Tuning Flood Engine sigs

Looking to shed some light into the behavior of the Flood Engine.
According to Cisco documentation:
The Flood engine defines signatures that watch for any host or network sending multiple packets to a single host or network. For example, you can create a signature that fires when 150 or more packets per second (of the specific type) are found going to the victim host.
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/vpndevc/ps4077/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a00804cf506.html#wp1040058
As an example, lets examine the default parameters of sig 4002 UDP Host Flood.
Engine: Flood Host
Rate: 100
Protocol: UDP
Event Count: 1
Event Count Key: Attacker Address
Specify Alert Interval: No
Is it correct to say that an alert is generated if the sensor sees that source A has exceeded 100 UDP packets per second? 100+ pps could have been to 1 host, or a bunch of hosts, as long as the total packet count from source A is greater then 100. The alert however, will show the victim address and port of the triggering packet (the 101st packet in that second). Am I correct so far?
My first problem, is the NSDB signature description says "This triggers when a large number of UDP packets are directed at a host." To me, for this to happen, the Event Count Key should be set to Victim Address.
My other problem, is that no matter what tuning I try on various Flood Engine signatures, alerts are generated that are not in line with what the parameters specify.
For example, lets retune sig 4002 so that it alerts on distinct host pairs (1 to 1 relationship). So we change Event Count Key to Attacker and Victim Addresses. Now if source A sends out 101 pps to multiple hosts, I should expect to see no alerts. The only time I expect to see alerts, is if source A sent 101 pps to dest B, and another alert if source A sent 101 pps to dest C, etc. But, after extensive testing, it doesn't work that way.
Anyone care to enlighten?

There's a little catch to the flood-host engine, and that's that there is an underlying storage key of xxBx in the engine itself, so the engine is doing some summarization.. which is going to lead to odd results if you try to use the summary key in the signature itself. Back in 4.x, this was a by design thing in the flood engines and from my digging yesterday, I believe that its carried thru into 5.x as well even though the multiple flood engines were consolidated.
Summary on the attacker Axxx works just fine, but not on the victim xxBx.
I'll update this thread once I get together with the engine developer and hash this out, but I'm pretty sure that this is by design.
Take a look at signature 4003, this was firing for me while I was fooling with 4002. Or even making a custom sig using the atomic-ip engine to identify a host to host flood using a count over an interval.
I'll update this when we hash out the details about summarization.

    Regards,
    Ravi.

    Your log files too give some hint... Please verify whether following files like .xldatabasekey are present in your environment:-
    OIM application intialization failed because of the following reasons:
    oim-config.xml was not found in MDS Repository.
    Unable to find keystore ".xldatabasekey" in <DOMAIN_HOME>/config/fmwconfig/.
    Password for OIMSchemaPassword is not seeded in CSF.
    Password for xell is not seeded in CSF.
    Password for DataBaseKey is not seeded in CSF.
    Password for JMSKey is not seeded in CSF.
    Password for .xldatabasekey is not seeded in CSF.
    Password for default-keystore.jks is not seeded in CSF.
    Password for SOAAdminPassword is not seeded in CSF.
    I doubt whether OIM is properly installed in your environment otherwise .xldatabasekey would have been present in <DOMAIN_HOME>/config/fmwconfig..
    Also, as far as Weblogic starting in ADMIN mode is concerned, you may try to do the following...
    ps -eaf| grep AdminServer
    Kill the process
    Then remove the lok file. i.e. Lock files...
    rm -rf /home/oracle/Oracle/Middleware/user_projects/domains/oimdomain/servers/oim_server1/tmp/*oim_server1.lok*
    rm -rf /home/oracle/Oracle/Middleware/user_projects/domains/oimdomain/servers/soa_server1/tmp/*soa_server1.lok*
    rm -rf /home/oracle/Oracle/Middleware/user_projects/domains/oimdomain/servers/AdminServer/tmp/*AdminServer.lok*
    After that
    Take the backup of /home/oracle/Oracle/Middleware/user_projects/domains/<DOMAIN_HOME>/servers/AdminServer/data/ldap/ldapfiles (I mean CUT this folder and save it in Backup folder..
    Share the result with us....

  • Printing the First 14 Characters of Every Line in a Text File

    My text file looks like the following:
    1111097116274, H0101C58F8110C005, 1, 16:48:03
    1111097116274, H0100058F8110C006, 2, 16:48:10
    1111097116274, H00F0458F8110C006, 3, 16:48:12I want my java program to print the first 14 characters of every line. Here's what I have:
    import java.awt.*;
    import javax.swing.JOptionPane;
    import java.io.*;
    public class Read {
         public static void main( String args[] ) {
        try {
            BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new FileReader("aFile.txt"));
            String line;;
            /*String tagid;*/
            while ((line = in.readLine()) != null) {
                 char[] tagid = line.toCharArray();
                 line.getChars(0, 14, tagid, 0);
                 System.out.println(tagid);
            in.close();
        } catch (IOException e) {
             JOptionPane.showMessageDialog( null, "Error" );
             System.exit(0);
         Instead of printing the first 14 characters of every line to output, it prints the whole text file.
    Any ideas of what's wrong?
    Thanks.

    Well, that's the thing with a highly tuned, precision engine like your mind, JosAH. Adding a little alchohol to the fuel mix provides a performance boost, but as the alcohol/fuel ration increases, the performance improvement peaks and then degrades, until the performance is actually reduced. Now, I understand that in the case of the magic Grolsch, this performance curve is shifted farther to the right (graphed with Grolsch count as the independent variable, and performance improvement as the dependent variable), but it still occurs.
    I recommend nitrous oxide. You may need to get your piston heads hardened, though.

  • Set maximum instances for FTP polling

    We are in the process of implementing our first BPEL integration involving the FTP Adapter on 10.1.2. However, it is not scaling well.
    The FTP Adapter is set up to poll an FTP folder containing XML output from our sales system. Each record is in its own file. We imagine that in the event of communication disruption, the files could accumulate to several thousand fairly quickly.
    The problem we are seeing when testing for this scenario is that the adapter picks up all the files at the same time and spawns a separate request for each until it overwhelms the server.
    How can we change our process to prevent this from happening?

    Oracle will tell you that a correctly tuned BPEL engine will cope...
    but for those of us in the real world the only option I can think of that may work in 10.1.2.x is to limit the number of available threads (dspMaxThreads), and because that's a domain wide setting you'd need to create a seperate domain just for the processes with adaptors you need to limit.
    I've read that in 10.1.3 you can specify process level thread limits.

  • OIM_SERVER1 starting in Admin Mode

    Guys,
    Following Tasks(to upgrade Oracle Identity Manager from 9.x to 11g) from upgrade guide (http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E21764_01/upgrade.1111/e10129/upgrade_oim.htm#CACIBHHJ) has been completed succesfully:-
    •Task 1: Identify and Prepare Oracle Database for Oracle Identity Manager 11g (Optional)
    •Task 2: Use the Repository Creation Utility to Create the Schema in the Database
    •Task 3: Install Oracle Fusion Middleware
    •Task 4: Use Upgrade Assistant to Upgrade the Oracle Identity Manager Schema
    •Task 5: Create a WebLogic Domain for Oracle Identity Manager
    •Task 6: Start the WebLogic Administration Server
    •Task 7: Configure Oracle Identity Manager Server 11g
    •Task 8: Configure Node Manager to Start Managed Servers
    •Task 9: Start the SOA Managed Server
    In the below Task10 while starting OIM server, OIM_SERVER1 is starting in Admin mode ( i guess it should come in running mode).

  • Just a very easy question ... Please help me ....

    Dear All Experts,
    I have installed WebLogic 10.3.3, RCU 11.1.1.3.2, Oracle SOA 11.1.1.3.0, IDAM 11.1.1.3.0 on Oracle Enterprise Linux Update 5. And I have also done the configuration by running config.sh for both WebLogic to create a oim domain and OIM to config the OIM Server and Design Console ( Remote Manager not configured yet. )
    I can start up the WebLogic, WebLogic Node Manager, oim_server1. Even though I get a lot of ERRORS *<Error> <oracle.iam.platform.kernel.impl> <BEA-000000> <IAMPKR-78172>* , I can still log into the OIM as xelsysadm. However, when I try to create a organization, the following error occurred: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/thortech/xl/dataobj/tcEvent_ .
    Would any people help me please ...
    Thank you in advance
    Best regards,
    Xin

  • Workflow Issues -  Capacity planning

    Hi All,
    Can any one suggest some good practises and solution for this problem
    Capacity planning:_
    There are no standards currently available with the current team to determine the capacity based on number of instances, instance size, etc.
    Thanks in Advance

    It is a trial and error process.. Depends on the number of instances
    the instance size should be restricted to 32KB only..
    Look at tuning the engine in the Oracle 10GR3 BPM Admin manual... for all possible best practicess.
    Especially look at the JVM heap size, instances threads, exec threads for automatic activities and manual activities as well as number of database pools and database connections for the engine db as well as external db..
    Use Fuego.Fdi.DirHumanParticipant or DirOrganizationalRole or DirOrganizationalGroup instead of Fuego.Lib.Role for getting participants in groups etc..
    This reduces the number of participants that should be in the cache and is helpful when an org has a lot of employees that are being pulled from the AD..
    Look at some of the formulas for sizing etc..
    One such formula in the manual is:-
    Maximum Database Connections >= (# Interactive Exec Threads + # Automatic Exec Threads)
    Make sure most of your instance variables are of the Category SEPERATED so that they consume less space and the instance size reduces..
    I think the number of Project Variables should not be more than 256 and the number of Business Parameters should be more than 64.. Please check on this..
    Depending on the number of instances and the size of project, make sure you run only a certain number of projects on one engine...

  • IDSM-2 slow file copy

    Hi, I have FWSM and IDSM/2 module on 6500 switch in my network, and we have issue with file transfer between some machines. When server is behind IPS, transfer is very slow, 40x lower then in situation when server is only in VRF/FWSM - without IPS. Any idea? Thanks in advance

    an overworked sensor can certainly be a cause of problems. The easiest way to determine you sensor's health is to look at the % missed packets and CPU utilization from the CLI:
    sh int (%missed pactets)
    sh stat host (CPU)
    If those don;t look like the cause of your problem, a likely cause is the normalizer engine sigs. These sigs will drop packets it doesn't like and not give you an alert. Check what sigs are fireing when you're experiencing this problem:
    show event past 01:00 | include (whatever you're looking for)

  • X200 SATA I or SATA II ?

    Can someone tell me if the x200 supports SATAII 3.0 G/s bandwidth? I am planning to upgrade my hard drive to an SSD, but want to make sure the labtop supports SATAII as I don't want my SSD to be limited by the SATA 1 bandwidth. Can someone point out to me how to find this information?? I searched  a lot of webpages, and they are all kind of vague about it.........

    Optimize your system for an SSD and these steps are too numerous to list in a post, research the web and disable prefetching and NTFS last access times,  avoid chkdsk and verify your system is running in AHCI mode to reach peak performace.
    Download a copy of filemon.exe from sysinternals.com to identify any background processes thrashing your drive since they'll just preoccupy your SSD and reduce lifespan.
    AVOID using FASTFIRE, which is a rapidly spreading "ssd enhancer" and nothing more than system mode driver that sets servers to cache RAM as if they're workstations and WS as servers.
    SSD's are like jet engines compared to propellers and traditional spindle drives, even the crappiest jet runs faster than the best turboprop but a tuned jet engine runs faster than a propeller can even dream. Windows and most OS's were designed for traditional spindle drives and the caching features of every OS aren't necessary for an SSD which writes data at breakneck speeds and the background activity in Windows is as unhealthy to an SSD as smoking 2 packs a day.
    Don't just sit there, take a second and use the Kudo's button to compliment the people who help you.

  • How about a Introduction Fourm?

    something like Hi names skywolf jsut got hired at a Apple store want to jump start my lurning by Going on Apple Disussions and Helping out thanks!
    Ps not a true intro...
    What do you yall think?

    Dear Mr Wolf,
    Well, I'm not so sure your introduction isn't real.
    Your suggestion is excellent, overlooked, and used to be required of those we asked questions of. Would you hire a mechanic, to evaluate your malfunctioning Porsche, of whom you know nothing except that he likes Porsches and his hobby is answering questions about them over the phone: opinions about such mechanical problems as how to start a flooded engine or use a new feature?
    The organization I once worked for that was closest to Apple was a National Supercomputer (owned by the American people), one that served all universities on the East Coast of the USA. User Services offered free expert advice and definitive technical assistence to any university researcher who needed a supercomputer. Each of the dozen people who helped by e-mail was required to have a PhD in a different science, impressive resumé, and pass a rigorous interview.
    We posted our credentials and posted every service offered users that we were responsible for. Mine included numerical analysis and TeX, for example. We offered FAQs on line rather than on a bulletin board, because e-mail is really needed to solve a problem. Here those kind enough to offer advice are anonymous and unavailable by e-mail alias, but such a small forum as you propose would allow Apple owners to know something about the experiences and perhaps specialties of those who voluntarily field hundred of thousands of questions (for which there is no requirement but a valid e-mail address, and a respect for and wish to help users).
    Computer designs & applications have grown so much that everyone specializes, and you should expect Apple to be at least as professional as the supercomputer center and offer such a board where one can voluntarily describe one's computer interests, so you know something of the qualifications of those advising you. The previous posts speak well of the professionalism to expect here; but it would be nice for consumers to also know of their advisors' qualifications and interests. (I'm retired, not qualified, & am visiting briefly.)

    PS. If you are visiting to learn about Macs, there are much better sources. Unix, available on the 'Terminal', used to have a 'learn' command (which you can find elsewhere, if not there), and it has many, free computing languages. I should recommend 'Java' today, though all the voluminous source code available online is usually in 'C'. Install & update the free, developer's toolkit. It contains tutorials on Mac hardware as well as MacOSX (Apple's beautiful face of Unix). As one of the creators of Unix once said, to learn Unix, write programs using it. I might recommend programming in the Korn shell, Java, then C. Others will recommend other languages. (HTML is not a language, but illustrates the formatting part of one and resembles Unix's 'troff'. The marked text is analogous to source code, a brower would be an 'interpreter', and it offers instant gratification. As you learn Java, you can add frills.

  • Tuning SIG 5583 - SMB Remote SAM Service Access Attempt

    We are running Active Directory and this sig is firing 30000+ times a day. I do not want to disable the sig as we would likt to watch for external IP's as the source or destination.
    Trouble is I cannot get an event filter to work for this beast and I cannot filter it at the sig level since there is no source/destination IP settings in the sig itself (SMB Engine).
    Here is the event filter definition:-
    NAME: InsideSAM_SMB
    signature-id-range: 5583,5579 default: 900-65535
    subsignature-id-range: 0-255 default: 0-255
    attacker-address-range: $Inside default: 0.0.0.0-255.255.255.255
    victim-address-range: $Inside default: 0.0.0.0-255.255.255.255
    attacker-port-range: 0-65535 <defaulted>
    victim-port-range: 139,445 default: 0-65535
    risk-rating-range: 1-100 default: 0-100
    actions-to-remove: produce-alert|produce-verbose-alert default:
    deny-attacker-percentage: 100 <defaulted>
    filter-item-status: Enabled default: Enabled
    stop-on-match: True default: False
    user-comment: <defaulted>
    os-relevance: not-relevant default: relevant|not-relevant|unknown
    The $Inside variable is 10.0.0.0-10.255.255.255
    basically our entire internal network.
    The events I am being flooded with are single events and not summarized.
    Here is an example of an alert:-
    evIdsAlert: eventId=1192231627181681635 vendor=Cisco severity=informational
    originator:
    hostId: IDS
    appName: sensorApp
    appInstanceId: 571
    time: 11 February 2008 15:59:52 UTC offset=0 timeZone=GMT00:00
    signature: description=SMB Remote SAM Service Access Attempt id=5583 version=S262
    subsigId: 0
    sigDetails: SMB Remote SAM Service Access Attempt
    marsCategory: Info/Misc/NetBios
    interfaceGroup: int8
    vlan: 36
    participants:
    attacker:
    addr: 10.36.3.52 locality=Inside
    port: 2956
    target:
    addr: 10.11.1.63 locality=Inside
    port: 445
    os: idSource=learned type=windows-nt-2k-xp relevance=relevant
    riskRatingValue: 25 targetValueRating=medium
    attackRelevanceRating=relevant
    threatRatingValue: 25
    interface: ge0_8
    protocol: tcp
    As you can see BOTH the source and destination are within the ranges specified in the filter but the event is still firing.

    You mean replace the $Inside with a specific range like 10.0.0.0-10.255.255.255.
    Hmm. Nope. I have tried that and I have even tried specific IP addresses for the source/destination but still get alerts with exactly those two addresses getting through.
    Filtering is working though as I have a filter active also for the 'DHCP offer' sig in that I have filtered out all our 'expected' DHCP sources, and SMTP filters for 'expected' SMTP sources.
    Why can I not filter out SMB sources/ destinations such as Windows Servers and/or M$ Domain Controllers.
    Come on Cisco, event filtering was so easy in IDS4, why complicate it so much in IPS6.

  • Possible for using profiler for creating workload for Database Engine Tuning Advisor in case of SSRS reports

    I have 20 tables in SQL Server. We don't have OLAP cube.
    I have created SQL Server Profiler trace. I have clicked all reports during process.
    I have opened Database Engine Tuning Advisor.
     I have selected all tables to Tune.
     Tuning options are Indexes/No Partitioning/Keep all existing PDS
    Result is following:
     14% improvement
     10 recommendations (8 statistic for Calender table and 2 index for Calender)
    Tuning logs:
    S008 exec sp_executesql N'  LongSQLStatment including IN (@CategoryKey) Event does not reference any tables
    S007 Replaced event exec sp_executesql
    My question is that why I did not get any recommendations for other tables that Calender?
    Could it be because of SSRS parameters like @CategoryKey?
    Is it possible at all to use SQL Server profile for creating workload in case of SSRS reports with parameters?
    I have tables and reports like ProductSales, which I suppose should be get indexedbecause of WHERE statements.
     I have where statement like Month and Category and Color.

    Yes it is possible to capture a trace using profiler, but please provide the t-sql behind your dataset before I can answer your question about the DTA recommandations.

  • Message Packaging feature and PI Integration engine tuning

    Hi Folks,
    I am trying to tune up the IEngine.
    1. Do i need to restart the system whenever i make a change to any of the IE parameter. eg: EO_OUTBOUND_PARALLEL
    2. Can someone help me by giving the useful transaction codes that I would need from a system prospective to check/measure the performance of the system.
    Eg. CPU utilization, Dialogue processes free/used,
    Message packaging is a new feature with PI 7.1
    Can someone please guide me on how to implement this step by step?
    Your inputs are very much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Hank

    Hello,
    1. Integration engine tuning - No, you dont need to restart the system after changing a integration engine tuning parameter in SXMB_ADM, its a online change.
    2. system performance - use transactions st03 and st06 (cpu and workload). db02 for database. sm66, sm51 (work process)
    3. message packaging - check out this document for step by step configuration and a case study of message packaging

    hope this helps.
