Turnkey solution for so many features?

We are a small Tutoring business.
We would like to add to our site the ability of our clients
to login (secured) and have access to several features.
1. Make one time or scheduled credit card payments
2. View student progress reports (on-line form) posted by
tutors
3. View a monthly calendar and scheduled sessions and have
the ability to schedule or reschedule sessions
4. View other pages including recommended reading lists etc.
In addition, we would like for our employees to be able to
login and post their availability to the same calendar (not
viewable by the client) or make changes to their schedules. In this
way we are trying to automate scheduling as much as possible. Also,
we would like our tutors to be able to update automated progress
reports and to post notes that can viewed by the client.
We anticipate adding a subscription service (free to clients)
that showcases a comprehensive list (updated daily) of family
events in and around the Los Angeles area. We would like events
from this page to post to our clients calendar on a daily basis. We
would like the events page to have an advanced searchable database
of current, future and past events so that a parent can search by
age or by type of event (museum, musical etc).
Finally we would like to control all of this through a web
based control panel, to manage all users and employee information,
calendars and other content. We would also like the subscription
service to be easily editable as we anticipate outsourcing the
internet research and content editing and content and images will
be changing daily.
I thought of using a turnkey solution, kind of a shopping
cart but could not figure a calendar into it. If such a package
already exits I would be very interested.
My skills are limited. Any ideas would be a great help. On a
small budget at this time.
Thanks in advance!

I have had my activations reset and have synchronised my two pc's to the same account. This has
cured the problem for me and my ebook is useable once more.
I still believe there is an opportunity for Adobe developers to alleviate this by clarifying some of the "do's and don'ts" in the installation notes for the software. (That is assuming that the "activation limitation" is something that cannot be dispensed with).

  • Is there a turnkey solution?

I have seen my friends using PC or XBox as video server for their HDTV. I have also read many discussions in this forum about doing the same with the Mac mini. However, these still look like trial and error DIY projects. Is there a turnkey solution for average consumers with little computer knowledge? Apple has been very good at targeting the less technical computer users. e.g. the iMac series targets users who just want to turn it on and use with little configuration.
It would be nice if Apple would come up with a Home entertainment bundled package for Mac mini. It would be reasonable to expect a HDTV as the only display to the system and hifi audio such as coaxle or optical audio out etc. And of course bluetooth keyboard and mouse should be standard in the bundle because the users is expect to be using the system on the couch in front of a big screen TV. With the baby boomer generation getting older, many affluent old folks are sitting home watching their bigscreen HDTVs. Such a turnkey systems would introduce the Apple to the living room as an entertainment / Internet appliance instead of a computer.
I heard that Microsoft is trying to do the same thing with the XBox 360. The Mac mini seems to be at the right price for such market. Is Apple planning to get a piece of the pie?

  • New update for Pages is not working properly, loosing many features. Where is the citation skill for instance?

Very bad moment to change Pages version for a cloud-light version of Pages. Many features lost. No citations anymore. How is possible Apple release this software without proper testing?

By the way, relying on instanceof is kind of poor. Sometimes it's unavoidable, but if you can redesign your program so that it doesn't have to do this, it would be good.
You could add the Student objects to two different lists (it's still the same object, just used twice, so there's little waste of resources), one list represents all students, and one list represents just postgraduates or just undergraduates.
You could also perhaps have a method in Student which basically says "add yourself to the appropriate list", and when you want to display student lists, call that method on all students.

  • Best coverflow and missing feature alternative solutions for all platforms.

Personally for me coverflow was a important feature. Not JUST a feature but what really defined iTunes as BEING iTunes.
I would have actually loved if apple instead of removing it expanded on it and made it faster, better, stronger. With things like back label support  so on and so forth.
I'd like the communities thoughts on some of the best alternatives for the missing coverflow & other features currently left out of iTunes 11 on both Mac and Windows.
Also, If there is a way to link(link up) any of those to iTunes 11 for track and volume control. Ideally for not just sending but also receiving track and volume input.
And whats the absolute BEST solution for each platform. I understand running iTunes 10.7 or 11 sandboxed or on another machine may also be an option.
So.. lets look at things like resource usage Vs usability...
For me CAD (CD Art Display) has always been helpful especially combined with raindrop even tho it doesn't have flow options for the most part on 99% of themes. It still makes my library pop.
Looks like there are 3 options for Mac
    Steel Sky (SteelSkies)
    Everplay
    CoverStream
Its worth noting Everplay has Last.FM support. Not sure if that can be integrated into iTunes 11 somehow.
For windows the only thing i could find remotely like coverflow is a widget called XDeskCover
    To mods:
Please stop deleting my posts. If you want to take the time to completely remove a feature from a program atleast let us explore some alternatives so we can continue actually using apple products.

another method suggested in these forums in the post "session manager stopped working with firefox 3" by Charles Anderson works for me and allows me to use my little X.
go to options -> General tab
under startup/when firefox starts -> change to something other than "show my windows and tabs from last time".
I've had this on show my homepage previous and it got changed somewhere and I think it was from an update or addon which is why a few others are having the same issue.

  • Solution for intermittent use of a single Adobe product?

I may be a unique case, because I do not want or really need all of the products that Adobe provides my for $30/month. Here is my dilemma:
I use Adobe illustrator infrequently, sometimes intensively for a month or so, but then I will not use it for the better part of a year. This is how I use the application.
So, I'm feel that being financially penalized for continuing to use Illustrator, since I pay for it every single month of my life, but use it infrequently. For example, if I use the program 20 times in 10 years (which is about how I do use it), then I am paying (according to the current student deal which I am sure will change in the coming 10 years time), $3600.00 over the course of 10 years to use the program 20 times. That works out to $180.00 per use.
Obviously I am not in good conscience able to renew my subscription with Adobe, and would have ended it earlier were it not for the severe financial penalty Adobe imposes on users for breaking a subscription contract before its official expiration.
Before I go, I just wonder if Adobe has any care for users such as myself. I know one unsatisfactory response already: I can by the full version, not get incremental updates, and will need to pay full price for each major upgrade. That's a bad deal too. How can a infrequent user of a single Adobe product (Illustrator) use the application for a reasonable amount of money? I don't need every Adobe product under the sun nor do I like the fact that somewhere in Adobe's hierarchy they think that is some kind of advantage to users. To me, that is product bloat, bordering on spam marketing. If I want a sip of water, I have to drink from the fire hydrant. This is so bone-headed.
I suppose, overall, I will advise my students to use what software the company they work for uses. But as far as a personal graphics package for independent work, I cannot recommend Adobe products anymore because of this pricing scheme, which really does penalize people who only use a product one in a while. But before I go, am I missing something? Is my assessment of this dilemma on target? I know I can no longer afford Adobe products, but I also want to advise my students in a way that is fair to them. Currently I am working on a module that shows all of the vector mapping graphics programs and breaks them down according to their feature set and cost for the user.
I've been using Adobe Illustrator for over two decades, and I will be sad to not have it available to me in the future, but this new business model and pricing structure no longer makes sense for me. Yes, considering the time and energy I've put into the program this is an emotional decision, but ending my relationship with Adobe is the healthy choice. It's like walking away from an abusive relationship of the passive-agressive variety. Adobe, what a drag!

On the face of it, the $30 for every monthly use seems like it might be a good solution for intermittent users. But, as a designers, I think many of us might like to take a brief look at an idea (sometimes just for the fun of it.) And so, if during one month I want to take a peek at some of my work with no real intention of doing any work, I would need to pay $30 to look at my own work. This kind of situation creates a kind of "double bind" for me. It's an uneasy feeling, having a kind of oppressive effect on the creative flow of ideas. Consider this case scenario: "I think I can improve that logo I did last summer. I wonder what this change would look like?" Well, to find out that will be $30.00. For me, that's an uncomfortable position. Again, thanks for the thoughtful reply.

  • Make your own Fax Server with Automator! (Pagesender solution for Mavericks)

I have been scouring these discussion boards for some time now looking for a suitable substitute to PageSender, an awesome fax solution for the Mac from SmileOnMyMac LLC, which for some inexplicable reason stopped development and updates after OS 10.6.8. The result is that many small business office users who still rely on fax (and yes...no matter what they tell you, most of the business world DOES still use fax because it's legally binding and more secure than email for the transmission of legal documents or healthcare records, and does not rely on database integration accross different systems, which is sadly but very realistically still a long ways off), and no longer have a way to integrate faxes into a paperless or digital workflow office system.
I suspect like many folks who receive faxes, those who used PageSender, used a very powerful feature to forward faxes by email, thereby turning your Mac into a Fax server that could distribute your faxes to other workstations and staff throughout the business via email. Presumably, if you have your own email server (Exchange, Kerio, AppleMail server, PostFix enabler etc.) you could distribute faxes on your own internal network, securely behind a firewall, and effectively create a digitial/paperless workflow for your faxes.
Even if you have a USB modem or multifunction printer that allows you to recieve a Fax to your desktop (Apple's internal fax via printer preferences, and some HP models like the HP MFP 127fw) for example will allow you to recieve a Fax to a desktop folder or forward to a single email address. But the former is of limited functionaliy and the later only lets you send to an email address out over the internet with a registered public domain, which means you give up all control of privacy and means you can't process it through a private mail server to create a digital workflow for your office...
    ...Until now!!!
I am happy to report that I have finally discovered a very easy and useable feature that will save a lot of time, money, and headaches for those looking to create a digital workflow and fax server system for a small office system. (I don't think there is any limit to scale here, but I suspect offices with more than 10 employees probably have a BizHub, or HP MFP/digital sender that can create the same process directly from the printer, but of course these come with a price tag of $2000 and up...).
To accomplish this however, you will need some basic requirements which are as follows:
    1) A USB modem from either US Robotics or Zoom Modem. These are readily available from Amazon, MacMall or any number of other online vendors and work very well and seemlessly with all Macs running OSX right up through Mavericks
    OR
A Multifunction printer that is capable of receiving faxes to a desktop Mac like the HP 127 fw. Other models exist from other manufacturers as well, but you will have to do a bit of research and probably check with the vendor or user manual directly to confirm that Fax to desktop is supported for Mac and OS 10.9.
    2) A dedicated Mail Server (MSFT Exchange, Kerio, MacOSX server with mail server enabled, or PostFix enalber or MailServe from Cutedge Systems)
You will need to set up an email account on your server that is the parent for all incoming faxes from which the faxes will be sent out as part of your digital workflow. This is beyond the scope of this discussion but if you've come this far and you're still reading, you probably know  how to do this already. I recommend setting this up as a POP account, not IMAP. This way, the attatchments (your faxes) will always remain on your server as a back up, until you delete them from the server.
    3) Now simply go to System preferences and select "Printers and Scanners". Select either the Fax printer for your multifunction printer, or add a fax printer/reviever using the + button and select "Fax" if you are using a USB modem. You must have the USB modem attatched to the computer in order to use the built-in Apple Fax feature for the latter option.
    4) Now click on the receive options. Select "Recieve faxes to this computer" and set your ring answer settings. Check "Save to" and select the designated folder (either Faxes or Shared Faxes on your computer) or create a new folder. Depending on the volume of faxes, and your back up systems, you may want to designate a separate folder on a separate drive, exclusively for your Faxes. This is where all your faxes will be stored.
    5) Now launch "Automator" in your applications folder and create a new workflow. You will be presented with several options. Select "Folder Action".
    6) At the top right of the window space you will see "Folder Action receives files and folders added to" . Select the Fax folder you created in step 4.
7)On the left hand side of the "Actions" menu select "Mail"
    8) From the list of actions select "New Mail Message" this will take the latest Fax added to your Fax folder and attach it as a PDF to a new outgoing mail. In the "TO" address put the email address that belongs to the parent account your created for the Faxes on your mail server eg. [email protected].  In the subject field you can put "Fax Workflow" or any other generic subject that will identify to all reciptients that this is an email that contains a Fax/PDF attatchment.
Under "account" use the SMTP account you set up on your mail server to handle the routing of internal emails. In most cases, this will be the same as the parent account created above. (Effectively, this account is sending and receiving emails to itself).
    9) From the list of actions, select "Send outgoing messages".
    10) Save the Automator workflow with a name like "FaxDistribution" or "FaxFlow".
    11) Go back to the Fax folder you created in step 4. Right click or option click on the folder and scroll down the options menu and select "Folder Actions Setup". You will see a list of scripts including the Automator workflow you just created. Choose it.
That's it!! From now on, when you get a fax, it will get dumped into the designated fax folder, and this will automatically trigger the workflow to atttach and send it as an email to anyone in your office that is set up to receive emails with the "faxserver" address. You now have a paperless fax digital workflow server system for distributing your faxes digitally to anyone in your office who needs to review your faxes. Good luck!

Thank you for this interesting posting.

  • Best solution for customers to edit InDesign files within a browser????

I have done a lot of research of some of the companies out there now that do this (one2edit, wealledit, chilli publishing, etc.) and none are really what we are looking for.  To begin, we are a publishing company that produces custom academic planning calendars....which includes formatting rules/regulations for schools that will be included with a calendar.  Basically, we currently export an RTF each year and the school will edit that RTF file.  We then use some custom scripts to import back into InDesign.  Now, if they do this correct (use our styles in the file, etc)...typically, this works pretty well.  However, out of 2000+ schools, probably only 60-70% do this right....which leads many more hours of formatting, etc.  We also post a PDF proof online before we send the files to print and the school has an opportunity at that time to make changes, edits, etc. to the rules and regulations section.  Currently, they simply tell us what they want changed, added, etc and we do that for them.
    Our goal here:
We would like the schools to be able to make their changes in the begining of each year as well as at proof time live in the InDesign document via a browser.  One company that is similar to this is WeAllEdit.  There are some issues with how they update the info live (to see page flow), etc. and that is a huge feature we need.  We would like the admin at the school to make whatever edits they have each year or at proof time in a browser that looks EXACTLY like the InDesign document we have created for them.  This will include current page flow, paragraph styles, custom tabs (mainly text).  If they are to make a change in the browser that affects page flow - i.e. pushes something to a new page or pulls something from the next page, we want to be visible to the customer so they can see exactly how the flow of the document is and how it will print.
    Solutions:??
    - Again, WeAllEdit seems to be the closest to what we are looking for (for a reference point), but, still has issues with what we are looking for.
    - Do we investigate purchasing a InDesign server license and develop/design our own interface for this?
    - Is .XML an option?  You can currently export an XML file with tagged text.  Is this something that can be translated into an online feature with a good designer?
    - other suggestions??
Sorry for the lengthy post, just wanted to be very specific as to what we do and what we are looking for.  ANY help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

I am faced with the same problem today. Did you ever work out a solution for this?

  • Need solution for dynamic pick lists in Crystal Reports

Does anyone have a good solution for creating a dynamic pick list for a Crystal Report that is based off of a BW Query without having to use a BW user input variable? In many cases it is not practical to use a BW variable to generate a dynamic pick list due to the high number of possible member values and the highly dynamic nature of the particular characteristic (customers, materials, etc.).  In my understanding the LOV Server is not an option when dealing with SAP BW.  Anyone else running into this issue with Crystal and SAP BW?

    Hi Mike,
we once solved this by creating LOVs in BusinessView Manager. I am not sure if you can use the BW Publisher in this scenario as we did not use it. We published the reports directly to the BOE server for some reasons.
Creating a LOV in BusinessView manager is really easy. You can create cascading prompts, shedule refreshing of the lists, ...
By using the cascading prompt feature you can make prompts like this:
First enter the customer number (or pick it from a list) and then the second list, which holds the materials only has shows the ones which had been purchased by that customer. I think this is what you are looking for.
You should give it a try!

  • Annoture - Metadata Bridging Solution for Aperture and iView

    Aperture and iView users:
I just released Annoture, a metadata bridging solution for Aperture and iView MediaPro! With Annoture, you’re just a click away from sharing metadata between these two popular image management and cataloguing applications. Spend more time working with your decisive moments than worrying about double-entry and incomplete metadata!
Annoture lets you transfer annotations from iView MediaPro catalogs to Aperture projects and albums and back. This two-way transfer of IPTC and metadata information means you are not tied to any one application for your image management and workflow needs. Annoture also features a modular interface that can be extended to support additional applications in the future.
    http://www.tow.com/software/annoture/
Users of Aperture and iView can download a fully-functional version of Annoture. The unregistered version will occasionally display a reminder to register, and all images processed in Aperture by Annoture will have a custom “Annotated with Annoture!” tag added. You can remove these items with the full version after purchasing and entering your license code.
    Enjoy!

Congratulations on getting this working and available so quickly! I bet many late nights went into this
It's definitely providing some motivation for me to learn more Applescript...

  • Premiere CS5 has 'roundtrip' solution for Protools - not Audition

Premiere CS5 has a 'roundtrip' solution for Protools. Audition was not mentioned. I read this in a NAB coverage, but it's hard to find exact information on this on Adobe's own website: it appears they want you to watch video after video to learn the new features, but I don't - I want to skim some text as it is really fast, maybe even do a quick search!
I understand Adobe needs to support the industry leading (after all) audio editing environment. However they DO have a gem in their own portifolio called "Audition", and it's kind of disapponting if this long awaited feature isn't implemented now for their own app as well. Soundbooth have been supported from the start - I / we've been waiting for this to be implemented for years for the much better and deeper Audition.
    Where is A4 anyway?

    permanentrecordstudios wrote:
Seriously, where is AA4?  It seems Adobe has gotten in way over their heads with too many products and can't afford the time to invest in what they already have.
Audition 4 is being worked on - a matter of public knowledge. You have to bear in mind that the Audition development team is the same as the Soundbooth one, so with two products to work on, it will inevitably be longer between releases for both of them.

  • What is the best & cheap backup solution for a macpro laptop?

What is the best & cheap backup solution for a macpro laptop? easy & simple to use

    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components: 1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences; and, 2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    SuperDuper!
    Synk Pro
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.
