TS4185 There is no camera attached to this computer

Sigh, I've had this problem for a while now and just about exhausted every avenue I can think of but have yet to come up with a solution.
Problem: Accross all apps that use the camera (Facetime / Skype / Photobooth etc). Camera works fine for a while after a restart (mostly - will explain further down) but after a day or so, give or take, I will receive the dreaded "There is no camera attached to this computer." message.
Once this message has appeared, it appears to be game-over until one of the following:-
     •Restart Computer (sometimes works)
•PRAM reset (sometimes works - might just be down to the restart rarther than the actual resetting of the PRAM)
•Holding power button on restart until 'beep' (Usually works)
Note that:-
•Once I get this message, the camera no longer appears in the System Profiler.
•Camera functions fine when it's on.
So far I have tried:-
•using different apps: doesn't seem to matter which app I'm using, i.e. if I exclusively use Skype, the camera will still fail. The same is true of photobooth
•doing the above restarts/resetting things: In all cases, the fix is temporary and the problem persists after (usually) a day or so.
•Leaving the app running: I thought if I kept the camera "active" all the time, it might continue to work. Not the case, after a day or so I came back and just had a picture frozen on in and upon restarting facetime, you guessed it, "There is no camera attached to this computer".
•Formatting disk and reinstalling OS: I thought that the issue might be to a conflict somewhere in the preferences etc so did a clean reinstall of the MacOS 10.8 however, note that this has occurred under 10.6, 10.7 & 10.8.
From the above I deduce that either:-
•There is a fault/conflict in the software / OS though it would have to be something that only kicked in after a certain amount of time. Note that I've not yet timed how long until the camera fails as this is somewhat impractical.
•There is a hardware fault that again, only surfaces after a given amount of time. I'm thinking this is more likely after having done the clean install and the problem persisting. I thought I would seek advice on here before "opening her up"!
I've tried to be as thorough as I possible in diagnosing the problem and though there seem to be a few threads discussing how to solve the problem, I've not come accross one where it repeatedly arises.
Thanks,
Jono.

Update 2:
Since booting in and out of bootcamp, the facetime camera seems to be working a little better. I doesn't seem feasable but I wonder whether something on the windows partition was not relinquishing the camera when shutting down and changing back to MacOS...
That's all I can really think of as I've not done anything much else different.
Hope this helps someone and I'll try to update should the camera stop working again!

  • IMac with message of "there is no camera attached to this computer"?

My iChat was working fine recently when all of a sudden I am only able to do audio chat. The computer states "there is no camera attached to this computer."
I did have this problem once before about a couple years ago, after I had that day done some software updates. What solved the problem back then, after I had researched the problem on the discussion forums, was to unplug the power cord and all connected wires, wait a minute and then replug power cord while holding in the power button. This worked back then.
This time around, I had not done any recent updates. My ichat had been working fine. I looked under the more info on this computer, under hardware and USB and (I believe) it doesn't detect the camera. I tried fixing with the same approach as last year and nothing has changed.
Any thoughts on the subject would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I know of no other way to get it working.
You could try a Combo Install.
    The List is here http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/
Run the Combo version of the OS level you are at over the top of what you have.
You could also try Repair Permissions with Disk Utility in Applications/Utilities using the First Aid tab.

  • There is no camera attached to this computer

I'm looking for some assistance on an issue that I've have been working on for the past 24 hours.
iChat will no longer recognize my camera (nor will Yahoo IM, iMovie or QT Pro). I read thru all of the related Apple support pages as well as the Discussion pages, but nothing has been able to resolve my issue.
Everything was running fine yesterday morning until I installed Delicious Library. I was on a video chat immediately prior to the installation, so I'm certain the camera/cable is still good. Since the installation, my iSight is not recognized by any of my apps. I deleted all Delicious Library files. I have performed multiple 'repair disk permissions', have deleted all of my associated plists (iChat, yahoo IM, QT, etc), have even deleted and reinstalled QT.
The camera still works in that the green light comes on and I get the 'shutter' sound when plugging it in.
I'm running a powerbook G4 with Tiger 10.4.3 with the latest QT and iChat.
Your assistance is appreciated. Hopefully I can get this resolved in enough time to have a video chat with my family today...

    Ralph,
That did the trick (the QT reinstaller link)!
I deleted all of my plists that referenced programs that used the cam (iChat, yahoo IM, QT), ran the re-installer and repaired permissions. All appears to be working properly.
Not sure why this re-installer is different from what I was doing before...
Thanks for your assistance. Much appreciated.

  • Getting error msg: No camera attached to this computer (it's built in)

Why am I getting this error message when I have a built in camera on my MacBook? That, plus my Photo Booth is not showing a camera - does not work. Any suggestions?

  • No camera connected to this computer

I should add that iChat CAN find the microphone that's built-in to the camera, but still can't find the video. It still says "There is no camera connected to this computer."
ichat does not recognize my camera. ichat v3.1.9 New HUEhd camera. The camera shows up when I check "About this Mac", under "Hardware", USB. And the camera works, I can watch myself in the video shot using the camera's program. I just can't get ichat to recognize it. Any suggestions??
    Thanks

Well, I've been plagued by this issue for months. I believe it was the 10.4.10 upgrade that essentially wiped out any compatibility between OSX and third-party webcams that had previously worked perfectly well.
My webcam with ichatusb works okay on my home machine, finally, but I'm writing this on my mom's machine in Iowa and ichatusb does NOT help at all, even after uninstalling, reinstalling the newest version, restarting, etc. etc. The webcam audio works fine, but iChat says there is no camera attached to the computer.
It is inexcusable that Apple continues to refuse to address this widespread issue. In lieu of any shred of support from them, does anybody have another idea? I'm on a plane tomorrow morning so my time here is short..
    Many thanks,
    Sean

  • HT4757 Will this software make my Canon Powershot A700 work with os x 10.8.2 and iPhoto 11 v. 9.4.1?  Is there any way to get my camera compatible with this computer?

Will this software make my Canon Powershot A700 work with os x 10.8.2 and iPhoto 11 v. 9.4.1?  Is there any way to get my camera compatible with this computer?

    First Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If that doesn't help apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

I connected my sons Ipod Touch to my pc and it worked fine. Now, when I try to connect my iPad the following message comes up: One of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message.
I checked the cable. It surely is not the cable. If I connect the iPod again it works fine. If I use the same cable with my pc and ipad at work or my other son’s laptop, it is working perfectly. It is only on my laptop where the iPod was connected. Something tells me it got something to do with the drivers that went corrupt or something when I connected the iPod.
I searched the internet and I see a lot of people gets this message. Still no solved answers yet. Is there a place where I can download the drivers again or any other suggestions?
    Windows 7 and iPad 2
    Kind regards,

I was hoping it would be something like a USB device conflict, but now the shuffle is the only thing connected...
This article was one of the ones you linked to above in your initial post
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1369
Under Part 9. Verify that USB drivers are installed, did you try the steps in If only "Unknown Device" appears?  That appears to be your situation.
Also, you said that the shuffle initially worked well enough to do a sync, then it had the same problem again.  If you can get it to work again initially, before doing anything else, try the following.  Select the shuffle in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES.  Over to the right, go to the Summary tab.  By default, the checkbox for Enable disk use should be unchecked.  If so, check it and Apply the change.  See if that makes any difference.
(If Enable disk use was already checked, try unchecking it and Apply the change.  Basically, set it the "other way" and see if there is any improvement.)
NOTE:  When disk use is enabled, you have to eject the iPod in iTunes before disconnecting it physically.
If the disk use change makes a difference, that may provide a clue about the actual cause.

  • IPod Touch 2nd Gen - "One of the USB devices attached to this computer...

Advance Happy Martin Luther King Day to all,
Hi guys, I just got myself a 2nd Generation iPod Touch last December 2008. At first it really worked fine, I have never had any problem with it until today. early this morning when I was transferring a movie to my iPod, my PC froze, so what I did is pulled the USB attached to my iPod and I push the little button on my PC to restart it. Then after restarting, i tried to connect my iPod and it gave me an error saying
"One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it."
I tried, restarting my computer, reinstalling my itunes, repairing my itunes, and still it always gives me the same response when I try to connect my iPod. At first I thought that maybe my USB port really has problems and so tried using other ports but it always give me the same results. I even tried to connect my digicam, PSP and webcam and those worked properly, I also tried to run a diagnostic thru my USB ports and it worked well saying that I do not have problems with my USB Ports.
What will I do now? I tried reading here in apple support section but the only thing I found was for the iPod with the Wheel. Please help me fixing my problem.
    Thak you soooooooo much.

I've been trying to fix my own iPod for a while. Different problem but I think this might help.
Ultimately, if your computer HAS been able to recognise your iPod at one point, it's a driver problem.
You didn't specify which OS you're using, but I'll assume it's Vista.
    This might help you:
Download the new version of iTunes
Save it somewhere on your computer
UnZip the program using something like WinRAR or The Extractor
In the folder, locate Apple Mobile Device and double click it
    Remove the program
    Restart your computer
    Re-install the program
    Connect your iPod
Things should be working now. If not:
    Click Start
Type Run in the search field
    Type "devmgmt.msc"
Click OK if you are get a prompt
Scroll to Universal Serial Buses and look for "Apple iPod" or "Apple Mobile Device USB" or something to that effect. (If it's not there it may be in Imaging Devices or Portable Devices)
    Right click
    Properties
    Click the Driver tab
    Click Driver Details
    Tell me what you see.

Try putting it into "Disk Mode" http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
Then with it in this mode connect it to the PC and try to run the latest iPod updater to do a restore and update software if you have the option. the latest iPod updater is 2006-03-23 and can be downloaded here http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
