Unable to undo applied embedded fonts

Hello All,
I have application with text box created with container controller and textflow.
Also I have applied embedded fonts dynamicaly using
styleManager.loadStyleDeclarations2(url,false);
but after this when I try to undo, previous font is not get applied.
When I debug the application, i fonund that generation is number is mismatch.
please anybady know why it is? When I apply different font size or any other property link color, Undo works properly.
Thanks,
Vikram

Undo can only undo those changes that are inside operations. If there are direct model changes (changes resulting from an API call that is NOT in an operation), this will cause a generation number mismatch. Undo will be blocked because the model has changed. I would suggest finding out what it is you are calling that is incrementing the generation number, but is not inside an operation.

• Unable to apply embedded font swf to text in text layout framework

Hello,
We have created a swf for a given font (for e.g., Calibri.swf) which contains all the styles (Regular, Italic, Bold, BoldItalic).
We have created a xml which lists the name of the font and the corresponding swf file path. The names from the xml are loaded into a combo box in the application.
When we try to apply the selected font to a text in the text layout framework, it does not apply the same. It sets the font to default "Times" font.
Following is a snippet of code to apply the font to the text:
private function selectFont(fontXML:XML):void {
var path:String = fontXML.@source;
var myEvent:IEventDispatcher = styleManager.loadStyleDeclarations(FlexGlobals.topLevelApplication.url.substring(0,FlexGl obals.topLevelApplication.url.lastIndexOf("/"))+"/"+path);
myEvent.addEventListener(StyleEvent.COMPLETE, function(event:StyleEvent):void{
var editManager:EditManager = textFlow.interactionManager as EditManager;
var itextLayout:TextLayoutFormat = new TextLayoutFormat();
itextLayout.fontSize = 20;
var fontName:String = fontXML.@name;
Alert.show(fontName);
itextLayout.fontFamily = fontName;
Alert.show( "itext = " + itextLayout.fontFamily);
editManager.applyFormat(itextLayout,itextLayout,itextLayout);
var flowLeafElement:FlowElement = textFlow.findLeaf(editManager.anchorPosition) as FlowElement;
editManager.changeStyleName(fontName,flowLeafElement);
Can anyone please let us know what is missing in the implementation?
Thanks in advance.
Vikram

My recommendation: unless you really care about ISWFContext implementations and the application domain issues, ignore Alex's post about embedded fonts.
It is a nice discussion about the inner workings of the domain and security of how this works but it is imho broken and is an insane concept to require an ISWFContext to just use an embedded font. It also breaks runtime CSS loading that has fonts embedded in it because the Flex compiler (last I checked) was also busted – it doesn't include the function necessary to create within context the font embed so that it may be applied. You can't create an ISWFContext with a compiled CSS file.
These issues were introduced in the last Flex SDK beta before FB4 was released in final form. There are multiple bugs logged against the issue of applying loaded font files to TLF text (in short, SWFContext is broken and you have to override GlobalSettings.resolveFontLookupFunction to return embedded or null, all the time).
Here's some more details to get you started - with links to at least one of the SDK bugs that were filed:
http://forums.adobe.com/message/2656152
For example:
import flashx.textLayout.elements.GlobalSettings;
import flash.text.engine.FontLookup;
GlobalSettings.resolveFontLookupFunction = function makeValid():String { return FontLookup.EMBEDDED_CFF };
And you may need to do this after your font is loaded:
yourTextBlock.textFlow.invalidateAllFormats();
Disclaimer: I haven't seen the latest Flex SDK release to see if this was fixed. I have an AIR application with native process that builds embedded font SWF files for use and stub code for FB4 usage but haven't updated to the latest SDK yet to see if it's working properly.
Anyhow, your best bet is to look at the Flash Builder forums. I think this is/was a Flex team issue, not TLF.

• Can we apply embedded font in extension to a text layer of Photoshop ?

Hi All,
I have embedded some fonts into my Flex extension panel of Photoshop.
Can I apply these fonts to any text layer?
Kindly help URGENTLY!
Thanks,
D.A

Here are 3 options for future reference:
1. With the setup you've described, apply a Match Move behavior to the text and make the rectangle the source. Change the Transform parameter to Mimic source. This way you can still adjust the text postion as needed, but the rectangle will drive the animation.
2. Use a group to do the animation. Put both your rectangle and text in the same group and animate the group's postion.
3. Use the Link behavior.
Each of these has it's advantages depending on what you need.

• Apply embedded fonts to special characters in spark textArea using tlf

By setting fontfamily directly to textarea in mxml fonts get applied to special characters. But using tlf and setting fontfamily it does not apply.
style.css ::
@font-face
src: URL("/Assets/Fonts/GandhariUnicode-Bold.otf");
fontFamily: "GandhariUnicode-Bold";
embedAsCFF: true;
snippet of source code ::
textArea.textFlow.interactionManager.selectRange(beginIndex, endIndex);
var textLayoutFormat:TextLayoutFormat = getTextLayoutFormat();
textLayoutFormat.fontLookup = FontLookup.EMBEDDED_CFF;
textLayoutFormat.fontFamily ="GandhariUnicode-Bold";
textLayoutFormat.renderingMode = RenderingMode.CFF;

Please try the code as follows.
(1)

textLayoutFormat.renderingMode = RenderingMode.CFF;
textArea.textFlow.hostFormat = textLayoutFormat;
textArea.textFlow.flowComposer.updateAllControllers();
Or (2)
[Embed(mimeType="application/x-font", exportSymbol="GandhariUnicode-Bold", embedAsCFF="true", fontWeight="bold", source="Assets/Fonts/GandhariUnicode-Bold.otf", fontName="gandhariUnicode-Bold")]
var GandhariUnicode-Bold:Class;

• Regarding Embedded fonts

Hi All,
I have applied embedded fonts in my application using CSS file.Issue we are facing for components like Titlewindow,Panel and Alert in which Header style is not reflecting with the embedded font family instead maintaining with its default font.I have also mentioned the CSS sample below for ur reference.@font-face{
src:url("Assets/verdana.ttf");
fontFamily: TTVerdana;
advancedAntiAliasing: true;}
Application {
backgroundColor: #FFFFFF;
backgroundGradientColors: #FFFFFF, #FFFFFF;
fontFamily: TTVerdana;
themeColor: #FFFFFF;}
Note : I also tried out fontfamily style specific to TitleWindow,Panel etc in CSS as mentioned but still no effect
TitleWindow {
fontFamily: TTVerdana;
fontSize: 11;
borderAlpha: 0.44;
headerHeight: 20;}

Hi Jin-Huang
But when I use Simple ASProject with SDK 4.1 then it works fine but when I create Flex project then it give error
with SWFContext.
I think it's a issue of swfcontext or AS comunication with Spark components.
Please let me know if any solution.
Thanks

• Unable to load embedded fonts in TlF / FlowLeafElement

dears,
I use TextFlowUtil.importFromString and FlowLeafElement to make each some text have its own style, every some words have diffirent color, fontFamily, fontSize....etc
that is done here in the text attribute in this xml tag, and TextFlowUtil.importFromString and FlowLeafElement make taht perfect:

The problem is that i need to embed fonts, by this fontFamily="Arial" you can set font name which you want, but if i set font name which is embedded it won't work, like : fontFamily="ttf"
the embedded code is :
[Embed(source='/Resources/majallab.ttf',fontName='ttf',mimeType='application/x-font',embed AsCFF='true')]
var font1:Class; //This is only used to compile the code
I use Flex SDK 4.5,
what can i do ?
Thank you in advance,
amt

To use embedded fonts in a Flex component, the fontFamily for the component needs to be set to an embedded font that is in the same SWF as the other embedded fonts in the TextFlow. See my blog for more details

Thank you very much,
I finally found the solution using the swfContext :
use namespace mx_internal;
myTextFlow.swfContext = ISWFContext(getFontContext("myFontName", false, false, FontLookup.EMBEDDED_CFF));
It works fine both with a dynamic component like RichEditableText or a dynamic textflow with a ContainerController.
Thanks

• Module not unloading if embedded font was ever used

So, I have a test app that uses modules with the font embeded. Using ModuleManager I am able to load up the module. Once I call IModuleInfo.factory.create(), I am then able to setStyle("fontFamily", "BPDiet") and the font does show up. The issue I am now having is that once I have used a font from a module, even if my TextArea is no longer using it (I even tried removing the textArea, and replacing it with a new one), the module will not unload.
I read through this "What We Know About Unloading Modules" and I think I am not leaving any references around.They are loaded using the load() defaults. There is no code (that is used) in the module. The modules are not being added to the display, so they never receive focus.
Note that I am unable to run the profiler as suggested in the article as I don't have the premium Flash Builder 4. <grrr>
Note that the first module that is loaded, I can never get to unload, even if I never used the font embedded in it, but all subsequent modules will unload, if I do not use the embedded font. I can live with the first one being pinned as long as I can unload the others that are not in use.
Here is the code from one of my modules:

<mx:Module xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx">
<fx:Script>

import spark.components.TextArea;
[Embed(source='assets/BPDiet.otf',
fontName='BPDiet',
mimeType='application/x-font')]
public static var BPDietNormal:Class;
public function GetSampleTextArea():TextArea {
var SampleTextArea:TextArea = new TextArea();
SampleTextArea.text = "Test BPDiet please!";
SampleTextArea.setStyle("fontFamily", 'BPDiet');
return SampleTextArea;

</fx:Script>
</mx:Module>
And here is the App that is loading and using the modules:

<s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"

<s:TextArea id="sampleTextArea" fontFamily="{fontNameForSample}" text="Some Sample text for your viewing"/>
</s:VGroup>
</s:Application>
A couple things to note; I am calling System.rc() in the unloadCurrentFont() method just to speed up seeing the SWF unload in the debug console. The DoNonImportantWork() is there to just cause some events to happen and to create some objects that will need to be GC'ed. It also let me know that the fonts are not getting registered in Font.
I'm going to have 30 fonts (and more, that designer is busy) that I will need to be able to dynamically load, but right now, loading them with CSS style modules blows up after about 15 because style modules register the font so I cannot unload the CSS swf.

To help eliminate the question of whether the TextArea is being held by something else, I have removed it from the MXML, and now programatically create it. That did not help.
So, I got the trial version of Flash Builder 4 installed on another machine in the office so that I can use the profiler. (The profiler is pretty cool by the way).
After a lot of profiing, I found four paths to the module's FlexModuleFactory.
Two of those paths go to EmbeddedFontRegistry, whose data is static. I could get into it and remove font entry and free up the moduleFactory from there. This is a hack, that entry in/on EmbeddedFontRegistry.font should have been cleaned up by the code removing the fontFamily from the TextArea. (Note that EmbeddedFontRegistry is marked [ExcludeClass], which I assume means I should not really be messing with it.
The other two I cannot get to as they are anonymous. They also don't appear to be referenced, as the Object References shows them both as GC root objects. Here is a screen shot:
I did a search through the sdk code and 'fbs' only shows up as a parameter on the init function of various Marshal support classes, but is not used in the init()
Anyway, these references to the FlexModuleFactory do not get held if I do not use the embeded font in the module.
Here is the updated code:

• Issue with adobe reader extracting embedded font

I am unable to open a PDF file using adobe reader (I have Windows 7).
The error message states: cannot extract the embedded font HDJDOS + A Caslon Pro-Regular. Some characters may not display or print correctly.
Any suggestions on how to correct this?
Thanks.

Can you open Reader by itself? If so, try disabling Protected Mode [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].

• Cannot extract the embedded font 'F2'. Some characters may not display or print correctly.

This question was previously published but no answer has been found.
Error message is :
"Cannot extract the embedded font 'F2'. Some characters may not display or print correctly."
Many pdf documents display this error with Adobe Reader 8.1.0. We have errors for embedded fonts 'F0','F3','F7' and so on.
It looks like a Adobe Reader bug because :
- All PDF files can be opened with Acrobat Reader 5.0.5, 6.x and 7.x, can't be opened with 8.1.0 version.
- the 8.1.1 update removes only the bug for 'F0' error message (issue #1572280).
The solution :
- to publish a 8.1.2 update to fix this important bug
- is there a registry parameter or tool option to disable the checking added in 8.x version of Adobe Reader ? The 8.x version catches more errors to be compliant with Adobe specification but Adobe reader must be
compliant with all documents generated by third party products.
This Adobe Reader bug applies to Windows Vista, XP Pro SP2, 2000.
Thx,
Regards

Just to let you know, for anyone else with this problem. I had this problem occur on a MAC when you tried to do save to PDF in excel. This was all happening at the point of generation of the PDF in my case.
The fix was to delete ALL the microsoft preferences, but perahps only the font cache needed to be deleted.
I deleted the following areas from the local users userprofile on the mac. On windows, I would probably log in as a differnet user to try to see if the problem just exsists for one particular user.
Here are the sections I deleted:
Library/caches/metadata/Microsoft*
Username/library/preferences/com.microsoft* ( and anyhting with microsoft in it)
I did leave the entourage settings though.
hope it helps someone with a similar issue.

• This component requires that the embedded font be declared with embedAsCFF=false.

I'm getting the following warning for my project.
"warning: incompatible embedded font 'MyFont' specified for views::MyViewInnerClass0 (MyViewInnerClass0_61) . This component requires that the embedded font be declared with embedAsCFF=false."
Here's what I have in my style.css file.
/* CSS file */
@namespace s "library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark";
@namespace supportClasses "spark.globalization.supportClasses.*";
@namespace views "views.*";
@font-face {
src: url("assets/MyFont.ttf");
fontFamily: "MyFont";
advancedAntiAliasing: true;
embedAsCFF: true;
@font-face {
src: url("assets/MyFont.ttf");
fontFamily: "MyFont";
advancedAntiAliasing: false;
embedAsCFF: false;
The 2nd font section I have is what is suggested as the fix in most places but that isn't working out for me. I wonder if I'm missing something else.

I tried changing the name and it didn't work. Tried all sort of combinations too and none worked. Tried a different font and that didn't work too.
Turns out the problem wasn't in the declaration of the fonts but where I was using it.
I initially had the font declared globally
global
fontFamily: DroidSansMono;
I saw that, in your comment you had mentioned "..then apply it to the component" so I applied the font to the label component
s|Label
fontFamily: DroidSansMono;
and boom.. no warning. Problem solved.
Thanks so much.

• This component requires that the embedded font be declared with embedAsCFF=true.

Hey all,
I fall into a small problem with fonts embedding. In my application I have embedded over 50 fonts and all expect one works as expected.
That one shows an error "warning: incompatible embedded font 'Algerian-CFF' specified for spark.components::RichEditableText (RichEditableText310) . This component requires that the embedded font be declared with embedAsCFF=true."
I have been looking all over the internet for similar problem, without success. Why this font is not working while all the rest does? Any clues?
/* CSS file */
@namespace s "library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark";
/* embedded font */
@font-face {
src: url("ttf/ALGER.ttf");
fontFamily: Algerian-CFF;
Thanks.

Thanks,
My issue is not to embed a font twice. Let me describe the issue so this will helpful.
I have embed a fonts like below code.And apply LucidaBlackletterSpark font for spark component but it gives me error like
"warning: incompatible embedded font 'LucidaBlackletterSpark' specified for spark.components::RichEditableText (RichEditableText2301) . This component requires that the embedded font be declared with embedAsCFF=true".
But Font have already embedAsCFF property true. I am not able to find the solution why it is give me this warning.Due to that i am not able to embed a font.
@font-face {
src: url("assets/fonts/LucidaBlackletter.ttf");
fontFamily: LucidaBlackletterSpark;
embedAsCFF: true;
@font-face {
src: url("assets/fonts/LucidaBlackletter.ttf");
fontFamily: LucidaBlackletterMX;
embedAsCFF: false;
