Tuning Oracle Database - SGA Memory

Good morning Gurus,
  I have this environment in my company:
  SAP ECC 6
  Oracle 10g
  Aix 6.1
Our hardware resources:
  Memory: 16GB Ram
  Processor: 4 x 3.2Ghz
  IBM Blade JS12
  Recently, we migrated SAP 4.6C (Solaris) to SAP ECC (Aix). In this new version, a lot of users feel that the performance had decreased.
  I checked SGA Memory in Oracle, and i noticed that this configuration didn't used all hardware resources.
  This parameters was like these:
  sga_max_size=712M
  pga_aggregate_target=292M
  db_cache_size=292M
  processes=80
  sessions=96
  I changed for:
  pga_aggregate_target = 4096M
  sga_max_size = 4096M
  sga_target = 4096M
  db_cache_size = 600M
   I noticed, after this change the performance was perfect. We reduced the time db execution in 60%, but now it isn't occur.
   We changed this parameters on July 4nd, now the performance decrease in 30%.
   My question is, after this change, do we need to adjust the parameters in profile?
Thanks very much
Denis

Yes it is old, because there are no significant changes on automatic memory management between 9i and 10g (11g is another history), so it is "valid"
sga_max_size is not mentioned in note 830576 because the memory parameters depend on the available memory. look at the recommendations for the other "memory" parameters:
DB_CACHE_SIZE                    Size depends on the available  memory (Notes 789011, 617416)
LOG_BUFFER                       1048576
PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET             OLTP: 20 % of available memory
                                 OLAP: 40 % of available memory
SHARED_POOL_SIZE                 400 MB or greater, refer to Note 690241
As you see, there is only one "hard coded" recommendation and one minimum recommendation.
It is not possible to give a recommendation for sga_max_size.
If you do not set it, Oracle automatically calculates it.
If it is set to small, Oracle will adjust it.
What it is important is to set up the DB_CACHE_SIZE and SHARED_POOL_SIZE, they will be the MINUMUM sizes if AMM is
used

    What are the good features with we should use to fine tune the db system using em db control.

    All the diagnostics pack and the tuning pack capabilities are designed specifically to do what you ask.. As made available using the AWR and ADDM and used through the 'Advisor Central' link on the EM console.
    You use them the way demonstrated in the online tutorials: http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/oem/index.html and look through the documentation indicated, especially under the links "Demos and Tutorials"

  • Memory issue in oracle database 11g ...

    Hi All,
    I have installed oracle11gR2 on Linux (CentOS 5.5)... SErver has good amount of HDD - 669G and 16G RAM. I have two database running on this server.
    I am getting out of memory error and end user also complains about dB is very slow... I have configured memory and SGA parameter in both the database and total allocation of memory and SGA maximum size 7.5G. So I assuemd that oracle database used RAM from whatever we configured in memory maximum parameter , in my case I have allocated upto 7.5G but when I run top command I can see almost 16G is in used and only few mbs left...
    can anyone suggest me my assumption about memory allcoation to database is correct or not ? or when I allocated memory to database (using memory max parameter) then why top showing all memory in used. This is database server and no other process is running except oracle.
    Thanks in advance...

    Just enable AMM as below and forget the nitty gritties of setting lots of memory parameters ;-D
    ALTER SYSTEM SET MEMORY_TARGET=6G SCOPE=SPFILE; --select the amount of memory as per your need

  • The amount of free SGA memory available in the database

    Hi,
    How can we calculate the amount of free SGA memory available from the instance if the database is not set for Memory management.If the sga_max_size is set for a particular value and the db_cache_size and the shared_pool and all other components are specified,how can one determine whether all the memory allocated for SGA is in use?

    How can we calculate the amount of free SGA memory available from the instance if the database is not set for Memory management.When the SGA is allocated, the memory is fixed, and none of it is "free" really.
    how can one determine whether all the memory allocated for SGA is in use? Are you asking about usage WITHIN the pools? If so, shortly after startup the database buffer and shared_pool will fill-up and stay full . . . . .
    Here is the script that I use to see inside the data buffer contents:
    set pages 999
    set lines 80
    spool blocks.lst
    ttitle 'Contents of Data Buffers'
    drop table t1;
    create table t1 as
    select

    o.object_type object_type,
    count(1) num_blocks
    from
    dba_objects o,
    v$bh bh
    where
    o.object_id = bh.objd
    and
    o.owner not in ('SYS','SYSTEM')
    group by
    o.object_name,
    o.object_type
    order by
    count(1) desc
    column c1 heading "Object|Name" format a30
    column c2 heading "Object|Type" format a12
    column c3 heading "Number of|Blocks" format 999,999,999,999
    column c4 heading "Percentage|of object|data blocks|in Buffer" format 999
    select
    object_name c1,
    object_type c2,
    num_blocks c3,
    (num_blocks/decode(sum(blocks), 0, .001, sum(blocks)))*100 c4
    from
    t1,
    dba_segments s
    where
    s.segment_name = t1.object_name

    num_blocks > 10
    group by

  • Resource estimation/Sizing (i.e CPU and Memory) for Oracle database servers

    Hi,
    I have came across one of the requirement of Oracle database server sizing in terms of CPU and Memory requirement. Has anybody metalink notes or white paper to have basic estimation or calculation for resources (i.e CPU and RAM) on based of database size, number of concurrent connections/sessions and/or number of transactions.
    I have searched lot on metalink but failed to have such, will be great help if anybody has idea on this. I'm damn sure it has to be, because to start with implementation of IT infrastructure one has to do estimation of resources aligned with IT budget.
    Thanks in advance.
    Mehul.

    You could start the other way around, if you already have a server is it sufficient for the database you want to run on it? Is there sufficient memory? Is it solely a database server (not shared)? How fast are the disks - SAN/RAID/local disk? Does it have the networking capacity (100mbps, gigabit)? How many CPUs, will there be intensive SQL? How does Oracle licensing fit into it? What type of application that will run on the database - OLTP or OLAP?
    If you don't know if there is sufficient memory/CPU then profile the application based on what everyone expects, again, start with OLTP or OLAP and work your way down to the types of queries/jobs that will be run, number of concurrent users and what performance you expect/require. For an OLAP application you may want the fastest disks possible, multiple CPUs and a large SGA and PGA (2-4GB PGA?), pay a little extra for parallel server and partitioning in license fees.
    This is just the start of an investigation, then you can work out what fits into your budget.

  • Can i use "Oracle Database 12c: Performance Management and Tuning " training for getting certification on "Oracle Database 11g: Performance Tuning 1Z0-054"

    i have taken "Oracle Database 12c: Performance Management and Tuning new" training from oracle university. Now i would like to get certified on "Oracle Database 11g: Performance Tuning 1Z0-054" exam. Is it possible ?

    I essentially endorse and refer you to Matthews' and John's post above.
    I would differ with slightly with Matthew because my guess is you would often be able to use like for like 12c training for an 11g certification ( I believe there are precedents).  BEFORE ANYONE ASKS THE OTHER WAY DOESN'T HAPPEN.
    .... but totally concur with Matthew you would ill advised to procede on that basis without one of:
    - This being advertised as possible on the website : e.g. https://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=654&get_params=p_id:169 ... option 2 show courses.
    - Confirmation from Brandye
    - Confirmation from an Oracle Certification Support Web Ticket ( http://education.oracle.com/pls/eval-eddap-dcd/OU_SUPPORT_OCP.home?p_source=OCP )
    ... The more common (and in my opinion usually better) way would be get your 11g DBA OCP ( or higher first) and then take the 1z0-054.  I am almost certain they will accept your 12c course for the 11g DBA OCP.
    If you are choosing the route of not being a 11g (or 12c ) DBA OCP first but are on option 2 and relying on the course for certification then the issue is more in the balance and you are even more strongly advised to get confirmation before proceding (remember if the rules need to be changed for you only then any profit out of the exam is lost).
    In general my understanding is Oracle would prefer to encourage people to train on the latest version of product that is available for training  and will prefer to avoid restrictions which would cause you to train at a lower version.  ( This is simply my guess at Oracle University Policy ... personal opinion only).
    Having said all I have said I'd encourage you to go with the advice of the earlier two posts.

    We are preparing for 1Z0-117: Oracle Database 11g Release 2: SQL Tuning, There is shortage of material available on net.There are actually a fair number of articles about the material covered on 117 on the net, but yes, the test is new enough that cheaters have not had much of a chance to email around illegal material such as dumps yet.
    Can anybody please provide books or Dumps and share more idea about the exan.There is a significant amount of legitimate material you can use to study for the exam here:

    As for ideas about the exam -- it's probably the hardest Oracle certification exam I have ever taken:

    Hello Hussein
    Yes true, I remember it for the OCE and Linux exams they rescheduled the end date several times. As far as I know it is related to the number of participants and the given feedback.
    I've also participated to several other exams, and I must admit that it is a long and hard process to get through. When I got the feedback 10 weeks after the beta period closure, I had to review nearly all the topics to get the exams passed the second time. But this it is a cheap and good exam preparation.
    What about you Hussein? Do you think that's trivial?

  • Oracle Database 11g: Performance Tuning exam 1Z0-054

    Hi,
    I want to take the certification Oracle Database 11g: Performance Tuning exam 1Z0-054 and want to write the exam.
    To earn the OCE credentials, I know that we need to take training from Oracle University. I am not an OCP currently.
    Can I write the exam now and later take the course to meet the certification requirements? I know it is not the right way, but I can not pay $3000 for the course as of now. I can write the exam through self study. I want to check if I can take the exam now and later take the course.
    Is it mandatory to take the course before taking the exam?
    Thanks,
    naveen.

    naveen.Indeed you can take the exam now, and subsequently earn the 11g PERFTUNE OCE credential when you either:
    1) complete, submit and get verified the OU authorised 11g perftune course (possible but seems a little cart before horse).
    or
    2) Become 11g DBA OCP.
