Using FCP for live video feed

Hi,
I'm currently shooting with the new HVX200 Panasonic camera. We're using a small, 7" hand-held HD monitor to use for focus-pulling, but I'd like to be able to use a computer monitor or laptop for a live video feed. (director's monitor)
We've considered using the component-out to go into a Component-VGA adapter for a computer monitor, but I'm wondering if we can do a direct feed using FireWire into FCP or something.
Anyone have any experience doing a computer-monitor setup for use with these kinds of cameras?
Thanks for the help!

hey there RI,
if you've tried something similar on your iMac & had no problems it's reasonable to think/believe it will work on your MBP, w/ this caveat: the 400 & 800 ports are actually on the same buss, so the 800 port will handle it's data at the lower(400) rate if there is a device on each port. shouldn't affect any editing w/ the drive once the cam is removed from the MBP. it should the run @ the higher rate.
good luck.

  • Is there a way to use Illustrator to draw over a live video feed coming from my microscope?

Hi, we use illustrator to draw (trace) over static images of mite specimens taken under a microscope. Although this works, it would be much better to be able to draw directly from the live video feed coming from my microscope. The specimens are dead, so they are not moving around, however, we need to focus down through the specimen in order to see all details. We normally take montage images, but because the specimens are clear there are many artifacts present and we frequently have to consult the specimen under the microscope to double check things. My students and I have hundreds of drawings to complete and are looking for a way to streamline the process. If we could avoid making montage images and draw direct from the video feed, it would revolutionize the way we approach our research. Is there a way to display the video feed and then overlay Illustrator so that we can directly trace over the image (we use a Wacom tablet, but that shouldn't make a difference) so we can focus at different levels and draw the entire organism?
    Thanks for your help

Maybe it's possible to have live video in Illustrator, but you would most certainly need to write your own plugin.
So this community would be suitable:

  • Live video feed from camera and other PC

My Mac Pro is being shipped as we speak. I'm new to this, and not up with all the lingo so please bear with me. I'm hoping you all can help me figure out what I'm trying to accomplish:
I currently VJ (Video Jockey) with certain software on a PC and send that video mix out (DVI or VGA) to a Plasma TV. I just bought a Canon A1 camera and a Mac Pro w/FCP studio. How can I mix the live video feed of the Canon with the video feed from PC (preferably in HD)?
I also want to be able to record and edit the footage from the Canon later.
I was told by the guys at the Apple store that I could do this using FCP multicam. Is that true? I read a couple posts on here that say FCP is just editing software and can't do live feed. Then what is the purpose of multicam? Please help. Thanks-
    mac pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Two 2.66GHz Dual-Core

The Apple people probably didn't understand that you wanted a live mix. FCP can't help you there.
MultiCam is an FCP feature "post-switching" multicamera recordings for that live-to-tape look. It is fairly complex, and especially with only two "cameras" you would be muchn better to start off editing them on the timeline.
As for a live switch you need a video switcher. Outside the realm of FCP, but http://bhphoptovideo.com is a great place to do research.
Then if you're really serious you can record both feeds plus optionally the live switched output for further manipulation in FCP or elsewhere.

  • How to use iSight for webstreaming video

hello, recently my wife and I purchased a dog(mini bulldog). she is obsessed with the dog. the dog stays home durring the day. she would like for me to place our laptop in the dog room to provide a live video feed. is there any possible way to do this?

"how do you set up the webpage?"
    According to EvoCams website:
    +"Built-in web server included+
+EvoCam also has a built-in web server, allowing you to connect directly to EvoCam using any Java-capable browser and view your webcam. The built-in server can be password protected, and you can customize the HTML to give your webcam a personalized look."+
"is there a free software that will do this? "
Since the wify is +"obsessed with the dog,"+ then she shouldn't mind paying $30.
Search Google, VersionTracker & MacUpdate for freebies.

  • Live Video Feed

Is there a way to connect a camera to your mac to run live video without using firewire? Is it possible to use an S-video connection to a video card? I want to be able to move away from my mac and firewire doesn't give the distance I need. S-video cable can be up to 150 feet. I have a small program called Video Viewer for live video. It works well.
    Any Thoughts?
    Thanks

You can go to 150 feet with firewire. I think the limit is 300 feet. You just need to buy a cable with an amp in it.... Just do a Google search and read.

  • Detecting Bandwidth Quality for Live Video Streaming

    Hi,
We have an application that is using FMS to  share slides (swf, jpg, etc) with another client. We added a video as an option. We would like to verify as often as possible the bandwidth quality between communications in order to suggest the user to close video if we notice bandwidth is not optimal.
We've been experimenting doing a bandwidth detection every 60 seconds, but I am wondering if there are specific guidelines to do this for live video, like how many times one should verify bandwidth? Is it ok to take one reading or should we take a few readings and then average out?
Taking into consideration that every time we test bandwidth fms seems to flood the connection to figure out the bandwidth, I was wondering if anyone has some insight into this.
    Kind regards.

  • Insert live video feed in Keynote

    Hello,
How could I insert a live video feed in a running Keynote presentation ?
Source could be webcam, iPhone video output, etc.
I'd like to keep the background of the Keynote presentation while the live video plays on top.
    Thx for your help.
    Benoit

Here's how I got it working today (slight modifications to Unami's guide):
    1) Install Quartz Composer (it comes with the XCode Developement Utilities on your OSX installation disc)
    *2) Download the KinemeCore ( http://kineme.net/files/release/KinemeCore/KinemeCore-0.5.1bInstaller.pkg.zip ) and install.
    3) Open Quartz Composer and create a blank composition.
*4) Click on the KinemaCore menu in the top menu (between Window and Help) and select KinemaCore Preferences. Click on the Unsafe Mode tab. For each of the required applications on the left, check "Safe" for Video Input on the right. (I checked Video Input as "Safe" for every application, just in case.)
    5) Open the Patch Library, then add a "Video Input" and a "Billboard" patch
( To select another than the default video input device, select the Video Input patch, open the Patch Inspector and change the input device in the Settings tab )
    6) Connect the "Image" output of the Video Input Patch to the "Image" input of the "Billboard" Patch (click and drag from the white dot next to "Image")
    7) Save this composition and close Quartz Composer
    8) Now, open Keynote and drag the .qtz file you just saved into your presentation
For some reason, Keynote will occasionally not allow me to drag/drop the .qtz file into its window. Closing that window and starting a new document fixes this.
    Hope that helps.

  • Advice on used mbp for photo/ video tasks.

Good afternoon everyone. I'd just like to pick the brains of some of the experts here regarding purchasing a used mbp for photo/ video. for about $1300 (preferably less) which models would you look at? I'm open to 15 and 17 inch variants. The 13 is just too small. I've been trying to find a 15" with 2.4ghz and 16gb ram but they are very hard to come by in my price range. Is there going to be a huge difference in speed between a 2.2, 2.3, or 2.4 i7 quad core processor? I'm also aware that some models came with superior graphics cards although I can't remember exactly which ones.
one more question, regarding the high res matte screens, are these going to make my guis look weird? I actually had a 2014 13" mbp retina and was hugely disappointed in its performance and took it back. The retina display was not compatible with photoshop And made it look awful. This happened with some web pages as well. Is this going to happen with the high res screens available previous to the retina technology?
Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions.
One last thing. Am I better off waiting/ spending a few hundred more and looking at more recent units such as a 15" retina? I don't like that the ram can't be upgraded and that they can't be repaired by the user as easily but the lighter weight is certainly a nice feature.

I suppose what I'm asking is whether there are particular configurations that were better than others that I should look out for. you illustrated my point when you mentioned your friend's older but faster mbp. I believe sometimes there are configurations that seem to work better than others despite one being newer or having 'faster' or 'superior' hardware. I'm aware of the advantages of ssd's and had one in my last mbp along with maxed out ram.
Regarding the newer mbp 13 retina model my solution was to take it back. I simply was not happy paying more for a computer that was more expensive but didn't perform as well as my older model I had just sold. Also the size was not going to work.
Out of interest can anyone explain these anomolies in speed between newer and older models. Logic suggests that a newer model with faster processor and more ram should be faster but why is this not always the case?
Here's my predicament: 15" mpb with 2.4ghz i7 quad core and 16gb ram and ssd are running around $1400 used. This is more than I would expect to pay for a mid to late 2011 laptop but they seem to hold their value very well. There is a significant price jump between say a 2.2ghz model and a 2.4. Am I going to notice more performance on the 2.4 or is it not a big deal to save a few hundred bucks? Or do I just spend a few hundred more for a newer retina model? I just don't want to end up with a computer I cannot upgrade or work on myself and that is not a significant performance upgrade from my last model And doesn't even have a SuperDrive or additional HDD. I hope that makes sense.
So with all that said and considering that I use my laptop for photography and small amounts of video are there any particular models anyone would recommend Around the $1300 mark? Or other suggestions?

  • Using Garageband for live performances

I would love to hear from anyone who uses GB for live performances. I'm especially interested in how you store and play your music; ie direct from your computer drive, on flash card or thumb drive etc. I'm a one man show with guitar, flute, and keyboard. I'm really new at this and any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hey Gillermo... I might have to eat my words. I had a good think about this last night and I have come up with a plan. Just shooting from the hip and so might need some refinement, but here goes...
The problem as I saw it with Garageband was two fold...
    1. how to lay out several songs or groups of pre recorded tracks and tracks with effects on them for my vocal and guitar and
    2. lack of an easy to use controller of some sort that worked with GB to minimize mouse use, speed up transfer/choosing between songs and organize my set layout with a structure of some sort.
As a result of mucking around with my Korg NanoKontrol and using the plugin for GarageBand, I can now envision a logical system for using GB for Live performance as a one person show.
The NanoK has the ability to control 8 tracks at a time. You have use of Volume, Pan, Mute, Solo as well as the transport buttons when using scene number 1 on the NK. It has the ability to scroll through groups of 8 tracks at a time with dedicated buttons on fader bank 9.
As a simple example, lets take 4 tracks 1. a track dedicated to vocal with some effects on it to taste 2. a track dedicated to guitar with some effects to taste 3. prerecorded bass track (file bounced down to mp3 or similar) and 4. a drum/percussion track set up like track 3.
Now what you have is the use of 4 tracks for your performance ( there are a few other options though). Now if you load tracks 5-6 with the bass and drums of another song and 7-8 with the tracks of yet another song you now have 3 songs you can play/sing from the first fader bank set. These are all visible on the laptop screen.
Now thinking in groups of 8 tracks, the 2nd set of 8 tracks (tracks 9-16) is set up in a similar way with tracks 9-10 duplicates of 1-2 (vox & guitar) and 3 sets of bass and drums (or what ever). You would name each set of bass and drum tracks with the name of the song so you could always find out where you are. You could also apply instrument icons for easier identification.
So starting with fader bank 1 and tracks 1-4 un muted, you would have muted all the other tracks in the entire set ( before you started your show obviously). Hit play, sing your song... hit stop. Hit rewind, mute tracks 3-4, un mute tracks 5-6, hit play when ready and away you go with song No.2. Repeat for song 3. Once you have completed these 3 songs and made sure all of the tracks are muted via the Nano, press the button that moves the controls to the next set of 8 tracks or 3 songs.
Now in terms of performance there would be some trial and error needed to find out how big the project file could be before there were computer performance issues. I read somewhere there was an upper limit of approx 240 tracks in GB. In reality you would be thinking in terms of how many songs there are in your sets. So in this scenario if you had 15 songs in each set you would only need 40 tracks or 5 sets of 8 fader banks.
To minimize performance issues with projects getting on the large side, in between your sets you could close the project with set one in it and open the project file with set 2 in it.
A couple of other layout options would be to use an entire bank of faders for each song. You could have between 5-8 tracks usable per song. You could have a combination of audio, .wav/mp3, electric guitar and software instrument tracks. Simply go through the mute/unmute process as you scroll through your songs.
You could also lock/unlock the odd track for another level of performance optimization, but you would have to use the mouse pad for this as it can't be done via the NK.
The pro's for this type of system are
    1. Complete control of mixing vol & pan for the venue you are in
    2. Very simple control at your finger tips, 2 or more faders at a time, limited mouse use
    3. A logical frame work to create your sets.
    4. You can stay in GarageBand, no need for another software program.
    5. Very cheap investment.
The Con's would all revolve around your computer spec's.
    1. Max out your RAM.
    2. Be selective with effects
    3. System HD speed.
Note, I am assuming my vox and guitar are going through and audio interface with outs to an amp or PA of some sort.
I am going to have to try this out. I really DO NOT LIKE Ableton Live. It is heavy on CPU and gets really deep very quickly. If this works then I will have an Live Serial# for sale.
