Using a tablet to make things in Illustrator? Your experiences?

Do any of you use a tablet for doing your work? I got one recently and haven't messed with it much in Illustrator, it'd be a lot different from the pen tool.
Have any tips, suggestions, thoughts on the subject?

I use a tablet 100% of the time every day in all applications. I could not possibly imagine pushing a rock around on my desk ever again.
As Wade and Mike posted, practice. You'll get the hang of it. Put your mouse in a drawer for a week and use only the tablet and stylus. You'll adapt quickly.

So I am using Xcode 5 to make a calculator app and I cannot figure out how to two do two things. First, how to incorporate the decimal and two, how to make the positive to negative button. The app is only for the iPad. I would like to know how to do it asap. Here is the code I used for addition if that helps.

  • How to Use WACOM Tablet on PS and AI

Have just purchased a used WACOM Intuos tablet and just getting started using it.
Was sad to see that there is no forum here for Illustrator as I'm trying to solve a problem using my tablet to draw in AI.  Simply put when I'm using a pencil or a brush to draw or paint, it seems AI is modifying the path after I lay it down.  For what reason, I have no idea.  So I don't get what I draw or paint the way I laid it down.  I've run into avid tablet users on AI so maybe there is some adjustment to make it usable w/o this problem?
Anyone have any ideas or can you direct me to another forum?  Any thoughts greatly appreciated.
Now, has anyone drawn or painted in PS?  Would this be an easier prospect since it's raster based?  (suspect that would eliminate the problem of my lines being modified)  I will keep playing with it and maybe that's my solution, just stick with PS.  I used the tablet on Corel PainterX last night with more predictable results.
Many thanks for your ideas as I learn this new tool.
    Mike

I've been trying to do this myself with some success.
Be as forgiving of the tool as you need to be forgiving of yourself. This is not as fast as using pencil and paper, pen and ink. It is not as messy either. With the computer you can quickly erase or take back a portion of a stroke. Look into brush options in both AI and PS. You may find some brushes that better support your style.
As for getting quick results with a tablet, there is a tendency with both AI and PS to digitize a stroke, like what old digitizers did in other software (AutoCAD, etc.) If you want more capabilities, you might consider spending more on a tablet and stylus. Sensitivity or lack or it seems to be an issue with tablets. The sensitivity is less than we want it to be. Slow down and let the computer processor keep up with the complexity of your stroke. You may also benefit from working larger, then decreasing the size of the final image to something that satisfies your design intent. For example, if your final image size is 8.5X11 inches, work twice as large and scale the final image down to something useful once you are done.
Beware dialing up PS files to too high in size or resolution or this can slow a computer or make a file that is difficult to manage and keep due to its size. There are lots of brush types you can create, too, if you look into the capabilities of these "power tools."
Have fun and you will master this tool like you have mastered so many others.

  • Dam, did you know that ppl make things harder then they should be

As I look here and other places I see that people make things harder then what they need tobe.I see people fearing fear when it comes to programming. They are so worried if they are going to make it or if they will pass this test or that test, well I got one thing to say and that is relax and just chill.Look at it this way it will if it will it won't if it won't.The point is enjoy what you do and live life that way,if you dont enjoy programming stop now.
Just a thought from a hobbies

And you should be using C instead of Java, right? :)
Well I would not go that far cause that would be
comparing languages then and I know all languages have
there good points and bad points.Know one can really
say what language is better cause it all depends on
what you are trying to acomplish/do.But with that said
what the hell ,yeah you should be using C instead of
java if you are just starting to learn how to
    program.:-p So why not Pascal?

  • Using Media Manager to 'Make Offline' it re-names media files to 'Private'

For some reason Media Manager is changing the name of media files when processing them making it impossible to reconnect them.
My director always has a complete copy of our film's media files on his 'home set-up' (FCP 5.0 on a Powerbook with 2 x 500gb firewire drives) so he can look at our cuts at home. This has caused problems in the past with firewire drives expiring or failing to mount: making the whole process pointless. Also, as the amount of footage increased, he struggled to find space for the 6-8 drives required.
My solution was to down-convert our DV resolution media files to Photo-Jpeg resolution which allowed me to fit 3TB of footage onto 2 brand new G-Tech drives. Every time I sent him a cut to view all I had to do was use media manager to make the sequence offline and convert it to exactly the same Photo-Jpeg setting I used to export the files. All he has to do is reconnect the sequence to his drives at his end.
A wonderful plan except when you came to reconnecting. I found that 95% of clips connect perfectly and then you get asked for the location of some media files called 'Trashes' 'Applications' or more commonly, 'Private'. Obviously no such files existed - I use an impeccably organised and structured filename system when capturing. Therefore it made random clips in my sequence impossible to reconnect once it had been converted to the settings used by the director.
When this only happened once or twice I thought I could easily just work out what files it was actually looking for by the clip names on the timeline and tell FCP to reconnect to the correct file by ignoring the file name but this is so time consuming and impractical when you have 20/30 clips that have been renamed on a sequence. It is also not the sort of thing my director is technically capable/willing to do.
It also seems to be happening when you convert things in the other direction. When I took a sequence from the director's project and brought it back onto my system by converting his sequence to my DV-PAL settings we got the same problems with 'Private and 'Applications' clips. And we know for sure that all of these clips were online on his computer.
Has anyone seen this before or know any steps I could take to prevent it happening.
I fear that if I can't get this method to work I will have to give him full resolution media to work with and I will be fated to spend the rest of my days replacing. smashing or swearing at firewire drives that only work when they feel like it.
    Anybody got any ideas.
    Cheers
    Paul
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

haven't tried this but it may be worth some investigation.
try exporting an XML of your sequence and passing that to the director
on the director's FCP setup, import the xml, and in the Import XML... window uncheck the "Override with setting from XML" checkbox, and choose the approriate offline res that matches the directors media.
see if the resulting sequence will reconnect

Thanks, Deggie. I thought Apple would see my feedback.  I would just like to know if there is a simple way to copy just a few music files from an old iPod.  I saw instructions on how to copy all of them from the iPod but it was complicated and I really didn't want to copy all the songs.  I guess I could delete all the songs but the ones I want to copy then go through that process again.  Do you know how to back up music to my computer?  I don't want to have to go through this again and possibly lose music.

  • Best option for making video podcast tutorials using a tablet

I am not very familiar with the use of tablets but I would like to be able to produce tutorials for my students that look like this:

Would Inkwell work? I am not clear that it is still supported in Leopard. I primarily use an iMac 24" 2.8GHZ Core Duo Extreme. Ideally, a tablet notebook would work best but I would like to make a minimal investment. Would a Wacom Bamboo be a good choice.
    Thanks.

  • Photoshop CS3, using pen tool to make selection or path without any color

OK, here is my problem. I'm using CS3 photoshop right now. Last time I was using it regularly was in 2001, so it was version 5 or 6. At that time you could use the pen tool to make a selection or a path without ANY color. I'm trying to cut out something that needs precision (therefore the pen tool) but I need to be able to see what I'm doing. Therefore, would prefer no color option. This used to be easy, with paths, it was the default.
Can't figure it out now, HELP is no help. And, the User Guide is no longer available on Adobe.com. Looked for the one for the CS4 suite, not much much luck there either. I can call them tomorrow about that. *Right now, all I'm trying to do is put together a little pasted together thing for my niece. Two stuffed animals with antlers and santa hats on a Xmas background. Everything is done but cutting out around the stuffed animals. They need their little tufts of stuffing, so I need a tool that can create a smooth path without blocking what I'm doing with color.* Any help will me appreciated. I've tried for days to figure this out on my own, since last time I posted, I figured it out before someone responded. And, the response was quick, so I didn't want to waste anyone's time.
The pdf user guide for this is unavailable, I just ordered a book to help me with the stuff I can't figure out by myself. Thanks for everyone's quick help. –Suze

    Suze,
I too use CS3 and I may be confused about your post. If so, I apologize for wasting any reader's time.
When I need a precision tool for rotoscoping a subject, I usually choose the Polygonal Lasso tool. Of all the Lasso tools, using the polygonal is the most labor intensive, but gives you the highest degree of control. With a little practice you can get quite good at it. If necessary, blow up the image to help you see what you are doing.
    -- Duplicate the background layer
    -- Rotoscope the subject
-- Click Refine Edge and adjust Radius, Contrast, Contract/Expand, Smooth and Feather to taste
-- Choose New>Layer via Copy or Cut
-- Hide background layer(s) and Save As or Move this layer onto your original graphic.
There may be other ways of doing it but this is what works for me. I hope that helps.

  • Can I use Airport Express to make my G3 wireless?

I have an old iMac G3 400MHz running Panther. I don't expect it to be around for long and so it's not worth installing an Airport card, but I still want to connect it to my wifi router.
A friend has lent me an Airport Express, and says it's possible to receive a wifi signal if I connect it to the G3 using an ethernet cable. In effect, the AE will be acting as the iMac's wireless dongle.
Clearly, if it's got any chance of working then I have to be able to enter the router's ID and password in the AE. I've installed the software that came with it, but it won't let me open the Airport setup program. It just says I've got no Airport card and then gives me only a Quit option.
Any help appreciated. Happy Christmas to all Mac users!

    Welcome to the discussions, Nick!
If you have a router there broadcasting a wireless network, it may be possible for the AirPort Express to "Join" that network.
Using your Mac with Snow Leopard installed, temporarily connect an ethernet cable from your computer to the AirPort Express and power up the Express.
Open Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Do you see an option to "Allow ethernet client" under the Wireless Network Name?
If so, you should be able to set this up as you want and see below for setup. If not, it's probably not going to work and a lot more info will be needed.
Wireless Mode would be "Join a wireless network"
Wireless Network Name would be the name of your wireless network there
Make sure there is a check mark next to "Allow Ethernet Clients"
Wireless Security is the exact setting that your wireless network is now using
Wireless Password is the exact setting that your wireless network is now using.
    Update to save settings.
Move the Express to the desired location and connect an ethernet cable from it to your old iMac and power things up.
    Any luck?

  • Using a Tablet with Infinity

    Hello Community,
At the ripe old age of 67 I am considering purchasing a tablet to complement my laptop at home.  I currently have BT Infinity Opt1 at home with black Hub3 I believe and would ask for help and information on the following.
I assume I will be able to use my tablet at home within a reasonable distance from the hub.  First out of the box, again, I presume the device will detect my hub's signal and link to it.  And lastly, will I be able to use it out-and-about away from the home hub.  I have heard the terminology "Hot Spots" but how do I know where they are and if I am near to one.
I hope I can link up with my original BT Broadband service with my tablet and not have to upgrade or find another provider to do the same job.
I do not have agreat understanding of these things and would ask for your help on this matter which would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank You

I have used still photos to make a Quick Time movie using FCE.  The DVD made using i-DVD looks somewhat grainy and the motion isn’t smooth when played on my TV.  Other DVD’s I have made play much better and I am wondering if the problem is my Quick Time movie settings.  The Dimensions and size of the problem movie are 1920X1080 and 584 MB respectively, while the movies that play better  have Dimensions of 853X480 and are about 1.3 GB in size.  Is this the source of my problem and how do I change things for the better.

Are you exporting to QuickTime Movie, or to QuickTime Conversion?   For iDVD, you need to export to QuickTime Movie.   Exporting to QT Conversion will kill the quality if you are moving the video from FCE to iDVD.
The file size per se makes no difference.
What size (pixel dimensions) are the photos that you put into your 1920x1080 sequence?  Also, exactly what are the sequence properties ... is it 1920x1080i60 ... or i50?  In North America it should be i60.
853X480 is an odd frame size.  Where are you seeing this number?  It would appear to be DV-NTSC, which has a frame size of 720x480.  Your 1920x1080 frame size would not be DV-NTSC, it would be Apple Intermediate Codec.   DV and AIC will look different, for sure.
Also, your quality setting in iDVD can affect the final video.  You may want to check that also (in iDVD Preferences > Projects).  Set it to Professional Quality if at all possible.

  • When not using EJBs can I make BD a Singleton and cache facade instances?

    Hi,
In an application which does not use EJBs can I make BD(Business Delegate) a singleton?
I was very sure about doing this but when I tried Google on the same subject the answers were'nt supportive of this but that was in the context of applications which used EJBs. And also item 4 in Effective Java isnt very supportive of caching Objects at the drop of a hat.
When not using EJBs would it be an unnecessary thing to make BD a singleton and cahce Facade instances in a BD and DAO instances in a Facade? I am planning to use a array based blocking bounded buffer for the purposes of caching. Or would it be better to make both BD and a facade as SIngletons and just cache DAOs in a Facade?
Any suggestion would be of good help to me.
    Thanks a lot.

Not sure I understand all your design, but you seem
to describe an architecture where requests are queued
and handled serially.Sorry if I messed up while explaining it. No, it will not be handled serially. Since the BD is a singleton multiple threads can pass messages to it simulteanously, a bit like an object of the Action class in Struts. Since I dont see having any synchronized methods in a BD requests will be handled simulteanously.
The impact on throughput of handling requests
serially (as opposed to parallelizing them) probably
outweights by far the cost of instantiating one more
object per request...Yes, I understand that but as I explained above the reqests wont be handled serially.
To be more clear, I am thinking of using any one of these two things:
    1) BD(Singleton)-->Facade(Singleton, caches DAOs in a thread safe data structure)
2)1) BD(Singleton, caches Facade instances in a thread safe data structure)-->Facade(caches DAOs in a thread safe data structure).
the thread safe data structure I am planning to have is a array based bounded buffer which blocks using wait and notify mechanism.
    Thank you for the reply.

I'm using a TravelSIM to make calls and texts home to Australia on my iPhone 4S while I'm overseas. Do I need to change settings, or do anything else, to make sure I don't pay too much?
I have advice to turn off push data and don't use Google maps
Are there other things I should do so my costs will be kept low?
thanks for any answers from experienced iPhone using travellers!
    kind regards,   Di

It's not entirely impossible actually as someone has pointed out to me that I can turn on Call Forwarding and that stops any incoming calls. I've just forwarded it to my google voice number and then turned on "do not disturb" in google voice and whenever I get a call it goes straight to my google voice voicemail and my phone does nothing. The only thing now is I still get text messages but I think the phone calls bugged me more because they would make my music turn off for much longer.
Even though this isn't a perfect solution it's something so far so maybe you shouldn't just come out and say there's NOTHING I can do because so far I've found part of a solution. If you don't have anyting productive to say then just don't reply and close the tab. Thanks.
At this point I'm wondering if anyone knows of any Jailbreak tweaks that can enable what I want. Unless of course it's agaisnt the rules of this forum to mention jailbreak stuff...

  • Intuos tablet not working with Flash & Illustrator

I have been using an Intuos 3 graphic tablet for the last 2 years with photoshop and it works wonders. However, I recently decided to try my self at Illustrator and Flash, and was greatly disapointed in my tablet.
Each time I try using a tool with my tablet (for exemple, the brush tool), the programms will suddently have a critical error. no warnings, nothing, it just closes. I can use my mouse just fine, it really only crashes when I use the tablet.
I just downloaded the newest patch and it works still fine with photoshop.
I am using a PC with windows XP.
Any tips would be really appreciated.

  • What kind of brush to chose to paint adjustment layers and retouching in PS when using wacom tablet

I have just started using Wacom tablet (Wacom Intuos pro small).
I would like someone please to answer some of my queries:
Do you always put Pressure For Size on for retouching and painting adjustments layers masks?
What type and size brush you should use for painting adjustment layers masks?
What type and size brush you should use for retouching photos?
Will be happy to receive any links to video tutorial on this subject?
Thank you for your help and effort in advance

Same answer.   Adjustment layers tend to need either very soft masking with a high level of feathering, or very precise using a small fairly hard brush.
But if I was doing the latter, it would be to adjust one particular part of the image, in which case I would usually make an acurate selection of that area before I opened the adjustment layer.  This automatically fils the layer mask to your selection.
The sort of situation where I might be doing a lot of fine painting in a layer mask was where I had used Refine edge and output a new layer with layer mask.  Refine edge often leaves errors that need touching up, but I would be using 100% opacity and changing the size, so I would have pressure change size.
It's entirely up to you to decided what works best in any situation, and to practice so you become familiar with the options - of which there are _many_.
