Using IDE while trainning for cert exam

Hello there !...
I'm training for certificatión exam SCJP 5. I was just thinking about if and IDE like eclipse could affect the learning process or something like that, what would be your opinion about using and IDE like eclipse during this process?, any advantages or disadvantages... I mean, non-experiencied programmers needs an IDE ?...
Thanks in advice... your opinion it's really important

Hello...
Well I'm use to eclipse... Sincerely, but with this IDE I code faster than preparing the windows enviroment to code. But, again, now you said "dependent"... It makes me ask myself if I'm dependant and yes. That's the answer... =(I'd put it aside for a while then!
But I'm interested in this opinion: +"the ability of a developer to mimic the compiler is not a measure of the developer"+, I'm thinking about it and with Eclipse for example sometimes I don't even need to compile because it says where is the error...Exactly. In other words, you're never actually challenged to think about whether or make sure your syntax is OK. You just allow Eclipse to do that thinking for you.
And that's OK in almost all circumstances. As a developer, I'd rather delegate as much work the the IDE as possible and concentrate on things the environment/compiler can't do for me: logic decisions, design, etc. But when you're studying for SCJP, it removes an element of practice that would otherwise be very beneficial.
But my point of that quote was simply to say that knowing the syntax thoroughly doesn't make one a good developer or programmer. You can teach the stupidest computer Java syntax. Being a good programmer is about sound, defensible implementation of a design, etc.
Another question. Where do you write your code ? and do all the coding process as a new java programmer and as a developer? (personal question) =)Eclipse when I have the choice. But I'm not actively studying for the SCJP.

  • Tough question, but how much study is usually required for cert. exams

I have been working for 3-4 years as a Configuration Manager administrator, mostly in CM12. I have strong areas, like OSD and application deployment, and weaker areas, like PKI/https and Compliance Settings. I consider myself to be an advanced technician
    or engineer.
I am considering System Center Configuration Manager certification (70-243), but am wondering how much of an endeavor this is likely to be. Can others that have taken this or similar certificate exams please advise me? In weighing the value of certification,
I am wondering if I will be likely to succeed with a 100 hour commitment, or is it going to much more substantial a time investment?
I know this will vary wildly depending on how quickly a person learns and what they already know, but would love to have some idea before I decide to go down this path. I welcome your feedback and experience.

    Hi Gary-
As you mentioned, the time it takes to properly prepare for an exam varies quite a bit.  So it will be helpful if other people chime in with their experiences too.  For most Microsoft exams, there are topics that you know and work with, topics
that you've read about but not worked with, and topics that are new to you.  Let me break down how this impacts the amount of time required to study:
Topics that you know and work with.  Some people might think that these topics don't require study time.  I think they do require study time.  That's because most admins have a specific method that they use in their work.
That might not be the method that the exam tests you on.  For example, in ConfigMgr you might use the management console for the  majority of your work.  The exam may test you on PowerShell.  It may ask a basic question about performing
a task that you know how to do in the management console but the only answer choices are PowerShell.  Or, they may test you on a new feature in R2 when your environment isn't running R2.  I recommend that you review the latest enhancements to R2
and spend a bit of time investigating alternate methods to perform tasks.  I estimate about 4 or 5 hours on this.
Topics that you've read about but not worked with.  These topics require study.  I recommend that you read about them and work with them.  For example, you should read about configuration items AND implement them in a lab
environment.  There are several learning styles and often people don't know which style is most effective for them.  Some learn by reading, some learn by doing, some learn by hearing, etc.  Typically, you will retain more knowledge by combining
the learning styles.  For me, I typically start by playing with a technology in my lab for a few hours.  Afterward, I will read about it.  Then maybe go back to the lab.  For others, it may be different.  But definitely experiment
to see what feels right for you.  I recommend that you avoid just reading about something that you've never worked with because it will make the exam difficult to pass.
Topics that are new to you.  These topics require the most study.  As Alberto pointed out, use the Skills Measured section.  Print it out.  Each time you finish reading and exploring a technology and feel comfortable,
cross it off.  For these new topics, definitely get your hands on them in a lab.  Even if you only spend a few minutes with each one.
For me, I usually allocate about 2 weeks to study for an exam.  But study time during that two weeks comes in between regular work and family stuff.  Maybe a couple of hours a day total and a few extra hours the day before the exam.  In the
past, I've allocated as little as 1 week to prepare for an exam.  For beta exams, I've walked in several times without any preparation.  In all cases, I always think that I should've spent a couple of extra hours.
If you've never taken a certification exam or a Microsoft certification exam, you'll want to spend more time than others who have taken exams.  But, one thing I typically tell people is not to spend too much time studying.  It will work against
you.  If you spend 8 weeks studying, by the half way point you will start forgetting the stuff you studied in the first week.  When the exam comes up, you'll have probably forgotten half of the stuff you studied.  I recommend a maximum of 4
weeks of study for an exam like this.  A book dedicated to 70-243 will be helpful but should be combined with hands on time in a lab environment.  If you don't have a lab to work in, check out the free TechNet labs for Configuration Manager at
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/virtuallabs/bb467605.aspx.  Finally, don't worry about failing an exam.  It is often the one thing that can help you the most in your exam
preparation!  I advise that you schedule the exam.  Pick a date a couple of weeks out and commit by scheduling it.  If you fail, you will know exactly what you need to do before you take the exam again!

  • Using features while waiting for activation

Reading an FAQ I am told that I can use iphone features while I wait for "further activation" while my phone number is being migrated. But I can't seem to be able to do this, anyone have any ideas?

I'm in the same rocky boat as a lot of people. I waited 6-7 hours in line to get an iPhone from the Fifth Ave NYC store with my friend. We shot home quickly on the subway, all excited to get this baby up and running. My friend's iPhone had no problem going through the activation process via iTunes, but he is still waiting to have his service transfered from Sprint, so he can make calls on AT&T but can't receive any. But, at least his phone has been activated, so he can play with all the nice little features.
I, on the other hand, got a notice at the end of the iTunes activation process saying that they basically need to take more time to activate my iPhone. Almost immediately, I got two email messages in my inbox. One says,
"Phone service is scheduled to be disconnected on your current phone at or after 10:00 PM EDT on June 30. Please check your email and be prepared to reconnect and activate your iPhone before that time. Please call 877-800-3701 if you'd like to make other arrangements."
Six minutes later, I got another email saying,
"AT&T is now processing your activation. You will receive an email confirmation once your activation is complete."
In other words, my LONG-AWAITED iPhone is just sitting here looking pretty. And, here I am, sitting here looking ticked off. I love Apple like you wouldn't believe, but this is really disappointing, although I probably should be pointing the finger AT&T's way. Since my iPhone hasn't even been activated in iTunes, the only thing the phone does is turn on to show me a picture of the earth and an "slide bar" telling me to "Slide For Emergency." I can't use any other functions.
I was with Sprint for about 7 years with no late payments ever. I've been told by customer service that I'm one of their more valued customers, since I've been with them for so long and I always pay on time. This leads me to believe that it's some problem with AT&T. What a disappointment that I might not be able to use my iPhone for over a day after I bought it.
Take note, Apple & AT&T. Learning experiences for sale.

  • Implications of using a while loop for a wait.

    Hi,
I need to make a thread wait until a condition is met before it can continue. I am currently using:
    while(locked){
          //Wait
}What would be a better way of doing this as i need to keep the CPU usage as low as possible.
    Thanks for any help.

Yes, thanks for the link. I am reading it now.
Its not too easy becasue i am not writing pure java classes.... (Hard to explain) I dont have access to all threads.
While im reading this could you re-asure me that im thinking about this in the right way (or not).
I have one thread that executes some stuff then sets a global variable to true (locked = true). This thread then needs to wait until the global variable is set back to false (by another thread).
Another thread does some processing and then sets the global variable to false (locked = false) meaning that the original thread can carry on.
At the moment i am using the above while loop to wait but im sure there is a better way of doing this.
    Thanks

  • Can I continue to use Ideas until Draw gets needed updates?

Draw has a great list of new features that got me really excited to try it out. But a few key differences between Illustrator Draw and Adobe Ideas—specifically, features that got dropped—means it's unlikely I can really switch right now, given my current workflow. Here are a few of the features I've come to rely on in Ideas that are not included in Illustrator Draw:
-Export as vector pdf. I honestly can't believe this one isn't included. Essentially, this means that anyone who isn't paying the monthly fee for a Creative Cloud subscription cannot use Draw in conjunction with Illustrator on the desktop. While Ideas could at least email a vector pdf, Draw offers jpg (jpg!) only, or a png to Creative Cloud storage, which pretty much defeats the purpose of the app for users on even slightly older versions of Illustrator.
-Wacom stylus support isn't working, despite what the FAQ says. (A recent post here suggests this will be fixed in an update.) Giving up pressure-sensitivity is a deal breaker.
-No portrait mode. This isn't the end of the world, but as someone who does a lot of portrait work, having my toolbars adjust to my orientation is a great help when working. (Also said to be coming in an update.)
-No color picker. Near-essential for working from a source photo. Having to return to the color palette/history each time is a huge time drain.
And while I'm here, I'll beg for one other feature I'd love to see: support for background transparency is something I always wished for in Ideas but never got. Would be a great help for anyone making logos or other graphics that are laid over other content.
What I'm wondering about for now is the fate of Adobe Ideas—can I continue to use it while waiting for Illustrator Draw to be updated, or will it no longer be able to sync/export? And when Draw is updated, will I be able to get my Ideas drawings imported into the updated app? (I've already done the "one-time fetch" of my Ideas files.) Hope all that doesn't sound like too much complaining; I'm really excited about the direction the app is taking!

You can export via email, but the file is a jpg in Draw. Ideas sent pdfs, Draw does not. So unless you have a paid CC subscription, you can't get a vector file into Illustrator anymore.
The background transparency issue is about using Draw while on the go, without importing into Illustrator. Any image saved from the app has a white background. Of course it's easy to save with a transparent background in Illustrator, but it would be nice to have that option in the app itself. (In other words, if I don't have anything in the Photo layer, I wish it would be transparent, not filled with white.)
So if I'm using the app while mobile, I can't, for instance, make a quick logo drawing and lay it on top of a client's screenshot to give them an idea of how it might look.

  • Tryout of *current* version while waiting for CS3?

I'm an InDesign and Illustrator user who may be
picking up Dreamweaver (either individually or as part of one of
the new suites) when CS3 comes out. I'd like to try learning it at
home before I have to use it at work. I notice there's no Tryout
version, and that the Dreamweaver web site says that a Tryout
version will be available 6-8 weeks after CS3 is released.
Is there any way to get a hold of the
current version as a Tryout? That way I could learn how to
use it while waiting for the new version to arrive.
    Thanks.

No. But I'll whip one up for you....
Always use document relative links unless you have a good
    reason not to.
    GOOD REASONS
    1. Document relative links don't work
    2. You are using include files that link to pages at a
    variety of folder
    locations in the site

  • Can i use "Oracle Database 12c: Performance Management and Tuning " training for getting certification on "Oracle Database 11g: Performance Tuning 1Z0-054"

i have taken "Oracle Database 12c: Performance Management and Tuning new" training from oracle university. Now i would like to get certified on "Oracle Database 11g: Performance Tuning 1Z0-054" exam. Is it possible ?

I essentially endorse and refer you to Matthews' and John's post above.
I would differ with slightly with Matthew because my guess is you would often be able to use like for like 12c training for an 11g certification ( I believe there are precedents).  BEFORE ANYONE ASKS THE OTHER WAY DOESN'T HAPPEN.
.... but totally concur with Matthew you would ill advised to procede on that basis without one of:
    - This being advertised as possible on the website : e.g. https://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=654&get_params=p_id:169 ... option 2 show courses.
    - Confirmation from Brandye
    - Confirmation from an Oracle Certification Support Web Ticket ( http://education.oracle.com/pls/eval-eddap-dcd/OU_SUPPORT_OCP.home?p_source=OCP )
... The more common (and in my opinion usually better) way would be get your 11g DBA OCP ( or higher first) and then take the 1z0-054.  I am almost certain they will accept your 12c course for the 11g DBA OCP.
If you are choosing the route of not being a 11g (or 12c ) DBA OCP first but are on option 2 and relying on the course for certification then the issue is more in the balance and you are even more strongly advised to get confirmation before proceding (remember if the rules need to be changed for you only then any profit out of the exam is lost).
In general my understanding is Oracle would prefer to encourage people to train on the latest version of product that is available for training  and will prefer to avoid restrictions which would cause you to train at a lower version.  ( This is simply my guess at Oracle University Policy ... personal opinion only).
Having said all I have said I'd encourage you to go with the advice of the earlier two posts.

I am thinking of sitting this exam and was wondering if anyone could recommend a decent book. Which book do they use for the course? I looked for the Peachpit book but couldn't find it.
    Thanks.

If you click on the Peachpit Press page here:

You'll see the book you are looking for. This book is very similar to the one used in the class, and is a great way to prepare for the exam.

my usb that i have been using on my computer for a while suddenly stopped working, but is still glowing and letting me know that it is connected, but not showing up in disk utility

Either the physical drive or the enclosure electronics has failed. The light you are seeing is powered by the USB connection, the power, electricity, all USB ports put out. That doesn't mean the actual physical hard drive or the USB to SATA bus electronics are working properly. If it doesn't show in Disk Utility then it is DEAD.
Most of the time it is the enclosures electronics that fail. Removing the physical drive from the enclosure and put it in another enclosure or using a SATA to USB adapter, one that has it's own AC power supply, might allow you to get the files off the drive.

The same emailed .xls files still open on my ipad using ios5 while viewing email like they did on my iphone prior to upgrading. I have no special software like numbers or anything else installed on either device. Just using the default viewer provided by apple for viewing email.

The attachment is an .xls excel 97-2003 spreadsheet. I viewed the file in the email and did not edit it with any software. I can forward the file to anyone that is may want to check it out to see if they can help me. I was wondering if there was some way of forcing another ios6 install on my phone and maybe that would solve it.

No. iCloud has nothing to do with Time Machine on your computer, and as long as your computer has synched all desired content and settings to iCloud, not only does the modem not need to be switched on, your computer doesn't need to be on either.
