Using Screensavers in Home directory

When I open System Preferences and select ScreenSavers I can't seem to find any of the screen saver files stored in my ~/Library/Screensavers. How do I fix this - there are some neat ones like the roller-coaster or the water falls. Thanks.

QuickLook only works with .qtz files, not with .saver files. The UselessCreations saver seems to work fine: I downloaded it, mounted the .dmg file, drug the 3D Desktop Aquarium.saver file into
/Library/Screen Savers
Opened the System Prefs pane and it was listed in Others, tried it out, it worked. The Goldfish one is Windows only. Won't work on a Mac. Take a look at the savers featured here:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/icons_screensavers/
Also look here:
http://phillryu.com/2006/07/30/the-top-ten-os-x-screensavers/
That link has a snow flakes saver with large flakes falling straight down against a blue gradient background. Downloaded that one, unzipped and put it here:
"/Library/Screen Savers/LotsaSnow.saver"
Works fine.

  • Home Directory Probs

    OK, here is the scenario.
I have an OD Master running 10.4.7 server.
I have a home directory share point running on a 10.3.9 server.
I have a client running 10.4.7. Network Accounts are showing as available. I go to login with the home directory running on 10.3.9 and it comes up with the home directory cannot be mounted at this time.
I have tried logging in an account that has a home directory on a 10.4.7 machine and that is coming up with no problems.
I have gone through WGM and checked the network mount and that is coming up kosher. I even went through the Finder and found the server in the list.
SO, I am assuming that it is a problem on the 10.3.9 server, but I am at a loss to figure out what it is. The home directory permissions have been checked and rechecked and those look good as well.

    Figured it out.
First, the 10.3.9 is not a replica, just a share point for home directories.
Second, this is an old Mac Manager server. There are home directories setup on this server, but I wanted to start fresh with new home directories, so I setup a new share point and used cp to move the documents over and then WGM to fix the permissions. What was happening, best I can figure is that the old MM home directories were trying to be mounted even though they are no longer a share point. I even turned off MM and removed the Directory Access LDAP settings. As soon as I deleted an old MM home directory, the machine logged in just fine.
Interested how that even though MM is not in use that the home directory information is still retained.

  • How do I move my home directory to another disk?

I want to find out the "standard procedure" for moving my home directory to another disk.  My current system disk is getting quite full, so I have purchased additional storage.  The issues I am concerned about are the following:
    Preserving the file permissions
I have used rsync and ditto commands to copy the file.  Does rsync preserve the permissions like the ditto command?
Updating the System to use the new home directory
I have used the Ctl-Click on the accounts control panel to update the location of the home directories.  Do applications use "~<username>" or /Users/<username> to find the home directory of the user (obviously this is limited to Apple Controlled software).
Understanding the /Users and /home directories
Since Apple is no longer using netinfo, I wanted to get a better understanding how these directories are set up.  Is the /home directory exclusively for network mounted home directories.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

I disagree with Linc Davis on whether to move the home folder, But I think you are going about it the wrong way.
Having a Boot drive with only System, Library, Applications, and the hidden unix directories including Paging/Swap on it is one of the best ways to speed up routine disk Access for all your other files. The system keeps "snacking" away loading and reloading bits and pieces of System and Applications as you work, and that System activity slows "regular" disk access way down by moving the drive heads away from the files you are processing.
Giving System files their own drive speeds up everything.
Here are two good recipes and discussions about how and why to do this, and how to make it happen without a single line of Terminal code:

  • User cron jobs won't run without home directory

I have a situation where the users are defined through ldap without home directories, but our application creates cron jobs for these users. If a home directory is defined, the cron jobs run. If no home directory is defined, the cron jobs will not run. Is there a way to configure cron to use a global home directory, instead of the user's home directory?
    Kevin

The crontab man page says that cron changes to the users home
directory and then sets up some simple environment and run sh.
    it also talks about /etc/cron.d/cron.allow
So it looks like those users need to be given a home directory
like /tmp , but you need to think about the implication, are the accounts locked to stop logins
    truss -fpl $(pgrep cron)
might show you what it is doing.
it also talks about /etc/cron.d/cron.allow do you have such a file?

  • LDAP with local home directory?

    Greetings.
I'm trying to configure the Macs to authenticate based off of the LDAP server. I'm pretty sure I've got that part working, but I'm running into difficulty figuring out how to specify using a local home directory template rather than an NFS / AFP portable home directory. All the guides on the internet out there seem to want to use NFS, which we don't have setup (and don't intend to).
Based on instructions of various texts, manuals, and blogs, I've created a user account called "labuser", and a group called "users", and then given any member of the group "users" write-access to the folder /Users/labuser. This way they login to a default home directory (at least for now). What information do i specify for LDAP's "apple-user-homeDirectory" entry to make it look for this /Users/labuser folder rather than an NFS share?

So basically I should add C:\Documents and Settings instead of /Users for windows accounts?
Because if I don't specify anything it creates a roaming profile on the windows machine, and puts the user directory both on the windows machine and a copy on the server under /Users/Profiles. Or at least is what is doing now... so I manually have to change the profile to local on the windows machine and delete the folder on the server...

  • On 10.4.11 Mac Mail I get this: Mail cannot update your mailboxes because your home directory is full. You must free up space in your home folder before using Mail. Delete unnedded documents or move documents to another volume. I can't open mail.

On 10.4.11 iMac Mac Mail I get this message: "Mail cannot update your mailboxes because your home directory is full. You must free up space in your home folder before using Mail. Delete unneeded documents or move documents to another volume." I can't open mail to do this. I have reinstalled software but no effect. How do I get into Mail to delete?

Found this on the "more like this" Worked like a charm!
With the Mail.app quit and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. Copy the Mail folder and place the copy on the Desktop for backup purposes.
Go to Home > Library > Mail > Envelope Index. Move the Envelope Index file to the Desktop.
Launch Mail and you will be prompted to import mailboxes. Select OK and allow the import process to complete.
After confirming all mailboxes were successfully imported and available, you can delete the copy of the Mail folder and old Envelope Index file from the Desktop and this should resolve the problem.

  • How can I use the /home directory

I'm doing development work on my Mac (running Snow Leopard). The output location for the production server I use is under "/home/subdir". I'd like to develop my files on the Mac so they reside in the same relative location, but from the default install this is not possible.
The /home directory is hidden by default. If I view hidden files, it looks like a mounted hard drive, but with no space. If I try to do something in the /home directory, I get "Operation not supported". For example, from the command line "sudo mkdir /home/test" returns "mkdir: /home/test: Operation not supported".
(Originally, when I was useing Leopard, I moved the installed /home to /home_old and created my own /home directory, but the install to Snow Leopard reverted it back to the locked out /home dir. The other one was preserved, but it makes me nervous enough that I don't want to try it again without some reassurance.)
So, the question: Is there a safe way to use /home on a Mac running Snow Leopard?

Found the answer in another forum post here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2073807&tstart=0
To get the /home directory back. Edit /etc/auto_master and remove or comment out the line that starts with "/home". Then reboot.

  • How to use smb share for home directory with AD account

I have extended the schema of our AD and bound a macbook pro running 10.6.8 to the domain. AD users are able to logon, and if I select the option to use their AD homedirectory attribute then this smb share is used as a network drive. My question is though, I need users to logon to MAC using a different smb share for their home drive than the path set in the home directory attribute. Does anyone know how I can achieve this?
    Cheers
    Paul.

But this method cannot use Regular Expression because my searching target is more than one line.Yes it can!
Like you said, first you list all the files in the folder.
For each file, use a BufferedReader to read the first lines, then you may use a StringBuffer to append the lines into it (don't forget to append the '\n' to each line).
Finally, compile your pattern ( "^November.*\nDecember" ) with the DOTALL flag,
verify that the string (from StringBuffer) matches the pattern and there you have it!

  • Why can't a new folder be created within my user home directory when using 'Save As' in Mountain Lion?

    Hi,
So I want to create a new folder within my main user home directory (not the root directory) just for my developer-related files? I can do this from Finder, although it does prompt me for my password to do so. However, when using 'Save As' from any app, the 'New Folder' button is greyed out when I select my user home directory. So I have to create the folder in Finder then Save As.
Is this normal behavior? Is OSX discouraging me from adding things to my user home directory by making it less convenient? Is there a good reason it would be discouraging me from creating new folders there? If not, is there a setting that I can change to allow the creation of new folders from the Save As prompt?
    Thanks for your help,
    B

You may need to rebuild permissions on your user account. To do this, boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type:  ‘resetpassword’ (without the ’s), hit return, and select the admin user. You are not going to reset your password. Click on the icon for your Macs hard drive at the top. From the drop down below it select the user account which is having issues. At the bottom of the window, you'll see an area labeled Restore Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the reset button there. The process takes a few minutes. When complete, restart.

  • "Home directory is already in use"

Recently, we have been getting an error on several student laptops during login, that the "home directory is already in use". We have only been able to resolve the issue by deleting and remaking the account and home directory on the server. We have determined that the user has not been logging into their account from multiple machines.
Any thoughts on where this problem is coming from or how to resolve it?

Delete the .mcxlc file at the root of the user's network home.
Be sure to let Apple know that your are having trouble. Assuming the user is using portable home directories and letting his syncs finish, he should not be getting this message.
Also note there is checkbox in Workgroup Manager / Accounts / Advanced called "Allow simultaneous login on managed computers", but it only works for login with a AFP/SMB home. You may want to check or uncheck this depending on your needs.

  • Acrobat Pro 9.0 and 9.1 crash using Portable Home Directory

Installed 9.0 as part of CS4 Design Suite, and updated to 9.1. Runs OK for user on local machine but crashes when used by a portable home directory user on same machine, accessing user on OSX Server on local network. Safari also crashes when accessing pdf document. Can anyone help please?

Thanks, the workaround in message 34 worked for me (so far!). Much more helpful than this reply from Adobe: "I am afraid we are unable to troubleshoot errors with customized user accounts. If the program works locally, we advice to use the program locally."
    Thanks again.

  • Reading from home directory in linux using ~/ or $HOME and BufferedReader

I'm working on an app that reads in a number from a user's home directory using BufferedReader. The file is written by an external script to ~/filename. I don't know if the user of the app's home directory will be /homes/username, /home/username, or something else. I would prefer to read in a similar fashion:
    BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader( new FileReader("~" + File.separator + ".AppDisableUntilDate") );
Unfortunately, this causes the following error:
java.io.FileNotFoundException: ~/.AppDisableUntilDate (No such file or directory)
less ~/.AppDisableUntilDate does read the file. Using $HOME in place of ~/ also fails. Any ideas what might work?
    Thanks,
    Joel

~ is understood only by the shell. And not by every shell either.
Korn and Bourne-again shell (ksh and bash) understand it, I would conjecture, Bourne shell (good old sh) does not.

  • User Home Directory settings in dock using WGM

    Hello all:
There has to be a simple answer to this problem as I have successfully done this in the past on a Panther server.
I just upgraded to Tiger server and want to include the user's Documents, Home Directory, etc in their Dock. However, I can't seem to find the correct procedure.
I used to complete this by logging into a client machine with WGM (as administrator), run the application, go to the user, select the preferences to include the user's Documents folder, Network Home, etc in the Dock for always, and that was it.
However, this procedure no longer seems to work.
    What am I doing wrong??
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Brian

Yeah, in my initial post I said that the user share shows up on the desktop, if those options are selected.
The problem is that if those Finder options aren't selected the users don't have quick access to their user directory. They literally don't know it's there. Worse since 'All My Files' are the default in 10.8 they don't even get it in new finder windows.
The most peculiar issues is that the first time a user logs onto the computer with their domain credentials IT DOES WORK; their user directory shows up in the dock, and it does NOT show up on the desktop. On subsequent logins this is reversed.
I'd simply like it to work the way it's supposed to...

  • Use another partition for Home directory?

I upgraded my Power Mac G5 to Leopard and it recognized that I use a separate partition for my home directory. My MacBook didn't have enough space on my system partition to upgrade, so I did a clean install. Now I'm stuck using a home directory on the system partition- NetInfo manager does not exist in Leopard to allow this change and I want to use another partition for my home directory. How do I change this?

Use the 'ln -s' command in the Terminal, which is in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder, to create a symbolic link to the desired location of your home folder, and put it where your current home folder is. The l in the command is a lowercase L; to see instructions for it, run 'man ls'.
