thanks Terence.
Couple of updates: Post my earlier update - I shutdown and restarted and then again opened iPhoto in normal library. It opened fine, and imported photos - it worked fine.
I also did what you mentioned - created a test library and imported few photos - it worked fine as well.
not sure what was/is the core problem here !!!
thanks for your inputs.

How can I prevent iPhoto from launching when I insert an SD card
I recently upgraded to a new iMac retina and am having trouble disabling iPhoto from launching when an SD card is inserted.
I have gone to iPhoto setting and disabled iPhoto from launching when a camera is connected.
I have also gone into image capture and selected no application as the hidden option for SD card actions when inserted.
Unfortunately the issue persists... two questions: can I do a terminal level disable to prevent iPhoto from launching or can I remove iPhoto from my computer?Have you tried this?
Open the Image Capture app
Select your SD Card
Click the little widget in the bottom right corner of the window
Select the program to launch, or "No application"
it worked for me -

I am using the latest version for MacOSX but this happened a couple days ago with an older version of Firefox as well. Is this some kind of bug? How do I fix this bug? I can't get Iphoto to launch after I tried to move it to a seperate hard drive?
I cannot get Iphoto to launch. I tried to move the program to a seperate hard-drive to save space, and then deleted it from my mac. Now neither program wants to open! I have upgraded and tried to re-install it, but nothing works...
you clone a system to a new and LARGER hard drive, you don't drag application packages.

Disable iPhoto auto launch w/ plist?
I know you can disable iPhoto auto launch from the Image Capture app, but I would like to know where Image Capture saves its preferences so I can disable it by editing or replacing a plist.
I need to change preferences on a whole lab of Macs, and I would prefer to do it remotely on all of them at once if possible.
I looked but I can't seem to find where the preferences are saved. If anyone knows or knows of an easy way to do it let me know. Thanks.
Power Mac G4 Mac OS X (10.4.7)It seems to be this file:
"/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.ImageCapture2.00039343a1a8 .plist"
At any rate, that is the file that contains this entry, as the sole thing in the file:
HotPlugActionPath String /Applications/Image Capture.app
So you can try adding/deleting this file and see if that will do what you want.

Any way to stop iPhoto from launching every time iPhone syncs??
The subject posting says it all: Is there any way to stop iPhoto from launching every time I synch my iPhone? I've clicked this and that, checked this and that. I must be missing something so if someone could help, I thank you in advance.
OR ... delete the photos from the phone after they were imported. If you want those photos to be on the phone, set them to import during a sync. Getting them out of the iPhone's "camera roll" album is the key here.
An easy way is to set up a iPhoto album called "for iPhone" or something. When your new photos are initially imported into iPhoto they will be in the "last roll" smart album. Select them from there and drag them into your "for iPhone" album and make sure that album is selected to sync. Either check the "delete photos after importing" box in iPhoto or delete them manually from your "camera roll" album on your iPhone after the sync. iPhoto will not automatically open until you take new photos.
Remember ... setting Image capture to not open iPhoto, as well as the setting iPhoto to delete photos after importing ... will apply to your camera or memory card device as well.

How do I stop iphoto from launching itself every time I use my laptop?
How do I stop Iphoto from launching itself every time I use my laptop?
Some possibilities:
Right click on the iPhoto icon in the Dock. Is Open at Log In Selected?
Check your System Preferences -> Accounts -> Log In Items
Is there a camera or anything that your Mac might think is a camera (flash drive, USB Hard Disk formatted to a FAT format, phone) attached to your Mac. If so, disconnect it. If you don't want to disconnect it, set iPhoto to "Do Nothing" when a camera is attached. You do this in the iPhoto Preferences. -
How do I stop iPhoto from launching every time I sync my iPhone?
I have looked for something in Preferences on both my iPhone's PHOTOS tab as well as in iPhoto but cannot find where to tell whatever I need to tell to stop iPhoto from launching automatically every time I hook up my iPhone to my Mac to sync. This is really annoying and I'd so much rather just handle anything like that via the iTunes interface vs. another window/program that has to operate to deal with stuff on the iPhone. It's INelegant at best and just simply a pain in the arse at worst.
You mean I can use this Image Capture thing for moving stuff from scanners as well?
You bet. Some don't prefer using iPhoto to store all imported digital camera photos or any such application (not sure why but to each his/her own) so Image Capture can be used instead which is a simple import/transfer application. Using Image Capture, you can download some or all, remove photos from the camera after the download process, select a default download location or create a new folder in the location of choice and use a chosen automatic task such as crop to a 4' x 6' which occurs after the download process is complete.
A nice simple little application which has some juice for those who don't like using iPhoto or similar type application.
I'm in the habit of rooting around the applications folder and utilities folder with a new Mac purchase so I was aware of Image Capture but I've always preferred using iPhoto for my digital camera import process. -

How to stop iPhoto from launching when Kodak Photo CD is inserted...

In the Image Capture General Preferences, I have "No Application" chosen to open when a camera is connected. This preferences, however, does not effect Kodak Photo CD's. iPhoto still launches.

Image Capture and iPhoto automatically launch...
Hi:
I am using OS X Yosemite. Whenever I connect a camera to my computer, iPhoto automatically launches. Since I don't use iPhoto, I have to close it before I can download my photos to Adobe Lightroom. in iPhoto—> Preferences—> General I have it set to "Connecting Camera opens: No application" But iPhoto launches anyway. How can I make it stop?
Whenever I connect an iOS device to my computer, the app Image Capture launches. I don't need this to happen either. How can I make it stop?
Thanks!
JanetOpen image caputre. Plug in the device. Select the device in the list. Open the icon at the bottom of the window and set the device to open no application or choose the application you want it to open.
Repeat for all devices you plug in to that computer. -

Thanks!Hi Paul,
To do this just open Image Capture, open its preferences and then under the general tab you can select the option of "When a camera is connected, open:"
Just select no application and that should do it.
