Use oracle native sequence

How one can use oracle native sequence in Insert/update in a Toplink POJO?
Thanks in advance...

Just set the Oracle Sequence name as the descriptor's sequence name (ClassDescriptor.setSequenceName()), and configure your Session to use native sequencing.
If you are using JPA you need to use a @SequenceGenerator see,

  • Using oracle db sequence for auto generating of PKs for CMP entity beans

    Hi,
    I have read quite a number of threads about (auto) generation of keys for primary keys for the CMP entity beans.
    My requirement is I am migrating an application deployed on Weblogic to oc4j. The application is using cmp entity beans with auto key generation using a sequence in the Oracle db. This is specified in weblogic-cmp-rdbms-jar.xml file like below:
    <automatic-key-generation>
    <generator-type>Oracle</generator-type>
    <generator-name>REPUSER.DEPT_REPORT_SEQ</generator-name>
    <key-cache-size>1</key-cache-size>
    </automatic-key-generation>
    In the ejb-jar.xml, it is specified as:
    <prim-key-class>java.lang.Integer</prim-key-class>
    <primkey-field>id</primkey-field>
    Now, I need to migrate this to oc4j. Can somebody suggest me options and clarify my questions kindly?
    1) I have read articles that say that in the ejb-jar.xml, we need to specify <prim-key-class>java.lang.Object</prim-key-class> and this will create a column called 'autoid' in the respective entity table in the Oracle db.
    - How can I use this to assign the value to my primary field, say, id?
    2) Now, with the latest oc4j, can I use Oracle database sequence as the key generator for the values of the PKs just by specifying in the xml descriptor ejb-jar.xml?
    2.a) If yes, is there any article that explains with the code?
    2.b) If no, what are the alternatives I have?
    I have read many discussions that say that we can create a stateless session bean that can lookup the database sequence using simple JDBC call to return the nextval of the sequence. The SSB should be called in the ejbCreate() of the entity bean.
    My related question is, what is recommended for oc4j? What are limitations of the various options for the latest oc4j available?
    How should I go about deploying this kind of ejbs in oc4j?
    Any help and pointers are welcome. Please help.
    Thanks a lot.

    Hello ,
    Instead of exposing a get/set method for each arribute of your bean (corresponding to database table) expose only one object.
    For example
    public class CustomerBean implements javax.ejb.EntityBean{
    private CustomerVO objCustomer;
    private String customerName;
    private String customerMail;
    private String customerType;
    public CustomerVO getCustomer(){
    return this.objCustomer;
    public void setCustomer(CustomerVO objCustomer){
    this.objCustomer = objCustomer;
    public void ejbStore(){
    customerName = objCustomer.getName();
    customerMail = objCustomer.getMail();
    customerType = objCustomer.getType();

  • Oracle native sequencing: nextVal executed two times.

    We are migrating from Weblogic 6.1 sp 5 & TopLink 3.6.3 to Weblogic 8.1 sp 2 & TopLink 9.0.4 and we are having this issue:
    It seems that when assigning the sequence to new objets TopLink execs the nextVal for the sequence twice. In fact we probably wouldn't notticed it if it was just that, the problem is that TopLink seems to register the object into the cache with an oid and assigning the next one to the object stored in the database so we are getting NoSuchObjectException each time we try to access them.

    the test is about creating two objects (well, we are actually creating 6 objects in this sample as we are creating two "master" objects and adding two related (in a one to many relationship) objects to each one.)
    The thing I would like you to notice is this:
    The first AUTHOR object gets assigned the OID 442803 wether the next AUTHOR object gets the OID 442805 although we expected it to be 442804.
    The same occurs with the objects in the "many" side of the relation. They get sibiling OIDs but with a gap of two OIDs when creating the last two.
    I have been searching for simmilar problems in this forums and I found two posts:
    Both where related to a bug of an older version of TopLink (9.0.3 I think) when using something different than a number for the sequence field of an object. I expect it to be fixed in 9.0.4 version as it seemed to be fixed even for the 9.0.3 version. May it be a regression bug?
    Anyway, we are using BigDecimal on entity bean's sequence number and IIRC NUMBER(18) in Oracle tables.
    Currently our TopLink version is: 9.0.4 (031126)
    Our native sequence has an allocation size of 200 and it matches with SEQUENCEs defined in Oracle.
    As we are migratting from TopLink 3.6.3 and we have not changed the sequence prealocation size (we have not touched the database at all) we don't expect the problem to be on sequence prealocation.
    I must say we have changed the "default" JDBC driver that TopLink uses when doing the issuing the loging phase (which I think is a SUN driver) to an oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver as we were having problems with timestamp locking.
    Any idea?
    Thanks in advance.
    Ignacio.

    Solved!
    It was my fault. I was doing a really nasty thing to the entity beans.
    I must publicly thank my work mate (which is a pretty smart girl, I must say) in tracking down this issue.
    Here is what (we think) was happening:
    As I told in previous post in this post we are in the process of moving from TopLink 3.6.3 (EJB 1.1) to TopLink 9.0.4 (EJB 2.0). We do have a "super class" in our application where we had some common things of our entity beans, i.e. entityContext, oid and oca attributes. We have also some methods that retrieve and set values from and to the entity beans via value objects (in order to avoid the heavy RMI operations when doing it through "standard" getters and setters) well, it happened that the current implementation of the "batch setting" method used the getDeclaringMethods to update in both UPDATE and INSERT opperations entity attributes with the data of the value object.
    When switching to EJB 2.0 we had to push down both the oid and oca attributes (in order of being able do deploy them) to each final entity bean and now they where being included in the setting process!
    You can imagine an scenario like this:
    1. ejbCreate() // TopLink issues the SELECT SEQ_XXX NEXT VAL FROM DUAL and sets the oid of the EJB
    2. setAttributes() // transfer info from the value object to the newly created EJB: including a setOid(null)!
    3. commit() (Before Completion)
    4. TopLink detects that the damm object surprisingly DOES NOT have the oid attribute setted so it performs another SELECT SEQ_XXX NEXT VAL FROM DUAL in order to "fix" this big problem.
    5. commit() (After Completion) // the object is written to the database with the second value from the sequence whereas the first value is used to identify the entity bean into the identity cache.
    Well it may not be "exactly" what is happening but I'm sure we are not so far from reality with our assumptions.
    Andrei Ilitchev, thanks for your interest, sorry I could not post this sooner.

  • How to use Oracle DB Sequence to Generate Primary Key Values?

    Dear Members,
    I am using Oracle JDev V 11.1.2.1.0 and Oracle 11g XE Database.
    I have followed the below steps:-
    1/ Created an EmployeesEO
    2/ Created an EmployeesVO
    3/ Created a JSPX Page
    4/ On the JSPX Page I have dragged the EmployeesVO and created it in ADF Table Format.
    On this page when I create a new record, I want to generate employee id automatically based on a sequence which is created in the database of the HR Schema.
    Please let me know how to achieve the above requirement.
    Many thanks in advance.

  • Problem with Oracle Native Sequencing - please help!!

    Hello
    I am migrating from 3.6.5 to 10.1.3.1 (huge jump).
    And have a problem with sequencing.
    When I create new object Toplink does not pick up Sequence object name from the descriptor.
    When I see generated SQL it shows:
    SELECT .NEXTVAL FROM DUAL
    Each of my descriptor has it's own "..._seq" name defined in workbench.
    For DatabaseLogin i define
    login.useNativeSequencing();
    login.getDefaultSequence().setPreallocationSize(50);
    As a result - no luck.
    Do I miss something, some command?
    Thanks
    Paul

    I was doing more testing and found that the problem happens when I do
    UnitOfWork().assignSequenceNumbers()
    Thanks

  • Why is the  "Use Native Sequencing" option disabled ?

    I am trying Toplink with SQL Server and I have some identity fields... I see in the documentation that I should select the "Use Native Sequencing" option in the mapping properties(Database Info tab) but it is disabled(I use JDeveloper 10.1.2.1.0). Is there any reason for this ?
    Thanks in advance.

    Native sequencing should be configurable for the SQL Server platform. I have filed a bug to track this.
    The easiest workaround is to select a different database platform (i.e. Oracle) and then enable native sequencing. You should then set it back to SQL Server. In my quick test it kept the native sequencing configuration even though it shows as disabled.

  • Using oracle sequence in SQL Loader

    I'm using oracle sequence in control file of sql loader to load data from .csv file.
    Controlfile:
    LOAD DATA APPEND
    INTO TABLE PHONE_LIST
    FIELDS TERMINATED BY "," TRAILING NULLCOLS
    PHONE_LIST_ID "seqId.NEXTVAL",
    COUNTRY_CODE CHAR,
    CITY_CODE CHAR,

    BLOCKED_FREE_FLAG CHAR
    Datafile:
    1516,8,9,9,B
    1517,1,1,2,B
    1518,8,9,9,B
    1519,8,9,9,B
    1520,8,9,9,B
    1521,8,9,9,B
    1) As first column uses oracle sequence, we have not defined that in datafile.
    This gives me error "Can not insert NULL value for last column"
    Is it mandatory to specify first column in datafile, even though we are using sequence?
    2) Another table is referencing PHONE_LIST_ID column (the one for which we using sequence) of this table as a foreign key.
    So is it possible to insert this column values in other table simultaneously? Sequence no. should be same as it is in first table...
    Kindly reply this on urgent basis....

    use BEFORE INSERT trigger
    with
    select your_seq.nextval into :new.id from dual;

  • Using Oracle Stored Procedure in Interactive Reporting

    Hello,
    i'm trying to use Oracle Store procedure in Interactive reporting but all i get are errors.
    My env:
    Interactive Reporting 9.3.1
    Oracle Database 10.2
    I created OCE as ODBC/OBDC. Tables are returned and Stored Procedure entry is enabled.
    If i use "microsoft ODBC for Oracle" i can see stored procedure list but i get this error:
    SQL API: [SQLExecDirectW], SQL RETURN: [-1], SQL STATE: [42000], SQL NATIVE ERROR: [6550], SQL MESSAGE: [[Microsoft][ODBC driver for Oracle][Oracle]ORA-06550: line 1, column 7:
    PLS-00306: wrong number or types of arguments in call to 'TEST_PDC_RECORDSET'
    If i use Oracle's odbc i get: "Error in function sequence".
    If i use Merants (5.2) odbc i cannot retreive stored procedure list. (list is empty)
    Note.
    My stored procedure works (tested via sqlplus).
    thank u daniele

    Returning (or sending in) multiple rows directly from (or to) a stored procedure is not currently possible. I have been in contact with SAP on this subject earlier, and they suggest using a web service to do the job. I used this as a work around, calling the stored procedure from a web service. I send in VC tables to this web service, and this in turn contacts my stored procedure.
    The problem is related to the connector framework in the J2EE environment.
    I am on 7.0 sps 17
    If you use stored procedure single value parameters of type varchar, number ... then VC has no problem communicating with your procedures.
    Good luck

  • Native sequences in DB2

    Hi,
    I've just read in the docs that native sequences for DB2 are not supported.
    Blissfully unaware of this, we have been using native sequencing with db2 (and toplink 9.0.3) and it worked OK. After updating to 9.0.4, it stopped working (same id is used several times).
    What is the problem with db2 sequences? Is there a plan to support them some time in the future?
    Thank you,
    Ana Oleski

    Cache connect does not cache Oracle sequences; so if you need to share the same Oracle sequence in both TimesTen and Oracle, then you will need to go to Oracle and retrieve the nextval each time.

  • Native sequence issue

    Hi,
    I have a News domain object which is mapped to a News table. I have inserted some sample data into the table. The newsid column reaches 81 and hence i created a sequence for this column like
    CREATE SEQUENCE NEWS_SEQ START WITH 100 INCREMENT BY 50;
    i configured toplink to use native sequencing and also set the pre-allocation size to 50.
    When do a bulk insert .,toplink registers the objects and start to assign the sequence number. When it does a call to get the sequence number, the value returned is suprising.

    when it does the insert, i get primary key constraint violation error ( since news ids 1 to 81 are already inserted as sample data).
    i have created a sequence to start with 100, but how can news_seq.nextval be 50 ( first: 51 )
    thanks in advance.
    Regards
    Elango.

    When TopLink aquires a new sequence value with preallocation it assumes that the prevous 50 (preallocation size) of values are valid to be used.
    i.e.
    when we aquire 150 we assume we have 100-150, when we next aquire 200 we assume we have 150-200.
    So you need to set the START WITH to 50 > than the actualy number you wish TopLink to start with. In your case this should be 150. In general if you wish to start with 1, then START WITH 50 should be used.

    Hi Ted,
    Thanks for the feedback. I was able to create a report in Creystal Reports Designer 2008 using OCI.  It is not allowing only in the Eclipse plugin. In our environment we are not allowed to user Oracle thin connections and ONLY OCI is allowed.
    1) Can you please let me know if there is a way to do this?
    2) Will it allow data sources using native database driver?
    3) If so, can I use JRC to create these reports from a desktop java program?
    Thanks & Regards

    Rgds,
    Dave

    I am facing the same problem..... I always get the answers to my problem by reading the forums.. This time I am really not lucky enough. I am using Oracle 8.1.7. Does it have anything to do with version. I have used both ojdb14.jar and classes12.jar to get the same error output.
    Anybody has answer to it?

  • How to use Oracle text

    I'm storing files in a blob field in a 9i database, sometimes I need to query using the details stored in the database about the file and sometimes I need to search the files to find matches with some text (like search engine), I was told that oracle text can help me accomplish this functionality , however I don't know if it supports arabic text and I don't know how to use it from my application developed in 9i.
    Regards.

    Friend by using these step you can easily use Oracle inter text media

    Please note that in SqlPlus you can use '?' in stead of $ORACLE_HOME, and this works on Unix and Windows so if you want to execute $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/admin/catalog.sql you can simply use:
    on Unix sql> @?/rdbms/admin/catalog.sql
    on Windows sql> @?\rdbms\admin\catalog.sql
    5.2.1 Explanation of installation steps
    1. Connected to database as SYSDBA and create CTXSYS user:
    Ctxsys user is created by calling following script:
    @?/ctx/admin/dr0csys.sql <ctxsys> <system> <temp>
    Where:
    change_on_install - is the ctxsys user password
    DRSYS - is the default tablespace for ctxsys
    TEMP - is the temporary tablespace for ctxsys
    This will create user CTXSYS and grants full privileges to CTXSYS in order to create and insert into result tables, execute callbacks, rewrite queries, and perform system cleanup. At this point CTXSYS will not own any objects.ss
    2. Connected to database as CTXSYS and create all necessary objects
    All necessary object are creates by calling following script:

    This will installs all Oracle database objects required by the Oracle Text system. This includes:
    a) Data dictionary tables, views, sequence, packages
    b) Server management tables, views and packages
    c) Dispatcher packages
    d) Service queue objects
    3) Install appropriate language-specific default preferences.
    The next step is to install appropriate language-specific default preferences.When you use CREATE INDEX to create an index or ALTER INDEX to manage an index, you can optionally specify indexing preferences in the parameter string. There are seven preference classes:
    - Lexer, defines the language being indexed. ( language specific )
    - Wordlist, defines the expantion of stem and fuzzy queries. ( language specific )
    - Stoplist, defines words and themes that are not be indexed. ( language specific )
    - Datastore, defines document storage.
    - Filter, defines standards for converion of documents to plaintext.
    - Storage, defines the storage of the index tables.
    - Section group, enables possibilities to define document sections.
    There is script which creates language-specific default preferences for every language Oracle text supports in <ORACLE_HOME>/ctx/admin/defaults directory, such as English(US), Danish(DK), Dutch(NL), Finnish(SF), French(FR), German(DE), Italian(IT), Portuguese(PR), Spanish(ES), and Swedish(S). They are named in the form drdefXX.sql, where XX is the language code. To manually install US default preferences, for example, log into sqlplus as CTXSYS, and run 'drdefus.sql' as described below:
    @?/ctx/admin/defaults/drdefus.sql
    create user textuser identified by textuser
    default tablespace users
    temporary tablespace temp;
    -- You must grant 'ctxapp' role to textuser
    grant connect, resource, ctxapp to textuser;
    connect textuser/textuser
    drop table quick;
    create table quick (
    quick_id number
    constraint quick_pk primary key,
    text varchar2(80) );
    insert into quick ( quick_id, text ) values (1,'The cat sat on the mat');
    insert into quick ( quick_id, text ) values (2,'The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog' );
    insert into quick ( quick_id, text ) values (3,'The dog barked like a dog');
    commit;
    create index quick_text on quick ( text )
    indextype is ctxsys.context;
    col text format a45
    col s format 999
    select text, score(42) s from quick
    where contains ( text, 'dog', 42 ) > 0
    order by s desc;

  • How to define data-sources-alias.xml to use Oracle data source

    Hi,
    I created Oracle jdbc Data Source named "MYDS" in Visual Admin.  I added the alias = MYDS_ALIAS.  I set the Initial Connection to 2.  On the Monitor tab, I see a green line running across the screen.  The datasource MYDS is connected to the Oracle.
    Now, I would like to define "data-sources-alias.xml" to use MYDS.
    When creating data-source-aliases.xml it creates the alias by default on ${com.sap.datasource.default} which is the default DB.
    I followed the link --> How to point data-source-aliases.xml to another Datasource
    and my data-sources-alias.xml is now:
    <data-source-aliases>
         <aliases>
              <data-source-name>$</data-source-name>
              <alias>BRANCH50DS</alias>
         </aliases>
    </data-source-aliases>
    The "EAR generatation has finished successfully", but when "Deploy to J2EE Engine", I got the error below:
    1) How to define data-sources-alias.xml to use Oracle data source?
    2) I found the link (SDA Deployment error) talking about "sda-dd.xml".  How to create "sda-dd.xml" and make it use substitution variables "MYDS"

    Hi,
    If you remove the $ and braces (as shown below) it will work.

    <aliases>
    <data-source-name>MYDS</data-source-name>
    <alias>BRANCH50DS</alias>

  • Getting the schema using Oracle SQL Developer 1.5.1

    I need to generate a report in CSV/XLS format using Oracle SQL Developer 1.5.1 to get the schema details
    in the below format.
    Table Name: XXXXXXXXX
    Table Space Name: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
    Structure :
    Field Name Data Type Size
    Xxxxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxx
    Xxxxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxx
    Xxxxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxx
    Xxxxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxx
    Field level constraint:
    Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    Table Level Constraint:
    Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    Indexes:
    Index Name Column Name(s) Table space name
    Xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxx
    Xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxx
    Xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxx
    Sequence Number:
    Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    Triggers:
    Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    I am using a query to do that, but I cannot run more than one queries in the Create Report Dialog.
    I went to the Menu->View->Reports. In that, I chose User Defined Reports, created a new folder called Schema Detail and in that a report named Schema Detail. I right click on that report, choose Edit option, Create Report Dialog opens.
    In the Create Report Dialog, I chose the option Script for Value of Style.
    In the SQL column I enter a query "select * from table_names". But, if I enter another query after that, it does not run and reports an error "SQL Error: ORA-00933: SQL command not properly ended
    00933. 00000 - SQL command not properly ended" Cause:    Action: "
    I end the first query with a semi colon, but it does not work.
    The queries run fine in a SQL Worksheet. There, I can terminate the first query with a semi colon and enter the second query. Then, I run both of them together so that result-set of second query appears after the second.
    Am I doing something wrong? Can someone please advise on how to get the information I need?
    Thanks a lot.

    You can do it in SQL Worksheet because you are running a script. You could run the script in SQL*Plus, and even start it from a bat/cmd file.
    Or if you want this as a User Defined Report, you might make it a PL/SQL style report. Here, all output is done through DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT or DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE. You can output HTML tags or plain text. I have an example in my paper for ODTUG Kaleidoscope 2009.
