Umlaut Coding

Hello,
I am creating German website at the moment, and as some of you know, German is full of ä, ö and ü (Umlaut).
In Muse, when I normally add text to a page with an Umlaut in it, the result is not displayed correctly in the browser. I tested several browsers to be sure it is not a browser issue.
Then I took a look at the html-files generated by Muse and I saw, that the Umlaut in the coded text is not as it sould be.
In HTML-Code an ö should be &ouml, and ä should be &auml and so on...
Therefore my question is. Does Muse transfer symbols and Umlauts added in Muse into the right html-code?
Or is there any other solution to my problem?
Regards,
Julius

HTML pages generated by Muse use UTF-8 encoding, therefore the use of ö is not necessary. It sounds like there's a point in your workflow where an FTP client or other software is treating the files as ASCII or platform encoding, which would corrupt any characters above 7-bit ASCII.
You should not have a problem with umlauts when previewing in browser locally or when viewing a site published to Business Catalyst. If there's a problem after the files are uploaded to your server using FTP, then most likely the FTP client treated the files incorrectly during upload or it's possible, though unlikely, the settings on the web server itself are incorrectly handling the UTF-8 files.

  • Wrong coding of german umlaut in XML/XSLT output

    I'm using Oracle 8.1.5 with XSQL Servlet.
    The contents of my database contains german
    umlaut. Visiting the HTML output using
    Netscape/WinNT seems to be correct, but when
    I save the page the saved page contains a
    unknown (for me!) hex conversion of the
    umlaut and not 'ä' etc. The stylesheet
    uses enconding ISO-8859-1.
    I think, the problem will be found in the
    stylesheet, but I don't know where.

    Hi,
    I test on my Lync client and there is no issue about it.
    Please update to the latest version for Lync Server 2013 (the latest version is 5.0.8308.815) and then test again.

  • Umlauts not displayed correctly

    Hi,
    We have developed a screen in 12.1 and the umlauts (German & Spanish) are not display correctly. Is there a language pack / custom actions we need deploy for this to work properly?
    Regards,
    Chanti.

    Its those special characters with a pair of dots on their head, like ä etc. These are not being displayed properly in the Web UI screens after upgrading to 12.1.
    These special characters are coded in the alert/warning/error messages in a .js file. Two things here -
    i) When we did the migration from 11.5 to 12.1, those got transformed to a [] (read squarebox) sorts. Are these something that the migration tool can't handle as desired?
    ii) We fixed these characters manually in the code in 12.1. But when we run the script they are still not displayed correctly in the Web UI, for instance ä is being displayed as A~, something like that. Wondering if we need to deploy some custom actions or add a line at the top of .js or .html code?
    Regards,
    Chanti.

  • Encoding Problem: Losing German Umlaute from gathering data from Oracle 8i

    my problem does concerns the diplay of german Umlaute such as äöüß etc. The OS is NW65 out of the box with Apache 2.0.49 and tomcat 4.1.28, JVM 1.4.2_02 and JDBC-driver Oracle 8i 8.1.7 JDBC Driver.
    The Data containing Umlaute which are retreived from the Database does somehow lose it´s Umlaute. The Umlaut which are coded in the servlet directly in order to generate the regular HTML does display the Umlaute without any problem.
    The same servlet and request from a Unix Enviroment does work fine. We have checked all Codepage settings (Java, NetWare, Tomcat etc).

    Hi Sven and Ingmar,
    I will try to kill 2 birds with one stone here. First of all you should check the definition of your current database character set and make sure that it can support all the characters that you need to store in your database.
    Please check out
    http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/reference/iso.asp
    WE8ISO8859P9 is for Turkish and WE8ISO8859P1 is for western European (without Euro support).
    Next you need to set your client NLS_LANG character set (eg. for your SQL*Plus seesion), so that Oracle can convert your client operating system characters correctly into your database character set. The NLS_LANG character set also determines how SQL*Plus interpret/display your characters upon retrieval from the db.
    In both of your cases , I believed that the client NLS_LANG setting was not defined , hence this was defaulting to AMERICAN_AMERICA.US7ASCII. This is telling SQL*PLUS that the your client operating system can handle ASCII data only , hence all the accented characters are converted to ASCII during insertion into the database. Likewise upon data retrieval.
    If you are running SQL*PLUS client on English Windows then you NLS_LANG character set should be WE8MSWIN1252 and for Turkish Windows it should set to TR8MSWIN1254 .
    If the client character set and the database character set are the same , Oracle does not perform any data conversion, that's why if you use a US7ASCII database and set you NLS_LANG character set to US7ASCII .then you can insert all the accented Latin characters , Japanese , Chinese etc. This configuration is not supported, and it can cause many issues.
    For more information on character set configuration and possible problems.
    Please check out the white paper Database Character set migration on http://otn.oracle.com/products/oracle8i/content.html#nls

  • XML Parsing Base64 Content - Special Characters Umlaut etc

    Hello!
    I am currently parsing an XML file which has it's content encoded in Base64. My application parses the XML file (from a provider) and pass on the content to a GUI where the user can change the value of the nodes and store the same back in a new XML (which is then to be sent back to the provider). The Application uses only "UTF-8" . I am currently using the Base64 class provided at http://iharder.net/base64
    The problem I have is that the special characters like , etc, are being depicted as (?) i.e. unreadable. Only when I control the decoding process i.e. String resoolt = new String (result.getBytes(), "UTF-8") do I get the correct content, and the same can be posted on the GUI.
    The application produces an XML file (The application in question is a translation app), which when re-opened in the application for retranslation has the same problem... it is shown with teh special characters with (?).
    After a lot of debugging I found that the XML produced by the application does not need the forcing of content into UTF-8 using the code above, it is read automatically correctly (with all the content correct), but due to the coding I have done... String resoolt = new String (result.getBytes(), "UTF-8") the nodes are decoded with the earlier problem umlauts et al missing.
    Now I could use a test to differntiate between the two cases XML from the provider or the XML which is produced by my own app, and doesn"t work on the Provider and treat them differently, but I don't want this solution since the XML which my app produces is not accepted as input at the providers.
    So my query.. what is the best way to go about it now... I am quite stymied >(
    Thanks!
    Tim

    Amazingly enough some other user has the identical problem to yours and has expressed it in exactly the same words. Has the same name as you too.

    To convert UTF-8 XML data to SAP default encoding and display umlauts add the following code at the and of your program.
    data: conv_obj type ref to cl_abap_conv_in_ce,
          xstr type xstring,
          lv_line like line of lt_import.
    field-symbols <fs> type any.
    conv_obj = cl_abap_conv_in_ce=>create(
            encoding = 'UTF-8'
            endian = 'B' ).
    loop at lt_import into ls_import.
      assign  ls_import to <fs> casting type x.
      xstr = <fs>.
      conv_obj->convert(
        exporting input = xstr
        importing data = lv_line ).
      write:/ lv_line.
    endloop.

  • Runtime.exec() with language specific chars (umlauts)

    Hello,
    my problem is as follows:
    I need to run the glimpse search engine from a java application on solaris using JRE 1.3.1 with a search pattern containing special characters.
    Glimpse has indexed UTF8 coded XML files that can contain text with language specific characters in different languages (i.e. german umlauts, spanish, chinese). The following code works fine on windows and with JRE 1.2.2 on solaris too:
    String sSearchedFreeText = "T&#252;r";
    String sEncoding = "UTF8";
    // Convert UTF8 search free text
    ByteArrayOutputStream osByteArray = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
    Writer w = new OutputStreamWriter(osByteArray, sEncoding);
    w.write(sSearchedFreeText);
    w.close();
    // Generate process
    String commandString = "glimpse -y -l -i -H /data/glimpseindex -W -L 20 {" + osByteArray.toString() + "}";
    Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(commandString);
    One of the XML files contains:
    <group topic="service-num">
    <entry name="id">7059</entry>
    <entry name="name">T&#195;&#188;rverkleidung</entry>
    </group>
    Running the java code with JRE 1.2.2 on solaris i get following correct commandline
    glimpse -y -l -i -H /data/glimpseindex -W -L 20 {T&#195;&#188;rverkleidung}
    --> glimpse finds correct filenames
    Running it with JRE 1.3.1 i get following incorrect commandline
    glimpse -y -l -i -H /data/glimpseindex -W -L 20 {T??rverkleidung}
    --> glimpse finds nothing
    JRE 1.2.2 uses as default charset ISO-8859-1 but JRE 1.3.1 uses ASCII on solaris.
    Is it possible to change the default charset for the JVM in solaris environment?
    Or is there a way to force encoding used by Runtime.exec() with java code?
    Thanks in advance for any hints.
    Karsten

    osByteArray.toString()Yes, there's a way to force the encoding. You provide it as a parameter to the toString() method.

  • Umlauts are not displayed correctly in different programs

    Hello!
    I live in germany, but my locale is set to "en_US.UTF8" because I like to have everything in english.
    I do not have any problems with umlauts on the machine, but when I connect with sFTP oder Samba to it, the umlauts in files are not displayed correctly.
    Look at this example
    The upper word is how it looks in "ssh putty" (=locally on the machine), the bottom one is from "filezilla" (from my windows host)
    This is my locale
    locale
    LANG=en_US.UTF-8
    LC_CTYPE="en_US.UTF-8"
    LC_NUMERIC="en_US.UTF-8"
    LC_TIME="en_US.UTF-8"
    LC_COLLATE="en_US.UTF-8"
    LC_MONETARY="en_US.UTF-8"
    LC_MESSAGES="en_US.UTF-8"
    LC_PAPER="en_US.UTF-8"
    LC_NAME="en_US.UTF-8"
    LC_ADDRESS="en_US.UTF-8"
    LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.UTF-8"
    LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US.UTF-8"
    LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.UTF-8"
    LC_ALL=
    When I create a file "asd_aöü" locally on the machine (with the help of ssh - putty), it looks fine, but when I connect by samba or filezilla again the umlauts are not displayed correctly.
    Do you understand my problem? What can I do?
    Thanks!

    Adobe Bridge CS6, Output to HTML Gallery coding issue.
    I have created the html, JavaScript, css file using the output function in Bridge CS6, which nicely generates the coding, pages, folders and files. I can edit the html files such as gallery title, name, etc., in Dreamweaver CS6 just fine and preview them in a selected browser (both chrome and IE) and everything works fine.
    When I ftp upload the files and directories into my hosting account (Go Daddy), the images do not show up. The file table appears but the thumbs images does not appear and when selected to preview the larger image, it does not appear either. I have not altered the file structure at all. Go Daddy says it is a coding issue, but I cannot fine any errors.
    Have you seen this issue before? All Adobe help research have failed. Any suggestions??

    Have you asked on Go Daddy site for help in uploading Adobe Bridge script?  Just to say it is coding is not helpful.

  • Coding Confusion: Links linking to wrong...links

    Hi everyone,
    I'm writing some code in Flash MX 2004 and everything works fine except for the last button (4DSystemsProducts). According to the coding if none of the drop down buttons work it should go to products.php, but for some reason it goes to 4DSystemsProducts.php. All of the other menus are coded the same way and work fine, if I take out that button it works fine, or if I take out button 7 and switch 4DSystems to button 7 everything works.
    Here is the code to clear up this explanation.
    [CODE]
    function getActiveSub()

  • Contact form-checkbox PHP coding doesnt work

    I am a beginner to web page design so i would be grateful if you can explain to me what PHP coding i would need for 'Checkbox' and where to place it in the PHP coding below. I can submit the form to my email with all the headings and the filled in forms with checkbox Yes or No.
    Only problem i have is that part of the check box info appear right at the top of the email message rather than the 'Name', 'Tel', 'Email' etc..Another half of the checkbox appear where it suppose to be wih double heading as shown below. I would also like to remove the <br> from the email message. Can you also tell me how to change the colour for heading so its clear.
    I have marked the checkbox code in BLUE for both HTML and PHP coding below. Sorry for the long coding. Look forward to hearing from someone. Much appreciated.

    Dear David
    Thank you so much for the clear explanation. I have been using Lynda.com Dreamweaver CS5 tutorial. I found the coding for checkbox through search and added to the coding from Lynda.com tutorial.
    I made few changes to the coding by removing:
    $msg = "$rearExt<br>\r\n$sideExt<br>\r\n$twoStoreyRear<br>\r\n
              $twoStoreySide<br>\r\n$loft<br>\r\n$newBuild<br>\r\n$flat<br>\r\n$other\r\n";
    as the email message shows the results from the checkbox twice.
    I also removed the <br> from:
    $body = "Name: $name<br>\r\n
              Email: $email<br>\r\n
              Contact No: $contact_number<br>\r\n
             Other: $other\r\n
              Message:\r\n
                $message";
    I have add the result and the PHP coding you have helped to fixed for anyone needing a working PHP code containing Text Fields, Drop Down List, Checkbox and Text Area. Many thanks for all your help. If you have a coding to change the heading text colour I very much appericate it.

  • German Umlaute don't work after upgrading to Yosemite with Japanese Romaji Layout set on U.S.

    Hi everyone,
    previously i could just use [ALT] + [U] and then press [A] / [a] / [U] / [u] / [O] / [o] to generate the german umlaut version.
    After installing Yosemite this does not work anymore, which is kinda frustrating. Cause it forces me to add another keyboard layout and switch when i have to write a german umlaut.
    I was previously using 'Input Source' > 'Japanese' > Enabled Romaji (Romaji layout was set to U.S.) & Hiragana.
    For testing purpose i added the Standard U.S. Layout and writing the Umlaut with the keyboard shortcut still works there. So that's why i think this is a Romaji specific bug.
    Has anyone any idea what's wrong ? Did Apple change something ?
    Best Regards

    Before I stumbled upon this thread, there was no flag at all. I had the character viewer there because pre-Yosemite it was the only way to access emoji (and things like arrows and other special symbols) in many apps (and still is for my Adobe CS5 apps). Additionally, I would use the keyboard viewer from time to time as a way to learn which keys to use for other special symbols (bring up the keyboard viewer and press option or shift-option or other combinations and it would show you a preview of what each key would generate).
    While reading this thread, I added more input sources (US International and US Extended) and would see the flags. The flags replaced the previous character/keyboard viewer menu icon. I switched between each flag to test my issue under each, to no avail.  Then I tried adding the Spanish keyboard but still had the same issue.
    Now I've removed all the input sources except the primary US keyboard. There is no longer a flag in my menu, it's gone back to the character viewer icon.
    The issue is still there. When I type option-r, u, or g, in any app nothing happens at all.
    Unfortunately, neither auto-substitution nor press-and-hold work in Adobe CS5 apps, which is where I need to use these special characters the most.
    Thank you for reaching out
