list of things I've already tried:
    1.  Taking the Magic Mouse to an area that has wi-fi (failed).
    2.  Plugging the optical mouse into different USB ports on the laptop (failed)
    3.  Yelling at both devices for failing me (no result = failed ironically).
    4.  Turning the Magic Mouse on and off (failed).
List of things that I have not done incorrectly:
    1.  Not tried a different device.
    2.  Putting the device(s) on any glass surface.
Any further assistance would be most greatly appreciated.

OK... the corded mouse is an unknown, since you're saying it's a very cheap device. At this point, if I understand you, you're not sure if that mouse even works. Let's go back to the Apple mouse. They don't need wireless to work, they run on Bluetooth, which is part of your computer. You need to go through "pairing" to bond that mouse to your computer.

I have a pioneer 50 inch plasma + I purchased new from the company back in 2005.   I tried to hook up an Apple Tv to the pioneer receiver that came with the TV.   I can not get it to work.
The receiver has two HDMI  inputs in the back.  However they say they are not for PC's.  Furthermore they must be set up by going to the home menu.    I tried everything, but I can not get the receiver to talk to the Apple TV. I even tried a connector that uses an HDMI to the Apple TV that has the other side of the cable as 5 RCA cables.  I could not get the receiver to see the Apple TV.   I have a newer TV in the house, it has no problem talking with the Apple TV.  But this older system seems to be handicapped in its ability to talk with the newer Apple TV system.

    Do you have any suggestions
    Thanks

I could not access the Apple TV on the television.   If I put the Apple TV directly into by TV, I have an external sound system (entertainment system), therefore I worry that I would by pass the audio.
Thanks for taking your time to attempt to help!   Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It seems to me that the connection port is faulty.

Your notebook computer must be awake to do what you want to do.
Get yourself a longer cable, or buy an Apple-TV box and do it wirelessly.
