Unofficial chargers causing jerky / choppy / jumpy / inaccurate iPhone touchscreen

Today I finally discovered the cause of an issue that has bugged me for over a year and wanted to share it here. Basically I was having lots of issues with the touchscreen being jerky / choppy / jumpy... It kept being inaccurate, thinking I was tapping in the wrong place, it wouldn't scroll smoothly without jumping around etc etc, you get the idea. I've finally figured out that it only happens while charging and only if I use some third-party (non-Apple) chargers.
It ties in with this archived thread as well - https://discussions.apple.com/message/9832369#9832369 - but the archived thread doesn't specifically identify that the cause is unofficial chargers.
The type of charger causing this issue for me looks like an official Apple one but it isn't. Here's a photo:
I bought a few of these cheap chargers a while back so I could keep a couple around the house and one at work. I frequently use my phone while charging, sat on the sofa, watching TV, etc. Today at work I was using my phone fine, then plugged it in to charge and noticed it started being jerky. So I unplugged it and the problem went away. Naturally I plugged it in and unplugged it again a few more times just to be sure the problem was being caused by this and it definitely was.
It so happened that I had an official Apple charger at work as well, so I swapped over to this (using the same cable) and guess what - the problem disappeared again.
This does not affect all non-Apple chargers though... At home I now have a couple of four-port USB charging units. One from PortaPow and another that is a generic white one from eBay. Both of these are able to charge my iPhone without exhibiting the jerky touchscreen problem. However it's worth noting that both of these can supply decent amps (2.1A, or even more) whereas when I measured the charger shown in the photo using my USB volt/amp meter it was topping out around 0.7A-ish.
Anyway, I hope this thread might be useful for other people who are perhaps tearing their hair out trying to work out why their touch interface is being all choppy and inaccurate. Hopefully I've included enough different words for "jerky" to ensure this thread is found when people are searching for the issue.

I see the same behavior with my iPhone 5 using a Belkin B2E027 4-Port USB Power Charger.  I suspect that this is due to conducted noise on the cable from the switching converter in the charger.  I might try adding a ferrite toroid to the cable to see if that helps.

  • Flash Video Jerky / Choppy Fullscreen Chrome

I've been having this problem for a couple of years using Flash video across ALL websites.  When I play a full screen flash video, the video gets choppy or jerky.  The audio continues perfectly.  I'm a pretty tech and computer savvy person, so I have tried a lot of the fixes I could think of.  I ended up finding one SOLUTION to the jerky video that works EVERY SINGLE TIME.  If I right-click the full-screen video, and allow the settings menu to remain on top of the video while it plays, I NEVER have issues with jerky or choppy video.  If I cancel the settings menu, the jerkiness returns immediately and remains throughout the video duration.  To help diagnose this, here's my specs and stuff I have tried.
    Dell 1764 running Win 7 x64 on a Core i5 processor, 4Gig RAM.
all builds of chrome in the last couple of years, w/ and w/out the included flash (i.e. disabling in about:plugins).
24mbps cable connection, with no buffering issues noted
Cleared cookies, history, temp files, ran anti-virus and spyware.
Have always been up-to-date w/ windows updates.
Fullscreen videos that do work flawlessly:
Netflix using the Silverlight plugin.  Youtube HTML5 videos.  Any DVD's or downloaded videos play perfectly in VLC and MPC.
So, in summation:  Flash vidoes in fullscreen are Jerky/choppy using Chrome browser.  When I right-click and allow that menu to remain on top, jerkiness goes away.  Cancel the right-click menu, problems return.

No worries.  I appreciate the feedback, and just want to make sure I'm understanding the data that I'm collecting clearly.
We're aware that there are random short-lived problems that happen during transitions in and out of full-screen and scrubbing.  We have a number of bugs open on the engineering team around it.  In general, these are usually complex timing-related problem with a bunch of interrelated, moving parts (codec, network latency, buffering, stream quality, hardware, browser, etc).  They're really hard to debug.  It continues to be a big area of focus for both the dev and quality engineering teams, and something we're investing a lot of time and energy into improving.
Also, it's worth pointing out that we test a pretty large matrix of graphics cards, and we partner directly with many of the GPU vendors -- but there's a ton of fragmentation and we can't check every single card that's out there in the world.  If we see a bunch of bugs coming in about a particular configuration, we do our best to track the card down and take a look.
If you find instances where you're able to reproduce playback problems consistently, please file a bug.  Include a direct link to the video/videos that you can consistently reproduce the video problems with, and include the output of dxdiag (or the graphics card info from the System Information tool on Mac).  OS and Browser versions are also very useful.
I'm not personally involved in the work around PPAPI for Flash Player, but we have a whole team working on building a great experience for Chrome and Pepper.  Disabling PepperFlash where it's enabled will generally cause Chrome to fall back to the stanadard NPAPI-based Flash Player instead.  Keep an eye out for announcements about preview releases for Flash Player on PPAPI -- I'm sure the team will appreciate your feedback once they become available.

Basic troubleshooting steps are restart, reset, restore.  If these are tried and you still have problems then you have a hardware failure and will need to have your phone replaced by Apple.

Can different chargers hurt the ipod? (Ex. iphone charger used on a ipod classic)

I am pretty sure that it does not harm the ipod. I have been using my iphone charger on shuffles, nanos, touches, and ipads, kindles, and more  ever sense the iphone came out and i have never had any issues with any of them. You should be fine using them.

No. You must restore it to factory settings, without restoring the backup. There's no other way to clear your phone.
If this seems unpleasant to you, keep in mind that 1) the prolonged effects of having malware on your phone would be far worse, and 2) you brought this on yourself by engaging in software piracy.

  • Are 3g chargers backwards compatible with first gen iphone?

so i know that older chargers don't seem to work on the 3g iphones, but are the newer chargers backwards compatible with the 2g iphones?
i was thinking of getting some after market wall & car chargers for my first gen iphone, but i rather buy ones made for the 3g iphones just incase i upgrade soon (and i don't want to repurchase the chargers)
    anyone know?

well I'm aware that certain first gen chargers won't work with the 3G, but i've come across this 3g car charger which specifically states it's not compatible with a first gen iphone. strange.

unfortunately it doesn't say if it's the same case with their 3g wall charger.

  • What is the temperature limit of the finger to work on iPhone touchscreen? I'm asking this, because I've noticed that when my finger gets too warm (about 104oF) the screen of my iPhone 5 doesn't recognize its touch. Thank you.

What is the temperature limit of the finger to work on iPhone touchscreen? I'm asking this, because I've noticed that when my finger gets too warm (about 104oF) the screen of my iPhone 5 doesn't recognize its touch. Thank you.

I understood. Emphasizing that this is still a guess, when you touch the screen it compares your fingerprint at that time to the one you originally recorded. The fact that the finger is warmer may have a small effect on the fingerprint making it appear different than the original colder one. Temperature differences cause things to expand and contract and that may be having an effect on the comparison. You could try recording a fingerprint after doing what you are doing and then see if it will be recognized when you do the same thing to log into the phone. I know that prior to iOS 7.1 for a few minutes after I would wash my hands the phone had difficulty recognizing the fingerprint. Don't know if it was temperature or moisture that caused the temporary change induced by the hand washing. That improved with version 7.1 I think.

  • IPhone 4 has serious jerky choppy performance since uploading IOS 5.  Scrolling through photos jerks; Roadmate voice commands are broken in a staccato fashion; Screen game play is very jerky  - Everything is choppy!!

I have read many messages regarding choppy and jerky performance going back to 4.3.1  Has anyone else noticed this with the recent IOS 5 upgrade?  Any recommended solutions??
    Thanks,
    Mike

    No genius here either...
    The Basic Troubleshooting Steps are:
Restart..  Reset..  Restore from Backup...  Restore as New...
    Restarting your device
    1)   Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider.
    2)   Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Follow these steps to reset your device
Note: Reset your device only if it is no longer responding and the steps above do not work.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

  • Jerky/Glitchy/Choppy Scrolling on iPhone 4

I'm wondering if anybody can offer an insight as to why when I scroll through contacts, text messages, ipod etc that the scrolling is very jerky. It's completely lost it's smoothness and it's quite unpleasant to work with. Have tried to find forums on this but the ones I've found haven't been helpful. All the software is up to date. Is it a firmware issue? Any help would be really appreciated...

Have you tried hard resetting your iPhone? Hold down the power and home buttons, ignore the slide to power off message and release when the Apple logo appears. If this does not resolve it, I recommend you restore the device in iTunes.

  • Choppy/Jerky Animations on Verizon iPhone

*I'm having an issue with my new Verizon iPhone, at random times for example when closing an app or scrolling through settings the animations and scrolling become very choppy and unsmooth. I was wondering if this is a normal thing or something I should be worried about.*

I am experiencing the same issue. It usually happens when I open or close an app. I have read that it could be iOS 4.2 related but not sure. My buddies iPhone 4 with the 4.1 software never has choppy animations.

  • Quicktime 7.5 causes jerky iMovie playback

When - oh when will Apple fix the "Jerky iMovie Playback Problem" caused by Quicktime 7.5?
I would love to see a response by somebody from the Apple Corporation, or are they
too busy with the iPhone and iPod?
    Hank

    Hiya,
and hello from London. Just a thought: you could post Apple feedback of the problems you got:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/feedback/
It might be an idea to put more technical feedback in there (e.g. open applications/utilities/console and see what happens, when QT IS actually jittery.:~/
Also compare that with what's happening in activity monitor (e.g. are the processors running unusually high, compared to other QT use? or is the memory low? or is harddrive space low?).
If this is a bug that needs fixing, by giving the technical data to apple, this can be used to issue a fix.

  • PP CS4 - Sudden Jerky/choppy preview

    Hello,
I'm working on premiere for few months now, and everything worked fine.
The "common" folder started to fill up and got to 65GB, so I deleted it.
After that - every high quality/heavy video I put in premiere is jerky when playbacking it (without rendering, and obviously after I waited for premiere to confirm the file).
It wasn't like that before, it was smooth (when no heavy effects are on),
But now I cant watch most of the videos - I get about 1 frame per second, the playback is just unwatchable.
Please help, this is very urgent
    Thank you

oh... its fixed ...whew...that was scary...I'm glad its Okay now.
what can cause this ??  well.... how many hours of free time do you have ??  The list is endless.
you didnt get the dreaded 'blue screen'... the dreaded blue screen is when you get NOTHING on screen...just blue color.
what you got was a message, and a very detailed one. It told you that your computer was having a hard time reading and writing to some portion of your hard drive ...maybe..
I say " maybe" cause often those warnings are not exactly accurate in terms of the real underlying problems..the actual "cause" of the problem.
if you check out your xp event logs and error messages and warnings etc you might be able to begin to pinpoint problems. that stuff is in my computer, manage , system tools, event viewer, and then there are 3 areas to check..usually system and application being the most relevant.
however, if its your hard drive you do need to deal with that, probably by getting another hard drive so you have more room , and then split stuff up...put program on c drive, project on D drive, resources on E drive, etc...
Then you also have to make sure your indexing service is off for all drives, and follow steps to maximize your computer for "editing" ( tons of messages here about that stuff in the hardware forum etc )... regarding your scratch disk sizes how to set all that up..
But basically, that screen you got is telling you that your computer is very close to being unhappy and not working anymore...even though you think it's fixed.  Stuff doesn't get better all by itself like magic...unfortunately.
    good luck !
ps..when you post stuff, keep letting people know whats up cause otherwise we waste time answering stuff that is no longer a problem. Also, if this is now a problem that has been answered and so on, please mark it answered ...that way others dont waste time seeing if they can help out ...  we are just users like you and like to help one another... is fun !
    good luck !

  • My 4th generation iPod touch has jerky/choppy/jittery scrolling on pretty much any app and text...

As a recent buyer of an apple product I have to say that I am EXTREMELY dissapointed with the company...
How ironic is this. my phone service has ended just a couple days ago and a screen issue rises.
Let me tell you: I take the utmost care for my iPod and just recently the scrolling on it has been very jerky and inaccurate.
Needless to say, Apple has dissapointed me, with this $250 product.

If you choose to have Apple replace the iPod for you, see this paeg.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/
Otherwise, you can also send it to a third party repair company who can actually replace the screen at a much lower price.  Google will be your friend on this one.
