Using Automator to distinguish duplicate files

This might seem like a silly question, but here's my problem. I have two folders with hundreds of image files in each...I would like to find out if there are any files in folder A that are not in folder B.. It would seem like automator could do this for me but I can't find the right command sequence to make it work.. Applescript is a little above my head
Anybody have any clues? Like I said, its probably simple, but I've spent a good hour on it now without any joy...

It may be possible to do in AppleScript, but I don't know about Automator.
The first question you have to ask, though, is what constitutes 'duplicate'?
For example, do you consider two files of the same name as being the same?
What about if one of them is twice the size of the other? or one was modified yesterday while the other was modified in 2004? Or maybe they have different creation dates?
You need to make those decisions before you can consider a script to do the task.

Problem using Automator to back up files

I've tried several times to set Automator up to help me back up files, but each time, the workflow only goes through part of the task before Automator shuts down unexpectedly.
Here's what I'm doing:
1. I set Find Finder Items to find files, etc. (using my hard drive as the search location) modified after a certain date (when I last backed up my files).
2. I followed that with Copy Finder Items.
3. The third step was Move Finder Items (the copies) to the desktop.
4. The last was a new folder the copies were supposed to be moved into.
(I want to make sure I get all my new/modified files backed up without having to go through each folder, etc. individually.)
The workflow sets up fine, and usually the Find Finder Items step seems to run all the way through. Most of the time it quits unexpectedly partway through the copy step (I have had some folders appear on the desktop, though, seeming to indicate that it's accomplishing something). I reformatted my hard drive a couple months ago, and if I remember right, this same thing has happened both before then and since.
Does anyone have any tips? I read through some of the other posts in this topic, and it seems that Automator can be kind of perplexing (...and it's entirely possible I'm flubbing up the process somewhere). I've tried looking through the logs that come up when it shuts down, but can't find anything obviously causing the problem.

How can I use Automator to batch convert files of various formats into pdf files?

I am very much a novice. I need to convert approximately 10,000 documents into pdf format. (No, I'm not exaggerating.) I have searched and found various Applescripts that will do it for Word documents, but have even been unsuccessful using those. Each of my attempts ends up with some sort of error.
The documents are in mixed formats: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, OpenOffice (.odt), and .jpeg, I even have some Clarisworks/Appleworks files, but those I'm happy to deal with separately if need be.

Using automator to delete files with out moving them to the trash

My boss and I work for a school district and we have been fight the ever losing battle of keeping kids from using usb drives and ipods on the computers. We have it fixed on the server accounts so they can't. But the local accounts they can do as they please. So we have found the files that we need to remove Example ( IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext, IPodDriver.kext, ITunesPhoneDriver.kext ) I have tried to use automator to delete these files by creating an application. Well it can't remove them because its need sudo access. So no im trying to figure out how to create a apple script to do so. I know once the files are removed the machines needs to restarted. So im not sure how to include a restart command too.
Any help on how to get this working would greatly appreciated. We have over a 600 machines to do this to. I know that there maybe mixed feeling about removing these functions but we have to fallow our board digital computer policy Primarily ever since the RIAA has been cracking down.

I'd use the Terminal...
In Terminal type man mv & man reboot
You can execute those commands preceded by sudo, like...
sudo mv /Library/Extensions/IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext /Library/Extensions/IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext.old
This one just renames it, but you could move it wherever you want.

Sorry to hop into this post.
I have an inverted need to this one.
I subscribe to Fotolia's images.
For some odd reason I have never been able to ascertain, they deliver the image in a folder labelled with the image number eg Fotolia_57922194
Inside the folder is an Adobe Illustrator file labelled "contents.eps" with jpeg preview labelled "contents.jpg"
All the files are labelled "contents". It plays havoc with layouts when you insert them all.
I would like to create a smart folder with attached Automator workflow that batch works on Fotolia folders dropped onto it:
1. Copies the folder name
2. Renames the "contents.eps" inside the folder to for example Fotolia_57922194.eps
3. Moves the renamed .eps out of the enclosing folder to inside the Smart folder
4. Trashes the remaining folder with .jpg preview
I really have no idea where to begin.
Any wiser soul out there, can point me where to start?

I am using OS X 10.7.3 and shared files with OSX 10.7.3 server. I want to use automator to identify certain files in a shared folder and move them to another shared folder.
I tried this on my non-server 10.7.3 with files on the HD and it works fine. But when I try to use it with shared files, although it will get the folder, it won't identify the contents and simply hangs.
Any thoughts?

Duplicate File Finder

Wondering if anyone knows of a good software application (and has some experience using it) that finds duplicate files on my computer, and/or any of my network drives and other computers on the network. I'm hoping I can find something that will search all my drives and find all the files by the same name and size, or even duplicate files when some may have been renamed. I've googled it, and found some Windows utilities that claim to do this, but see nothing for the Mac. Any suggestions will be appreciated. I have an iMac, a Macbook and a Windows (Vista) computer on my wireless network, using a 1TB Time Capsule with 2 Lacie 500GB HDDs attached to it. Thanks in advance.

At the moment I will suggest "Spring Cleaning" v.10 from Smith Micro http://www.smithmicro.com/default.tpl?group=product_full&sku=SCM10XX
It will find all the duplicate files, even the ones that were renamed.
I use this program also to find and remove all my empty folders.
Very handy for consolidating all your backup files and archives. Batch file renaming is also supported and much more other power features.

Batch Rename of External Drives Using Automator

OK...So this is my very first mac and I have only been using it for 3 days. I am using Automator to batch copy files to an external USB flash drive, then Eject the drive. But I also need to be able to RENAME the device, BEFORE I eject it. We are receiving a shipment of 1000 USB flash drives so manually renaming each device will be a LARGE task. Having it automate with the file copy will be much better. Since I am new to Mac, I have no idea how to create an Apple Script to rename a USB disk. Any assistance you can provide is much appreciated.

there is "rename finder items" action but for some reason it doesn't work on disks when I try it. but you can always do it using "run apple script" action.
something along the following lines will do it but you'll have to adjust it according to your situation. it will rename the first item passed into this action.

Using automator to keep folders synced

Hi,
I'm looking for a way to use automator to copy a file / folder to a shared server drive anytime anything is added to a specific directory.
More specifically, What I'm trying to do exactly is have all my music back uped from my itunes directory to an identical server drive. I a'm a mobile DJ, and I have have a lot of music that I need to have updated backups of. I currently have a server share already set up, and I manually copied everything from my itunes folder over to it, the only problem is; every time i update of modify some music, i have to go back into my itunes folder and sort by 'date modified' and copy just those files over.
The script needs to be able to copy whenever anything is added or modified to the itune directory, and needs to be able to overwrite existing data on the server backup folder.

i am running the latest version of Yosemite just to clarify.
My question is, is it possible to use automator to automatically copy a file thats added to a folder to a separate folder?
to clarify, i have a drive account that has all my university work stored in a folder called university, i also have a folder on my HD called university.
When i work on something i open it from the university folder on my HD, and when im done working i have to copy the file manually into the drive folder.
Is there any way that i can use automator to detect when a file gets saved in a folder on my hard drive and automatically copy it to my drive folder?

I do not use command line and tried to use ZapResourceForksAMAub_1.2 which I downloadedand instaled the Zap Resource Forks.action. Next I tried to use their sample copy-zap-rsrc.workflow in Snow Leopardon my Mac Pro. The 3 different steps are displayed in Automator but there is no place to put in which folder (on my deskto) to copy, and remove the resource forks from the graphic files.
Can sombody please step me through this please please.

Delete duplicates using Automator or applescript??

Every time I move a photo from one iPhoto album to another I seem to create another duplicate-I'm really annoyed at the way iPhoto is written -who wants to go into a huge, unsorted- iPhoto library and delete stuff? Is there a way I can use automator or apple script to delete a photo from one album when it is moved to another? Also , when I use PhotoShop Elements to Browse for an album made in iPhoto-the only way I can find an album is to go through every year-iPhoto can't be this bad , can it?
One more question-If I delete a photo in an album, it still remains in the library, how do I delete that without sorting through hundreds of pictures or using spotlight?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Photos you add to an album are only links to the original photo in the library. You are not duplicating files in doing so. The only time a file is duplicated is when you edit a photo and then there is a modified version created and placed in the Modified folder. You don't want to go about deleting files from within iPhoto Library folder via the Finder - Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder.
Albums in iPhoto are only virtual containers. There is no way you can find it and it's contents via PSE's browser. It does not exist outside of iPhoto. When you move a photo from one album to another and you don't want it in the first album you'll just have to delete it manually from that album. Remember if you delete a photo from the main library you'll be deleting every occurrence of it in your library.
If you're trying to use Photoshop Elements to edit a photo, you don't need nor want to open it via the Finder. Instead, use iPhoto's preferences to use PSE as the editor of choice when you double click on a thumbnail in iPhoto. The only caveat to that is if you create a layered image or otherwise create a file that requires you to save it as a psd file, you must either flatten it and save as a jpg without a name change or do a Save As to the desktop and then import it as a new file. Any subsequent edit on that psd file can be make normally.

Using automator to render and save hundred's of LT files

hello. I have a few hundred LiveType projects that I need to render to QT movie--need to make them eneditable but still usable in FCP--So, does anyone know if I can do this with Automator, i.e. point it at a folder and let it open, render, save to different folder and close (rinse/repeat)?
Or is there an applescript that can do this?

Well, I was able to use automator, somewhat... where the hiccup occurs is when the file needs to be saved. If the render time takes more than a minute or so, then automator chokes. Fortunately, most of my files took less time to render, so the majority could be automated. When a hiccup occurred, the mac let out an alert sign and I manually rendered that file(s) and set automator up again until the next hiccup.
there is a "timeout" selection in Automator for each step, but try as I may to get the save step to delay 3 minutes, it wouldn't work. I tried everything.

Create an iPod or iphone version - is there any way to avoid duplicate files OR automating a new name for the new file?

I have two devices for my videos. An ipod classic and an Ipad. I would prefer to keep the highest resolution possible but also will be travelling and it will be useful to have a large archive with me.
I have found that many of the videos I have are "incompatible" with my ipod classic and am in the process of using the "create an ipod or iphone version" but this results in a duplicate file in my itunes library that is identical in everyway (except size and this can be bigger or smaller).
When you buy a HD video off itunes, you get both versions but only one file populates in the itunes libary.
Is there anyway that when itunes "creates the ipod or iphone version", it can do automatically merge these two files so you only see one file in your library? And then it will automatically sync the appropriate file with the appropriate device?
Or is there a way to have itunes "create the ipod or iphone version" and have it automatically label it with the name "XXX (ipod version"?
I am finding it very annoying to manually change all the titles on all the files being created.

When you open a Word document with Pages you get a translated-to-Pages file & the original Word document is unchanged. There are programs that will save over the original file such as LibreOffice. Pages will not.
