Using udev devices for ASM disk on Linux

Hello all,
I need details related to using udev devices as ASM disk on Linux.
What I want to know is, once i get the list of ASM Disks that are used to create the DiskGroups, based on the path of the Disk (whether /dev/sdj or /dev/dm-3 or /dev/asm_udev_device, /dev/vx/<vxvm-volume>, /dev/<lvm-volume>) how do i get to know if the device type is a udev device?
I want to know an automated process, so that i can script it out to separate out each device easily.
Please let me know if anyone has expertise on using udev devices with Oracle ASM.
I have referred the link but no much details available http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/asm/pdf/device-mapper-udev-crs-asm%20rh4.pdf
Further, the behavior of udevinfo command is very different across version of Linux. From Suse 10 onwards, udevadm has to be used instead.
Its confusing to me.
Please help.
~Sumeet.

  • Using NFS file for ASM

    hello to all
I am familar with ASM and NFS but I don't know what is mean of using NFS file for ASM
can you explain for me ? or do you know manual for this on WEB ?
    thanks

I don't think ASM via NFS is optimal.
You need to create your NFS mounts. Then use dd to create files in your various NFS mounts and then present these files to ASM as disks.

  • Configuring Filesystem Free Disks for ASM ? Can you use free space for ASM

Is there a way to dedicate the available disk space for ASM in order to create a database under ASM?
I was hoping that I would not have to reinstall the Linux OS Enterprise 5 (Red Hat). So I de-installed my 2-node RAC environment, installed the ASM required RPMs for Red Hat linux Enterperise 5 and then proceeded to reinstall 11g Clusterware and set "Configure Automatic Storage Management (ASM)".
    Did I miss something? THanks

    Thank you.
I have 3 VM-Oracle guests running Oracle 11g. When I've used NFS as share that worked fine, however I was not using ASM. I know wish to get smart about ASM implementation.

    Server2(rac2) Linux E5 64bit
    Server3(asm) Linux E5 64bit (I created four partitions

    ./oracleasm createdisk VOTDISK /dev/xvda11 OK

    ./oracleasm createdisk OFRDISK /dev/xvda13 OK
    On Node1 and Node 2
    ./oracleasm scandisk
Scanning the system for Oracle ASMLib disks: OK
After this should I or how do you make a partition shared? Could I used NFS? so that I can proceed with the RAC install and then create database .

  • Do not use multiple devices for BT email

I have been advised by the Yahoo email support team that my account is being locked every few hours because I use multiple devices and the server sees multiple requests to 'sync' email from one account onto several devices as malicious activity.  I use outlook on three PCs (a desktop and a couple of laptops) and the default email client on a stock Android.
The advice I've been asked to follow is to ensure I close outlook (on which I view several email accounts) every time I walk away from my desk and then enable email sync on my phone.  On return to my desk I should reverse the process. I'll do this in the short term as it will take a few days to switch from BT email to another provider but this is not sustainable.
I find it hard to believe that the btinternet system isn't robust enough to accept single user/multiple device scenarios.  The problem has only manifested this week so I suspect it will be due to a change in system protocol/software as I have had a few years of trouble free multiple device access until this point.
I'm interested in other peoples' experience of this as it's the only email service I use which has exhibited this issue in recent years.
    Solved!

There are several reasons why you get password rejected messages however based on the information you have supplied I have the following observations and advice.
    1.  The failure message incorrect in that your username and password is likely to be correct but is being rejected for another reason.
    2.  The most likely cause is some form of timeout.
    3.  Providing you have a reasonably fast connection the timeout is likely to be because your account is being accessed by two or more of your devices at the same time.
    4. To stop this happening you need to do the following.
    a)  Do not use webmail unless you have to.
    b)  If you do use webmail make sure that you sign out when finished.
    c)  Make sure that all your devices do not check for emails automatically but require manual intervention.
Not sure this is strictly necessary, unlikely devices will be polling simultaneously.
    d)  Use POP instead of IMAP in email clients.
    e)  Make sure smartphones and  tablets have Email accounts Push "off "and Fetch data "manually".
Not sure this is strictly necessary, unlikely devices will be polling simultaneously. Agree with Push 'off'

  • How to set default audio device for java apps on Linux?

I would like to find a way to choose a particular (ALSA) audio device for java applications. How can this be done without reprogramming the application or changing the default ALSA device? I came across "sound.properties", but could not find any information how to use this file on an ALSA system.
    Thanks for any help, Mark

Eugenia wrote:Well, it's still not good enough.
We can't satisfy everyone. What you want is a corner case. For most people ALSA and dmix works appropriately, and that is what esd uses by default. We cannot document and automate every configuration possible. That's up to the users.
However, if you don't want to restart gnome, try the below... I make a few assumptions, but even if they're wrong, they're hardly difficult to work around.
Just copy the /etc/esd.conf to ~/.esd.conf, make your change, then do killall esd. Presumably gnome will restart esd, and it ought to read your local config. If it doesnt, start it yourself.
Feel free to write a script that automates this, or document it on the wiki.
I have to restart Gnome to get this thing working. Other OSes *automatically* can use an alternative device. But if I change ESD, I will have to restart Gnome, no?
Well, if you try my suggestion above, no. You can restart esd yourself. And that's what all the other distros do, except with some fancy GUI.

  • I have a 2nd generation iPod touch and it shows to be connected to WiFi but will not access the internet, please tell me what i can do, because i use this device for work and it make things difficult that it will not work now. Please help, thank you!

I really need help, my ipod shows to connect to the WiFi but then it will not let me use the interent it says no connection but according to my screen i have WiFi connection, i am very confused an i would really appriciate it if someone could help me sort out this problem so i can start using my iPod for work again.

Even though the iPod shows as been connected, it might not have actually received a valid IP address via DHCP from your Wi-Fi access point or router.  Head to Settings -> Wi-Fi and tap the > next to the network you are connected. If 169.xxx.xxx.xxx is listed for an IP Address, then your iPod did not receive a valid IP address.  To correct this you can reboot your router by unplugging it from power for about 30 seconds.
It wouldn't hurt to also reset your iPod.  To do this, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.

  • OCFS2 , ASM and Raw Device for Voting Disk and OCR

    Dear all ,
My manager assigned me to establish a 11gRAC , 3 node on OEL. He likes to locate ASM with datafiles , at the same time, 2 OCR vol on OCFS2 and RawDevice respectively , 2 voting disks on OCFS2 and RawDevice respectively also.
    This really annoys me .
Oh all experts, could anybody give me some advices ? Can those stuff be co-existed ?

Not a great idea to introduce additional s/w layers between the CRS software and its OCR and voting disks. If ocfs2 is for example used as a shared file system for these devices (files), then the ocfs2 cluster s/w needs to be up and running, the shared devices mounted, before CRS can successfully start. Thus any problem with the ocfs2 stack, will impact on CRS. Why? What does ocfs2 buy you in this regard? What are the benefits that justifies the increased complexity and the dependency of CRS on another s/w layer?
Fewer moving parts means less complexity, less stuff that needs to be configured and can go wrong. In fact, some users had perception that " Pay mroe so that Get more".

  • My HD needs to be reformatted according to Disk Utility, but even when I use an external device for startup, Disk Utility cannot reformat the HD

I have a Macbook with a 500 GB Hard Drive. A routine check on Disk Utility told me the disk needed to be reformatted. I restarted from an external USB drive, but when I try to use Disk Utility to repair the HD or to reformat it, Disk Utility is unable to do anything with the HD (cannot repair, cannot erase, cannot reformat the HD).  Is there a utility App that can help me with this, or is the HD unrecoverable?

    Hi
Thanks very much for your reply. We have been starting up from a backup (USB) drive and use the disk utility that is on the backup drive so the internal (problem) HD is not being used for anything (except for wanting to repair it). Still Disk Utility cannot reformat or repair the drive. I have also run Onyx but it tells me everything is OK on the drive.
But I have made a little progress. Using my old install disk for Snow Leopard (10.6.3) I have managed to do a fresh install of the system on the internal HD. Unfortunately, I also asked the install disk to transfer/migrate the settings and documents from the backup drive back onto my internal HD. The install appeared to work, but then it got hung up on copying the documents from my backup drive to the HD. After letting it sit for 2 days without going anywhere, I stopped the install process. I am going to try again, just using my Snow Leopard  CD to install Snow Leopard, and nothing else. If that works, I will then get on to the problem of copying the rest of the settings and documents from my backup.
But since the Mac works OK off the USB  backup, and will also run off the install CD, I am guessing the problem is with the HD and the only solution might be to replace it if I can't repair it. But the macbook is several years old, and I am not sure it is worth buying a new HD for it.

    What is the best config?

      `- 0:0:0:3 sdd 8:48  active ready running
    Thank you

ASMLib does not handle device path failover, which is the purpose of DM multipath. ASM cannot handle seeing the same disk twice. If it does, it will cause an error. There are special considerations when using ASMLib with Multipath and it is required to configure ASMLib to only use the multipath access point:
A single disk can appear three times in a multipath configuration:
The first path to the disk
The second path to the disk
    The multipath access point

  • Changing devices for ASM Volumes

    Hi,
I have a two node RAC Cluster Setup 10gR2.
I created the ASM Volumes for the database, during the configuration, by the commands
    # /etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk VOL1 /dev/sdb2
I have three Volumes made of /devsdb2, /dev/sdb3 and /dev/sdb4.
Is there a way I can change the devices to /dev/sdd2,/dev/sdd3 and /dev/sdd4 for the ASM Volumes.

    Hey all,
Thanx you all for your support.
It worked. The ownership and permissions are not getting reverted back.
But seriously, the rc.local file is not in */etc/init.d/*
    It is in */etc*
Infact, I have created a file rc.local in */etc/init.d/*, made the entries, and restarted the system, but of no use.
Then I found the rc.local file in */etc*, made the changes and tested by restarting the system, and it worked.
Thank you all guys. gr8 job..
    Thanx again ...
    Cheers,

  • I have an ipod and an iphone. I would like to use both devices for my work and home computer. But it tells me that its installed to another library and will delete all items to sync to itunes. Is there a way to do this without deleting?

OK....... I have an Ipod and an Iphone. Would like all the Movies and music i have on both. My computer broke and now the only music i have is on ipod. It wont let me transfer to itunes. It says this device is linked to a different library and if i want to sync to a new one and delete everything on it. UH....NO   Is there a way to do this without deleting ? All purchases were made though the same apple id.

    - An iPod can only sync with one iTunes library. Yu can however manage music and videos among different computers by:
Using iPhone, iPad, or iPod with multiple computers
    - To change syncing computer, move all the media to compute r#2
    - Connect the iPod to #2 and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup
Note tha the iPod backup the iTunes makes does not include synced media like apps and music.

  • Can I use multiple device for reading ebook ?

My company have own shop that will be integrated with ACS4 and one important feature of my shop is
that "customer pay for single ebook then they can read that ebook on multiple devices that is registered with my shop".
And my shop can manage, add, edit and remove customer device itself. Is it possible to do that ?
I notice that when I download ebook from sample store I can copy acsm file to my friend and he can open acsm file then download an ebook
via adobe digital edition. How can I specific only user who buy ebook can download ?

Yes and no.  Yes, if you sell a book through ACS4 (without adding a device restring), the user can read the on any computer or device that they have activated with their Adobe DRM account.  No you can not manage these devices on your site or specify a subset other than have a single device restriction.
