Two spinning balls on start up?

Was running yash and lost power.  Tried to reboot and now, after I sign in using password, I get the spinning wheel next to my name in the log in screen AND the spinning beach ball..
I notice that during yash is running there is a small red - under the HD icon.
Need some help here.

Sorry..Yasu
Running 10.8.1..
I am able to log into guest account..
I did what I think is all the trouble shooting..
Disconnect all wired peripherals reboot still problem.
Boot in safe mode same issue spinning beach balls
Reset the NVRAM / PRAM
Disk Utility form my MT Lion boot stick . Ran Disk and Permissions repair still spinning balls.
I could reboot from my clone and or nuke and pave..I have a number of back ups from yesterday
But I think that there may be an issue with my admin user account, as it is not recognizing me.  I was thinking that if I log in as a guest open permissions reset to me then try the log in it might just work.
I think yasu locked me out when the power went out as it was not finished…

"Can't get Macbook past spinning ball at startup. PLEASE HELP"
Older mac book with (??  10.5....  ??) Froze up. Force Quit "Kindle", "Sketch up" and "Safari". Have tried to use safe boot but after 5 min. of holding shift key the SBOD (Spinning Beachball Of Death) was still spinning away. Tried to load Mountain lion by means of disc---Didnt have original disc for this macbook; inherited it from deceased family member 2 yrs ago--- but couldn't get past SBOD there either. I am willing to erase all on mac book in order to get it up and running again since all my vital files are in my Mac (desktop) and primary use of macbook tends to be internet use.

You could try installing Snow Leopard on the Macbook. Installation DVD is available from Apple:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Are you sure the MB meets the requirements for Mountain Lion?

  • Spinning ball during audio enoding

I have just finished an iMovie, the length is about 62 minutes, I have set the preferences in IDVd to 'best quality', when I try to burn a DVD every step proceeds ok untill the audio encoding and and then I just get the spinning beach ball. is something wrong, I have about a half dozen songs from my iTunes library for sound tracts (mp3). I have forced the app to quit when I see the spinning ball, then started the process over, should I just try and wait it out, if so how long? Thanks in advance to anyone who knows more about this subject that I. Thanks, Lynn
p.s. I have gotten the same results with my dual IMac 20 in screen and with my Mac book (both running 10.4.8)

    Welcome Lynn
...should I just try and wait it out, if so how long?
Yes. Wait it out. And if it still fails to work after 48 hours then try burning your itunes music to a CD first... and then import the audio in aiff format.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302988
Note: there is an issue sometimes with iTunes Music Store purchased song/s not working correctly, but this is easily fixed by burning the purchased tune to an audio CD then reimporting ...iDVD has to convert any audio to the aiff format when it's encoding. This takes a long time if the audio isn't already in aiff format.

  • Help --- Finder Spinning Ball of Death Mavericks not starting

get the spinning ball of death when I select finder from the desktop or select anything for that matter.
I have tried reinstalling Mavericks, after the install I get a popup asking me to install java, regardless of the option I select either not now or install the SPOD comes up.
I then go into safe mode and downloaded java and installed it, then rebooted normal mode, same problem SPOD when you select anything.
I have created another account and that works fine, but not my normal account. Initially I thought it might be something to do with chrome, so I uninstalled that.
In addition I have removed any startup items I had against the user ID in system preferences. I have also switched off spotlight trying to build indexes.
I know my system is ok when I get the adobe update icon on my top menu bar. The boot up process simply doesn’t get to that stage.
Below is the boot log. I would be really grateful for any suggestions. I have tried installing from the app store 3 times now.

The startup drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault. Everything else is completely irrelevant.
Back up all data on the drive immediately if you don't already have a current backup. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

I am getting a spinning ball on my G5 with tiger and a slow down and then it seems to return to normal operation. I also have had three acomdata external harddrives fail after sometimes a single startup within the last day. They will not even spinup. Two other externals work just fine.

At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.
    Any change?
See how fast Pageouts build up again.

  • Start up spinning ball....

moved to a new office space.
sweet little cabin/ shack. used as a recording studio at one time...
you'd think the power would be clean, but not so. I could hear a fan in the window vary slightly in power so....( even though mac was working fine) I got a high quality voltage stabilizer/back up device, just in case. it shows (on digital readout) 120-118 volts going in...fluctuation...
plugged into device Mac boots up, apple on screen, (long sausage-like display begins to fill in with gray but stops) fades off, spinning ball......
    gulp.
Tried booting up in the same way it was before installing stabilizer/ back up, the way it worked before....same spinning ball
    gulp.

Always raise the question of PRAM battery condition when I hear it.  If the machine was off mains power for any appreciable time and the PRAM battery was not particularly new (three or four years old or older) then it may now be marginal enough that the CPU is reading garbage data from it.
However, that being said, the first thing to do is try a safe boot by holding the shift key down at power up.  The fact that you are getting to the progress gear on the gray screen says that the computer has found a bootable volume and is trying to load the system but it is hanging at some point.  A safe boot may help in that first off, it attempts a directory repair and then starts loading MacOS.
The second thing to try is the PRAM reset, accomplished by holding down the cmd-option-P-R key combination at boot until you hear the second boot tone (chime).  This may also temporarily help in a weak PRAM battery situation.
A third, less likely strategy would be to do a PMU or SMU reset of the machine, which is usually more useful in non-start situations which do not get to the point of looking at the boot volume.
PRAM batteries come in two flavors and locations for G5 towers.  The 3.6 volt half-AA battery is found in all machines except the last variant which was introduced in late 2005 and is located in the PCI card area of the logic board.  The last machines use the coin shaped 3 volt CR2032 battery and place it in the area of the RAM modules.  You can check battery voltages, which need to be done in-circuit with mains power disconnected, using a good high impedance digital volt meter, with batteries showing a voltage lower than 90 percent of nominal needing replacement for sure.
Picture of 3.6 volt batteries and a AA battery for reference:
    Picture of the coin cell:
The coin cells are readily available in a lot of places for about two bucks.  The half-AA cells not so readily available.  Radio Shack usually has a Tadiran battery for about $20, or you can get them on the web for about a quarter of that plus shipping.
A link to a SAFT battery:
    http://www.atbatt.com/product/3441.asp
A link to a Tadiran battery:
    http://www.atbatt.com/product/21511.asp
Or you can look at the OWC site for their offering.  (Of course, my caveat about OWC is there's so much neat stuff on their website that it's hard to resist adding other stuff to the order.)
If these things don't get you going, you can also try a "verbose boot" by holding down the cmd-V key at boot until you (with any luck) see a black dumb Unix console display with progress information on what the system is doing.  That is useful to tell you at least where things are hanging.

You have SCADS of extensions and the things running. McAfee, Intego, Orbicule, CleanMyMac, and others I've not ever even heard of. My first recommendation would be to remove all of these and see if things improve.

  • Spinning Ball in iTunes Start up

Every time that I open my iTunes I get the spinning ball and it locks up iTunes and I have to shut down my computer to start over.I read a post that said to go into utilities and post what is happening.  This happens no matter what device I plug in to sync in iTunes.
I have over 30 of these messages in the utilities......If you could please help that would be great!

    Dear Greg:
I don't have an answer, but in the same boat. Beach Balls and Beach Balls and more Beach Balls.
iTunes 11 seems to be bigger, fatter and communicating more with the big Apple in the Cloud.
    A god awful mess.
Maps and now iTunes. Apple is batting a 100%

Do you have Parallels installed by any chance?  There is a known problem that causes symptoms similar to this.  You do not need to actually be running Parallels at the time and nothing in ActivityMonitor would point to Parallels.  An update corrects the problem:

  • Spinning ball when safari starts up

    MacBook Pro 15", Late 2011
    Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)
I can't seem to get Safari to open properly. I get the spinning ball of death. Is there a startup  reset sequence I can use to reset the cache or even bring safari up in a SAFE MODE?

    Frank ..
    Check the startup disk ...
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If DU reports errors, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you can access the built-in utilities to repair the disk using OS X Recovery .

  • I have a word document that keeps stalling with the spinning ball sign - how can I stop this?

Have a 2009 Macbook Air. Never given me any trouble before. But I am working on a long word document (docx) - 200 pages of text - and after 5 minutes of working on it it starts to stall and the spinning ball comes up every time I try to type or edit. I have tried resaving it as a doc. I have transferred it to my main IMac where the same problem occurs. No other word documents are doing this. This document is a novel, three years in the making, which is due to go off to publishers in a few weeks time so I am rather worried that it is going to be unrescuable. any suggestions?
I have a time machine and so on so it is all backed up, but i want to be able to work on it!
    Please help!?

    Try this.
Open the document and select and copy a few pages, say ten pages.
Open a new blank document and paste the pages you copied into that.
Save it with a new name.
Work on those new pages to see if the problem has disappeared.
If this helps, continue breaking up the large file in to smaller chunks and working on them
You can of course later reverse the process and merge the files into one new one.
This suggestion is based on my experiences with large Word files. Breaking it up in to smaller chunks does two things. First, if there is any corruption in the old file, the new copies might escape that. Second, the Mac is faster handling the smaller chunks.

  • TextEdit problems: causes spinning ball/freezes, can't make it default app

I'm having some serious problems with, of all things, TextEdit. On an iMac running 10.4.11 with TextEdit v. 1.4 (the standard version for Tiger), I've been having the following two major issues:
    1. About once per day, or at least once every two days, for absolutely no perceivable reason, while typing in TextEdit, I get the "spinning beach ball"; the same pattern happens every time: I wait about 6 minutes for the beach ball to stop spinning, then I try to "save" my open document; this causes another six-minute spin/wait, after which it saves. Then I try to "Quit" Textedit, and after another six-minute spin, it finally quits. Then, any successive action on my part -- clicking an application icon in the dock, or doing command-option-escape to force quit things, or basically anything at all, causes the spinning ball to return, and this time it will not go away. I've waited as long as two hours, and it just keeps spinning. Command-option-escape does nothing -- no response. Nor does command-period, or anything I could think of. The only way out of the freeze is to press the power button and turn off the computer. Terrible!
This ONLY happens when I am working in TextEdit -- no other application causes the problem. And it only happens when I have an unsaved TextEdit document topmost on the screen. It has happened at least 30 times now, consistently, so it's not a one-time glitch. It has even happened when TextEdit was the ONLY application running -- so it couldn't be another application causing the problem. I had thought that "Classic" was causing the problem, because I often have Classic running to use a legacy OS9 application, but even when I restarted the computer and did not ever launch Classic, I still got the TextEdit-freeze problem.
    2. None of my TextEdit documents have TextEdit as their default launch application. Yes, I know about single-clicking the file, pressing "command-I" and in the Info box changing the "Open With" application to "TextEdit," and also then clicking on "change all" so that all similar files are opened with the same application. When I attempt this, it apparently makes the change, but in fact nothing happens: even after making the change, double-clicking the files does not launch TextEdit. In fact, it launches nothing at all, because when I check command-I again, the launch application has reverted to either "None", or to something mysterious called "ams1108.html", which not only is not an application, but it doesn't even exist on my computer (I searched for it).
HOWEVER, if TextEdit is already running, then when I double-click on any of my text documents, they will then open in TextEdit. But if TextEdit is not currently running, they won't open in it.
This applies to any file that has a visible or hidden "txt" or "rtf" or other normal TextEdit-compatible extension. Basically, any text file.
What is going on? I thought TextEdit was the most stable, most reliable application in all of Apple-dom. And I've been using it for years and years, but this problem has only recently started in the past couple months. I have no memory of making any changes to my computer that could have precipitated the change. Also: are these two problems related to each other?
I really don't know what to do. Any suggestions for fixing this problem would be appreciated. (And no, I don't have the original 10.4 install disks, so I can't re-install TextEdit, unless it can be downloaded somewhere). Thanks.

OK, Carolyn, I wrote down all my prefs (glad I did), trashed the prefs file, restarted, relaunched TextEdit, reset all my preferences to my liking (which had reverted to default settings), quit TextEdit. Then I tried double-clicking some text files -- and the same problem (#2 above) persists. None of my TextEdit or text files have TextEdit as the default launch application -- they're still all either "None" or "ams1108.html". And, as before, if I try to change it to "TextEdit" in the file's info box, then click on "change all," it does not work: not only does it not change all the text files to be TextEdit, but clicking "change all" will cause the file in question to revert to "None" or "ams1108.html". However, if I only change the default app for that one file to TextEdit, and don't click "change all," then it will stick -- for now at least. (Though I wouldn't be surprised if after a restart they all changed back to "None.")
The short assessment is: trashing the prefs did NOT fix problem #2 above. It may or may not have fixed problem #1 -- hard to tell immediately, since the only way to find out is the use TextEdit for two days.
So, setting aside problem #1 for now: any suggestions for fixing problem #2 (default app can't be changed to TextEdit by clicking "change all")? I have thousands and thousands of TextEdit files I use, so changing them all manually one-by-one isn't feasible. Thanks.

  • New IMAC slowing down with spinning ball

I've had my MAC for about 3 weeks (I switched from a PC). Today it started slowing down. First whe n I tried to print something and then when I was in Excel (Office for MAC 2004). Both times it didn't do anything for a minute and then the clorful spinning ball thing appeared. About a minute later it finished what I was doing (saving a template file).
I looked at the system memory and I have 2GB of RAM with an OK status. I have two printers - one USB attached to my MAC and the other on another computer (Windows) that I am sharing. This was not a problem before, so I don't expect this to be the issue, but I figured I'd mention it anyway.
    I haven't bought virus software yet - perhaps I have a virus?
Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

Macs don't get viruses, so you can rule that out. Do you have any shared drives or network connections? Something there could be slowing things down. If you do have some connections, try disconnecting them and see if that speeds up your access. When was the last time you rebooted the machine? You could always try that.
There is a utility in applications\utilities called "Activity Monitor". You could look there to see if anything is hogging the memory or processor. Have you installed anything recently?

  • Microsoft Office 2008 - spinning balls

Our office has come across an issue in the last few months that has us stymied. I'm hoping someone here may be able to offer assistance or direction. Sorry but the explanation is a bit lengthy...
Last summer, our office updated all of our machines to OS 10.7. We're running on iMacs that are about 4 years old now, and out of AppleCare. When we made the upgrades, there was a decision to not upgrade the version of Microsoft Office we were running (2008) since it would have meant an increase in the cost of the upgrades, and training time to get the staff up & running again. There was nothing we could find at the time that would indicate we'd have any issues sticking with Office 2008 in the new OS.
Shortly after the updates were run, two of our staff of 20+ started noticing problems with delays when opening Word documents from our XServe file server. When they used the Open menu and maneuvered through our file hierarchy, to chose a document, they would notice a spinning ball pop up for upwards of 15-30 seconds (I know it doesn't sound like much, but these are busy assistants, and typically open 50+ documents a day, so it adds up). Sometimes the ball would stick around for a minute or more. If they were trying to jump through multiple folders & sub-folders to locate where the documents were on the server, they'd sometimes encounter this behaviour in each sub-folder they drilled into.
To date we've tried everything we can think of... increased the RAM in those machines; updated the OS; updated Office; updated the RAM in the server hosting the information; uninstalled & reinstalled Office from the original CD; tested using a fresh account, with none of the other preferences; changed their network connection from wired to robust wireless; had them try opening files only directly through the Finder; installed & ran the Trial version of Office 2011...    Nothing has fixed the issue.
We're all at a loss as to what to try next. I'm wondering if anyone has seen this issue, if they've resolved it, or if anyone has any suggestions for what to try next. We have only the two staff members experiencing the problem, but since they're such high producing assistants, we're trying to resolve the issue. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Not the area to ask but...
    A. backup
    B. repair your drive from another hard drive also running latest OS X.
Sounds like your disk file system and directory are problem (the hard drive itself could be failing or have failed blocks too).
