Using Oracle on VMWare server

A vendor is telling me I can not put their Oracle database on a VMWare server because it is only licensed for one CPU. I tried to explain I could set the VMWare session to only use one CPU but they said Oracle will not allow that. They have already proven it runs fine on VMWare but refuse to budge saying it is a dumb Oracle licensing requirement.
Is this really true? Is it OK to use a product utilizing an Oracle database licensed for a single CPU to run on a VMWare server if I restrict the session to use only one CPU?

Is this really true? Is it OK to use a product utilizing an Oracle database licensed for a single CPU to run on a VMWare server if I restrict the session to use only one CPU?Aside from the support issue, I'm fascinated by the vendor dictating the oracle license requirements. I'm supposing here that this is some software vendor. Further, I'm supposing that since you refer to them as a "vendor" that you are the customer of said software. So, just who owns the Oracle license in question? If they are "vending" a software product that uses Oracle as the back-end database, and you (your company) have purchased said software product, I'd think that you would own the oracle license, and the vendor is in no position to tell you what you can and cannot do under the terms of that license.
But then I'm no attorney, and I don't know the full story here ...
I can tell you that I have had application vendors with no financial stake in any particular rdbms product tell me that Oracle will not perform with more than 5 concurrent connections. I've had vendors tell me that we had to host Oracle database on Windows because their application would only run on windows. In short, there are a lot of vendors out there hosting their apps on Oracle, but don't know **** about Oracle.
As for Oracle not being supported on VMware, if you read the MetaLink note stating their position (I don't have it handy) it really boils down to this: when resolving a problem on a VMware hosted database, Oracle will provide a solution appropriate to the guest OS. If that solution does not work, Oracle may require you to reproduce the problem on a non-VMware system. If the solution works on the non-VMware system, it is assumed the problem is due to VMware itself, and at that point Oracle support will cease. They will not provide support or patches for problems determined to be the result of VMware. I know plenty of shops that are running Oracle on VMware quite successfully.

  • Using Oracle's Parallel Server for synchronizing databases with different tables

    Hello,
    I have a problem and I was searching through the Oracle documentation.
    Then I mentioned the Oracle's Parallel Server (OPS) feature.
    The problem I want to fix is the following:
    I want to make a copy of a database. Subsequently I want to make changes to the copy of the original database. (possible changes could be extra columns).
    Now I want to synchronize the data of both databases...
    Is it possible to use Oracle's Parallel Server feature for this task?

    Found that lots of defunct processes(PPID of webservd) are created and these defuncts (zombies) leads to stop the services.
    I am not good in iPlanet webserver configuration settings on the Solaris 10 OS.
    Could anyone help me to fix this issue ?

  • Caching on ejb container using Oracle 9i Application server

    Hi,
    can we cache on the ejb container in Oracle application server ?
    if so, whats the methodology ?
    Regards,
    Murali

    Can you explain exactly what you want to cache? The complete container: no makes no sences. Objects in the container, makes sences but in case of CMP the entites are already cached.
    Can you provide more information what you want to achieve?

  • Use Oracle of EP Server

    Hi,
    Using Visual Admin I have been able to connect to the Oracle database on which SAP - EP is installed, to be utilized for my custom build webdynpro application that will be used via iViews of EP for our EP users.
    My concern is, can we use the database on which NetWeaver components are installed by creating another database schema(user account)? What is SAP standard?
    If we shouldn't, then do I have to install Oracle on other machine and use it? What are the alternatives?
    Regards,

  • How to configure oracle 6i report server run time component with application server

    we got oracle 6i report server for developing the web based reports for our undergoing product. we r succesed in developing the web based reports using oracle 6i report server.But we r facing problems while deploying the product with oracle reports at clients place,why because the client does not have the oracle 6i report server. To solve this problem we have to configure the oracle 6i report server run time component with application server at client side , but we are unable to configure this component(that is CGI handler).

    You can run multiple instances of Reports Server in 6i.
    In tnsnames.ora, for each server, have a different name and each listening to different port.
    For example,
    server1.world = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(Host = myhost.mydomain.com)(Port = 1949))
    server2.world = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(Host = myhost.mydomain.com)(Port = 1950))
    Also, if you want to know about Reports Server Clustering, you may refer to "Publishing Reports" document on OTN:

    i had taken Application Development Support Then at run time it is showing following error message
    com.crystaldecisions.sdk.occa.report.lib.ReportSDKException---- Error code:-2147467259 Error code name:failed
    How to Solve these critical  problem
    Thanks ,

    Hi Rahul,
    Server logs may contain JDK warnings such as the following if the jdk folder is an mklink.
    *[WARN ][osal ] Could not add counter (null)\ for query*
    *[WARN ][osal ] Failed to init virtual size counter.*
    These are just warnings and do not affect any servers.
    Workaround
    To suppress these warnings, add the following line in the FRAMEWORK_LOCATION\provisioning\provisioning-plan\fusionapps_start_params.properties file
    -Xverbose:osal=error
    You can even try the solution provided in below link

  • Running VMware Server 2 services as a non-root user

    Hello,
    I have switched from VirtualBox to VMware Server 2 on my Arch64 server and the transition has been relatively painless. I am at the point now where I want to run VMware's services as a non-root user account (I have a service account called "svc-vmadmin" that I'd like to use). I'm generally not comfortable running services as root, but at the same time I'm conscious of the time and effort required vs. overall benefits.
    I've done the usual Google searches and even checked the VMware Server 2 user guide and the VMware community, but I can't find specific details on how to achieve this.
    Is this even plausible in a Linux environment? I used to run VMware Server 1 under the SYSTEM account on Windows Server, so I'm hopinga similar thing can be done on Arch.
    I would greatly appreciate any information or personal experience that fellow Archers can share.
    Thanks,
    Thom

    System services are handled by launchd.
    If you look in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ you'll see a plist file for each service including org.isc.named.plist, the plist for named.
    If you edit this file you'll see it's an XML document that describes the service and how the OS should handle it, including the part:
    <key>ProgramArguments</key>
    <array>
    <string>/usr/sbin/named</string>
    <string>-f</string>
    </array>
    Just append another entry in the array that says <string>-u nobody</string> (or whatever username you want to run as.

  • Oracle Database Mobile Server 11 sync

    Hi,
    I have two simple tables in the back-end oracle database in order to create a meeting-room android application with and embebbed SQLite database on the client devices. I have written all the functionality to register, authenticate, create a new appointent, show it, and delete it and it works fine on my smartphone, but I did all these steps against the local sqlite db.
    Now I would like to share the reserves info with all the clients by synchronization using Oracle Database Mobile Server 11.
    Tables:
    Employees(ID, username, password, firstname, lastname, phone, email)
    Reserves(ID, subject, firstname, lastname, start_date, end_date, meeting_room, alarm)
    I have configured all the publications required (app , item, users, grants...) with the Workbench tool, like i have read from the official documentation and i added the lines to invoke the sync functionality. My problem is that when i launch the first sync the sqlite database in created on the device but the few records on the back-end are not replicated in the sqlite db. ¿is this process automatic or have I to write some code to catch this info?
    Another problem is that the records of the sqlite database is neither replicated to the back-end database. I have to say that th sync process ends succesfully but I can see nothing on the in-queue and out-queue queues in the mobile manager console. So, what´s about this incomind and outcoming data? Th only thing i can see is a set of dirty records, these records are records on the back-end db, but I dont know what means...
    Could you help me please?
    Thank you very much.

    Hi
    Data Subsetting is to restrict the data each Client sees based on values you specify i.e.
    If you only wanted a Client to see data for a specific Dept you could specify the following in the Publication Item
    Select * from emp where DEPTNO = :DEPTNO
    You can define what DEPTNO should be for each Client in the Mobile Server
    So in your case if you want ALL Client to see ALL records for a Publication Item then you should not specify any Data Subsetting i.e.
    Select * from emp - This would retrieve all rows
    There is no specific need to use Sequences in your Application unless you want to. Obviously you must make sure that any new records created on the Client will not conflict with a record created on a different Client otherwise conflicts will occur after the data is synchronized with the server
    With regards to you actual issue can you confirm the following ( NO NOT CHANGE ANY VALUES )
    1. Check the table mobileadmin.applications in the Repository DB and confirm there is a row there for your Application and that the 'Publication' column contains the correct Publication you created in MDW.
    2. Check the Table C$ALL_CLIENT_ITEMS, this should contain one row for each Publication Item you created in MDW i.e.
    Select PUBLICATION_ITEM, DIRTY, CRR From C$ALL_CLIENT_ITEMS Where CLIENTID = '<Your Client Name>';
    regards

    2 Are you able to access the icon if u directly enter the icon value ?
    http://www.Alexyscorp.com/myicon.gif
    if its not port 80 enter the port
    3 In the httpd.conf file whats the root directory ? Try putting the icon there

    Step 1 - from a command line on the database machine, enter 'lsnrctl status' and report the output
    Step 2 - display the contents of the %ORACLE_HOME%\network\admin\tnsnames.ora file on the machine running sqlplus.
    These are the first two stepo, whether on the database machine or in a traditional client-server configuration.

  • Is it a good idea to use oracle database to process the geometry data?

    I am working on a map related project. Here are the stops I need to do.
    1. load geometry information from a table with spatial filter and other conditions (where clause)
    2. get the points from the geometry column (sdo_geometry)
    3. transform the coordinates
    4. encoding the coordinates
    5. output
    We have a third party applicaiton that can do both #2 and #3. However the process is slow. Some quick tests show that all the steps from #1 to #4 can be done within oracle and the speed is faster. My concern is if it is a good approach to use oracle, a database server, to do all the data processing that can be done and normally shoudl be done on a web server.
    Any adivce please?
    (BTW, we use oracle 10g on windows 2008R2 64bit, and we may upgrate to 11g in about a year.)

    Hi Simon,
    Thanks for your help.
    Yes all the steps can be done within the database side (Oracle). However I could do the same (extracting the coordinates from the sdo_geometry column, transforming the coordinates and encoding the coordinates) in .net code (web server side) by making use of the new verison of the odp.net. So I have to make a decision now to choose which approach to go, relying on Oracle server to do all the data processing or .net code. I am pretty sure Oracle can process a single request fairly quick, but if tens or even more concurrent requests for the process, I have concerns over the performance or reliability of the database server, especially the server is (a kind of ) beyond of our control (in control of the midware, IS and network team). Somebody said database is just a database and for data storing and retrieving, but may not for processing the data.
    Here is more information regarding what we are doing. We use Google Map API to disply parcels. Each time the map is loaded, panned, zoomed, or refreshed (and so on), we need to query the database with spatial filter and some other criteria. The result will be tens or up to handreds of parcels containing hundreds to thousands of coordinates that are extracted from the parcel table that has a sdo_geometry column. We are expecting tens to hundreds of these requests every minute.
    Now I am trying to chain every step together and do some tests using both appoachs in order to see which way is more effient and promising. I am guessing there won't be too much difference in terms of the performance for some simple testing unless I run some load testing, or if somebody like you guys can help me out.
    1. load geometry information from a table with spatial filter and other conditions (where clause)
    Regarding the issues you asked:
    ====================================
    I assume you mean something like: Yes
    CREATE TABLE load_table AS SELECT ID, GEOM FROM base_table where SDO_INSIDE(....) = 'TRUE';
    2. get the points from the geometry column (sdo_geometry)
    I assume you mean something like: Yes
    SELECT ID, v.x, v.y FROM load_table l, TABLE(sdo_util.getVertices(l.geom)) t;
    (See last comment about data.)
    The problem is that we need a lot more information on what it is that you want to do in steps 3 - 5.
    3. Transform the coordinates.
    What sort of transformation? Rotation, Shift, Scale, Coordinate rounding? Transform from UTM to LatLng
    4. Encoding the coordinates
    What do you mean by this? Write them out as WKT/KML/GML? Google map encoded polylines
    5. Output
    Again, output to what, where? A new table? A shapefile? A text file? JSONP formatted data
    Also, if you can provide a single sdo_geometry object + data and some example SQL it would help as well.
    Here is an example where I take a geometry, rotate it (cf 3. Transform), extract vertices (2. get points), encode it (4. Encoding), and then output to screen (5. Output).
    WITH myGeom As (
    SELECT 1 as id,
    MDSYS.SDO_GEOMETRY(2006, NULL, NULL, MDSYS.SDO_ELEM_INFO_ARRAY(1,2,1,5,2,1), MDSYS.SDO_ORDINATE_ARRAY(355600.52, 5407396.19, 361365.32, 5408106.36, 356488.27, 5409242.37, 357437.46, 5406457.67)) as geom
    FROM DUAL
    SELECT g.id || ',' || t.x || ',' || t.y as csv
    FROM myGeom g,
    TABLE (sdo_util.getVertices(
    GEOM.Rotate(p_geometry => g.geom,
    p_tolerance => 0.005,
    p_rotatePt => MDSYS.SDO_Point_Type(357437.46,5406457.67,NULL),
    p_rotation => 45 ))) t;
    -- Results
    CSV
    1,355474.91,5405822.39
    1,359049.08,5410400.89
    1,354797.2,5407755.57
    1,357437.46,5406457.67
    Now show us what it is you want to do!!

  • Oracle 11g b2b server JMS Internal Delivery Channel Configuration

    Hi,
    I am using Oracle 11g b2b server configured with ebMS protocol. I have created a JMS internal delivery channel at host trading partner. Now the Inbound message (message from remote trading partner) will be delivered to back-end application through the jms internal delivery channel. Now I wanted to send this message to the another weblogic server domain which is hosted on another box. So where do I give the other weblogic domain details such that the message will be delivered from the host trading partner's b2b server to remote weblogic domain queue?
    Regards,
    Baskaran

    Hi Baskaran,
    As already mentioned by Nitesh, You can Create a Internal JMS Delivery channel and configure the same in your agreement to route the messages to the remote weblogic(domain) JMS queue.
    Remote weblogic domain's ip address and port details can be configured as part of JMS Internal Delivery channel, "Destination Provider" like below,
    eg.
    java.naming.provider.url=t3://<host>:<port>;java.naming.factory.initial=weblogic.jndi.WLInitialContextFactory;java.naming.security.principal=<username>;java.naming.security.credentials=<password>
    In this case the messages directly delivery to the remote JMS queue.
