Using a variable as an identifier

Hi,
Lets say I have 5 text boxes that are named t1, t2, t3 etc. I would like to use the variable "i" in the array below as part of the identifier to populate the field is this possible to use an incrementing variable as part of the instance identifer? If so can you help with the syntax I can't get it to work for me.
for(var i = 0; i < 5; i++) {
t(i).text = i;
Thanks,
UglyFrank

Can anyone help me out with something similar? Say I have 3 text fields named strength_txt, dexterity_txt, and constitution_txt, and I have 3 variables:
var strength:int = 8;
var dexterity:int = 12;
var constitution:int = 14;
I want to make a function that takes a 1 variable argument and displays the variable name and value in the proper text field. So something like this:
function myFunction(ability:int):void {
     [ability + "_txt"].text = "Your " + ability + " is " + String(ability) + ".";
myFunction(strength);
myFunction(dexterity);
myFunction(constitution);
I was able to do what I want using a longer way, but now I'm curious if it can be done in a shorter way.

  • Trying to use parameter variable as column identifier in SQL where clause

    Hey guys,
    Doing a college project... would really appreciate some help. I am trying to use a variable in the where clause of a select cursor in PL/SQL. The code is this:
    procedure results(p_search_entry varchar2, p_search_field varchar2) is
    cursor c_results is
    select * from physics_b where p_search_field = p_search_entry;
    begin
    for cv_results in c_results
    loop
    -- loop through actions
    end loop;
    The problem is that I don't know how to get the where clause to accept the variable passed into the procedure as the field name. Does anyone know the syntax for this?
    Thanks very much!

    To suit your requirement use ref cursor..
    If your database is 9i and upwards you can use sys_refcursor as I have used or else you can declare the cursor shown in the statement below
    type c_result is ref cursor;
    c_results c_result;
    Jus replace these two statement in the example if your oracle database is prior to 9i
    Eg:
    procedure results(p_search_entry varchar2, p_search_field varchar2) is
    qry_stmt VARCHAR2(1000) ;
    c_results sys_refcursor;
    begin
    qry_stmt := 'select * from physics_b where '||p_search_field|| '='|| p_search_entry
    open c_results for qry_stmt
    loop
    <fetch as like normal cursor>
    <ur normal cursor operation etc....>
    end loop;
    end results;

  • SCEP - Using a variable in the Subject field

    Hi
    Has anyone out there successfully installed a SCEP certificate on an iOS device using a unique identifier of some sort in the subject field? We are using iPhone configuration utility but ultimately want to use Apple configurator.
    We can install the certificate, but cannot get the common name (CN) to populate using something like the device serial number or UDID. We have tried variations on CN=SERIALNUMBER, CN=%SERIALNUMBER%, CN = %$UDID%, CN = $UDID$ but it just populates the field with the string itself rather than the device serial number or UDID.
    I know others have posted similar issues on this forum:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/22162313#22162313
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/22162318#22162318
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/20635765#20635765
    But no-one seems to have successfully managed this.
    Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Mark

    Simple answer... When I used the variable, I marked it as a string.  There is an email address setting.

  • Using a variable with "tell application"

    I'd like to use a variable (app_name) with "tell application" in the following function:
    on getAdobeDoc(app_name)
    tell application app_name
    tell current document
    return (name as Unicode text)
    end tell
    end tell
    end getAdobeDoc
    but I'm getting the following error in Script Editor
    "Expected end of line but found class name." with the word "document" highlighted.
    Are you allowed to use variables in "tell application"? All Adobe CS apps seem to use the same format to get the document name so I'd like to use one function to get them.

    If the application might have a different name on the target machine (for example, if it has a version number added), you can use an application's bundle identifier (or creator code) to set the variable, in which case the using terms from statement tells AppleScript the application (on your machine) to get the dictionary terms from. If the application you are using terms from has a dictionary identical to your variable, everything should work the same. The following example uses a variable (called, appropriately enough, TexttEdit) for the TextEdit application:
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #FFDDFF;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
    tell application "Finder" to set TextEdit to the name of application file id "com.apple.TextEdit"
    tell application TextEdit
    using terms from application "TextEdit"
    launch
    make new document with properties {text:"This is a test"}
    end using terms from
    end tell
    </pre>

  • Error while using the variable name "VARIABLE" in variable substitution

    Hi Experts,
      I am using variable substitution to have my output filename set as a payload field value. This is probably a reserved word but i would like to know where i can find a detailed documentation on this. Say things to note / restrictions while using variable substitution.
    This is the error in the channel:

  • Using global variable in package

    Hi. I have created a function (Retrieve_SerialNo) which returns a variable, which I use throughout my package. I would like to assign this variable as a global variable to be used by all functions and procedures in the package. Can someone help me in the declaration of this variable as a global variable? Also, is it necessary for me to initialize this variable whenever the package executes. If yes, how would I do this?
    CREATE OR REPLACE PACKAGE BODY Supply_Item_Interface AS
    FUNCTION Retrieve_SerialNo RETURN VARCHAR2 IS
        v_serial_no VARCHAR2(20);
        CURSOR Serial_Code IS

          EXIT WHEN Serial_Code%NOTFOUND;
          v_serial_no := v_serial_no;
        END LOOP;
        CLOSE Serial_Code;
        RETURN v_serial_no;

      END;

A variable defined in a procedure is only visible within that procedure.
    A variable defines in a package body. is visible within that package body (i.e. procedures and functions in that package body can "see" that variable.
    A variable defined in the package definition? Well, who can see the definitions of procedures and function in a a package header/definition? Everyone else basically (other PL/SQL packages and procedures and functions). So this is also true for variables defined in the package interface. These are global variables that not only can be used by the code in that package's body, but also can be used by other packages and PL/SQL code.
    So when you create a global variable you need to decide on its scope:
    - define it in package header for global usage in all PL/SQL code
    - define it in package body for global usage within that package only
    CREATE OR REPLACE PACKAGE BODY Supply_Item_Interface AS
    ..snipped..Ugly code as there is no need to use an explicit cursor if returning a value from a single row. Also buggy code. If there are multiple rows returned by the cursor, the function returns the serial of the last random row. How does this make sense?
    This is what I would expect to see from a function like this. You pass it a unique identifier and it returns the applicable attribute (column) value for it.
    E.g.
    create or replace function GetSerialNo( orderNo number ) return number is
      serialNo number;
    begin
      select
        s.serial_code into serialNo
      from spare_parts s,
           orders o
      where s.serial_code = o.serial_code
      and o.order_no = orderNo;
      return( serialNo );
    exception when NO_DATA_FOUND then
      return( null )
    end;Also note that there is no need to write ugly uppercase code. This is not a proper coding standard. Programming standards for all languages (ranging from C# to Java to Delphi to Visual Basic to C/C++) specify that camelcase should be used for variables and pascalcase for procedures/functions/methods. Uppercase is very seldom used and then only for constant names and compiler options/flags for example.
    Coding reserved words in uppercase? That is just plain silly - and not found in today's programming languages. Do yourself a favour and forget the idiotic standards used by some for PL/SQL and look at the standards for Java and .Net/C# - as the latter are the de facto standards for programming (and have been for the last 2 decades and more).

  • PL/SQL speed issues when using a variable

    I have a very strange issue that is causing problems.
    I am running Golden connecting to a 11g database.
    I created a procedure to insert records into a table based on a query. The source query includes variables that I have populated prior to the insert statement. The problem is that if I use the variable for one very specific where statement, the statement goes from running in less than 1 second, to running in 15 minutes. It gets even more strange though. Not only does a 2nd variable not cause any problems, the exact same variable in the same statement works fine.
    This procedure takes 15 minutes to run.

    I've been googling for possible solutions and keep running into something called "parameter sniffing". It appears to be a SQL Server issue though, as I cannot find solutions for Oracle. I tried nesting the insert statement inside it's own procedure with new variables populated by the old variables, but nothing changed.

    Edited by: user_7000017 on Jan 8, 2013 9:52 AM Put the code in code tags.

    You are not describing procedures. You are listing anonymous PL/SQL blocks.
    As for the code - this approach to assigning PL/SQL variables are highly questionable. As the functions are native PL/SQL functions too, there is no need to parse and execute a SQL cursor, do context switching, in order to assign values to PL/SQL variables.
    This is wrong:
    select
        add_months(trunc(sysdate,'mm'), -1), trunc(sysdate,'mm')
        into v_start_period, v_end_period
    from dual;This is correct:
    v_start_period := add_months(trunc(sysdate,'mm'), -1);
    v_end_period := trunc(sysdate,'mm');Just as you would not use +"select 1 into plVariable from dual;+", instead of a standard variable assignment statement like +"plVariable := 1;"+.
    As for the performance/execution difference. Does not make sense. I suggest simplifying the code in order to isolate the problem. For example, take that in-line SQL (aliased as a in the main SQL) and create a testcase where it uses the function, versus a PL/SQL bind variable with the same data type and value as that returned by the function. Examine and compare the execution plans.
    Increase complexity (if no error) and repeat. Until the error is isolated.
    The 1st step in any troubleshooting, is IDENTIFYING the problem. Without knowing what the problem is, how can one fix it?

  • Using process variables in XPath

    I am trying to use a variable (/process_data/@Division) to identify an xml node to determine the person for a task:
    /process_data/DivisionRolesXML/divisions/division[Division='string(/process_data/@Division )' and Position='Div Executive']/LDAPId
    I get no value returned (e.g. result is 'null'). The log shows that @Division has a string value.
    It works if the actual value (not variable) is specified:
    /process_data/DivisionRolesXML/divisions/division[Division='division_name' and Position='Div Executive']/LDAPId
    Thoughts anyone ?

    Hi
    I'm reasonably sure that you need to remove the single quotes in your expression. The single quotes mean that your entire sub-clause is being treated as a string, rather than as an expression.
    i.e.
    ...[Division='string(/process_data/@Division)' ...
    change to
    ...[Division=string(/process_data/@Division) ...

  • Using Global Variables in Data Quality Address Cleanse Transforms

    I am currently developing in Data Services 12.2.
    I am trying to dynamically populate the List Owner information in the option tabs of the USA Regulatory Address Cleanse by using global variables.  It populates the 3553 with the variable name instead of the value assigned.
    According to the Technical Manual, it is possible to use global variables in Data Quality Address Cleanse transforms:
    However, you can use substitution parameters in all places where global variables are supported, for example:
    Query transform WHERE clauses
    Mappings
    SQL transform SQL statement identifiers
    Flat-file options
    User-defined transforms
    Address cleanse transform options
    Matching thresholds
    Does anyone know if it is possible to use global variables in the option tab of the Address Cleanse; if so, can you describe how it is done?
    Thanks in advance,

  • How to obtain SQL that don't use bind variables

    Hi,
    I'm trying to identify the SQL that should benefit from using bind variables.
    First, I tried to obtain the common signature from all those sql calls, by using:
    select * from (
    select  force_matching_signature, count(1) from v$sql where force_matching_signature<>0 group by force_matching_signature order by 2 desc
    ) where rownum < 50;Then, I copied those values to clipboard and executed: select sql_text from v$sql where force_matching_signature=<<<copied_signature_value>>>;Now I want to make it automatically, and get just 1 occurrence of each SQL that is similar to others by using a query.
    I've tried this:
    select sql_text from
    select sql_text, force_matching_signature, row_number() over (partition by force_matching_signature order by sql_text desc)rn from v$sql where force_matching_signature <>0
    )where rn <2 and rownum < 10 order by force_matching_signature descBut this is not returning results by attending to the count(1) of the first query I used. How can I modify this so I get the results in order of 'importance'?
    Thanks

    And I said. First use order by, then use rownum. I didn't mention row_number. Also there should be no need to add any more columns.
    Did you try it? Why didn't it work?
    untested example
    select * from (
       select sql_text from (select sql_text, force_matching_signature, row_number() over (partition by force_matching_signature order by sql_text desc) rn from v$sql where force_matching_signature != 0)
       where rn = 1
       order by force_matching_signature desc /* add any ordering you like here */
    where rownum < 10  /* then filter on the first 10 results */If you want to order it in such a way that the statement that is found most times comes first then say so. However I do not see how to group in your case.
    maybe like this
    tested example
    select * from (
       select cnt, sql_text
       from (select sql_text, force_matching_signature, row_number() over (partition by force_matching_signature order by sql_text desc) rn , count(*) over (partition by force_matching_signature) cnt
             from v$sql
             where force_matching_signature != 0)
       where rn = 1
       order by cnt desc, force_matching_signature desc /* add any ordering you like here */
    where rownum < 10  /* then filter on the first 10 results */

    Hi,

    I was wondering whether there was a means of using a variable for the Source Directory in order to just have to change its value where it is defined and not every where it is used...

    Hi,
    Is this a sender file adapter? or a receiver file adapter?
    You can make a change / make the receiver file adapter's directory dynamic by setting the value during runtime in the mapping.
    Use  this blog and the code in the blog to acheive this,
    /people/michal.krawczyk2/blog/2005/11/10/xi-the-same-filename-from-a-sender-to-a-receiver-file-adapter--sp14
    Sender File adapter, I dont think this is possible.

    Hi,
    It is a special variable available for the VAT summary part, not to be used in the rows but in a separate repetitive area.
    To display the respective VAT rates in each row, create a database field instead: Tax Definition - Rate%. It will populate the VAT percentage for you.

    Regards,
    Krishna

    Hi Krishna,
    What is the datatype of the Variable lastupdate ?
    In my case
    Variable
    Name : LastUpdateDate
    Datatype : Alphanumeric
    Action : Historize
    Query : select to_char(to_date(sysdate,'DD-MON-YY'),'DD-MON-YY') from sys.dual
    Then in filter I used
    EMP.HIREDATE>to_date('#LastUpdateDate','DD-MON-YY')
    Thanks
    Sutirtha

  • Using a variable as a value in jsp:param

    I was wondering, I have a String variable, vid_1, and want to use a jsp:include and pass that in as one of the parameters. How can I do this? I have to do some testing to make sure vid_1 is valid and set a default if not. It contains a number referring to which video needs to be displayed.
    Is there anyway I can get this value to be used in jsp:param value?

    Well,First thing you haven't pharsed your question properly.
    Anyways as per my understading.
    The first thing is make use of in this case as your defined requirement states you need to make use of variables of both the JSP's which need compile time include not at the runtime.use of
    <%@ include file="url" %>would be more appropriate as you want to use the variable of parent jsp to the child one.
    Anyways if you are thinking to apply a solution using <jsp:include/>
    <jsp:include page="url">
    <jsp:param name="paramName" value="<%=stringVariable>"/>
    </jsp:include>and extract the paramName's corresponding value as a request parameter in other JSP.
    Hope that might answer your question :)
    REGARDS,
    RaHuLRaHul,
    Thanks for the reply. The second example you gave is what I was trying to do. I thought I did exactly what you have there and it was not working. I will check it over again and post back on here when I have a chance.
    For now I was trying to use c:set to save the variable in the request and then using the EL expression ${requestScope.variable} to put it in the <jsp:param> element. I had some things working and others not when I quit. Hopefully tomorrow I can give you a full report and we can get this worked out.
    Maybe my problem is something else? Look at this post of mine:

    Thanks so much for the help.
