Using iMovie to prep videos for inclusion in iPhoto - right choice?

I like to use iPhoto to view my photos and video clips, since it automatically shows things in chronological order, and with iPhoto 09 it interleaves photos and video clips nicely. Works great with my current digicam which sources both stills and video clips.
I have a bunch of older video on miniDV, imported from miniDV camcorder into iMovie, with all its date/time information. These are currently in .DV file format on my hard drive.
What is the easiest way to get these clips into iPhoto? The DV clips are huge, so I tried making an iMovie project (painful to do this for each clip separately .. but iMovie image stabilization probably makes it worthwhile) and found the exported video has lost the original date/time info.
Help? suggestions?
Is there a way to put date/time information onto the exported movie so that iPhoto will use it?
Thanks!

I agree with Sheryl for producing movies.
For viewing movies, I still would not use iPhoto. I would use iTunes for the ease of cover flow, organization, and metadata. Also ease of transferring to AppleTV, iPhone, iPod, etc. Also, iTunes makes it easy to view movies on your Mac through Front Row.
iPhoto has one advantage. If you want to do movies on MobileMe that are password protected, storing movies in iPhoto is the way to go.

    Hello przemlo
Yes, you can use iMovie for either for Mac or iOS to make movies and publish them to YouTube. Check out the articles below to know more on how to publish the video.

I use imovie to create videos. When I burn the video to DVD and play it back there is digital breakup in the playback from the DVD. The digital breakup does not show in playback on the computer. I understand there is a file I need to delete and reboot the computer and imovie will rebuild the file in the program. Help!

My method is to use the DAW in standard recording mode, and set up the camcorder entirely separately.  After recording, I automate the audio mix with fader moves and effects, then export ("bounce to disk") a full-fidelity AIFF, 16-bit 48 kHz stereo file (most videos use 48, not 44.1).  I use iMovie '11 to import the video from the camera, then import the stereo audio file and match it up to the camera audio by dragging it into the iMovie Project.  Make the waveforms visible, it's not too hard to align.
Then, use iMovie's "Export as Quicktime" feature.  Here, by going through the menus and options, you can control the audio compression (for example, 256k instead of 128, although 128 seems to be enough for YouTube).
AppleMan1958 posted a YouTube video about controlling iMovie's export options that may help:

  • Using iMovie to Capture Video

    Hi all,
With a lot of my projects, I log and capture using Final Cut. However, when I have footage I don't want to log (I have about 11 minutes of video of firefighters dealing with a blaze across the street), and I just want to capture it and edit it down a bit, I have been using iMovie. I like how iMovie creates a new media file upon "scene break" which I don't know if Final Cut does. Once my footage is captured to disk, I just drag the media files into my Final Cut project.
The problem is that these media files, for whatever reason, play back very choppy in the viewer. When I bring them into the timeline however, they play smoothly and I can jog or shuttle or whatever easily. I'm thinking it might have somehting to do with the fact that the audio needs to be rendered on the fly or something...
Has anyone experienced this? Or can you suggest a way I can capture easily with Final Cut (in the way that iMovie captures my footage)?
    Thanks,
    Cyrus

As you've discovered it can be done but after all the effort to move between the 2 and then render, you could have captured the entire 11 minute clip using capture now (self flagellates as chastisement for recommending using capture now) or better still simply setting an in point at the start and end point at the end and making the proverbial cup of tea/pouring a Guinness (Zeb) or an Islay single malt (X) etc etc while waiting for the capture to complete, then scrubbed thro' the entire clip for the best bits (err.. AKA editing) and this must be the longest single sentence seen around these parts in a long time so I'll shut up, you get the point.
By the way, I don't have a solution to the create a separate clip on scene break problem unless you move to HDV.

  • Using iMovie to create movies for an iWeb site

    Hi, all:
Relative Mac noob; please be kind. I think I'm going to answer my own question, anyway, but I thought I'd ask... and I'll cross-post in the iWeb section, too.
I am planning to add some movies to my site. I've done the preliminary layout work, and just need to edit and upload the video.
Up to now, I have always used, and am comfortable with, iMovie HD 6. I've never used iMovie '08, even though I installed the iLife '08 upgrade two months ago.
Which version of iMovie - '08 or HD 6 - is better suited to the task of editing digital video that will be added to an iWeb site? One source file is a QuickTime movie I've already got; the rest of the video I'll be shooting in the coming week or so.
I think that the older version of iMovie is going to suit me better, 1) b/c I already know it and 2) it has more powerful editing capabilities, no?
    Thanks,
    Bill from CT

Which version of iMovie - '08 or HD 6 - is better suited to the task of editing digital video that will be added to an iWeb site?
As always, use the editor that has the features needed for the project.

  • I'm embarrassed to ask this: when I click to initiate a new email message in the "From" box it automatically chooses the wrong email address (I have three but use one mainly). How can I get the right choice to appear automatically?

I'm embarassed to ask this: when I click on the new mail icon to write a new email message, in the box "FROM" appears the wrong email address: I have three but mainly use one. How can I correct this so that the right email address appears in the "FROM" box?

I assume this is Apple Mail. Try this:
    Preferences > Accounts > your-first-account
Select Outgoing Mail Server of account/name you wish to use and check Use only this server
    Repeat for other accounts.

  • Using iMovie to make video reel

    Hi there!
I downloaded via iTunes all the shows I've been on and I wanted to take certain scenes from each show to make one video reel for my portfolio.
What program do I have to use to rip certain scenes from each show so it would allow me to put it in iMovie to make one video file so I can upload to Internet? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Roxio Toast maybe?  http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/titanium/  not sure.

  • Is there free software I can use to convert mts videos for Mac

My son gave  me three movies he took on a Canon Vixia that are in mts format. I can only open them in VLC, but I want to put them online and usually use Quicktime to make the files smaller for the web. These files won't open in Quictime or in iPhoto or iMovie or iTunes. I don't want to buy software, because I just need it for these particular movies - I downloaded two kinds of software that worked fine but put a large company logo on the upper left of the movie after it was converted if one wanted to use it free. Can anyone recommend a way that I can make these files compatible so I can upload them to the web?
Alternatively, is there a reliable, inexpensive bit of software I could download so I can process these films?  I'm not averse to paying, but will only use this software once, probably.  Thanks for your help.

    Hi Barbara,
Not aware of a free converter, but there are free players...

    And a trial converter there.

  • Using iMovie to Edit Videos Not Shot on the New iPad

Hello, I am looking to buy an iPad (the new iPad) & I do a lot of traveling & video editing. In iMovie or the iPad can I import pictures & videos taken on my Nikon Coolpix (generic SD camera) and then edit the videos on the iPad like you can on a Macbook or PC? I am going to be traveling for 6 weeks & do not want to have to take a laptop with me so thought I could get an iPad & upload my videos/pictures to my iPad & edit them there and then upload the videos onto the internet. Also, if I make a movie on my iPad with iMovie can I export those movies to my normal computer? Do they save in "Videos" or something? If anyone has any experience or any advice I would gladly appreciate it and have a beer for you while I travel around.
    Thank you

So, help this old man make sure he has it straight...
    1. get the camera connection kit,
    2. import my movies & pictures from my Nikon camera via my sd card via the camera connection kit, to my iPad.
    3. the pictures & movies will be "open-able" via iMovie and then i can edit these externally made movies/pictures on imove on my ipad
    4. then save the movie i edited on ipad
    5. export the new made movies to my computer via itunes.
Is that it? If thats it you will have earned yourself another 10 points for sure
Thank you regardless if my 1-5 is right. I appreciate it.

  • Using MEncoder to convert videos for an Innotab 2

My kids each got Innotab 2s for Christmas, and I'm trying to figure out how to convert some of their favourite video files to something that they can watch on them.  I found a guide here: http://froebe.net/blog/2012/10/03/how-t … eg-solved/ on how to use ffmpeg to do this, but the problem is my source videos often have errors that are making ffmpeg give up.  However, I'm thinking that since mplayer plays them all just fine that MEncoder should be able to as well.
I've been trying for awhile now by going through the MEncoder docs, and by looking up examples, but I'm just not getting it.  So could someone help me here?  The eventual goal is that I'll just make a bash script to convert any video file I have, but I should be able to figure out how to do that from the command line options needed.
Here's the settings recommended by the Innotab 2's manufacturer:
    File Type: AVI
    Resolution: 480 x 272
    Video Codec: MJPEG
    Video Bit rate: 2400kbps
    Frame rate: 15fps
    Audio Sampling Rate: 22.05kHz
    Audio Channel: Mono
    Audio Encoder: PCM
Here's the settings that the guy on this page recommends:
    File Type: AVI
    Resolution: 480 x 272
Video Codec: MPEG4 with a video tag of “XVID”
Video Bit rate: variable or a maximum of 3000kbps
    Frame rate: 29.997fps
    Audio Sampling Rate: 22.05kHz
    Audio Channel: Mono
    Audio Encoder: PCM
And here's the commands that that page gives as an example to convert with ffmpeg:
    ffmpeg -i "input.wmv" -r 65535/2733 -vcodec mpeg4 -vtag XVID -q:v 8 -vf "scale=480:-1" -an -y "video_out.mp4"
    ffmpeg -i "input.wmv" -r 65535/2733 -vn -c:a libmp3lame -ar 22050 -ac 1 -ab 128k -y "audio_out.mp3"
    mp3gain -g 10 "audio_out.mp3"
    ffmpeg -i "video_out.mp4" -i "audio_out.mp3" -r 65535/2733 -vcodec copy -map 0:0 -c:a pcm_s16le -ar 22050 -ac 1 -map 1:0 -y video_ready_for_innotab.avi
Any help figuring this out would be very much appreciated.

Have you looked the MEncoder wiki page:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mencoder
    Another alternative is using HandBrake.

  • Used ITunes to Convert Video for IPod, But No Go!

I have a video from a vodcast I want to play on my video IPod. I used ITunes to convert the video from the .mov to .mv4 format. The video plays well in ITunes (in both formats). But when I try to sync it to my IPod, I get the warning that it cannot play on this IPod.
The thing is, I'm able to sync other .mv4 or .mp4 files on the IPod.
Anyone with information as to what's going on?

  • Need help with PC build for use with Photoshop CS4 Extended - Have I made the right choices?

    Hello,
I'm very new to the inner workings of a PC...this will be first time building one from scratch.  I know enough to be dangerous but not enough to be confident.  I will use the PC primarily for editing, secondarily for iTunes management.  I've heard that I should have, at the very least, an SSD for PS, other apps and the O/S.  I'll also have a hard drive for data storage.  Do I need yet another SSD for scratch?  If so, any recs for one?  Also, my current build (which does not include any SSDs) is about $800.  What can I skinny down, without sacrificing a huge amount of speed/performance?  I am looking for major guidance here...I'm ready to order, but I keep second-guessing my choices.  I want to make sure I get this right the first time around.  I want this machine to last me a good long while.  Any help at all will be HUGELY appreciated!

    Thanks!
    Andrea

Make sure the motherboard is the third revision as the earlier two had problems with the i5-2500K (Sandy Bridge)
I prefer Asus motherboards but doesn't mean the Gigabyte is a problem. (I note that it scored 4 eggs...)
May not make a difference in Photoshop but for Premiere the Geforce video cards with GDDR5 are preferred.
The LiteOn iHas 224 does lightscribe which is a nice touch for clients/gifts.
There is no room to save as I would consider your build minimum specs for a nice photoshop experience.
As for SSD drives...my research of reviews and articles makes me feel the technology is not ready for mission critical work. So if you are running a business then I recommend not using SSD drives. Rather look at Raptor 10,000 rpm drive for Windows and Photoshop and use the Spinpoint for storage. If not business then I've read the intel x25 SSD drives are solid but I have no personal experience with them.
    Cheers,

  • How do I use new Photos to autoscan for faces like iPhoto did?

iPhoto used to have a feature to auto scan for faces. On Photos, I seem to have to go through photos one by one, or identify "unidentified" faces 1 by 1, then it will auto detect just a few more, which is HUGELY inefficient with 1000s of photos.(a lot already have "known faces" attached to them) . Looking it up in Photos Help is no help!  It says:
Rescan a photo for a missing face
Select one or more photos with undetected faces.
Choose Photos > Detect Missing Faces. In the Source list, an icon next to Faces spins as iPhoto scans the photos again. During this scan, iPhoto uses less stringent criteria than in the original scan. As a result, you may see more “false positives”—photos in which an object has been identified as a possible face.
To see if iPhoto found additional faces, select one photo at a time and click the Info button in the toolbar.
    Question:
there is no Photos in source list only ALL PHOTOS (FACES,LAST IMPORT, ETC.), nor in dropdown, so what do I do? I never get to the the spinning icon....
Also how do I find "undetected Faces" do I really have to go photo by photo?  Help me!!!!

  • Syncing videos to iPhone from iPhoto

I have a iPhoto 09 and an iPhone 3GS. I currently use Events as the primary organizational tool for my photos. I have a few Events that also have videos (taken from point and shoot cameras) in the .mov format. I would like these videos to sync with my events onto my iPhone so when I show people my pictures, I can show the videos at the appropriate times (and not have to go over to the iPod function, etc).
I was wondering what the best method is to convert my video (which I would think is playable in the iPhone b/c its .mov) to a playable format for the iPhone, while keeping the meta data (creation date, etc, so that it says in the appropriate place in the Event).
Any suggestions? In particular I'm working on an event with Videos from a Canon Powershot, and I believe the videos are "HD"
    Thanks for the help.

The easiest way is to use iMovie. The videos you have in iPhoto should show up in the source list in iMovie. Create a new project in iMovie for each video you want. You can create a single project and add all the movies or create a different project for each movie. You don't have to edit the clips if you don't want to.
When you're ready, for each project in iMovie choose Share->iTunes... and make sure iPhone is one of the destinations. iMovie will compress the movies to make them compatible with the iPhone and they will be stored in iTunes. You can then sync your iPhone with iTunes.

  • IMovie '09 as archive for all my video assets?

    Hi,
I have been searching the posts but couldn't find an answer on my (a bit more general) question: I've started to use iMovie 09 as archive for all my DV and HDV clips as I like the functionality how to have access to all clips once imported (like iTunes). IMO this is better than the clips view pane in iMovie HD.
Now, I have been reading that iMovie 09 reduces video quality on import("skipping every other line" or so) as it's designed for lower quality internet publishing. My intention is not to publish on the internet, but more to have convenient access to all the video captured over the years. The idea is to eventually watch edited video on my HD TV using AppleTV.
However, if the video is reducded in quality it's not a tool to archive my clips. Should I be looking to a) go back to iMovie HD, b) use FCE instead, or c) look for something completely different?
Any thoughts from the experts is highly appreciated.
    thanks!

A couple of reasons. The main reason is that I wanted a way to archive the video since my cam is sd card based (no more tapes). The archive is also a much smaller file than the imported files. Since I use the video on ATV I import on Large and save to ATV format. In the future if the hardware allows an easier way to play the video at its full resolution (I film everything on the highest setting - 1920x1080) then I can go back to the archive and import at Full.
