Ubuntu-like GNOME experience [not Ayatana Project] - official thread

After packaging most of Ayatana stuff, i started to package other GUI things, like icons, themes from Ubuntu.
Screenshots:
my current desktop - still needs a lot of work
Here are already packaged things:
light-themes-bzr: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=38555
ubuntu-mono-bzr: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=38554
dropbox-ubuntu-mono-dark: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=38589
dropbox-ubuntu-mono-light: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=38590
parcellite-ubuntu-mono-icon: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=38590
this three must be installed with -f option to resolve file conflicts. i dont know how can i do this properly other way.
empathy-theme-ubuntu-adium: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=38596
i have some corruption with it, dont know why
But there will be lot more. You can check out newest informations about my packages on twitter @dinth1906.

I'm using this PKGBUILD (with the patch in the same folder) and it works like a charm.

BNN, even though I understand what KT is saying, your thought resonates with mine. When it comes to building and maintaining my website, I see myself more as a photographer than as a web designer. Hence, even though Apple may not be actively developing (and we are guessing on this one, arent we) iWeb, the existing functionality should do plenty of good to me for next couple years at least.
That said, they released a point update a few days back and with the whole cloud thing building momentum and mobile me going for free, why would Apple want to pull the plug on such a fantastic product?

  • Ubuntu-like fonts in the system

    Hello everyone!
I've recently installed and setup Arch and am already loving it with all the customization it can offer. The only thing I currently don't like is fonts. I've been using Ubuntu in the last 3 years approximately and admit it, got used to it pretty much. Google search results for example look kinda ugly for me now. I've read a lot of similar threads here, but didn't really find an answer. Sure, applying a good fontconfig helped a bit and fonts do look better, but it's still not really what I exactly would like to have.
    My specs:
Old laptop: 1366x768 resolution (15.6"), Radeon proprietary drivers, Ubuntu 13.10 (yeah, had bad experience with updating and just didn't get to it, shame on me!), no extra font setup.
New laptop: 1920x1080 resolution (15.6"), Intel i915 driver, Gnome 3.14, default example fontconfig from Wiki page (this made it look a bit better). I also installed ttf-ubuntu-font-family, to no avail.
Some other information: In gnome-tweak-tool I set font scaling factor to 1.1, this also made stuff a bit better. I use Firefox and had to set layout.css.devPixelsPerPx to 1.3 to have bigger overall look. It's the same in Ubuntu with Firefox, text is small, but this "tweak" fixes it, so it's not a real problem. It's good in Win8.1 by default though.
Based on what I read this is not just a one-sider problem I think, I mean DPI, resolution, font rendering, the actual font, scaling, etc. might too play a role in here. Since I have no fonts, DPI and similar stuff experience, I don't even no where to start looking into this. What could be the problem? If you need any more information, please ask.
    Thanks in advance!

    resolution: 120x120 dots per inch
Read the Infinality threads, for tons of info.
Thanks for the suggestion! Now playing with this, found some interesting stuff. By default, even if I set DisplaySize to correct ones in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/90-monitor.conf, it shows 96 dpi and some weird 508x286 mms if started with GDM (both in Gnome and XFCE4). Now if I start gnome(/xfce4)-session in .xinitrc and use startx, it reads 142 fine in XFCE4, but not in Gnome. Xft.dpi setting also seem to be totally ignored by Gnome, but not in XFCE4 if I don't use custom setting.
Edit: Same applies for awesome, if started from GDM, it totally ignores my settings.

  • Trying to make GNOME 3 a bit like GNOME 2

Hello guys. I'm a GNOME fanatic but I must admit that GNOME 3 has concerned me. At first I didn't like it at all. Then I got used to it a little and after that I reminded myself that even with GNOME 2 I certainly did NOT used any of the default theme/features etc. So I need to give some time to GNOME 3 for the devs to make mods, themes etc.
Right now 3 things concern me:
    1. I'm using Cairo Dock but I found out that I cannot drag and drop apps from the Activities menu to the dock. Any ideas how to do this? (I'm really embarassed to admit it, but after 4 years on Linux I still don't know another way to add apps to cairo dock :-/ )
    2. Is there anyway to make the system tray that appears on the down-right corner move up like GNOME 2 used to?
    3. At last, are there any widgets for the bar? I like the upper bar full or else I find it boring and useless.
    Thanks in advance!

Sloshy wrote:What I do is I just use the built-in dock that comes with GNOME 3 on the Activities overlay. If I press the Activities Key (Windows/Super/Meta/whatever) and move my mouse to the left, it's just like a regular dock. It supports favorites of course, right-clicking, and in the future it'll get zeitgeist jumplist support! To switch apps I just use Alt+Tab and Alt+` (or whatever key's above Tab for you; it's relative). I don't even need a dock anymore, and this behavior becomes second-nature really quickly. I don't know how to add an application to cairo-dock, but I think the devs will make a workaround for it eventually. Until then, try it without a dock and see if you can get used to it
I have applications that do NOT work properly with Mutter/gnome-Shell. VMware guests that are hardware accelerated perform badly. Autodesk Maya doesn't work properly... Mutter is much slower than compiz, and is not easily tweakable without knowledge of javascript and CSS . - that is brutal!
I have over 200 gestures that i use on my desktop (easystroke), little to almost none of which are transferable to Gnome-Shell. Compiz is a much better way to go for tablet use. I don't require remembering any hotkeys, at all - for any purpose on my desktop - why would i want to learn all of gnome-shell's??? I wouldn't, that's a waste of my time and my workflow is much faster. I only use the keyboard to type text, or for hotkeys in applications that i use, where it makes sense too.
I can add/remove workspaces WITHOUT leaving my even desktop in cairo-dock. (in fact i can do anything gnome-shell does without leaving my desktop). to switch to open applications i draw a circle on the screen - it enables the scale plugin in compiz ~ the scale plugin in GnomeShell is inferior. Scale in compiz can focus on an application (handy when you have many applications open, it zooms in on the app without switching to it - when you have a dozen apps open it's awesome), i can also close applications in scale by using a right-click. Not only that but compiz' scale plugin will show me all applications relative to their own workspace. (and it is customizable).
Compiz also performs as a tiling window manager - gnome-shell's new "snap plugin" - is in compiz, and has been for a quite while. Not only that compiz' is better. it has more functionality and is again - totally customizable! going back to the tiling aspect - if i have 2 windows open that i would like to have each snap to the sides / splitting them across the desktop - i draw a "box" on my screen. not only that, but this works with 4 applications open too.
You don't need a dock, because gnome-shell has it's own way of doing things - i PREFER a dock, anytime i am required to leave my desktop to achieve something, whether it is seraching for a file, or looking/opening an appliction -  i consider that to be bad UI design...and trying to compare "activities" to cairo-dock is laughable. activities is a somewhat feature-less attempt at replacing other opensource projects that already exist and are much better....and yes, i am sure Cairo-dock will be fixed.

  • Boot Camp 3.0 and Windows 7 64-bit - My experiences/notes

I just installed Boot Camp 3.0 from the Snow Leopard DVD onto my MacBook Pro 17 (Mid 09) which is running Windows 7 64bit RTM and had Boot Camp 2.1 previously installed on it.
    My experiences/notes:
    1. The Boot Camp 3.0 installation automatically removed the Boot Camp 2.1 drivers that it was going to update and then installed the newer 3.0 ones
    2. You still can only use the GeForce 9600M GT graphics chipset, i.e. only the 9600M GT shows to windows and appears in the device manager
    3. Deferred Procedure Calls (DPC) Latency issues still exist although it doesn't seem like you need to run the Bootcamp.exe on CPU 0 affinity only (Bootcamp.exe = the updated/Boot Camp 3.0 version of KbdMgr.exe)
    4. You still can't fully dim the keyboard backlight with the F5 key
    5. I manually updated the 'important' drivers to the very newest one, i.e.
5a. Latest Nvidia driver for GeForce 9600M GT => 186.81notebook_win7_winvista_64bit_internationalwhql.exe
5b. Latest WLAN chip driver => Broadcom (4322AG chipset) Wireless LAN Driver for Microsoft Windows Vista 5.10.91.8 (14 May 2009) = sp43743.exe
5c. Lateset Realtek High Definition Audio Codec => VistaWin7R231.zip
    6. Although I still have bad DPC latency, I haven't yet noticed any audio/video lag/drop-outs/screeches etc.
Best of luck to you all and I hope this helps someone, Dingle7

Here are the links for the latest 'important' drivers:

NOTE: You will need to manually update the drivers in the windows device manager (select 4322AG chipset) because the installer doesn't overwrite the old drivers from Boot Camp

  • "Could not find project's extension manifest file."

I am trying to load the Illustrator SDK sample FreeGridUI.  In the documentation supplied by adobe, it says:
    1. In the IDE, choose File > Import > Flash Builder > Flash Builder Project.
    2. Select "Project folder" and browse to SDK_root\samplecode\FreeGridUI.
    3. Click Finish to import the project.
    4. Build the project.
When I do that I get an error message that says:
"Could not find project's extension manifest file. Make sure the manifest exists at .staged-extension/CSXS/manifest.xml."
But as you can see from the attached screen shot, the manifest is in that exact location.
Also when I edit the manifest in the "bundle manifest editor" and then close the manifest tab, is asks me if I want to save the manifest.  When I choose yes and re-open the manifest... none of my changes have been saved.
    Anybody got any ideas?
    -Bill

    Okay,
I feel stupid, but I also feel like adobe should feel stupid too.  Turns out I missed the "." at the beginning of the ".staged-extension" path.  But adobe put that folder in their sample without the "." in front.  So much for a "working sample."  Anyway, I dropped into terminal and did a "mv staged-exnestion .staged-extension" and now all is well.  Hope that helps someone.  Sorry for crying wolf.

  • FCP X does not recognize projects and events on USB drive after a time machine restore of the MBP macintosh disk

FCP X does not recognize projects and events on USB drive after a time machine restore of the MBP macintosh disk.
I upgraded from an i5 to an i7 15" MBP and restored my files using my time machine backup. All seemed to go ok, except I had to use the migration assistant because on the initial boot the MAC didn't recognize the backup database on the USB device. MAybe this is a hint.
Since when I start FCPX it too cannot finnd the project or event directories.
Before my upgrade, I had a choice of files either on the Macintosh disk or the 2TB USB disk.
Now only files on the Macintosh are accessible to FCPX. The USB drive is visible under events and project but it finds no projects or events.
    Please help if you can.
    Thanks
    Barry

Thanks... alas no one has responded.
I think I have the structure that you are recommending.
I have a root level directory (Final Cut Events) with the files in them.
The puzzling thing is that it used to work before the migration!.
Anyway I'm going to move the contents to the root and see what happens.
    On a slightly different note...
I also posted a question about CPU utilization. Can I ask a question or two?
While rendering a short clip, I noticed burst of disk activity when the render started (likely loading the media files into ram since I have about 4Gigs available, then almost no activity while the render is happening, then more disk activity when its done.
However the cpu activity is not as high as I would have expected since rendering requires a lot of cpu.
What is your experience? I know some render is done by the GPU, but in my older i5 the CPU was about 100%, now in my i7 its about 50%.
Please look at the attached utilization for CPU and disk activity.
    Thanks for any thoughts... Barry

  • Premiere Pro CS6 Project Manager gives error & will not manage project - OS X Lion 10.7.5

Premiere CS6 project manager reports  an error and will not manage my project. I have tried several times with both "Create New Trimmed Project" and " Collect Files and Copy to New Location". I have also tried to manage the project with options checked and unchecked (Include Preview Files, Include Audio Conform Files, Rename Media Files to Match Clip Names). Every time I try to manage the project, the process takes a few hours and then gives an error asking me to try again.
The project is 90 minutes long and uses multiple footage formats:
    Sony FS100
    Sony NEX7
    Sony NEX-5n
    Canon C300
    Canon 5DmkII
    Panazonic HVX200
    My computer is:
    Processor  2 x 2.66 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory  12 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)
Is this a bug, or are there specific things I can do to troubleshoot the problem? I have read of issues with AVCHD. I have confirmed all of my AVCHD folders are intact. Any other Ideas?
    THANKS!

I have this same problem on a Mac with CS6. I was simple trying to archive a project using the "collect files" option. After five or six hours of troubleshooting (Thanks Adobe) I have narrowed it down to MXF clips that came over in a Final Cut EDL (Projects created in PP with MXF files seem to be fine).  In other words, as I was transitioning from FCP to Premiere Pro, I sent four or five projects out of FCP as an EDL, opened them in PP and continued to edit.  It seemed to work really well until I attempted to archive my media.  If there was a single raw MXF file in the timeline (Not the project panel for some reason) the Project Manager would give me the standard error:"An unknown error occurred during the Project Manager operation. Please save your project and retry the operation.".
I have found two solutions that seem to work, both of which are a pain in the ax.
Option 1: Save the original project file only to an archive folder.  Then delete all the old timelines from the project, and save the project with a new name.  Create a new timeline and just drag all the raw video and audio into it. (Project Manager needs a timeline of some sort to archive) Then use the Project Manager to archive the modified project.  If I need the project in the future, I'll need to open the original PP project and relink all the media from the archived "media only" project folder.
Unbelievably, if you were to take this route and then re-edit the project in the future, it looks like you would run up against the same archiving issue AGAIN next time (At least using CS6). You'd have to go through all the steps above to archive it a second time. Depending on the size of your project, you may want to take option 2 and get the pain over with once-and-for-all.
Option 2: If you only have a couple of MXF files in the timeline (in my case I had mostly renders from AE by the time I was done and THAT raw project had archived in AE just fine) you can export the raw MXF files to another format, then replace the media in your project panel.  Finally, use the Project Manager to archive the project like you should have been able to in the first place if Adobe had written the code well in the first place!

how to see themes on full page of firefox like chrome and not only on the top bar

Personas or Lightweight Themes are the ones that just put a background on the toolbars.
You can look for the real (original style) themes here:
:and you should be able to easily identify them by their pictures. I would suggest that you pick a theme that is identified under the version information to also run in Firefox 8, so you will be able to continue when you upgrade to 6.0.2 and above.
I am on 6.0.2 and I would be shown 450 themes.
Another method is to install a style using the "Stylish" extension, specifically a global style is what you are interested in. There are 3,697 global styles which is one [http://userstyles.org/categories category] of styles. Styles are not programs but you can put up a background picture of your choosing or color areas. But instead of hundreds to choose from you have thousands and they are mostly variations of another style. One advantage of a style is that you can modify a style to suit yourself with little or no programming experience.

  • Danish Keyboard Layout working in Gnome but not in Kde

    Hi!,
I'm trying to get to work the Danish Keyboard layout in Kde, with no success. In Gnome it works fine, but in Kde (or well, any Qt based app), when I hit å, ø, or try to write accents, I get two white quads instead of the correct character.  It works if I write them in a gtk aplication, copy and paste in a kde app.. but...
Does anyone knows what can be possibly happening?
    My xorg.conf has
    Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
    Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
    Option "XkbLayout" "dk"
and Kde is configured to use the DK Layout.
    thanks!
    silencer
ps. I wrote this in gnome

Ouh, no.. I have another problem
I want the language (for apps like gcc, or mc) to be english, not danish, so I replaced in rc.conf da_DK.utf8 by en_DK.utf8, and got the language as english, but now.. accents doesn't work anymore. They do work, again, under gnome, but not in kde.  Any ideas?
    thanks a lot

Import the project into the after Effects . import the project into a new project about Premier pro. But it did not solve the problem. all the time the error. Please help, a lot of work in this project. This is a great betrayal of the Premier pro...

    Hi Pochtawood,
Yes, uninstalling iCloud will allow you to create new projects.
For legacy projects, you can repair them with a patch created by a user.
Details and links to the patch are here: Re: Debug event f:\mightysilt_win64\shared\adobe\mediacore\mediafoundation\api\inc\keyframe

  • IMovie '10 consumes all RAM and I can not export projects

A few days ago I upgraded to iMovie '10, but since then consumes all memory, close the application, I can not export projects. I upgraded my Macbook Pro from 4GB to 8GB of RAM, but the problem persists. I'd like to iMovie 9.0.9 but I do not know how to do

I have this same issue also, on my MacBook Pro. When I click 'export project' nothing comes up at all.
It's very frustrating and I have tried everything also:
    All files rendered
    Re-installed FCPX
The only change i've made since it has started happening was upgrading to Mavericks OS X 10.9.1. So it has to be something to do with that.
I was wondering and hoping if you have since solved the problem, and can help me with a solution to amend it.
If anyone else can help it will be much appreciated, and most thankful.

  • Billing plan is not updating project plan revenue

    Hi,
My client has scenario like he creates projects manually and when he creates any sales order, he assign this sales order to the project though account assignment tab.
The plan revenue for the project comes from sales order billing plan.
The issue is the billing plan is not updating project plan revenue. Even if there is a billing plan, project report S_ALR_87013543 shows there is no revenue.
Please tell me if there is any link between sales order billing plan and project plan revenue.
How can I resolve this issue?

    Hi,
I think you have not maintained planning profile in project definition.
Goto project and  check planning profile in control data.
We can create planning profile in OPSB t.code.  Select the fields Quotation and sales order in +Automatic revenue planning segment+ and assign revenue element.
Now create a sales order with billing plan and check S_ALR_87013543 report.
    Regards,

I had a repair done on my MacBook Pro and had to have a new hard drive installed. The Apple Auth Repair Shop then updated the OS from 10.6.8 to 10.7.5. Now my iPhoto v 9.2.3 will not open and it sounds like it will not work with this OS. Can you please advise?

You may need many other updates to retain compatibility with Lion. I suggest you reinstall Snow Leopard. Unfortunately, you will need to erase the drive first. Be sure to backup your data if you haven't done so already.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.

  • [NOT SOLVED] Gnome will not start

I'm editing this original message by way of summing up so that anyone coming here with a similar problem will know what to expect if they read further:
I believe the reason Gnome would not start on the machine in question was that it made too many demands on the available hardware (see desm0te's comments below).
For this reason I decided to switch to LXDE as Desktop Environment which works well on the restricted hardware. I did not investigate the Gnome related problem any further.
    The original message follows:
After a successful installation of the basic command-line Arch according to the Beginner's Guide, I went on to install Gnome according to instructions in the Wiki.
I Did not want Gnome to start automatically but only when I type in the command startx.
This it does, but all I get is the nice blue "curtain" background - no black bar at top of screen with Actions, date , name etc...
    and no cursor.
One funny thing was - this afternoon while I was concentrating on another machine - the black bar suddenly appeared (apparently for no reason) showing the date and my name but with the X cursor
from the X11 environment. However as soon as I moved this cursor to the bar and clicked, both dursor and bar disappeared never to return .
I decided to redirect the stderr of startx to a file in the hope that it would give a clue as to what was wrong.

If this gives clues could someone please point me in the right direction? Are the two EE messages significant (Failed to load modules "vesa" and "fbdev"). What is Clutter*? What should I do to get it initialized?
    Thanks for any help.

    * Sorry about that - it's an open source graphics library for creating hardware-accelerated user interfaces - but am I any the wiser for that

    desm0tes:
To take your points one by one:
    1. I am now quite happy with LXDE too. The problems I mentioned last night seem to have gone (???!!!) and I can just start LXDE from my user account. Maybe later, I'll realize what I was doing wrong or rather what I did to make it work... . Now I just type:
    startx
    having put:
    exec ck-launch-session startlxde
    in .xinitrc.
    2. Thanks for the tip about yaourt. I shall try that sooner or later.
    3. Well as I said - I don't understand what I was doing wrong -  which makes me feel a bit stupid and is rather annoying but looking on the bright side it's fine to be able to start-up, have a legible screen and logout successfully - which I couln't do before. I now have to figure out how to expand the contents of LXDE a bit but that's the fun of it!
LXDE starts up nicely with minimal possibilties but I can change look & feel and customize the panel settings.
    "Menu" contains:
        Accessories:
            File Manager
            Image Viewer
            LXTerminal
            Leafpad
            Xarchiver
        Internet:
            Avahi SSH Server Browser
            Avahi VNC Server Browser
        Office:
            ePDFViewer
        System Tools:
            Avahi Zerconf Browser
            Task Manager
        Preferences:
            Customize Look and Feel
            Monitor Settings
            OPenbox Configuration Maanger
            Preferred Applications
        Run
        Logout
All of these start up OK and work, on cursory examination, except the Avahi Browsers which I don't understand and which appear to do nothing as no window appears on screen.
    4. I'm not quite sure I can yet see the use of a login manager such as SLiM, since I seem to get on quite nicely without it but since I've heard it mentioned a lot I'm sure I'm just missing the point.
