Unable to drag songs or playlists to my ipod

I'm having trouble with not being able to drag songs or playlists to my ipod. With manual updating on. Any suggestions. Thank you very much.

hi mattie!
okay, we'd better check on this possibility:
Windows confuses iPod with network drive and may keep iPod from mounting or songs may seem to disappear

  • Unable to drag songs to playlist iTunes 11.1

Recently installed iTunes 11.1 on my pc (Windows 7). When I click and try to drag a song to a new playlist, it won't drag. I also get a red circle with a red diagonal indicating that it won't work. How do I get the songs into a playlist?

Why doesn't it work, what happens when you try?

I am unable to drage songs from a shared music library between computers.   This used to work perfectly until a month ago.   I have installed the newest version of Itunes on both computers and have rebooted them, but nothing happens when I try to drag a song to another playlist or another shared folder.  Any ideas how to fix this?

  • Unable to drag songs within iTunes.

I am trying to move a song from my computer library music to my iPod and am unable to.  I am unable to drag any song anywhere, even to a playlist.  Is there a solution?

Make sure you have enough room for the songs on your iPod and that they aren't already synced to the iPod.
You could also try syncing the songs to the iPod automatically, to see if they are able to sync.
If that doesn't help, try restoring the iPod.

  • Can't drag songs into playlist

I can't drag songs from my library into one of my playlists. Other playlists are fine - it is just the one that won't take songs. Is there a limit for the number of songs in a playlist?

What sort of playlist is it? If it's a smart playlist then it gets it's content from the rules that have been set for it, for example recently added. You won't be able to drag to a playlist like this just a normal one. The icon for an normal playlist that you can drag to will have a musical note on it, a smart playlist has an icon that looks like a little gear wheel.

  • ITunes 10.4 can't drag songs into playlists

There is one glaring difference in the new iTunes 10.4 (80). I can't drag songs from one playlist to another. It doesn't matter whether the source is a smart playlist or a regular dumb one, or even the main music library.
smart playlist or dumb playlist or even the main music library) into other (dumb) playlist.
As a workaround, I can copy (cmd-c) and paste (cmd-v), but this is ... umm ... sub-optimal, because you have to change playlists to do it. Then when you go back to the first folder, any search you might have used before is now gone.
Is there any way to bring back drag and drop? Some weird .plist hack or anything?

Well. My first efforts to search for a solution were poorly executed, because I tried again and found lots of answers.
The problem appears to be using a Wacom driver. See the discussion here and (same thread) here and here. No idea when that will be fixed. I use a 8 or 9 year old Graphire, and drivers have been a problem for most of those. Sigh.
But this experience also made me learn that you can right click to add selections to a playlist.
I even learned how that first column works, which I never knew before.

  • Can't drag songs in playlists

I'm not able to drag songs within most of my playlists. I can drag and drop them INTO my playlists but can't drag once they're inside the lists. Does anyone know how I can correct this?

There's also a chance that you have a certain collumn header active which causing this.
Look in your iTunes Help > playlists
    for more info regarding this.

  • Suddenly can't drag songs to playlist

This just started happening. I want to drag songs from my library to playlists, I used to be able to drag them to my desired playlist on the left hand side but now for some reason I am not able to. I'm running OS 10.6.2 and iTunes 9.0.2
Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to offer.

Apple does not post or respond to these user-to-user forums.
Apple very, very rarely shares what they are working on so there is no way of knowing if Apple is working on this issue. I highly doubt any Apple employees who may be working on it would risk their job by talking about it
Ed is definitely helping this thread by answering your question in a forthright and respectful manner.

You still will not get an answer from Apple.

  • Can't drag songs to playlist????

for some reason, on my wife's itunes (not mine, mine, on the same computer is fine) it will not allow her to drag songs from her library into a playlist. I've never had this problem with mine, so I'm not sure what the problem is. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks to all who cleared up the question of clicking and dragging music into playlists, but does anyone know why is it that we can't click and drag songs into the "purple" smart playlist categories?

  • Cannot drag songs within playlists and library

I can drag songs from the main library to the playlists, but i cannot change the order of anything inside the playlist. If I try, the edges around my screen will turn pink. Ive googled and searched this problem on the forums, and I cant find anything in settings about it, any help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks a lot

Click at the top of the number column (extreme left) to highlight the header. Click on the song you want to move and drag it to where you want it to be. Make sure neither Shuffle or Repeat are switched on in the playlist, either of those can prevent you reordering tracks.

  • Dragging songs to playlist

I've created a new playlist in iTunes and have started draging my desired songs from my music library to the playlist successfully.
Then I decided to purchase a song from iTunes, which I discovered could not be dragged to my playlist. So I went back to dragging over my already existing songs (mostly not purchased) but now NOTHING will drop into my playlist!
Why? Very frustrating as it was all working fine 10 minutes ago! Any help would be great...

Verify you have the right boxex checked to sync
iTunes: Syncing media content to iOS devices and iPod
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Restore from backup. See:

  • Unable to drag and drop playlist to iPod

I have a 30 GB iPod Classic which I manage via iTunes on Windows 7.  I manually manage which songs, playlists, etc, are synced to the iPod, since my music collection is somewhat bigger than 30 GB.
I recently made a new playlist on iTunes with a lot of songs (about 2,700) and attempted to drag and drop the playlist onto my iPod.  Sadly, iTunes won't allow me to do so, and does not offer any diagnostic or error messages to tell me what the problem is.  Just the preceding day I was able to drag-and-drop a playlist with about half as many songs onto the iPod.  All or almost all of the songs on the new playlist are already on the iPod, and there is 3 GB of space free on the iPod.
Any idea what the problem is?  Is there a limit to max playlist size?
    Thanks in advance,
    -PT

OK, it's actually a latency problem:  when you drag and drop a REALLY LONG playlist to an iPod, it doesn't immediately figure out what you are trying to do (or else it's polling the music list on the iPod and comparing it to the playlist, I don't know).  So you have to drag the playlist and hold it over the iPod icon in iTunes until the iPod icon opens up, then drop it.

  • Is there a way to drag a new playlist onto my ipod without creating doubles of all of the songs that are already on my ipod?

i just want to put the playlist on my ipod but it re adds all the songs that are already on my ipod. do i just have to recreate the playlists on my ipod?

Playlists are just files with pointers.  If you have a song on multiple playlists that doesn't mean the song is copied twice.  Any instance of a song in playlists just points to the single file it syncs over.
If you have not synced in a while however and the song is already on the phone there is a chance it has been a while and with changes made with each iTunes update or iPhone iOS update, they may have changed the logic of the playlists files or how it manages and organizes the file structure, thus it may be needed to update (resync) some of your files.  That is just an educated guess.
What I mentioned first still applies, songs are only copied once even if on multiple playlists.  Regular syncing helps keep things fresh and up to date and yes at times there are changes to the process that may cause extra sync time to redo some things an updated way.

Hi, and welcome to the community!
Try Creating a new playlist, copying all the songs from that one into the new one, then adding the track.
