USB Flash drive mount on Mac 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard)

Hi, All my HP v250w cannot mount on my MacBook (OSX 10.6.8), i can see them on my USB (system info) but not in finder, so i can't read / write any data on them.
they function normally on my friend's Macbook Pro with Lion OS (10.7)
is there anyway i can make them function normally on my macbook?
Thanks in advance

Pharmineous, welcome to the forum.
According to the Specifications for the drive it should be plug 'n play with Mac OS 10.3 and above.  Therefore, it should work without any problems with your Macbook.  The key word is "should".  Now, why doesn't it work for you.  It may be that there is a conflict with other programs.  Since it works with your friends Macbook Pro, it should work for you.
Was there software that came with the drive?

  • Finder stall after wake from sleep w/USB flash drive mounted

Has anyone else experienced this? iMac works flawlessly while USB flash drive is mounted UNTIL iMac sleeps. Then as soon as the iMac wakes from sleep the finder is non-responsive (perpetually spinning beach ball) and other apps slow to a crawl and become non-responsive as well if they need the finder (i.e. to save, etc.). This only happens when the USB flash drive is mounted.
Trying to force quit (relaunch) the Finder does not work, I always have to perform a hard restart.
I have an external FireWire hard drive that works beautifully and does not cause these same symptoms.
    Any ideas?

umm.. don't let the computer go to sleep with your jump drive connected? The mac will usually take a few seconds to get his gear together after waking up from a sleep sounds like he is having to gather additional things since the jump drive is in there. I don't have a REAL solution except don't let Mr. Mac sleep with the jump inserted....

  • USB FLASH DRIVE WORKS ON MAC BUT NOT ON WINDOWS... CAUSE I ERASED IT IN MAC

I decided to take my work flash drive home to work on a file. At home I saw that some weird files were on the flash drive and wouldn't delete, so I decided to save my files on my Mac and erase the USB flash drive. I selected the flash drive (by the way it's a 2 GB flashdrive) and I used the SECURITY OPTION 35 PASS ERRASE. Format: MS-DOS (FAT).
Everything was fine until I took my flash drive to work and plugged it on a Windows XP Computer and it appeared as Drive E I think and when I tried to open it it asked me to format it. I risked it and clicked OK and it said that I didn't have sufficient rights or something.
    SUMMERY:
2 GB USB ERASED USING MAC DISSK UTILITY
EVERYTHING FINE UNTIL I PLUG IN THE FLASH DRIVE IN A WINDOWS
WINDOWS ASKS ME TO REFORMAT FILE
I PLUG IT INTO A MAC COMPUTER AT WORK AND IT DOES WORK
IF ANYBODY KNOWS HOW DO I FIX THIS THANKS?

The drive is probably now formatted for a Mac only file system. To format for a PC:
Insert the drive in the Mac and start Disk Utility (Utilities folder).
Select the drive in the left column. Be sure to select the drive (all the way to the left) not a volume (indented below the drive name).
    Select the "Partition" tab.
Set "Volume Scheme" to "1 Partition" (not "Current" even if it's already one partition).
    Click the "Options" button".
    Select "Master Boot Record".
    Click the "OK" button.
Enter a volume name (all uppercase).
    Set "Format" to "MS-DOS (FAT)".
    Click the "Apply" button.

  • Clear default usb flash drive selection on mac os x?

    Hey ,
I'm using a VMWARE program and running Windows 7 on my macbook .
The first time i connected my usb flashdrive , the windows system was running and i got a pop up asking me if i want to open the new drive using windows 7 or mac os X , i choose the Windows and checked the "always use this choice".
Now i can only use my flash drive on the Mac OS.
Any why to clear the default selection and use the flash drive with my Windows 7 system ?
    Thanks !

You will be able to open it if you make it a .iso
image. There is software available for both OSes to
open and browse/modify a .iso image file. I do not
know how well any of them use passwords for the
    images.
    Maybe it's winiso
What I would recommend is using Winrar
(http://www.rarlabs.com/) and just using a compresses
and encrypted file that both OS's can manipulate.
With winrar you create an archive and then each time you want to edit a file you have to extract it, modify it and then reinsert it in the archive.
What I was looking for is something more user friendly.
Images created with mac, protected with a password, are ok but are not compatible with windows.

  • USB flash drive security on mac and windows

    Hi
I've got an USB flash drive and I would like to secure it so that data on it will not be accessible unless a password is provided.
The point is that I need to use it on both my macbook with tiger OS and on another PC with windows XP.
The USB flash drive is a sandisk cruzer titanium that comes with U3. Originally I was using an U3 protection that asks for a password when the flash drive is plugged in.
U3 is not supported by MAC so I had to disable the password protection to use it on my brand new macbook.
    Appreciate any help

  • USB Flash Drive Compatibility between Mac and PC?

    Hi,
I own an iMac 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM and just got a new job where I'm using a PC. At work they all use flash drives to transfer data back and forth to computers etc. Would a flash drive (let's say a Kensington since that's the brand I've seen the most at work) that works in a PC at work be compatible with my iMac at home. I know Kensington makes them compatible for Mac and PC but just wondering how the data would transfer onto my Mac. Is it readable, does it depend what I'm transferring over?
    Message was edited by: spiralgirl

    {quote} guy there said they haven't yet perfected the flash drives to switch between Mac and PC and work well so I was a little surprised at this. {quote}
That is pretty much a standard reply you get from someone that doesn't know anything about macs. I've used those things for years without any problems, but I have been using my ipod as a disk lately because I always have it with me. It's also another less thing I have to buy and carry around.

  • If i use a usb flash drive which is both os and windows compatible can i transfer files from my mac to a windows pc using the same usb flash drive?

if i use a usb flash drive which is mac os and windows compatible can i use it to copy files from the mac to a windows machine. i have to do some training abroad and wnat to take the files on a usb from the mac but they will only have a windows operating system available to me.

Generally, it's not the flash drive that makes it compatible, but the formatting used on it.  In Disk Utility on a Mac, the format is called MS-DOS (FAT).  In Windows, I believe it is called FAT32.
A USB flash drive formatted that way should be readable and writable on both Mac OS X and Windows.  But you may want to try a "trial run" before relying on it for the trip.

  • Copying files from iMac to USB flash drives

I am having problems copying files from my iMac computer to USB flash drives. Sometimes, I get the error message: "Sorry the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred (Error Code -50)."
How can I solve this problem?
This error message does not happen everytime but rather occasionally. Most of the files I am trying to copy to my USB flash drives are MS Word documents. I have tried using various brands of flash drive, but I still get this error message.
I use my USB flash drives for both Mac and Windows OS computers. For my 2GB Kingston Data Traveller flash drive, I checked its product datasheet on the Kingston website, and it says that it is compatible with both Macintosh and Windows OS, and that I can use it for cross-platform PC/Mac file transfers.
I also checked the Properties tab for this flash drive, and the File System for the drive is listed as "FAT."

    Hello Stedman:
I am pretty sure that these files were not open in MS Word when I tried to copy them.
I only get this error message/code for a handful of MS Word documents; the rest of my MS Word documents were copied successfully to my USB flash drive.

  • Booting from Win 7 bootable USB flash drive?

What I thought would be rather simple has turned really frustrating, I wanted to install Windows 7, on my iMac, on a different partition.
I don't have a retail DVD but I have the product key for activation. So I downloaded the ISO Image from Microsoft. First I burnt it into DVD-R and booted it. It ended up getting stuck on 0% in Expanding Files. Then I tried to 'burning' it into USB and make it bootable, but I could not boot the USB flash drive on the Mac. How can I boot it? (I used the Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool)
    Thanks

I don't know about the answers to your issues, as I have never tried any disks that large.  But it would probably be wise not to mention that you are trying to do this on a non Arch system, as now I am pretty sure you will not recieve the help you desire.
I don't mean to say that I encourage you to try to dupe our community into helping you with your debian system by not mentioning it.  But it seems pretty silly to come to the Arch threads looking for debian support, even if it is a universal (os independent) issue.

  • USB Flash Drive is seen by Mac but will not mount

I use an HP 32GB flash drive, formatted exFAT, to transfer files. My Windows PC and other MacBooks in my house running older Mac OS X versions read this flash drive just fine. This flash drive used to show up on the desktop of my newest MacBook Pro 15 (late 2011) too.
However, after upgrading to 10.7.5 I experienced numerous problems (Time Machine, etc.) and the USB Drive fails to mount onto the desktop or be recognized by any application. I cannot get Apple's Disk Utility to recognize the flash drive either.
    Interestingly enough
    1. The System Information window of my MacBook Pro shows the USB drive when it is attached. The Mac even knows it is an HP 32GB drive. But Disk Tools does not see it, I cannot format or read it in any other way on this Mac.
    2. when I launch Windows 7 OS through Parallels, then install the USB drive, these applications too fail to recognize the flash drive. But if I pull out the USB flash drive then a screen appears for a split-second, as though somehow the MacBook Pro knew the drive had been pulled.
Moments ago I downloaded the OS X 10.7.5 supplment "Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)", but while that may have fixed Time Machine, I see no changes to the USB drive recognition.
    Any ideas?
    MacBook Pro (15-inch Late 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.5)

iDVD '11 works on Mountain Lion.  You just need to get an old iLife '11 DVD.

  • Mount a USB Flash Drive

I am running a 1998 iMac with a PowerPC Processor. It has MacOS 8.5.1. I have a PNY 2 GB USB Flash Drive. How do I mount this.

The link says it won't work with G3(which is what I have).
Where does it say that? Both the 8.6 update and the USB Mass Storage Support 1.3.5 are OK for a 1998 iMac (with 8.5.1 right now). Since the USB Mass Storage Support 1.3.5 requires 8.6, install that update first.
Oh, and I forgot to mention the only means of transporting data is through a CD(which I can burn).
Yes, you can transfer files on a CD. Use a CD-R (not CD-RW).
If you are using a PC for the downloads, make sure that the files are kept unaltered. Do not try to decode the MacBinary (.bin) on the PC. Once on the iMac, use an appropriate version of StuffIt Expander (which, hopefully, is there already) for the decoding (drag the .bin file onto the StuffIt Expander program icon). Otherwise, special software (such as TransMac) will be needed on the PC in order to correctly handle Mac files.
The iMac is not connected to the internet.
If necessary, that can be resolved within minutes. The iMac has a built-in modem for a dial-up connection, or it can be connected to a broadband router by means of an RJ-45 Ethernet cable.

  • USB Flash Drive not mounting

I recently bought an 8GB USB flash drive, which came formatted FAT-32. The drive was put into a friend's Windoze laptop and had a couple GBs of jpeg and avi files transferred to it. I took the drive home and put it in my white MacBook (4GB RAM, Leopard 10.5.8) and it would not mount. I put it in my G4 MacMini; likewise, it wouldn't mount. I am assuming it also won't mount in all my older Macs with USB, either. I returned it to the Windoze laptop, and it ALSO wouldn't mount this time, except as one pulled the flash drive from the Windoze laptop, for a second a window with the flash drive's contents would flash on the desktop of the laptop. Originally, the flash drive was "properly" ejected from the Windoze laptop.
On the MacBook, both Disk Utility and DiskWarrior do not see the flash drive when it is in the USB port (either port). However, Apple System Profiler does recognize when it is plugged into the port. ASP returns the following information when the flash drive is in the high speed USB port:
    "Flash Disk:
    Product ID: 0x3234
    Vendor ID: 0x1221
    Version: 0.00
    Serial Number: 10000000000003CF
    Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
    Manufacturer: USB2.0
    Location ID: 0x24100000
    Current Available (mA): 500
    Current Required (mA): 100"
Anybody have any idea what is the cause of my problems with the flash Drive and how I can get the drive to mount? I don't think the problem is a function of my Apple hardware, as my USB ports on all my machines function with everything else USB which I have without problems. Thanks.

I know that, but I have USB in my older Macs, too, and besides, some of the most knowledgeable people are in these older forums!!
I've come to the conclusion that the drive may be defective, too, but I was just looking for some possible angle which I'd not already considered. I tried reformatting, but without the drive even being recognized, it isn't even possible to reformat. I can only get ASP to indicate that it is attached.
    Thanks for your try!

  • USB flash drive won't mount

I have a strange problem with a USB flash drive which refuses to mount on the desktop of my MDD FW800. It registers in System Profiler but not in Disk Utility. I can't get it to mount using Terminal either. The Terminal screen says it has mounted but it doesn't appear on the desktop and I can't access it. However, if I do a restart with the the drive plugged in, it does mount. If I eject it and then try to plug it in again, it won't mount! Very frustrating.
It works fine on my Powerbook and my Digital Audio so it can't be the drive itself that's the problem. Not quite sure when this started but it may have been after I installed a PCI USB2.0 card (a Ratoc Rex-PCIU3). The card itself works fine with other USB products and I don't have any deep sleep problems with it either. I'm stumped.
    Any suggestions anyone?

    Hello rickame
Click on the desktop then go up to the menu bar and select Finder / Finder Preferences / General and make sure the box's are checked for Hard disk, External disks, etc.. then reconnect the drive. If you still don't see it on the desktop it may have been improperly disconnected from the iMac while mounted, look to see if it show's up in Disk Utilities and the System Profiler on the USB bus. If you are plugging it into the keyboard, try one of the USB ports on the back of the iMac or a powered hub. There also could be a conflict with other USB devices, try ejecting and disconnect things like an iPod, a printer/scanner or camera, then restarting the iMac and connect only the Flash drive.
