Use of command tunnel path-mtu-discovery

Hi Everyone,
Need to know why we have to use the command tunnel path-mtu-discovery if we have GRE tunnels at both ends?
Also can the same command be used if we have GRE over IPSEC VPN?

It forces unreachables to be sent should we exceed MTU, rather fragmentation to occur.
And yes it applies to GRE over IPsec and is quite a good feature in most cases.

Cisco LWAP in FlexConnect mode uses two Capwap channels:
• CAPWAP control traffic—Identified by UDP port 5246
• CAPWAP 802.11 traffic—Identified by UDP port 5247
For some reason I would need to route user data ( UDP port 5247 ) through other WAN path with lower IP MTU, say 1326B, different from the WAN path used for Capwap control traffic ( UDP port 5246 ) that has say 1500B MTU.
Seems the process is that the AP finds the IP MTU through the control Capwap channel, sets Capwap Path MTU to 1485B and uses it as a maximum also for the packets routed via UDP port 5247. Because some IP packets sent via UDP port 5247 might be larger, means over 1326B, the AP gets fragmentation needed and DF set unreachable ICMP from the router and sets its Capwap Path MTU to 1325B. After a while the AP sends 1485B IP packet through UDP port 5246 and resets its Capwap Path MTU to 1485B and this repeats.
Correct me if I am wrong and the process works different way. This is what I am reading from Wireshark sniff.
I would like to avoid this and also other potential troubles while having the two separate WAN paths with different MTUs.

Change the initial AP 1485B test packet to something lower, like 1325B. Means the AP would not try IP packets larger than 1325B. I tried to change MTU on BVI interface on the AP, this works, but unfortunately is re-written to default after AP reload.

Persuade the AP to use UDP port 5247 for the path MTU discovery process rather than UDP port 5246.
Unfortunately there is no way for me to do this on some other network device between the AP and WAN , like on a switch. It would be optimal, but no way.

Johannes, the best approach in most cases where your transport network, due to tunneling constraints, must deliver a small (<1500B) inner IP MTU to its clients, is to use the TCP MSS Adjust feature.
With TCP MSS Adjust, the network hacks the MSS values reported by the TCP endpoints at connection establishment time. E.g. let's say that the TCP endpoints have an IP MTU of 1500B, and therefore want to use an MSS of 1460 (assuming IP/TCP headers of 40B.) So each end reports an MSS of 1460 in their TCP SYNs. But the network changes the MSS fields in these SYNs to, let's say, 1260 instead. This causes the TCP peers to use an MSS of 1260 (MTU of 1300) for the rest of that connection.
MSS Adjust is in IOS, so a good place to configure it is on the default router for the wireless clients' subnet. In 6.0, CUWN also supports MSS Adjust - you can configure it on the WLC, and it will push the MSS adjust config out to the APs.

Now, TCP MSS Adjust only affects TCP connections, not non-TCP protocols such as UDP. Those protocols would need to rely upon either IP PMTUD (RFC-1191 etc.), or some protocol-specific discovery mechanism, to avoid IP fragmentation. Now, CUWN is not going to send a "DF Set but needed to frag" ICMP error to a wireless endpoint, since it's not a router. You could configure your routers in the vicinity of the wireless clients' network with small MTUs, so that they would generate the needful ICMP errors, so that PMTUD could happen. But in practice, UDP endpoints rarely need (or take advantage of) PMTUD ... so you should be able to get away with just using TCP MSS Adjust.

This sound like a firewall issue. I would start by disabling the firewall and seeing if you can connect. If this works then you know where the problem is,

Using UNIX command to copy desktop files/folders

Hello All. I need help using UNIX command(s) to copy text documents and or folders from my lab computers to my desktop at home. Since I have such a slow connection, I think this will work best. I need help with the cp command and the path mostly. Since all files would be in folders on the desktop (including documents (that "missed" the folders), I believe I could simply copy desktop contents? Thanks, J Langlois

What you want to do is SCP (secure copy) your documents to your remote host.
send this command to the computer with the documents
scp ~/Desktop/FILEOR_FOLDERNAME USERNAME@REMOTE_COMPUTER:~/Desktop/
Replace all the stuff in UPPERCASE with the correct vales for your situation.

I would like to know whether it is possible to send CSV file stored in application server to some email ids using OS Command process type.Using APD a file will be generated at a particular application server path.That file around 2 MB needs to be sent to endusers mailbox.

For sending mails from the app server you will need an SMTP setup in the application server.
If you have a UNIX app server there are native mail programs that you can use. You will need to write a shell script for the same and include that into your process chain as an OS command.
However the same cannot be said of a Microsoft servewr system where the process would be different.
You can however instead of e-mailing look at ftping the file to a common location that the users can take form instead of flooding mailboxes with a 2 MB file everyday or periodically. FTP is also easier to achieve using the OS command.

Can't use "java" command

I just can't use the java command...
The paths have been set and everything should work...
If I just type "java" (without the "") I get:

And if I type "java Oper" (It compiled normally and worked on my school computer) it gives me this error:

It works everywhere but on my computer...
Oh, and I have Java Builder 3 University Edition installed. When I use that to compile + run my program, it works perfectely... I just can't use "java" in command prompt. I have a Windows ME.
Another note, this may be related: I can't use certain Java applets on my computer, like the IRC applets for example. I tried it on both Netscape 7.01 and Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106. It displays the same kind of error, the Exception in thread "..." java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: ... .
And I've already tried uninstalling + reinstalling. Any other suggestions?

start -> run -> cmd
(if it doesn't open command prompt, then try command instead of cmd)
once you have reached command prompt, then you change to some empty directory where you would like to create java or class files. (use cd command for that)
once you have reached that directory, type: notepad Hello.java
(it should open notepad, and it should prompt you a question if you want to create file Hello.java (since it didn't excist) ... click yes)
in notepad type the following:class Hello {
public static void main(String[] args) {
System.out.println("Hello");
}once you have written that into notepad, then click File and choose Save from there.
now you may close your notepad.
now go back to that command prompt and type in command dir Hello.*
it should lis you all Hello.* files, and Hello.java should be one of these.
now, when you have seen that in your current directory a Hello.java does excist, you may type javac Hello.java
if it does compile whitout any errors then everything is OK so far.
type again dir Hello.*
now you should see two files, Hello.java and Hello.class
if you now saw that Hello.class was in the current directory, you may type the following command: java Hello
it should display a String "Hello" on your screen.
if it doesn't work, then you have problem with java not working from commandline (some classpaths are wrong or unset or smthng similar)
if you suspect that something doesn't work, then always test it with simplest task.

Using terminal command to set apple display factor

I have been doing support for a friend and we have run into a problem with Outlook 2011 for Mac since we upgraded to Mavericks.
In the old version I was able to use the command defaults write com.microsoft.Outlook AppleDisplayScaleFactor 1.25
Now this command no longer works.
The approach has been documented since early 2011.

As this has been a minor issue that I have somewhat obsessively been pursuing an answer for....
The above command DOES infact change the value, however it never actually effects the GUI.
You can easily confirm this by running a before and after
defaults read com.microsoft.Outlook AppleDisplayScaleFactor
It should return a 1 (or rather 1.0) before, and then a 1.25 after, or whatever value you changed it to via your defaults write command [sorry, don't post here really and dont know how to properly format the command line text]
I've tried running this command as the current user, in sudo, and even as su - all of which (when pathed properly) change the actual value in the plist, but they never actually make the change to the GUI.
Does anyone have any information as to why this apparently broke in Lion?
Hope this helps someone out there, I've had zero success with this for my users.

Melophage - the single (or even double) quotes had no effect on making the change effective - the value still is "set" to 1.25 with or without those quote marks, it just doesn't display that change in Outlook. Thanks for the thought though, was worthwhile

How do we refer Sub directories using UTL_FILE command

I have created a DIRECTORY My_project using CREATE DIRECTORY COMMAND. This directory is linked to my OS D:\My_project folder.
There are several sub directories under My_project folder such as D:\My_project\Outfile folder which I would like to refer while using UTL_FILE command to process files.
When I try to run the following PLSQL

Tunnel Transport MTU different from Configured MTU

Hi. Did you ever find out the reason and a solution to this problem. I am having the same issue where CUSP decides to change the transport type to TCP (from UDP) when talking to CUCM on certain invites from Acme SBC. On some invites from the same Acme SBC, CUSP doesn't change the transport type and leaves it as UDP.

Printing PDF file Using Shell Command Line

Hello I am writing a program from MicroSoft Excel's Macro that will print PDF files. I have managed to get the program to work but I cannot prevent the file not being opened. Basically the PDF file would get printed but the file would automatically opened up.
I am using shell command line to write this. And this is my code:

I have tried using /h but it still opens the file.

when we want to login sap by selecting proper client & then click on "Login" Button that time Username & password screen apper, I am ok with this.
