Use as Home Server

Can i use the Mac Mini as a home server? and do i need the Server version or is that more for office and multi users?
i was thinking of using it to drive a home network, plug in some drives, and share stuff around the home. As i'm plugged into iphones and apple TV at home, this may be a better way top do it as those items wil pick up this Mini instead of using something like a qnap which it appears, although has ituens server, wont get picked up by Apple TV.
thoughts? any links to read would be good
Also is there a multi drive enclosure i can to plug into this as i need one with 2x3TB drives...

no one?

  • Open Directory Usefulness for Home Server

I'm using Mountain Lion Server primarily as a web server, but as a retired tech writer/programmer I like to fool around with things in case I ever need to return to work. I set up the Open Directory master as part of the installation process, but I'm not sure how useful it is for me. When my site was hosted on Mobileme I got about 30 visits in a day max, and about 1 comment every year or two. So my questions are:
How useful is the Open Directory for me, and is there any point in keeping it turned on?
Is it useful for people outside of my LAN?
Any additional comments, or information are appreciated.

  • Anyone Using A Home Server ?

I have a home server which I have connected to FIOS and setup NAT to enable a blog, FTP etc over the internet, but nobody across the WAN can access the pages.  I know I have the server setup correctly (cos it worked with my last ISP), so it has to be the Verizon router.  I have setup another HTTP port (cos Verizon blocks port 80), but still nobody can access.  I even had a FIOS network techy remote in to check the router, but he could find nothing wrong.  As Princess Leia said "You are my only hope" ....

Humm...  It's hard to say what the problem is but maybe try enabling remote administration to the router.  If you can connect to the router outside of your network then it tell me that it's something with the port forwarding setup.  (If you do setup remote Admin. make sure to turn it off when done.)
I logged on to my router and noticed (and forgot) that you'll need to enable "ICMP Echo Requests"in order for ping to work.  Enable that and see if ping requests are being returned outside your network.

  • How do I secure my web browsing on public wifi using a home server?

    Hi,
I have a Mac Mini and an iPhone 3GS running iOS 4.3.2.  The Mac Mini currently acts as a media centre, running OS X 10.6.7.  It is permanently connected to the internet.  I have a static IP address (though goodness knows my ISP insists it changes every 15 days lol), and an Airport Extreme Base Station (Gigabit).
I'd like to secure my web browsing when using public wifi by getting my iPhone to pass all data over a secure connection via my Mac Mini.  Might someone tell me how to do that?  I'd rather use software already included with OS X where possible.  (PS: I know that my data becomes clear-text again once it leaves my Mac Mini).
I'm also thinking of implementing a proxy server on the Mac Mini (Privoxy) to help manage ads and cookies on my LAN.  Would it be possible to set it up so that my iPhone could take advantage of that proxy and the secure connection when using public wifi?  Cos that'd be great!  Cut down on my bandwidth costs!
    Thanks everybody!!
    Scotchy

I don't know iOS I am using. How do I find out?
I have web history but only one weeks worth - can you increase how long it keeps the info before discarding?
I definitely don't have advanced settings and I'm definitely using an iPhone4
I also want this info to keep track of my internet usage to know which websites are chewing up my data allowance.
    Any help appreciated!

  • TS130 and Windows Home Server 2011

    Hello,
Just got a New TS130 1105B2U and am curious if anyone has used Windows Home Server 2011.  I did not see it on the list.
Also, I notice there is a 4TB cap on the drive support.  Is that only for the hardware RAID support?  Is it possible to install an additional drive controller in conjunction with the motherboard or is the cap based on the BIOS?
I looked around the forum but could not find an answer.
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Hi Paul,
Lenovo never announced support for Windows Home Server 2011.  As it was a consumer-oriented OS, it was not in-line with our strategy for those systems.  WHS2011 runs on core of Windows Server 2008 R2 and is the close cousin of Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials, both of which are fully qualified for use on ThinkServer TS130.   You should be able to find compatible drivers at support.lenovo.com using either of those as your match to get your server functional.
Support note: Lenovo would be unable to provide any level of support for the OS.  This does not impact your hardware support.  I'm going to guess you are familiar with these types of restictions since WHS2011 is only sold as an OEM licence.
As to your question about drive capacity, that must be an old revision of the manual.  Lenovo has since annouced 3TB drives, making 6TB the maximum capacity by the system given Lenovo ThinkServer-branded options in a 2-bay system.
Below are the drives available for ThinkServer TS130:
    0A89470
ThinkServer 500GB 3.5" 7.2K Enterprise SATA 6Gbps Cabled Hard Drive
    0A89471
ThinkServer 1TB 3.5" 7.2K Enterprise SATA 6Gbps Cabled Hard Drive
    0A89472
ThinkServer 2TB 3.5" 7.2K Enterprise SATA 6Gbps Cabled Hard Drive
    0A89478
ThinkServer 3TB 3.5" 7.2K Enterprise SATA 6Gbps Cabled Hard Drive
    Cheers!

  • Windows home server access

I can't access the computers at a remote location that uses Windows Home Server.
The remote location (my office) has a static ip address and is running the original home server software.
    I'm running XP.
When I connect to the Home Server Web Site using Firefox the "computers" tab is missing. When I connect using Explorer the "Computers" tab is there.

  • Windows Home Server vs. Windows Server 2012

I have used Windows Home Server 2011 but I have problems with connections and backups. Is Windows Server 2012 more reliable to use with computer backups?
    Nikorios

    Hello,
i suggest that you ask in
http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-us/home?category=windowshomeserver about the backup problems you have.
Also for the connection problem ask there. For me this sounds as a configuration problem.
I am pretty sure that the Server itself is able to run backups and connections.

  • Starting a Home Server

I am wanting to set up a home server (at my house) using a mac mini and an external hard drive array. I want to use the home server for a lot of different things including but not limited to:
#1. Backing up computers to the server.
#2. Using the server to store music and movies on for streaming and remote viewing.
#3. Running my mail app on the server 24/7 so rules run instantly on all my devices.
#4. To run a video surveillance software 24/7 using cameras around the house.
#5. Remote view all my files, music and maybe videos if really needed (knowing that download speeds for music and movies might be slower).
#6. Remotely backup my servers information to a external hard drive array at my dads house.
#7. Allow my dad to backup his server to my external hard drive array the same way.
I know this seams like a lot of work and money, but we are not interested in using a cloud service for this.
I guess what I am looking for is some tips or help as i get started.
Is there any applications that people would recommend to make the process easier.
As far as a hard drive array, what do you suggest (8 Bay).
    Backup software?
Will the mac mini be powerful enough to do all this?
One last thing. I haven't boughten anything yet. I am wanting wait a few more months to see if apple releases a new mac min.
    Thanks.

Play with OS X server on your laptop but don't plan on migrating the settings is my advice. (There are tools, but you may be better off learning how it works).  Ideally servers have static IP's, unique names & it makes more sense to me to start fresh when the server arrives.
I'd test on a secondary installation of OSX so that the laptop can still be used after you stop testing OS X server.
As for offsite backup. I'd also suggest you look at Arq - it backs up to Amazon S3 or Glacier.  Chronosync may be another option - it could sync between you and your dad once you have setup a secure way to access his server.
Personally I would ignore Back To My Mac - you need a recent Mac to use it & you end up leaving your Apple ID scattered all over the place if you use it in public (ever noticed how the Apple ID gets into the iCloud settings after you login to one service). Other services like GoToMyPC, LogMeIn can allow remote access via a browser on many OS's.
However since you are also wanting full access to the file shares you may be better suited with a VPN into the network. A VPN joins your device from the internet into the local network, so you can use whatever app or services that work on the local network. So you can use VNC/ARD iOS apps like 'Screens' to control Macs. You can also use the Screen sharing application on OS X to connect once the VPN connection is running into your network. Or VNC on Linux/ Windows machines.
I don't think it is a good idea to setup the VPN for access from the Apple store or Library - you should really think about what level of access you want from these places - it's far safer to restrict to a few devices.
The VPN is probably best run from your router - if you have one that is capable. The server can run it too as a service, however it's better if you are not 100% reliant on the server for the outside access - when it goes off the remote access would go down too.
Seek out posts by MrHoffman in the server forums and there is some good advice concerning DNS on his site… you will want that working correctly if you plan to have outside access.
    http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com
P.S. You seem to want to run Mail.app for your email rule processing - is that correct?
That is a poor idea because the app needs to be running so that means the server must boot, auto login & launch Mail - that is a gaping hole for any server, it does require physical access, but it's not great for security should the server be stolen.

  • How do I add my phone's Wi-Fi Mac address to my home server so that I can use my home Wi-Fi with my phone?

Hello. I am using an Android cell phone and, though the phone sees my home server name and accepts my password, it won't connect. I understand that I may have to add my phone's Wi-Fi Mac address to my home server in order for it to allow my phone access, but I have no idea how I might do that. Could someone help me with this? Thank you.

You need to log out of iMessage and Facetime, make sure your number is correct in Settings/General/About, then log back in again to send a new activation request.

  • Advise Requested - Building a Home Server using Solaris 10

I'm currently a Wintel sysadmin, and I'm relatively new to Unix. I know the basics, and I have been reading up on it. I'll be taking a the 200 level Sun class in August or September. I'll be working with Solaris on an increased basis at work very soon. Since I've been thinking of building a home server for some time I thought it would be a good opportunity (and challenge) to teach myself Solaris by building a server with Solaris 10 for Intel processors.
I would like to setup a server with a RAID mirror. It's mostly going to be a Samba file server, Apache web server, and backup server for all of my home Windows Vista PCs. I'll likely put in two 1 terabite HDDs in it. I might also use it as a VPN server for my home network eventually as a I learn more.
Does anyone have suggestions they could give me on hardware? I prefer to build an ATX compliant clone.
So far this is the motherboard I'm considering:

ANY ADVISE would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Change your SSH port to something other than 22! Make sure your ssh keys use passphrases. You can setup keychain (ssh-agent) on the server and clients to keep keys in memory if you desire without constantly retyping (and for automated backups).

Im having massive issues with my email... I cant receive emails for my work email... was working perfectly and now just wont connect, i assume that I need to use my home wifi as the outgoing server?? Please help

For your work email, do you use a well known server or do you use their own server? Their server IMAP and SMTP addresses might of changed or you entered them in wrong. It might be something with your router but unless you blocked every incoming connection, then it should work. I would talk to your tech guys at work to see if it is on their end.
Hope this helped a bit, Sean

  • Can I sync Bookmarks from my Windows Home Server? I have a Shared folder called Favorites I use with IE9

I have my "Favorites" (Bookmarks) saved in a Shared folder on my Windows Home Server v1. I would like to use them as my Bookmarks in Firefox. Is there a way to do this, with or without the Sync feature?
    Thanks

On iOS 5+ the photos will be sorted by their 'data modified' field, so you will need to adjust that on them to get them into a different order : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4221
Or there are third-party photo management apps such as Photo Manager Pro which allow you to change their order within the app e.g. by name, date, or you can drag them into your own order
