Using ssh as an http proxy on Arch [SOLVED]

I read this article and would like to use a friend's debian box as a www proxy.  I ssh'ed into it using the following command from my Arch box:
$ ssh user@ip -D 8000
As I understand it, his box is now acting as a SOCKS-type (pseudo)server.  I configured firefox to use 'localhost' and port '8000' as a proxy but can't connect to any websites.  I tried switching between SOCKS4 and SOCKS5 but with no effect.  Is there a setting somewhere on my Arch box that would disallow this behavior (something in /etc/hosts.deny or the like)?
I know this works, because I did it before I started using Arch back when I had Ubuntu installed.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the quick reply.  I got it working:
$ ssh -D 8000 user@host
Now, in firefox, only add 127.0.0.1 to your SOCKS proxy line (and the correct port number).  Now check the SOCKS4 radio box and clear the IP addy from the other proxy boxes.  This works for me now, although I get the following error in the ssh window (but it still functions):
channel 4: open failed: administratively prohibited: open failed

  • Web service client ignores http proxy settings

    I have a web service client using Weblogic's web service client library. I'm trying to instruct it to use a http proxy. I've set all the following system properties:
    -Dhttp.proxyHost=127.0.0.1
    -Dhttp.proxyPort=8080 -Dweblogic.webservice.transport.http.proxy.host=127.0.0.1 -Dweblogic.webservice.transport.http.proxy.port=8080
    No traffic is passing through the proxy.
    When the proxy is down, the application works fine too. I suspect that the proxy settings are completely ignored for some reason.
    I'm using Weblogic 8.1 SP4 on a Windows XP box and JDK 1.4.2 (Sun's bundled JDK with Weblogic).

    Sorry about the delay,
    You just need to use the standard java http proxy properties, take a look at:
    http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/A97329_03/web.902/a95453/useservices.htm
    Does this help?

    You can't. What you can do is run a local http proxy that uses the ssh-created Socks5 as parent. Example config for polipo:
    daemonise=true
    proxyAddress=127.0.0.1
    proxyName=localhost
    allowedClients=127.0.0.1
    socksParentProxy=localhost:7777
    socksProxyType=socks5
    7777 is an example, use $myport there. The default polipo port is 8123, meaning apps should be configured to use localhost:8123 as proxy.
    Thanks for your help! It's worked very good and my problem is solved.
    For installing and configuration polipo, other users can read this:

  • SSH through http proxy

    Hi,
    Currently I have to pass all traffic through a http proxy that only lets ports 25, 80 and 443 through.
    I'd like to ssh to a machine in our office outside of the above network and using Putty on Windows I can set the proxy details with username and password and it works fine as I have set my listing machine to use port 443.
    How can I achieve the same access through the proxy with ssh on Mac? I have tested that ssh with port 443 works when not using the proxy so it seems the proxy is the issue.

    You could use Corkscrew
    <http://wiki.kartbuilding.net/index.php/Corkscrew-_ssh_overhttps>
    You might also look into Hamachi (VPN)

  • What HTTP Proxy settings to use and when?

    On the Wi-Fi Networks menu there are three options for HTTP Proxy - Off, Manual, Auto
    Which one should I use and when/why would I use the others?
    thx, gordo

    99% of the time, you should have the proxy settings turned off. Unless you are trying to connect to a corporate network, or some other network that requires a proxy server. In that case you would need to talk to the network administrators to obtain the settings you would need. If your just connecting to your wireless network at home, your almost for sure not going to need to enter anything for the proxy server settings.

  • Unable to use HTTPS proxy when redirecting HTTP/HTTPS via NAT

    I'm trying to get the WSA to work when redirecting HTTP and HTTPS traffic along the lines of the following:
    object network WSA-HOST

    object service WSA-HTTP-DEST-PORT
          service tcp destination eq 8080
    object service ORIG-HTTPS-PORT
          service tcp destination eq https
    object service WSA-HTTPS-DEST-PORT
          service tcp destination eq https  << also tried 8080 etc.
    nat (inside,outside) source dynamic obj-10.0.1.0 interface destination static obj_any WSA-HOST service ORIG-HTTP-PORT WSA-HTTP-DEST-PORT
    nat (inside,outside) source dynamic obj-10.0.1.0 interface destination static obj_any WSA-PROXY-HOST service ORIG-HTTPS-PORT WSA-HTTPS-DEST-PORT
    This works just fine for HTTP, but with HTTPS I get the following response from the Ironport WSA:
    Based on your corporate access policies, access to this web site ( https://www.rbsdigital.com/ ) has been blocked.

    If anyone has any idea why the WSA simply denies the connection instead of proxying it then I'd be grateful.
    The WSA and the decryption policies work fine in explisit mode.
    Thanks in advance!

    The policy doesn't require authentication. Now here are two tests I did, seconds apart, from the same client on 10.0.4.140:

    Second test case is when I reconfigured the browser to explisitely use the WSA as a proxy on port 8080:
    1329757138.274 344 10.0.4.140 TCP_CLIENT_REFRESH_MISS_SSL/200 39 CONNECT tunnel://www.rbsdigital.com:443/ - DIRECT/www.rbsdigital.com - DECRYPT_WBRS_7-DefaultGroup-UK_Office-NONE-NONE-NONE-DefaultGroup -

    Non-categorised stuff should be passed through:
    Global Policy
    Identity: All
    Pass Through: 1
    Monitor: 65
    Disabled
    Pass Through
    Any thoughts ?

  • Custom hostname verifier not used when business services use a http proxy

    On OSB 10.3, we have a business services with an https end point. To access this end point, the business service used an http proxy.
    The certificate of the business endpoint is a wildcard certificate *.certificate.be . So we have a custom hostname verifier defined in the ssl configuration on the weblogic Server
    As we can see with the verbose mode at the jvm, the custom hostname verifier is not used when we use a http proxy in the business service. Osb use a ALSBHostnameVerifier and this one the defaulthostName

  • Help Please: Mail will not work when Wifi uses HTTP Proxy

    I am using an IPad 2 under iOS5. At work, I can connect to the internet using Safari via our wifi network with no problems. This requires access via a manually set HTTP Proxy.
    However, all attempts to create or use a (GMail) account have failed. I know that the mail account works because I have used it with no problems via my home wifi network. It would appear that Mail is not using the wifi proxy information in settings.
    The same was true under iOS4, but I would have hoped that a fix would have appeared in iOS5.
    Can anyone offer help or advice as to how I get around this problem?

    We are trying to install arch on five machines using ssh for our clusters lessons, using VirtualBox. We have arch installed on a machine called "Master" and from this we are using PXE server to load Arch (core) iso on the clients. PXE runs fine but for our purpose we have some troubles.
    First of all, we need to boot arch directly, without "Options screen" (screen where you can choose between Load arch, load another OS, reboot, etc...), we NEED to boot arch without user intervention. Then, we need to run up ssh server automatically (maybe parsing any option on PXE config file). And the last issue is to login on client machine as root.
    If we run sshd and allow to connect giving permissions on /etc/hosts.allow file and then try to login on client from Master as root, we can't do this because root has no password but ssh requieres it, this is a problem.
    In short, we need at least to solve this problems:
    * Load arch image directly, skipping load screen.
    * Run sshd on startup and allow access
    * Be able to login as root from our "Master" machine
    Any idea of that? We are thinking about to make an image of our Master machine and use it to offer with PXE, but I think this is a bad idea because client machines has not partitions and our fstab file will try to mount filesystems and this is a problem.
    Thanks for your help, god will be grateful for it and kill no more kittys and sorry for the brick!

    OK after my 4th attempt, i got it
    My initial situation
    fdsik -l (GPT table format)
    Gerät boot. Anfang Ende Blöcke Id System
    /dev/sda1 1 26 204819+ ee GPT
    /dev/sda2 26 36747 294963432 af HFS / HFS+
    /dev/sda3 * 61682 77826 129678336 7 HPFS/NTFS
    /dev/sda4 36747 61438 198331055 83 Linux
    So, I had Ubuntu running on sda4 (ext4).
    What I did
    1. Installed rEFIT on Mac OS X, and after two reboots it showed up.
    2. In the rEFIT menu, Synchronized with the Partition tool my MBR and GPT table.
    3. Opened Gparted on an ubuntu live cd, in order to format my ext4 partition
    4. Installed Arch using the normal installation procedure, but I skipped the partitioning section, I did only the file system mountpoints step, selecting my sda4 partition.
    5. Installed grub (not grub2) on /dev/sda, the mbr (not /dev/sda4), and activated the windows section in menu.lst
    6. After reboot, I selected from rEFIT the Windows logo (linux logo doesn't work), through the windows logo i get in the standard grub menu, where I can select Windows or Arch!
    Now I'll remove rEFIT and boot trough normal mac os x's bootcamp tool. (if you select windows you get in the grub menu)
    Hope this helps someone!

  • Using a HTTP destination through a HTTP proxy

    Hi there!
    I have written a Web Dynpro application that connects to a web service using a web service model. The request is configured to use a HTTP destination by means of the _setHTTPDestinationName() method. I configured the HTTP destination in the visual administrator and it uses Logon ticket to authenticate.
    All this works perfectly in my test environment. Unfortunately in my production environment the web service must be accessed through a HTTP proxy and I could not find where to configure the proxy settings for HTTP destinations.
    I found some information about "open a transaction in SICF" an so on which doesn't help me because I have no ABAP client.
    I found some information about configuring proxies in the NWA but this does not seem to apply to my NW version, wich is 2004 SP16.
    Any clues?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Olivier,
    thank you for your reply.
    Is there really a possiblity to configure a proxy for any given HTTP Destination in ABAP? Because if there is, I cannot believe that there is no equivalent in Java. As there is no such a thing as a HTTP Destination "for ABAP" and a HTTP Destination "for Java", what would happen if I used the HTTP Destination with proxy settings created in ABAP for my Java program?
    There is another way to use a proxy which I found by analysing the generated Java classes of my web service model. You can do the following:
    SomeServiceImpl service = SomeDMSModel.getServiceImpl();
    service.setHTTPProxyResolver(new HTTPProxyResolver() {
      HTTPProxy proxy;
      public HTTPProxy getHTTPProxyForHost(String host) throws RemoteException {
        if (this.proxy == null) {
          this.proxy = new HTTPProxy();
          this.proxy.setProxyHost("proxy.company.com");
          this.proxy.setProxyPort(1234);
        return this.proxy;
    This is NOT a good way to do it, as it transfers a portal administration task to the programmer, but it shows that the functionality is present in Java.
    So I haven't given up on finding where it has to be configured...
