Unable to login on Mac Pro Server (ML)

Hi,
perhaps a small introduction to my problem;
We use a Mac Pro (with ML Server) as our main server and have about 5 users configured on it. They all use iMacs execpt for one user, who uses a MacBook Pro. The (brand new) server was configured about 3 months ago using the Server App. The services that were configured include DNS, iCal, File Services, Open Directory, and that's about it. On the server itself a local user (with Admin rights) was configured, all the other users were local network users.
Now, the MacBook Pro user had to be configured as a mobile user (in order to login to his MBP with his network credentials but outside the local network). We tried to do this from his MBP, and that's where we a first error (Seemed the user could not mount the ('null') home directory). So, we played around in the Server App with the File Services. We managed to get the mobile user account to work, however, it now seemed that all the users had their home directories on their local hard drive (not on the Mac Pro server anymore). Then, we tried to undo our changes... And that's when the server became irresponsive. We tried to reboot the Mac Pro server, and now, we can not even log in to the Mac Pro server anymore. It seems that "some error occured" which does not allow us to login to the system. This error pops up with ALL the users, including the local user with Admin rights...
How does one continue now... ? Is there a possibility to get back the user data (if not, not a big deal, since the system was merely setup anyway) ?
Best regards,
Salva

First.. there is no reason data stored on the server would be lost just because users accounts arent working.
Network logins are depdendent on Open Directory and OD is very dependent on both the client and the server's DNS resolution.
You can login locally in the server with the admin account, correct?
If so, open Terminal and paste this:
     dscl . -list /Users
If it responds with a list of users, then we know at least your open directory service is online.
You need to check your logs.
use Console to review
/var/log/system.log
/var/log/opendirectory.log
What is the result of:
sudo changeip -checkhostname
Hope you don't mind if I ask.. but do you really need network homes?
Its adds much more overhead.  I see new administrators set it up because its 'in the manual', when they really don't need it.

  • Multi User Login to Mac Pro OS X Server?

I want to be able to create two(or more) virtual users to Mac pro server & to be able to login at same time through windows based laptop/desktop. Each user should be able to work seperately. Is it possible with below config? If yes, will it cause any performance issue?

    Developers?
They can use SSH to connect, login, and do unix shell -style development any time, without interrupting the main-display User (if any). Post a Post-it Note on the main display warning the main user not to restart without warning.
All you need to do is create regular Mac OS X Accounts for them so that they will have a place for their files to be kept and can create a shell session. They do not need to be Admins. You should Install Developer Tools to be sure XCode and all the tools are there for them to work.
My son studying Computer Science logs in to our Home Server from college and runs compiles and debugs scripts all the time. We don't even know when he is there, unless he starts up the MineCraft Server.

Appreciate your support and if possible , how to do this?

If you want to work with Mac OS X, you need one computer per simultaneous user.
What you are describing, " Multiple simultaneous logins to a single computer" is not avialable on a regular Mac of any description, unless you decide to use Unix tools instead of Mac OS X.
Server will happily store files for many, many users and provide them to multiple (up to hundreds) of computers at "near hard Drive" speeds over Gigabit Ethernet. It can make the File Sharing part easy.

I want to Connect my Mac Mini as a Slave to a Mac pro Server while at the same time using the Mac mini's thunderbolt ports peripherals ( ie monitor, Sound Card, Hard drives) Creating a poor man's new mac Pro. Can this be Done?

Well, I really would love the new unreleased mac pro however , I'm not sure of the expected cost , Everyone speculates from $3,000 to $8,000, in which I may have to wait a while to purchase.
To the point .... I want fully functional thunderbolt ports to be on the current mac pro's .... wonder if anyone had workarounds yet?...  or could I chain the the current mac pro to a mac mini to make that happen?

  • Has anyone experience Mac Pro Server RAID card failure?

RAID card of our company's Mac Pro server broke twice in less than 12 months, resulting in our server being out of office for more than 11 weeks for repair. I really would like to know if we are just unlucky or if this kind of hardware failure happened also to other people?
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi
I know it's no consolation to you but judging from my experience I think you've been unlucky.
I've installed Apple RAID Cards in numerous XServes and MacPros at many sites and apart from the rare battery failure they've all gone OK and are still working as intended AFAIK.

  • Does the new Mac Pro Server have lights out management?

I would like to know if the Mac Pro Server has the LOM. Such as the ability to turn off, on, and reboot by simply using the server admin tools. I use this feture very often with my current xserve and would rather buy a new server then try and find a used 2009 xserve.

    No.

  • To RAID or not to RAID: 4Tb Mac Pro Server

    Hi,
Hope someone can steer in the right direction.
I've got a Mac Pro Server. It has 4 x 1Tb HDs and a 6TB Drobo S for backup. It has a RAID card.
My query is, as I need at least 2Tb space instantly to store Final Cut Pro files, etc. Won't be using the server to actually edit anything, or any other tasks.
    a) Do I set up RAID and get only approx. 2TB of usable space - therefore filling it up straightaway
    b) Leave it as 4 separate 1Tb harddrives (to get most space)and let the Drobo do its BeyondRAID thing? (At the moment the data is all a Mac and on single Firewire external drives).
    c) If I go RAID (it's brand new so I'm at the setup stage). Which is the best option for me?
    d) If I do RAID, should I partition 100gb on drive 1, for OSX and programs, etc and then RAID the rest? I guess that means I have to reinstall the whole system? Or can I 'live' partition on a Mac these days?
The Mac Server is a fairly temp solution as we're getting a proper SANs this year, but at present the data lives on a Mac tower (with MyStudio backup drive) and also on a few Firewire drives.
    HELP!
    Many thanks.

    1. With only 4 drives, raid 5 should be fine. That gives 3TB (1TB for redundancy).
    2. A backup is more important than raid.
    3. The raid setup for the san can be tricky. Depending on the size, you may not want raid 5, but 50, or 6. Consider: A 16TB raid 5 array will need to read all bits CORRECTLY to rebuild a failed raid 5 array. What is the bit error rate of modern disks? Approximately 1 bit for 16TB-20TB of data. So a large raid 5 san may fail to rebuild. Got a backup? This is why they created raid 6.
    4. I would setup an extra partition, maybe 100GB, on the raid array. Why? I find it handy, if you need to check the disks, you can reboot from that 100GB partition and check the big partition. Also, you can have 2 different versions of the os on the raid array. You will find this useful, when a update comes out that breaks some things, you can run off the older os and you don't have to live with the broken functionality.

  • Convert a Mac Pro Server from January 2007 with OS 10.4 Server to Snow Leopard 6.0 (NON SERVER)

I have a Mac Pro Server from January 2007 with OS 10.4 Server installed. I want to convert from OS 10 Server OS to just using Snow Leopard 6.0 (NON SERVER). I have two hard drives installed. What is the best way to do this?
Can I just install Snow Leopard NON-SERVER on the second drive, then switch it into the place of the original main drive?
Can I switch the drives, then install the Snow Leopard on the replacement drive?

Not sure how you configured the server, though you can install snow leopard on second HDD and select boot drive with pressing "option" key during startup.

  • Installing Lion Server on brand new Mac Pro Server

So we received a Mac Pro Server with 3x1TB drives and a raid card last friday.
Unpacked it today and booted it up from the recovery partition and launched raid utitlity, as usual its 3 seperate drives (no raid).
So I deleted the second and third volumes leaving only the preinstalled lion server and recovery hd on the first volume.
Called Enterprise Support and got a few knowledge base articles about installing. One of them being about "internet install" which states if you replace the drive with recovery hd on it you can still boot your machine via internet by holding down Cmd+R.
Doing so leaves me with a Folder and a question mark, so it can't find anywhere to boot from.
Doing the same thing with any new mac delivered with normal lion on it will succeed in booting on the same network from apples internet install.
So how do I go about deleting the primary volume (with lion and recovery hd preinstalled) and creating a raid5 over these three drives?
No USB drive with Lion server delivered. It's not needed, of course not...
No DVD with Snow Leopard server delivered.

Simply install CS5.5 right away and it will ask for the previous serials for verification.

  • Mac Pro Server as Windows Server

    Three questions:
    1. Can a Mac Pro Server be used as a Windows Server - i.e. just need the hardware?
    2. Does Windows need to tun on top of Mac software?
    3. If not, will Windows have an issue with the drivers for the hardware?
    Thanks,
    Pieter.

    1. Can a Mac Pro Server be used as a Windows Server - i.e. just need the hardware?
If you have a Mac running Mac OS X Server, you already have a Server capable of supporting Windows clients very nicely indeed. (it can support Mac OS X clients as well). No additional license fees are required. The feature set is very rich.
If instead, you are intent on tossing out Mac OS X software and running Windows or Windows Server, you could do that as well.
If instead, you are intent on running Windows Server Virtualized, I expect you can do that as well.
Drivers for adapting Windows to Mac Hardware are included in Boot Camp software.

  • Whats the best way to move from mac mini server to Mac pro server?

Hi everyone. I am currently running a mac mini server and it's maxed out. I have just purchased a Mac Pro server and I was wondering if anyone has moved there data in a similar scenario. Is it as simple as restoring a time machine backup to the new server? Any insight would most appreciated as I need this to go smoothly. Thank you.

Apple's official Time Machine documentation says NOT to use TM to back up an entire server.
The reason being is that it will NOT properly back up your databases.  The three in question most often used with OS X server is the Mail DB, the MySQL DB and the Open Directory.
Database experience tells me that reason behind their not supporting Databases is the issue with reading info that's being written to or read from while TM is doing it's thing.  It's likely that if the server is under load when the time machine backs up, you're going to get an inconsistent copy.
The ONLY apple documented GUI method of restoring a server is by using the Setup Assistant during the initial setup of a server.  (using a firewire cable to connect and having your old server in target disk mode)
This in fact I would say is the most reliable method of migration.
    (my 2 cents)
Write more and let us know how the new server works on a continual basis!  I've not heard of anyone having a successful restore taken from a live server.

  • Mac pro server

    Hi,
I found a Mac Pro Server 2010 for a good price, can I install Lion to use it as a "ordinary" Mac Pro?
    Regards,
    Niclas

Mac OS X Server runs on "regular" Hardware.
Server is a software set added to the standard-issue Mac OS X to perform aditional services. It has rather different priorities for tasks, putting priority on Server functions and reducing the urgency of User functions.
For this reason, you may prefer to install a new copy of Mac OS X (regular version), rather than just using the Installed Server as your Operating System.
Although it is not recommended, there are folks who are running Server as their Operating System.

  • Routing Appletalk on Mac Pro Server 10.4

    Hi all,
what I would like to do is to route Appletalk from one ethernet port to the other, i.e. have Appletalk active on both ports (if you like to know why is because I have one Ethernet port to my college network and the other one connected my office private network with a very old Kodak 8650 printer that works only thru Appletalk).
Previously I had a G5 with 10.4 Server and I was able to set it up nicely following the instructions at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106453 but since I switched to the Mac Pro that does not work anymore.
Does anyone have any experience on this? Is the Intel OS 10.4 unable to do this?
Can I mess around with Darwin and get it to work (yeah, right

I set this up on five interfaces of my 10.4.7 PPC
XServe last night. What is or isn't happening?
What happens is that Appletalk is enabled only on one port. The one which is set up as a SeedRouter (in the preferences.plist); the one set up as a Node does not sees anything any Zone, or Server or Printer
If you understand AppleTalk networking, it seems fairly
straightforward. If you want, post the AppleTalk
    stanzas from /Library/Preferences/SystemConfig/prefernces.xml.
I'm not sure how to post the whole file, the relevant portions of the file are (in xml)

I doubt that Intel has much, if anything, to do with
That's what I thought except that the same file preferences.plist file that works on a my G5, does not work on the MacPro
