Unable to verify permissions

Hello,
Yesterday I did a combo upgrade to 10.5.4 on a Macbook 3,1. Before doing the upgrade I attempted to verify the permissions on my hard disk but received an error.
2008-07-15 23:13:53 -0400: Verify permissions for “Macintosh HD”
2008-07-15 23:13:54 -0400: Reading permissions database.
2008-07-15 23:13:54 -0400: Reading the permissions database can take several minutes.

The underlying task reported failure on exit.
2008-07-15 23:13:54 -0400: Permissions verification complete
This only takes a second to happen so I don't think the permissions are ever checked. I attempted to boot from the Install Disk and run the permissions verify from there but get the same error message. The drive verifies with no problem, but the permissions verify can not run.
I attempted to install 10.5.4 anyway against my better judgment. Everything went fine until it attempted to write the receipt. The installer locked up solid for over an hour and I couldn't do anything but power off the machine. Luckily everything came back up with little to no issue, but I'm concerned with what I'm seeing in the install.log file.
Jul 15 22:07:07 Fiji installdb[899]: -[IFDBD_SchemaA updateFile:uid:gid:mode:]: database error (1): SQL logic error or missing database

This is in the system.log:
Jul 15 23:06:21 Fiji com.apple.SystemStarter[40]: The process has forked and you cannot use this CoreFoundation functionality safely. You MUST exec().
Jul 15 23:06:21 Fiji com.apple.SystemStarter[40]: Break on _THE_PROCESS_HAS_FORKED_AND_YOU_CANNOT_USE_THIS_COREFOUNDATION_FUNCTIONALITY___Y OU_MUST_EXEC_() to debug.
Most of these messages repeat over and over, so I'm a little concerned. Everything seems to be working, but because I had to restart the system during the upgrade, I'm worried something did not complete. This is the third time the system has locked up during an installation so I know something isn't correct. I've attempt to boot in to single user mode to run the fsck, but it says everything is fine and you can't use disk util to repair permissions in single user mode it seems.
Does anyone have an idea of what these messages mean?
thx

Hello and thank you to all who replied.
I wanted to give a quick update on what I found on my Macbook. I before I continue, I'm going state that I don't recommending doing what I did unless you are extremely comfortable with Unix/Linux.
After seeing the responses that I had to reinstall the OS I got really curious to what the Mac was doing, so I called up a friend of mine who is a linux admin. I too use linux a bit, but not at his level. He recently purchased a Mac as well.
He is new to the mac and hadn't heard of checking permissions before updates, so I explained the whole scenario. Once he understood the basics we got to work.
What we found is, there is a permissions database on the mac located in /Library/Receipts/db called the a.receiptdb. One his new Macbook Pro the file was owned by _installer and group wheel. On my Macbook the file was owned by root and group admin.
Changing the owner to _installer and group to wheel allowed the permission verify to run but reported some issues. Looking more deeply at the permissions, I also noticed that not only were the directory permissions for the db directory different, but also /Library/Receipts/boms directory and most of the pkg directories. The owner and groups didn't match up. Now I'm not saying mine were wrong, but they didn't match his newer install. So I changed the permissions on all of these files and re-ran the the permission verify.
It found a ton of permissions that were not correct. On top of that it found a lot of files that were OS and Unix binaries that had been modified so it wasn't going to change the permissions on any of them. I'm guessing this happened because the combo update didn't complete properly the first time.
After matching up the permissions, I allowed it to repair the permissions then re-installed the combo update while watching the console install.log. Everything finished with no errors. After the reboot, I ran the permission verify again, it only came back with 2 permission differences. I repaired those and was done.
I'm still getting the:
Jul 17 23:16:24 Fiji com.apple.SystemStarter[27]: The process has forked and you cannot use this CoreFoundation functionality safely. You MUST exec().
Jul 17 23:16:24 Fiji com.apple.SystemStarter[27]: Break on _THE_PROCESS_HAS_FORKED_AND_YOU_CANNOT_USE_THIS_COREFOUNDATION_FUNCTIONALITY___Y OU_MUST_EXEC_() to debug.
On boot up in the system.log. Apparently something is starting up and getting stuck in a loop at start up so I'll have to see what that is, but overall everything seems to be working much better. I may do a re-install just to be safe at some point, but right now everything seems fine. I just need to track down what is getting stuck on startup.
It seems all of this was caused because the permissions were wrong on the files that verify the permissions. I'm kind of confused on why some of this is an issue because you enter your admin password before the update, which I thought meant that the installer will run as root, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Thx

  • Verify permissions failed: Framework unable to communicate with the Disk Management daemon

I'm experiencing problems with the Disk Management daemon on my MBPro Retina running Mountain Lion 10.8.2. I discovered it first when I tried to enable file vault and received the "Framework unable to communicate with the Disk Management daemon" error message.
So I started up Disk Utilities (which started fine) and tried to run Verify Disk Permissions. It failed with the following errror message:
"Verify permissions failed: Framework unable to communicate with the Disk Management daemon"
So I booted in to safe mode and tried Verify Disk Permissions again with the same results.
So I booted in to the recovery partition to run Disk Utilities. It ran fine and the Verify Disk Permissions found some errors which I then fixed.
I re-booted normally but am still experiencing the same behavior.
I have turned off my anti-virus (Sophos) to no effect.
I checked the console and found the following message:
12/6/12 3:27:02.828 PM Disk Utility[157]: *** WARNING: Method userSpaceScaleFactor in class NSWindow is deprecated on 10.7 and later. It should not be used in new applications. Use convertRectToBacking: instead.
    Thoughts or suggestions?  Thanks!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Disk Utility unable to Verify/Repair Permissions since this week's update

Hey there folks- I am experiencing some software problems with certain apps not launching (I understand it is an issue with QT now but am not clear on how to revert... Help?) and naturally panicked a bit.
I went into Disk Utility and tried to Repair Permissions.
Starts checking and then claims to lose connection and that I need to quit it and relaunch. This, of course, tells me that I am about to corrupt the disk and will "pay" for it (not seriously but feels like it!).
Anyone know what I can do to fix this as I really cannot, this minute, afford to reformat as I am working flat out with the machine.
So- review- unable to repair permissions and sometimes the machine runs slower than usual on the net as well as no longer launching some applications. Missing a few too but I can live with that!
    Any help VERY gratefully received.

Oh dear lady upstairs! Sorry to not have responded sooner- I never got the message that you had answered me... Bit odd that!
OK- thanks for that. I do so like understanding what I am doing and, more importantly- WHY!
Will do and let you know if that sorts matters...
As for QT- I hear tell that it can interfere with the running of applications and I certainly had a lot more than just Disk Utility fail on me. Stuff APPEARS to launch and then just stops after a few bounces of the icon on the dock.
Of course that TOO began only after the update.
I have to say- if it weren't for your calming influence I'd have freaked by now. I mean- how can we trust the updates if they cause such agro?!
    LOL!

I am looking to solve without buying DiskWarrior unless only resort.

So it looks like  solved it for now I will update later. What I did was after starting from the install cd for the 10.6 system I ran from terminal ran:
    diskutil disablejournaling /dev/disk0s2
    diskutil disableownership /dev/disk0s2
    diskutil repairPermissions /dev/disk0s2
then i closed terminal and then when to disk utility and chose to repair disk with results all was fine. Then ran repair permissions and got similar results from terminal function next I erased disk and then chose to restore from time machine and it is now restoring! yea!

  • Unable to verify burn, and DU stalling?

    Heres my problem(s). (semi related).
I wanted to install XP on my 2007(8)? Mac mini. and i have done so before. But now here is my problem.
I have a XP iso. So i tried to use DU to burn it to a cd. Well, all was fine until it was done verifying, at this point, it said it was unable to verify (don't remember error, sorry) So, i tried to burn via my New MBP, burned just fine.
Next, i went into boot camp, pert. the drive. gave it 30gigs. When i rebooted, the screen was all black, with a white dash, blinking.
I google this. And people are saying I need to repair permissions. SO i verify permissions and sure enough, need to repair. So, i'm repairing right now, and the progress bar is stalled at 1 min left, (right under the 'i' in 'disk'.) , and its stalled on:
Well, never mind. It was stalled on a warning, but now its log moved, but bar is still stalled. guess ill wait more. but i do have 1 more question.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
    i can has fix?
(incase you don't want to re-read/read)
    1. Possible reasons my Mac mini cant burn anymore? Will not verify and Will not read disk after.
    2. When i boot from my XP cd, the screen is black, with a white dash.
    3. Mysterious DU warning? (see above)
    Any help is welcome <3

  • 'verify permissions' error

    Hello All,
have been following the advice of the MacForums articles on upgrading from Snow Leopard to Mavericks & have so far , probably in reverse, carried out a back up to Time Machine & have just Verified my hard drive = appears ok & finally Verified Permissions where there was a reoccurring error which it fixed on Request to repair but was unable to address the following, whatever this is, outlined below ; FYI I have never as I am completely unable to use Terminal or tackled the Library folder to the affect to make changes, anyone know what the following means & is upgrading to Mavericks still on the table? I've had no issues to date & I will carry out a second back up now that the Start up disk has been Verified before proceeding & awaiting any advice that's out there.
    Thanks everyone.
    Kind regards,
    Capo Dino

ps I've never used remote management, a little weird, no?

OS X Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore
It is an innocuous message you can safely ignore. It will repeat every time you repair permissions.

  • I am trying to get hotmail on my iphone but every time it says "unable to verify account info"

I am trying to set up my hotmail account on my new iphone 5c.  The password is correct becasue I used it on my laptop.  Whenever I try to set it up, it says "unable to verify account information." Does anyone know why this isn't working?

you need to check all the other settings like incoming and outgoing mail server

Maybe you can click on the Reset Password link instead of trying to log in at appleid.apple.com.
I'm not sure if that would work, but its worth a try.

  • I can no longer use my aol on mac mail. When I set up the aol account name and password I get a message that says "Unable to verify account name or password". This is on all my Apple devices. Seems like an AOL server issue but no help from them!

I can no longer make my AOL e mail work with Mac Mail on all my devices. When I try to set up the account and put in the correct aol account and password I get the message "Unable to verify account name or password". I know the account name and password is correct as I can open the AOL e mail page on Safari. I have changed the password, and it still does not work. AOL tech support has been no help. AOL email worked for years but last week due to suspected spam activity AOL locked my AOL account. I got that straightened out but now i cannot set it up on any of my devices: Macbook Air, Ipad, I pad mini and iPhone 6 without that message. I took everything to Apple store and everything is set up correctly on my devices. AOL tech support is no help and keeps giving me different solutions and answers, none of which has worked. Any solutions out there? All my Apple Software is up to date on all my devices

  • Order Canceled: unable to verify information

Placed a $30 order last week.  Cancelled immediately "unable to verify information" after getting the order confirmation.  Spent 45 minutes on the phone to be told, "I don't know."  Shipping and Billing info are correct.  The same credit card seems to work just fine on Amazon with the same shipping and billing information.  Anywho, I let it slide, bought the stuff I needed from Amazon (with the same card and info) and waited on the transaction to cancel from Best Buy so I could get my rewards back.
Yesterday, bought a Nest thermostat for my Father-In-Law.  I used the $25 in Rewards I had refunded from my previous cancelled order.  Bought the thermostat at a great price, used my Rewards, I was happy.  Confirmation email...Thank you for your order......seconds later......cancelled....Unable to Verify info.  I checked all info.  It's all correct.
My wife and I have spent, AT LEAST, 2 hours on the phone this morning trying to find someone that can help us.  We weren't rude or hateful.  We understand it's Thanksgiving-Black Friday-All hell breaks loose weekend.  We have just been asking the same question.  WHY was it cancelled?  AND can we please push the order through while we figure out what's going on.
I have been a Best Buy customer for as long as I can rememeber.  But, the recent hiccups are bothersome...and the fact I have spent HOURS on the phone regarding TWO purchases totaling $230 is disappointing.  Even after telling support that this gift was for my Father-In-Law for Christmas...they wouldn't let me place the order with my credit card...and give me a $25 credit...so I could have peace of mind the order is placed.  Then, I don't mind waiting on a resolution.  But, everyone I spoke to just transferred me to someone else.  I was transferred to Geek Squad TV Repair....we were transferred at least 5 times....and disconnected 3 of those 5.
I know what you're thinking.  We probabaly blasted them and were rude.  No.  We weren't.  It just seems that this is a Best Buy issue and no one knows what's going on.  I've checked the info...I called my Bank....they see the transaction and have no clue why Best Buy cancelled it.
It just loses a customer's trust when no one can give you answers or help.  I was told a Supervisor would call me back yesterday.  No one did.  I finally tried to research the issue and I see MULTIPLE THREADS with this issue.  Maybe you guys know something the DOZEN or so other agents dont.
    {Removed per Forum Guidelines}
Add to the case notes that we decided, after multiple attempts contacting support the past few days, that we chose to buy the thermostat elsewhere.  We just did not want to miss out on the sale price ending 12/1, and did not have confidence this would be resolved before that time.  We asked several of the agents to either push the order through or place the order with a $25 credit, but no one would.  And it was all maybe's regarding whether or not I'd get the same deal when and if this was fixed.
I hope you have the answer, as I would like to use the $25 in Rewards for a future online purchase.

    Hello James,
Learning that an order you've placed has been cancelled is never a pleasant discovery, so I can imagine why you'd be upset. I'd be frustrated too if the same thing happened to me, especially if an immediate resolution didn't appear to be available.
As you may have read in other threads, this cancellation message generally means that something on your order is not matching up as it should. This can be anything from a simple spelling error (or incorrect abbreviation) to the billing address on your BestBuy.com account not matching the billing address for the provided method of payment. This could also include trying to ship a product under a personal account to a business address. Additionally, as explained in BestBuy.com's Conditions of Use, remember that Best Buy reserves the right to reject any order you place with us:
BestBuy.com > Help Center > Conditions of Use

That said, I'd be glad to look into this situation on your behalf. I'll need to gather some information in order to do so, so please make sure to check your private messages when you can. • "iTunes was unable to verify your device" after succesfully completing recovery mode on iPhone 4

I have an iPhone 4 which has never caused me any problems, until i updated to iOS7 it started lagging and battery didn't even last until midday (having it charged 100% in the morning!).
In just a few days it turned off automatically and wouldn't turn on. I googled and solved it by pushing the two buttons together for about 10 seconds. iPhone revived, and all the data was intact though many people states it would've been erased.
The morning after, using my iPhone more carefully not to have it crash again, it crashed. 10 seconds wouldn't do and I gave up, until the day after I found by surprise that the battery had run out and it finally showed some sign of not being completely dead!
I connected the cable to iTunes and pushed the Home button before connecting the iPhone and it entered Recovery mode. Recovery mode was completed and the iPhone had to restart to complete the process. While completing I get the error message "iTunes was unable to verify your device, please disconnect and reconnect your device". And from here I don't get anywhere, so I will probably visit Apple Store and ask what can be done, but if anyone has had the same problem please share any possible solution to this problem!

I had to contact Apple Store and make an appointment. They tried the last step suggested (which I had already tried three times) and stated that the memory had failed. They said it probably failed due to having some small issue already on the phone and then updating to a new iOS.
They could only offer me an exact copy of my iPhone but new for 149€.

  • "iTunes was unable to verify your device" error

    Hi,
I have a first generation iPad that has been working just fine. I decided to give it away, and so I wiped it and set about restoring it to factory defaults.... except, now I keep getting the error "iTunes was unable to verify your device. Please disconnect and reconnect your device. If the error persists, see your local Apple store for assistance." Well, the error is persisting despite disconnecting, reconnecting, attempting to restore several times, attempting to use DFU mode, no matter what I do, I get this error. I did see in a different forum, someone said this suggests the iPad was jailbroken or hacked in some way. So, just for clarity here - this iPad was never running anything except standard iOS. Anyone have any ideas?

Apple's activation servers are down at the moment.  Try again in a few hours (or even tomorrow).

  • How do I get past "Unable to Verify Hotmail Account Information" on iPad2?  Can't retrieve my Hotmail e-mails from my iPad, Help!

Bought a new iPad2 with wi-fi access.  I am at home on my wi-fi network using iPad.  Trying to add my Hotmail account to the iPad so I can retrieve my e-mail messages.  When I try to add the Hotmail e-mail account to the iPad, I select Windows Live Hotmail on the iPad.  I then enter my Hotmail e-mail address and Hotmail password in the iPad.  The iPad then says Verifying.  Then a box pops up saying "Hotmail Account, Unable To Verify Account Information".  I spent about an hour on the phone with iPad support and they tried everything they could to no avail.  iPad support said I would need to contact Hotmail support.  I have learned that Hotmail does not have a support phone number that you can call, only a search area that is of no help.  I am able to log onto my Hotmail e-mail account no problem on my regular computer.  I was able to program my wife's Comcast.net e-mail into the iPad no problem and bring up her e-mail on the iPad.  I can not get past the "Unable to verify Hotmail Account Information" message on the iPad.  Frustrated, want to be able to retrieve my Hotmail e-mail messages from my iPad, please help!  Thank you.

My hotmail was working properly until one month ago , then I do not what happens ... My mistake has been to cancel that account and try to re-load it... I am blocked at "unable to verify account details".
I read and follow carefully all your steps here above but it is not working!!
I also try to ask securiry code to mocrosoft and put it instead of hotmail password when creating new Ipad account but nothing.
I try to go everywhere on microsfot pages and on my mail account setting but I can not find any help from there. From PC is working
I try to choose "other" from the list of account and insert there hotmail account, both indicated adsHOTMAIL or OUTLOOK, but in this case it tells me "username or password for POP3.live.com are uncorrect.... what is POP3.live.com??
I already try everything find in the net here and elsewhere ... I have hotmail account since years can not thik to change it .... Some other help?? Some indication I have not yet try?
