Use my user on one machine while someone else is on it?

Hi, just wondering if this is possible.
My kids have taken over my iMac LOL! and I am wondering if it's possible for me to login into it via my Macbook Pro and use my user on that machine while they are doing their thing, effectively having two users being used at once. Is this possible somehow?

Sorry maybe I wasn't clear enough, I use file sharing all the time so I know about that, what I want is to be able to actually use the Imac while my kids are on it, basically like having 2 users at once, because I only run certain programs just on that machine I want to be able to login and use the machine while they are still using it. I think this may be possible via vnc or something.
So basically my son is using the iMac playing a game but I am
Also logged into the iMac using the machine, so simultaneous users on re machine at once.

  • How to create an default profile for every user on one machine? Deployment of configurations?

On firefox 3.5.X i can copy an configured profile from an user-folder to the programm folder of firefox. \mozilla firefox\defaults\profiles.
After an new user log in to the machine the default profile will get the actual profile of the new user. With all bookmarks, configurations and so on.
But this doesn't work with the firefox 3.6.10? What changed? What will be the way i can get an default configuration for every user on one machine? I want to deploy the firefox with an default configuration in our enterprise? Why does the behaviour change?
    What to do?
    Thanks...

No - there are no missing data, because nothing will be copied. The profile - folder does not work.
There are the standard first start behavior.
There might be another trick? Hint? Todo?
    Thanks.

Can you check the server log file for more details. The server log file is located in the <domain-home>/servers/<server-name>/logs directory.
There probably something wrong with the log rotation or something similar. Usually when certain files that are created during runtime belong
to a certain user, other users do not have rights or they must belong to the same group.
Also note that the messages are only info messages and are not really the cause.

  • Easy way to migrate users from one machine to another?

I have an iMac lab where students have their own local accounts. The machines are bound to W2k Server with AD. New school year, new seating charts, some users must move. Is there an easy way to migrate a user and all their stuff from one machine to another? We do have Remote Desktop BTW. I'm not finding an obvious answer so I guess there isn't but I sure wish there were. I suppose they could copy anything they want onto the server. set up a new account on the new machine and pull it all back off the server, but that's not "easy".

    Hi
+The machines are bound to W2k Server with AD.+
This could be a telling statement although without further information it would be hard to say?
What I'm assuming from this is that current mac clients are bound to Active Directory. This would mean that user accounts exist on the Server and not locally. In which case there would be nothing to transfer other than the local admin account - again assuming you want the applications installed on the current client macs transferring over to the new client macs.
To be honest it would be easier and less hassle to create a new local admin account and install compatible software fresh. Use the same tools you used to 'bind' the old client macs to Active Directory for the new client macs.
+We do have Remote Desktop BTW+
You could utilize this to (a) name all the new mac clients with appropriate hostnames and (b) 'bind' new mac clients by issuing dsconfigad from the command line. If this seems like too much hard work then you could simply exercise your legs and walk round each one in turn.
Even if your current mac clients are configured with Mobile Accounts (locally cached network accounts) this would still not be a problem as you can manually or automatically sync the locally cached networked home folder back to the server and then log in with that account again on the new mac clients. The home folder should then be cached locally.
This assumes you've configured Directory Utility in the appropriate way.

  • Sharing iPhoto library among multiple users on one machine

Take mercy on a newcomer to the Mac ...
Having recently acquired an iMac I'm now trying to set up iPhoto 8 so that the same picture library is accessible from the three user accounts I created on the machine, for the three members of the household.
I've seen some postings on this issue, which suggest rather convoluted solutions, such as using an external hard disk. I don't want to buy an external disc for this purpose; I just want to figure out a way to put my pictures in one place, and one place only, where I can organise and change them from my user, and where the other two users have at least read access.
I have tried putting my pics in the shared folder, and redirected iPhoto there from my user, which worked fine. But then from the other users I get error messages that they don't have the required priviliges.
    Grateful for any advice!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Easy: there's no need to move the library at all.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.

  • Help moving a user from one machine to another

We used Acronis True Image to take an image of his machine to move it to the new hardware (so that he would not lose any of his settings). His PC has a fault in the board and while it still functions, we needed to move his to another tower. However, now his install of Acrobat XI Pro is requesting a username and password to continue to use his trial copy. This was not a trial copy and there is no way for me to put his license key in again because it will not let us get any further than this prompt for a user ID. I don't want to have to reinstall this program if I can avoid it.

    Hi jamesy11187,
Was acrobat Registered using this user's Adobe ID? Did you tried signin-in using user's Adobe Credentials?
I would recommend you to refer this link (Find your serial number quickly ) and let me know if it helps.

  • Help please - An email address that I rarely used several years ago got reset to someone else's apple ID in place of the email account they used to create their account. How can this happen?

A friend accused me of switching an email account that I used several years ago to send them photos on Flikr (gmail) for their Apple ID - in other words of.messing with their account. I only used the gmail account to post / send them and several other people photos on a few occasions and have not used the account since. I forgot that I had it. When this friend couldn't access their iTunes account the store discovered that the email had been reset to my very old gmail address. How is this possible? Now, they are accusing me of hacking in although no purchases were made and nothing was done with the account. Still, my reputation is at stake. Could they have done it in error? It looks bad for me. Help please.

I made up the names edward and daniel, it's not actually anyone's email address, so no need for concern.
In practice, I'm sure you're right that I would have fewer problems with a longer, more complex email address. But in principal, the problem remains. I could sign up for the Apple ID
    1234.NoOneWillEverUseThisAddress.5678@gmail
and someone else could sign up for the Apple ID
    1234.NoOneWillEverUseThisAddress.5678+1@gmail
and apple would have no problem with it, even though for all intents and purposes it's the same email address. So the problem is not just the ambiguity of my, to use Dahveed's words, overly simplistic and unsophisticated, email address:
there is a fundamental flaw in the way Apple links email addresses to accounts that allows for this ambiguity.  If they followed the same conventions that gmail did, there would be no possibility of this problem.

  • Can I use one app on one machine while my boyfriend uses a different app on his machine?

If I got Creative Cloud, would I be able to use Audition on my Mac, while my boyfriend was working on Photoshop on his machine. Would one licence cover that, or would we need two?

A single subscription allows you to have two working installations, however only one of those subscription's installations can be in use at any given time.  You would need two subscriptions if you want to use two installations at the same time.

  • How to copy my data as an extra user on another machine while on the road?

    Hi,
Am going on the road for a while, but do not want to bring my valuable MacBook Pro. So I copied my home-directory to the old iBook of my mother as an extra user and I copied her stuff to mine, using SilverKeeper from LaCie, the same software I use to make back-ups with.
But apparently it is not that simple. I can login as the other user on the respective computers and all the data is there, but the system does not know that the data is actually linked to the respective users. I get errors that I don't have the priviliges to access that data.
I need to do something extra to tell the machine that that new user I created is the same as the one who owns the data, but what? Something scary in NetInfo Manager? Could you hold my hand by pointing me to or writing me some instructions?
Surprisingly, no issues similar to mine in the first 100 postings I saw in this forum...
It goes without saying that in a few weeks I want to synchronise the machines again and all should work as before.
Thank you very much in advance!

From an administrator account, open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and run the following:
    sudo chown -R username
where username is the short name of the account you created. Next, drag the home folder into the Terminal window, press Enter, and provide your password; nothing will appear in the Terminal window while the password is being typed. Before pressing Enter, ensure that there are no extraneous characters on the line.

  • Using two users on one computer

    Hi,
I have had only one user on my powerbook since I bought it 4-5 years ago. I recently added a second user to my computer as a way to solve a problem I had with safari taking ages to load. It solved my safari problems but I have a few questions.
When I first logged into the second account, I noticed that things like my iTunes library was not there. I sorted that out just fine, but I noticed that the files in my movies and documents folders were also not there (about 60GB and 5GB for 65GB total). When I logged back into my old user account all the files were present. I copied the 65GB of data to my external drive, and logged into the second new user account.
One problem - when I look at the finder of both user accounts it shows I have 10GB space left on my internal drive. With all the files missing from my movies and documents folders, shouldn't I have 75GB free? Right now, I have copied my documents back from my external drive to the internal drive for the second new user, but I have no space for the movies files.
Now that I have the second user account setup and my safari is working fine, I would like to use only the new second account exclusively from now on - I just need a way to get the movies sorted out.
    Thanks for any assistance.
    Tim

Well if you use the Finder Go menu to Computer, a window opens up double click on your boot drive and then on Users folder, open the other user folder and open Public and drop your files into DropBox
When you do this it will copy them and change the permissions and user assigned to it, so log into the other user and place them into your respective normal folders.
Once you have all your files over and don't need the old user, use System Preferences > Accounts to delete it if you wish, however it's good two Admin accounts on the machine in case something bad happens in the other. Some people for security reasons on use a Standard account for most uses and a emergency Admin account.
One can still do most Admin things in Standard user.

  • Network Drives mounting for all users on one machine

I have a diskless netboot image that I've made specifically to capture the local drive and run system image Utility. I'm trying to "perfect" this image, and I would like to have 2 network shares be mounted automatically when any network user signs in. one to write the DMG to and the other being the NetBootSP0 folder. I'm thinking the way to do this would be a script, but I don't know how to make it, how to set it up to run when any account signs in.
    thanks!

I would also love to be able to do this.
I have my iTunes library in iTunes on a virtual machine on an SMB PC mount. If I bring up iTunes on the MAC to sync my iPods then it will fail unless I manually connect to the SMB mount.
Is there any way to automount an SMB volume at login time?

  • IPhoto '09: Two Facebook users on one machine

    Hello,
My wife and I each have a Facebook account. When I want to upload pictures on my Facebook page, I get an error message saying iPhoto cannot connect to the social network. This happens afer a session where my wife added pictures in her own Facebook account. Then, I have to reenter my Fb username and password in iPhoto.
When my wife wants to upload pics to Facebook, she has to deal with the same situation.
Is there something we're not doing the right way? Can't we just provide both accounts' details in iPhoto and live a happier life???
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the reply.
I'm sure there would be a better way to ask an user to provide the necessary authentication information, instead of the actual error message...
Maybe someday Apple will consider the fact that more than one member of a family can use a computer and online services.
But I appreciate the reply. Thanks

  • Multiple users on one machine access iPhoto. Can I switch from external drive to partition?

Multiple users share my iPhoto.  My iMac has a 1TB internal drive. I have a 250GB external that I've been using for iPhoto.  If I create a partition on my iMac's main drive to use for iPhoto, will this work exactly the same as it does now with a physically separate drive?
I used to do this with ACLs, but for some reason that solution doesn't work for me with the new iPhoto.

Yes. You don't need ACLs just set the partition to ignore ownership and permissions.

  • Issue with authentication of users of one domain while logging on to EPM/HFM(we have 3 domains in total)

    EPM Version - 11.1.2.3.500.7
We have 3 domains and users are authenticated via the Active Directory, the users of all the domains are able to log on to EPM except one Domain.
    What may be the reason?

Did anyone encounter this kind of Issue? Any help ?
    1) The Error what the users get :

    2) Error Admin gets when he is trying to search the users in shared services Error what Admin gets :

We encountered this issue when the User DN's password was changed or when the id was moved to a different folder within Active Directory.

  • Moving users from one machine to another

I am trying to move users from a Solaris 2.6 box to a new Solaris 9 box. I tried moving /etc/passwd /etc/shadow and /etc/group to the new box, but when I try to login I get the following error in /var/adm/messages
Mar 17 17:10:15 host.name sshd[1573]: [ID 800047 auth.error] error: Could not get shadow information for NOUSER
I also tried running pwconv to make a new shadow file from the passwd file.. no good.
How do I move these users to this new machine?

You shouldn't really have overwritten the whole passwd / shadow / group files - did you back them up first?
If so, reinstate them and then just copy the entries you require.
You'll also need the home directories for each user - if they're all in the same place, eg /export/home then you could tar it up and copy it over....
    tar cvf /tmp/home.tar /export/home
    compress /tmp/home.tar
copy /tmp/home.tar.Z to new box and untar it.
