Using singleton to store rows of data
Hello,
I'm working on a web project involving struts.
I have a jsp page, action class, action form, and a session ejb.
I'm getting rows from database.
What I would like to do is to use SIngleton approach to store rows of data for users.
Does anyone know how to implement that approach?
Thank you.

This would be a very very very bad design since the singleton would be shared between ALL users of the JSP and they would therefore interfere with each other.

Alternatives to using update to flag rows of data
Hello
I'm looking into finding ways of improving the speed of a process, primarily by avoiding the use of an update statement to flag a row in a table.
The problem with flagging the row is that the table has millions of rows in it.
The logic is a bit like this,
Set flag_field to 'F' for all rows in table. (e.g 104million rows updated)
for a set of rules loop around this
Get all rows that satisfy criteria for a processing rule. (200000 rows found)
Process the rows collected data (200000 rows processed)
Set flag_field to 'T' for those rows processed (200000 rows updated)
end loop
Once a row in the table has been processed it shouldn't be collected as part of any criteria of another rule further down the list, hence it needs to be flagged so that it doesn't get picked up again.
With there being millions of rows in the table and sometimes rules only processing 200k rows, i've learnt recently that this will create a lot of undo to be written and will thus take a long amount of time. (any thoughts on that)
Can anyone suggest anything other then using an update statement to flag each row to avoid it being processed again?
Appreciate the helpWith regard to speeding up the process, the answer is
"it depends". It all hinges on exactly what you mean
by "Process the rows collected data". What does the
processing involve?the processing involved is very straight forwards.
data in these large tables stay unchanged. for sake of this example, i'll call this table orig_data_table, the rules are set by users who have their own tables built (for this example we'll call it target_data_table).
the rules are there to take rows from the orig_data_table and insert them into the target_data_table.
e.g
update orig_data_table set processed='F';rule #1 states : select * from orig_data_table where feature_1 = 310;this applies to 3000 rows in orig_data_table.
these 3000 rows get inserted to target_data_table.
final step is to flag these 3000 rows in the orig_data_table so that they are not used by another rule proceeding rule 1 : update orig_data_table.processed='T' where feature_1 = 310;
commit;rule #2 states :select * from orig_data_table where feature_1=310 and destination='Asia' and orig_data_table.processed = 'F'so it won't pick the 3000 rows that were processed as part of rule #1
once rule #2 has got the rows from orig_data_table (e.g 400000 rows)
those get inserted to the target_data_table, followed by them being flagged to avoid being retrieved again
update orig_data_table.processed='T' where destination='Asia';
commit;continue onto rule #3...
- Is the process some kind of transformation of the
~200,000 selected rows which could possibly be
achieved in SQL alone, or is it an extremely complex
transformation which can not be done in pure SQL?its not at all complex, as i say the data in orig_data_table is unchanged bar the processed field which is initially set to 'F' for all rows and then set to 'T' after each rule for those rows fulfilling the criteria of each rule.
- Does the FLAG_FIELD exist purely for the use of
this process or is it referred to by other
procedures?the flag_field is only for this purpose and not used elsewhere
Having said that, as a first step to simply avoid the
update of the flag field, I would suggest that you
use bulk processing and include a table of booleans
to act as the indicator for whether a particular row
has been processed or not.could you elaborate a bit more on this table of booleans for me, it sounds an interesting approach for me to test...
many thanks again

Problem using string to store evt.target.data and apply property filters
I have about 9 buttons on my stage and I want to write code for the rollover and rollout effects, I only want to write the code once so I am trying to pass the button info into a string via evt.target.data and it pass the info properly into my string variable but when I try to set my filter to that variable, setting my movieclip instance name to that variable, I get 2 errors:
1119: Access of possibly undefined property filters through a reference with static type String.
Warning: 1072: Migration issue: String is not a dynamic class. Instances cannot have members added to them dynamically.
My code is:

function thumbRollEffect(evt:MouseEvent):void {
whichThumb = evt.target.name;
whichThumb.filters=[ds];
Thank you for your help!kglad, thanks for helping.
basically, i am a newbie and i'm not clear on your answer . if evt.currentTarget is better, I would like to use the best method, so thanks. i'm trying to get my head around what's going on here in the code. i get that actionscript is storing a "reference" to the object but I don't get why I can't put that reference (which is the name of the movieclip on the stage I wish to apply filters to, i.e. mc0) into a string variable (whichThumb) and then use that string variable to apply the filter (whichThumb.filters=[ds];)
on one hand, i'm getting error that says "possibly undefined property filters thru a ref with string" which I don't get because the filters are defined outside of the function and are called intially in the load function with no problem. and on the other hand, i am getting another error saying there is a "migraiton issue" with my string not being a dynamic class. do i need to make the var whichThumb another type other than string? if so, what type. maybe that will also solve the "undefined property" issue as well.
still learning, Thanks for help! -
How to store array of data into a single row of table ,using any of Stmts
HI Friends,
Based on my requirements ,i have retrived a set of data from a XXX.jsp page using a request.getParameter() and stored into single dimenssional array . Now i am paassing that array to JAVA class to store a into some table .
In JSP page users can add text boxes dynamically based on his intrest then those attributes will store in table .it means table attributes are not conatant , it table attributes may change at any time when user adds any textboxs or any fields on JSP page ....thats my module ..
Now i wanted to store all array of data into Table in a single row .......thats is my requirements .
How can we use prepareStatement and Statement to store array of results intoo table row ...on each iteration i wanted to store array of results into table atributes ..It means entire array of results should to into table row at time .....coule any one write sytax ,how we do this...
could any one suggest me stps that i can impliment ......?....please reply ASAPWell ..you code can be works for constant number of attributes in table .oopss here my requirement is table attributes not fixed ,we cant put constant number of place holder(? ) in a statement ,because those are not fixed ,
Let me explain here :
i am doing in that way only. As i mentioned you Table attributes are not constant .It may very if users add any fields dynamically on JSP page .If users have option to add any text box on Jsp page ,then that attribute will store in table as a attribute .
Now i amable fetching the all dyamic form data and stored in a Result Array below ...in this iteration all form result data are from jsp page as suggestion form ,it should stored in table in single row on corrsponding attribtes ......next time when users fills FROM ,then those data i am fetching and storing in a Result Array as below and need to store in corrsponding table attributes in a single row ....
for(int i=0;i<result.length;i++)
System.out.println(result);
pst3=connection.prepareStatement("insert into *emprecord* values(?)");
if(!result[i].equals(""))
System.out.println(result[i]);
pst3.setString(1,result[i]);
pst3.executeUpdate();
Thnks in advance ....let me know the the way we can store dynamic form data into dyanamic table ... -
JTable - trying to delete a row of data using an Abstract TableModel
Hi Guys,
I am trying to delete a row of data on a JTable. What I am trying to accomplish is to highlight the row by a mouseclick,
then from the menu bar I am having the user select a "delete row" option. I am working with an abstract
Table Model with a deleteRow method. I know I am doing something wrong in this method but I'm not sure what... it is not deleting nor dynamically reflecting the deleted row of data on the JTable gui:
P.S. I am using a Vector of Vectors to store the data
Here are snippets of my main class and Abstract Table Model :
Main Class
Table definition and mouse listener:
usermodel = new DataFileTableModel("UserCtl.dat") ;
userTable = new JTable();
userTable.setModel(usermodel);
userTable.createDefaultColumnsFromModel();
userTable.addMouseListener(new MouseAdapter() {
public void mouseClicked(MouseEvent evt) {
upoint = evt.getPoint();
rowToBeDeleted = userTable.rowAtPoint(upoint);
Menu Selection which calls the deleteRow Method in the model:
deleteitem = new JMenuItem("Delete Row",'D');
editmenu.add(deleteitem) ;
deleteitem.addActionListener(new ActionListener() {
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
int delresp = JOptionPane.showConfirmDialog(null,"Are you sure you wish to delete this row ?",null, JOptionPane.YES_NO_OPTION) ;
switch(delresp) {
case JOptionPane.NO_OPTION:
return;
case JOptionPane.YES_OPTION:
switch (tabnum)
case 0:
usermodel.deleteRow(rowToBeDeleted);
break ;
Here is my Abstract Table Model... the deleteRow method is at the bottom:
import javax.swing.*;
import javax.swing.table.*;
import javax.swing.event.*;
import java.io.*;
import java.util.*;
public class DataFileTableModel extends AbstractTableModel {
protected Vector data;
protected Vector columnNames ;
protected String datafile;
public DataFileTableModel(String f){
datafile = f;
initVectors();
public void initVectors() {
String aLine ;
data = new Vector();
columnNames = new Vector();
try {
FileInputStream fin = new FileInputStream(datafile);
BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(fin));
// extract column names
StringTokenizer st1 =
new StringTokenizer(br.readLine(), "|");
while(st1.hasMoreTokens())
columnNames.addElement(st1.nextToken());
// extract data
while ((aLine = br.readLine()) != null) {
StringTokenizer st2 =
new StringTokenizer(aLine, "|");
while(st2.hasMoreTokens())
data.addElement(st2.nextToken());
br.close();
catch (Exception e) {
e.printStackTrace();
public int getRowCount() {
return data.size() / getColumnCount();
public int getColumnCount(){
return columnNames.size();
public String getColumnName(int columnIndex) {
String colName = "";
if (columnIndex <= getColumnCount())
colName = (String)columnNames.elementAt(columnIndex);
return colName;
public Class getColumnClass(int columnIndex){
return String.class;
public boolean isCellEditable(int rowIndex, int columnIndex) {
return true;
public Object getValueAt(int rowIndex, int columnIndex) {
return (String)data.elementAt( (rowIndex * getColumnCount()) + columnIndex);
public void setValueAt(Object aValue, int rowIndex, int columnIndex) {
data.setElementAt(aValue, (rowIndex * getColumnCount())+columnIndex) ;
fireTableCellUpdated(rowIndex, columnIndex);
public void addRow(Object[] aRow) {
for (int i=0; i < aRow.length; i++)
data.add(aRow);
int size = getRowCount();
fireTableRowsInserted(size-1,size-1);
public void deleteRow(int rowNo)
if (rowNo < 0 || rowNo >= getRowCount())
return;
int colCount = getColumnCount();
int index = colCount * rowNo;
System.out.println("in deleteRow Row = " + rowNo);
System.out.println("colCount = " + colCount);
System.out.println("index = " + index) ;
for (int d = index; d <= colCount; d++)
data.remove(d) ;
fireTableRowsDeleted(rowNo,rowNo) ;Hi,
I can see one obvious problem. Your method to delete contains
for (int d = index; d <= colCount; d++)
data.remove(d) ;
which I think should be
for (int d = index; d <= colCount; d++)
data.remove(index) ;
because every time you remove the value at 'index' it replaces it with the value at 'index+1'.
I'm not sure that this is the only problem but ...

Currently, the above codes issue is that although many rows of data have been inputted in all the tables, with regards to the select criteria above (in italics), it only produces one row of data when i expect more than one to appear.
If the query only outputs one row but you're expecting it to produce more than one row, then you need to dissect the statement to find out where the output is being unduly restricted
I was told maybe an outerloop or an inner loop would do the trick, but really stuck on how and where to put it.
Hope this makes sense guys and I would really appreciate your time.
Thanksif i run this particular code
( SELECT
AccountDetails.CUSTOMERNUMBER, AccountDetails.ACCOUNTNUMBER, CUSTOMERDETAILS.CDTITLE, CUSTOMERDETAILS.CDFIRSTNAME, CUSTOMERDETAILS.CDLASTNAME, AccountDetails.ACCOUNTTYPE,
AccountDetails.ORIGINALCONTRACTENDDATE, AccountDetails.CONTRACTTERM, AccountDetails.CONTRACTENDDATE, AccountDetails.BRANCHAREA, AccountDetails.PRODUCTTYPE,

FROM AccountDetails
JOIN CUSTOMERDETAILS ON AccountDetails.CUSTOMERNUMBER = CUSTOMERDETAILS.CUSTOMERS1
WHERE EXISTS
( SELECT *

JOIN DebtEpisodes ON DebtEpisodes.ACCOUNTID = Dcaaccountallocation.ACCOUNTID
WHERE Dcaaccountallocation.dcaid = 41
AND Dcaaccountallocation.status = 2
AND DebtEpisodes.DCASentDate IS NULL
AND Dcaaccountallocation.ACCOUNTID = AccountDetails.ACCOUNTNUMBER
AND DebtEpisodes.DCAORLAWYER = 'DCA'
This returns 1 row of data
However if i run a small part of the above code...
SELECT *
FROM Dcaaccountallocation
JOIN DebtEpisodes ON DebtEpisodes.ACCOUNTID = Dcaaccountallocation.ACCOUNTID
WHERE Dcaaccountallocation.dcaid = 41
AND Dcaaccountallocation.status = 2
It returns a lot of rows with a status of 2
Now i presume what I am going to do is to ensure that all the fields provide satisfactory requirements, with regards to the above code. Although I have many records in all the stated tables already.

Re: [SunONE-JATO] Re: Using an object to store and display data
Personally, I think there is little or no value to creating a "domain"
object that itself relies on a JATO QueryModel internally, but hides that
fact and requires use of BeanAdapterModel.
It would be more appropriate (and much less work, and more scalable) to just
derive a QueryModel subclass and add the domain-specific behavior to the
model. In other words, what's the point of creating an object that hides
JATO inside it when you're running in JATO to begin with? Now if the domain
object were doing plain JDBC, and thus trying to be JATO independent, that
would be different. However, you could still implement the Model interface
on the object (or use BeanAdapterModel) to integrate it seamlessly with the
View tier.

Subject: [SunONE-JATO] Re: Using an object to store and display data
Craig,
I think it all finally makes sense. First, your assumption is
correct regarding the process flow. The ViewBean will interact with
a custom Javabean which will then in turn interact with a SQL Model
to access the database. So now let me make sure I understand what I
need to do. Basically the custom Javabean will have a method to get
the SQLModel. I would then invoke the setValue method on the

Not sure what you mean by "interface this BeanAdapterModel ... witha
query model". Does this mean that you have a ViewBean the interactswith
a custom JavaBean via the BeanAdpterModel wrapper, and from the
JavaBean you are interacting with the SQL Model?
So it looks like this: ViewBean > BeanAdapterModel(Custom JavaBean)
SQL Model > RDBMS
That's what I am reading anyway. Please explain this to me.
Would I need to make direct JDBC calls
from my custom model instead of letting JATO dynamically create
the
calls for me?
If my assumptions above are correct, then the custom JavaBean cansimply
use the SQL Model in exactly the same manner as the ViewBean,otherwise,
if no SQL Model is involved, then yes, you need to handle JDBCdirectly,
which is fine, if you do it "right" (connection pooling, result set
handling, etc.).

http://developer.iplanet.com/tech/appserver/framework/index.jspPersonally, I think there is little or no value to creating a "domain"
object that itself relies on a JATO QueryModel internally, but hides that
fact and requires use of BeanAdapterModel.
However, you could still implement the Model interface
on the object (or use BeanAdapterModel) to integrate it seamlessly with the
View tier.

Craig,
I think it all finally makes sense. First, your assumption is
correct regarding the process flow. The ViewBean will interact with
a custom Javabean which will then in turn interact with a SQL Model
to access the database. So now let me make sure I understand what I
need to do. Basically the custom Javabean will have a method to get
the SQLModel. I would then invoke the setValue method on the
SQLModel and call the appropriate execute method( e.g.,
executeUpdate, etc. ) just like I would do from a ViewBean. Does
this sound correct?
Thanks,
Greg

Hello,
I am trying to calculate the coherence of a stimulus and response
signal using the Network Functions (avg) VI's. The problem is that I
always get a coherence of "1" at all frequencies. This problem is
already known (see KnowledgeBase document: Why is the Network Functions (avg) VI's Coherence Function Output "1"?).
My trouble is that the described solution (-> the stimulus and response input matrices need to have at least two rows to get non-unity coherence values) doesn't help me much, because I only have one array of stimulus data and one array of response values.
Thus, how can I fullfil the 'coherence-criteria' to input at least two rows of data each when I just have one row of data each?
Any hint or idea is very much appreciated. Thanks!
HorstWith this weird board layout, I'm not sure whether you were asking me, but, on the assumption that you were, here goes:
I found no need to use the cross-power spectrum and power spectrum blocks
1... I was looking for speed.
2... I already had the component spectral data there, for other purposes. From that, it's nothing but addition and multiplication.
3... The "easy" VIs, assume a time wave input, as I recall. Which means they would take the same spectrum of the same timewave several times, where I only do it once.
I have attached PNGs of my code.
The PROCESS CHANNEL vi accepts the time wave and:
1... Removes DC value.
2... Integrates (optional, used for certain sensors).
3... Windows (Hanning, etc. - optional)
4... Finds spectrum.
5... Removes spectral mirrors.
6... Scales into Eng. units.
7... From there, you COULD use COMPLEX-TO-POLAR, but I don't care about the phase data, and I need the MAG^2 data anyway, so I rolled my own COMPLEX-TO-MAG code.
The above is done on each channel. The PROCESS DATA vi calls the above with data for each channel. The 1st channel in the list is required to be the reference (stimulus) channel.
After looping over each channel, we have the Sxx, Syy, and Sxy terms. This code contains some averaging and peak-picking stuff that's not relevant.
From there, it's straightforward to ger XFER = Sxy/Sxx and COHERENCE = |Sxy|^2 / (Sxx * Syy)
Note that it uses the MAGNITUDE SQUARED of Sxy. Again, if you use the "easy" stuff, it will do a square-root operation that you just have to reverse - it is obtained faster by the sum of the squares of the real and imag parts.
Hope this helps.

When / why use XML to store data instead of database table ?
Hi All,
I still not use XML much in applications and don't know much about its utilization.
I read here and there about storing data as XML instead of into database tables.
- could any body please tell me when / why use XML to store data instead of database table ?
e.g : store inventory per warehouse in XML format. ?
- What is the other cases or reasons of extracting database records into XML or vice versa ?
- is there any good pdf on this ?
Thank you for your help,
xtantoIt depends entirely what you want to accomplish with the 'XML in the database'. There are basically 3 independent methods: As CLOB, as XMLType views or as native XMLType 'columns'
Each method has advantages and disadvantages, especially in the performance vs purpose tradeoff.
The Oracled Press book "Oracle Database 10g XML & SQL Design, Build, & Manage XML Applications in Java, C, C++, & PL/SQL" is highly recommended for anyone interested in Oracle and XML. http://books.mcgraw-hill.com/getbook.php?isbn=0072229527&template=oraclepress -
Multiple clobs in a single row of data
I have several clobs in a single row of data and have created a procedure where I attempt to display the first 4k of each clob.
using a for loop cursor I select all of the clobs in a row at the same time and then I use dbms_lob.read to get the first 4k of data.
For the first lob of each row everything works fine but when I attempt to dbms_lob.read the second one I get an "ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: invalid LOB locator specified: ORA-22275" and I'm not sure why?
does anyone know of an example where two or more clobs are selected and then converted to 4K varchars?

Hi Guys
create table JobWorker
(JobID Integer,
JobName char(20),
Name char(20),

JobRating char(20),
Primary Key (JobID));
Above is my table that requires rows of data.

END IF;
IF (v_temp = 1) THEN

END IF;
END LOOP;
END;
It does work...but the following problems I get are...
As you can see I have populated the tables as a Loop..
But if I was to generate a statement : Select * from JobWorker WHERE Name = 'Joe Hoffland';
It provides me with the result as 'No Rows Selected'.
The first Insert consists of someone called Richard Smith. Every row of data is only populated with his name and his row of data.
I cannot get the other 9 insert rows to work....
Is there something wrong with the above code? I require your help guys! Thank You!Incrementing v_temp would help :). Also column department length is too small. You need to increase it to 25. And sing CHAR isn't a good idea. Use VARCHAR2 instead:

Copy a certain row of data into the next row in a same internal table ??
HI, guys.
May i know how to copy a certain row of data into the next row in a same internal table ?? Bcz I plan to update a certain colum of data in the row just now into another value..
For example:-
*at first...
ebeln1 ebelp1 xblnr1
ebeln2 ebelp2 xblnr2
ebeln3 ebelp3 xblnr3
*after that, become...
ebeln1 ebelp1 xblnr1
ebeln2 ebelp2 xblnr2
ebeln2 ebelp2 xblnr4
ebeln2 ebelp2 xblnr5
ebeln3 ebelp3 xblnr3
Thanks in advance.hi,
If you have this kind of requirement then you must be having 2 internal tables ,one existing data and 2nd from which you have to insert the records into 1st table.
so in this case,
loop at itab1.
v_index = sy-tabix.
loop at itab2 into wa where pri_key = itab1-pri_key.
v_index = v_index + 1.
insert wa into itab index v_index.
endloop.
endloop.
Using this code ,your data records similar to your 1st tables primary key records will get inserted into table.
