/usr/bin/diff problem

Hi,
we just migrated one of our apps from Solaris 8 to Solaris 10.
One issue we noticed is the following:
Once a day an RCS-controlled ASCII text configuration database is being updated. This file has a size of about 260 MB.
As per normal RCS procedure, before the new file is checked in, it's being compared to the old version using /usr/bin/diff.
On the old Server (Netra T4, Solaris 8) the diff was running for about 15 Minutes.
On the new Server (V245, Solaris 10) the diff now takes 2 1/2 hours !!
I haven't found an obvious cause for this, so I was thinking about using dtrace to find out why the diff on the new server is taking that long.
On the other side, I don't have much experience with dtrace yet....
I would very much appreciate any help you could offer to help me find the problem.
thanks

    What exactly have you been reading? Because if you take /usr/share/pacman/PKGBUILD.proto or read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Creating_Packages, you can't get to what you have without some serious changes. It seems like you took some bad and old PKGBUILD (not PKGFILE) as a starting point instead of more official/up-to-date docs.
    At the very least you should read the section about the package() function.
    Edit: now you can copy/paste from the above reply, but try to understand how makepkg works. And since you passed the prefix to ./configure, it's unlikely that you'll need it again for the install step.

  • Arch + PHP-53-fpm (Binaries move to /usr/bin problem)

    Hi all,
    Trying to update my system, and walked into this:
    https://www.archlinux.org/news/binaries … ervention/
    pacman -Qqo /bin /sbin /usr/sbin | pacman -Qm -
    Output:
    php53-fpm 5.3.20-1
    ...which was expected; I have to run php 5.3 here.
    Can someone guide me in the right direction?
    I will answer any questions right away.
    Not looking for a complete answer, but simply don't know where to start (too many trees in the forest atm).
    I've Googled and tried many things by now, without any luck - which resulted in me posting this.
    pacman -Syu
    Output:
    error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
    filesystem: /bin exists in filesystem
    filesystem: /sbin exists in filesystem
    filesystem: /usr/sbin exists in filesystem
    Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.

    Where did that package come from, anyway?
    Thanks, I was just reading an article about this - this must be the way to go
    Will give it a try.
    Package comes from AUR, if I remember correctly.

  • Missing /usr/bin/reboot

    i use GNOME and arch is up to date as it can be after doing a "pacman -Syu".
    when i use GNOME's shutdown-dialog to reboot the system, GNOME and X stop as they should, but then the system gives a message, "Command failed /usr/bin/reboot" and a short description that it wasn't found.
    the system then takes a short breath of about 5-10 seconds and reboots as it should.
    well, there is no /usr/bin/reboot on my harddisk, just /sbin/reboot...why?
    had the same thing some days ago on another system. was /usr/bin/reboot removed during one of the last updates and GNOME still tries to use it instead of /sbin/reboot?
    Thanks!
    Cheers!

    I had this problem as well and couldn't work out what I had done wrong - I hadn't been fiddling with any settings, honest.  Anyway, it first occurred last Saturday when I shutdown my PC after these updates:
    [2008-02-02 07:49] synchronizing package lists
    [2008-02-02 07:49] starting full system upgrade
    [2008-02-02 07:50] upgraded bash (3.2.025-4 -> 3.2.033-2)

    [2008-02-02 07:50] upgraded filesystem (2007.11-3 -> 2007.11-6)

    [2008-02-02 07:50] upgraded mkinitcpio (0.5.17-1 -> 0.5.17-2)
    [2008-02-02 07:50] upgraded mpg123 (1.1.0-3 -> 1.2.0-1)
    and not only was there an error about the missing file but gdm-binary segfaulted.  Here's the entry from everything.log:
    Feb 2 09:53:50 gconfd (david-9810): Exiting
    Feb 2 09:53:50 darkstar gdm-binary[9706]: WARNING: Command failed /usr/bin/poweroff: Failed to execute child process "/usr/bin/poweroff" (No such file or directory)

    Thing is, looking back through older log entries, the warning about failing to execute /usr/bin/reboot or /usr/bin /poweroff is always there on reboot/shutdown but I had never before seen it echoed to the screen.  Anyway, I wasn't sure where to report the bug but made my own fix in the meantime by adding the following to the daemon section of /etc/gdm/defaults.conf
    RebootCommand=/sbin/reboot
    HaltCommand=/sbin/poweroff
    The other consequence of those Saturday updates, which hasn't gone away yet, is that the normal shutdown messages - stopping this, stopping that etc. - don't always appear.  It's not consistent but more often than not gnome will drop to a console with a login prompt and my PC will shutdown a few seconds later  If I don't start gnome and just run /sbin/poweroff from the console then the usual messages will appear.  As far as I can tell, however, my PC is shutting down properly despite the lack of messages.
    EDIT: And /sbin is in my path.
    EDIT 1: And the segfaults continue (I thought that they'd gone away):
    Feb 6 23:27:08 gconfd (david-9811): Exiting
    Feb 6 23:27:09 darkstar shutdown[15679]: shutting down for system halt
    Feb 6 23:27:09 darkstar init: Switching to runlevel: 0

  • Command Line Tools installs the latest version of clang (and others) in /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/... but not in /usr/bin/

    I've upgraded Xcode to the latest 5.1 Installed Command Line Tools via xcode-select --install Homebrew tells me "A newer Command Line Tools release is available"
    brew --config:
    Xcode: 5.1 CLT: 5.1.0.0.1.1393561416 LLVM-GCC: build 2336 Clang: 3.1 build 318
    Checking my clang executable:
    $ /usr/bin/clang --version Apple clang version 3.1 (tags/Apple/clang-318.0.58) (based on LLVM 3.1svn)
    $ /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/usr/bin/clang --version Apple LLVM version 5.1 (clang-503.0.38) (based on LLVM 3.4svn)
    So it appears Command Line Tools didn't install clang (and perhaps other executables) into /usr/bin? I checked my other laptop (w/ Mavericks), and /usr/bin/clang is version 5.1.
    So I'm guessing this is the problem? I've tried to reinstall Command Line Tools as sudo, but now it won't let me install again (says software isn't currently available).
    Can anyone help me with this? I've spent hours on it now, but can't find a solution.
    Thanks

    As per Note 1266729.1 : "Applying Patch 8557019 and encounter /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -ldeb error running make -f ins_procbuilder.mk install" this can be fixed by appying patch 8551790 first.

  • [Solved] How to save a file in /usr/bin/local using gedit as an admin?

    In my attempt to run these two programs:
    https://github.com/kerchen/export_gr2evernote
    https://github.com/spiermar/bookmarks2evernote
    I noticed they assumed the default python is python 2. I have python 3.3.1 and 2.6.8. I'm following the instructions at: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Py … ld_scripts
    Created a file with this:
    #!/bin/bash
    script=`readlink -f -- "$1"`
    case "$script" in
    /home/Dropbox/export_gr2evernote-master1/*|/home/Dropbox/bookmarks2evernote2/*)
        exec python2 "$@"
    esac
    exec python3 "$@"
    I then, tried to save it as p2 under /usr/local/bin/ where the only thing that's there is meteor, node, and npm, and it throws me an error saying I don't have enough permissions.
    How do I save p2 as an admin in /usr/bin/local using gedit?
    I've searched on the forums 'create a file in /usr/' and I haven't found anything. Can someone please help me?

    I did everything exactly like the wiki said, what seems to be the problem?
    OK. Looking at the 2 scripts you quoted, neither one is using a shbang line to set a python version to call. Without that, the python intercept doesn't even come into play. The problem that I see is the way you are starting it:
    sudo nano /usr/local/bin/python
    Is root really necessary for these if they are in your /home/<user>/Dropbox/ directory. And it appears that you are assuming python3 when you start them that way. If you are going to use that method and they are indeed python2 scripts, then change your command to this:
    #python evernote2enex.py -m 10
    You might try it as your normal user too in case root isn't really required.
    I tested out the first ten with:
    #python2 export2enex.py -m 10
    it worked!
    then proceded with
    #python2 export2enex.py GStarred -n exported.enex
    The script is fully functional. Thanks man!
    Actually, you're not even using the script when starting your python scripts that way. You are explicitly calling either python3 (python) or python2 (python2) to run the indicated python script and not even touching the work around /usr/local/bin/python script. If your python script started with a line like either :
    #!/usr/bin/env python
    or:
    #!/usr/bin/python
    And was executable, such that you called it by it's name, i.e. "someprogram.py", then the python script in /usr/local/bin/ would take precedence and effectively intercept the python call and choose the appropriate version of python as long as the path to the directory where "someprogram.py" resides is specified in that /usr/local/bin/python script.

  • Need to delete /usr/bin without using terminal

    In a bit of a bind.
    All how-tos detailing how to delete or alter the /usr/bin file involve terminal, but terminal won't work b/c of this error
    login: PAM Error (line 396): System error
    login: Could not determine audit condition
    [Process completed]
    I alterred something in usr/bin and need to change it but must do so with some other program other than terminal (altering that usr/bin file will then fix terminal).
    Kind of a chicken or egg problem.

    I take it you're no Unix hand, so I hope you otherwise know what you're doing since deleting /usr/bin will remove important files used by the operating system.
    Boot into single-user mode. At the prompt enter:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    If you receive a message that says "*** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***" then re-run the command until you receive a message that says "** The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK." If you re-run the command more than seven times and do not get the OK message, then the drive cannot be repaired this way.
    Next enter:
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    This will make the filesystem writeable. You can navigate by entering:
    cd /usr/bin
    This will take you to the /usr/bin directory. Note that in single-user mode you are root. Much damage can be done if you aren't careful. When you finish enter:
    reboot

  • Where are the settings for the "open" command, located at /usr/bin/open?

    I have Windows XP installed on a partition on my Macbook and I use Parallels to access some of the Windows applications.
    When I am in Mac OS X, and I don't even have a virtual machine running, if I enter the following command in the terminal, I get some really strange behavior:
    /usr/bin/open -a firefox http://localhost/~myname/somewebpage.html
    The open command will launch firefox within Mac OS X and display the page, but, it WILL ALSO TRY TO LAUNCH FIREFOX VIA PARALLELS. So, it starts a Parallels session and tries to launch Firefox. I see the Firefox icon in my dock twice, once normally, and once with the Parallels version of the Firefox icon. But, I cannot view the Parallels instance of Firefox.
    In order to debug this, I removed Firefox from Mac OS X (deleted Firefox.app from my applications folder) and I un-installed it from the windows partition using Add/Remove programs in windows.
    Now, running the open command as stated above launches Safari in Mac OS X and it still launches parrallels.
    Where is the list of application associations that the "open" command uses? I assume there is some incorrect associate that is causing this but, I have no idea how to find it.
    Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

    Thank you for your reply.
    I actually checked out the man page for "open" but, I was unable to find LaunchServices in the finder. I was hoping there would be some sort of manifest, or application map, within LaunchServices that might be the source of my problem.
    Regarding using the full path: Good suggestion. That will clear it up when I use the command line, or if I were writing my own app, etc...unfortunately, I became aware of this problem because Netbeans is using the command in the abbreviated form I posted above (to launch web applications I am debugging), and I can't edit it.
    I removed Firefox from both Windows and Mac OS X on my machine, and tested the Netbeans functionality, it launched my application in Safari with no errors. I reinstalled Firefox on my Mac OS X partition and selected it in Netbeans preferences as the browser to use when debugging an app. When I tried to debug an application in Netbeans again, I got the same behavior...parallels launched. Ugh.
    There was a folder, on the Windows side of things, called something like Parallels\Shared Applications. It had a shortcut to Firefox in it but, I removed that before doing my testing. I was hoping there would be something similar on the Mac OS X side but, I haven't been able to find anything.
    Thank you both for your help. I think I might need to visit the Parallels forums for this one.

  • Authentication error with shell=/usr/bin/bash

    Hello there,
    I'm comfortable with linux, but new with Arch Linux. Recently I completed an installation with success but I ran into a strange authentication error at login.
    Before adding a user I verified the path of the bash shell and 'which bash' returned /usr/bin/bash.
    So I added a user with shell /usr/bin/bash and the line in /etc/passwd reads similar to:
    newuser:x:1000:100:His name:/home/newuser:/usr/bin/bash
    With this line I get an authentication error from login
    And when I change the shell to /bin/bash, the user is able to login with success.
    I have found similar problem reports, but not this solution.
    I hope to get some help with understanding this issue, to me it seems wrong to point the shell in /etc/passwd to a symbolic link.

    Thank you very much, falconindy.
    My first reaction is "But what if /usr becomes inaccessible", also /bin/sh is a symlink.
    But I guess with rescue options from initramfs or live CD/usb, this is not a big issue anymore.
    I have added /usr/bin/bash to /etc/shells.

  • Command /Developer/usr/bin/gcc-4.2 failed with exit code 1?

    Hey everybody!
    Im new to xcode and dont have any coding experience but am trying to learn the basics by assembling and compiling a calculator app. The problem is when I try to build and run I get the error:

    How many places do you declare calc_display? Are you perhaps creating the variable in an include file? Try posting your code here between two lines of :

  • CompileXIB /usr/bin/ibtool failed with exit code 255

    Hi
    We have several build machines located at different sites. Recently all the machines, on one site, started to fail with this error
    /usr/bin/ibtool failed with exit code 255
    during a CompileXIB of a updated file. By reverting the change line by line I discovered that the issue was caused by
    <customView appearanceType="lightContent" translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints="NO" id="119" customClass="CSIWhiteBackgroundHeaderView">
    where the text in red was recently added. If I remove the appearanceType the build succeeds.
    But I can't understand why this is only affecting some of our build machines. All of them are using XCode version 5.0.2 (5A3005). Furthermore this change has not affected the developers workstations.
    The committer usd XCode 5.1. But if appearanceType was specific to XCode 5.1 I would expect all the builders to complain.
    To resolve this problem I tried a deep clean (i.e. Hold alt - Clean Build Folder ...) & I manually delete all the dervived data in /Users/<myuser>/Library/Developer/XCode/DervivedData. But this had no impact.
    Another difference between the machines is the OS. The failing builds are on OSX 10.8.4. The successful ones are on 10.9.
    Any ideas?
    Regards
    Shane

    Our company has just moved from Xcode 4.6.3 to Xcode 5.0.2 and have experienced the exact same issue. Sometimes everything builds fine, sometimes it will give that xib file error. The xibs failing are not always the same.

  • -bash: /usr/bin/grep: Bad executable (or shared library)

    I am receiving these error messages when I attempt to use grep, egrep, or fgrep from the terminal:
    -bash: /usr/bin/grep: Bad executable (or shared library)
    -bash: /usr/bin/egrep: Bad executable (or shared library)
    -bash: /usr/bin/fgrep: Bad executable (or shared library)
    I suspect that a library that these utilities use is corrupt, but I am not sure how to determine what libraries the executables use and how to restore them if they are indeed corrupt. Can someone fill me in?
    Thanks,

    Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi Greg,
       Sorry, otool is installed by Apple's Developer Tools package. The other listings you posted are also identical to mine so I'm stumped. I also have a G5 so the fact that your items are the same size as mine is at least strong evidence that they aren't corrupted.
       You can use the application Pacifist, to pull a new copy of grep from your Mac OS X install disk. It couldn't hurt to be sure.
       libSystem.B.dylib is in turn dependent on /usr/lib/system/libmathCommon.A.dylib so there's one more possibility for a problem but there the dependency chain stops. Besides, if either of those libraries were corrupted, I would think you would have noticed something before.
       You should check to see if the following environment variable is defined: (it should not be defined)
    echo $DYLDLIBRARYPATH
    You should also login as another user (even if you have to create one temporarily) and execute grep. If that user can do it then the problem lies in the environment of your current user.

  • Is /bin/sh must link to /usr/bin/bash?

    I'm building Arch Linux on embedded system which CPU is sh4.
    I found there is a problem of bash package.
    It creates /bin/sh as a symbolic link to /usr/bin/bash.
    But my /bin/sh is busybox.
    1. I'm wonder how could I keep /bin/sh to busybox's /bin/sh? Or, it could set on pacman.conf?
    2. Could my root account still use 'sh' as its shell? I wish busybox could still exist as the basement.
    3. Is makepkg or yaourt based on root's shell must be bash?

    Thank you Allan,
    I have this question is because /usr/bin/bash require many dynamic library and I just failed login my embedded system after upgrade bash with pacman -Udd option.
    Am I right of the following assumption (Sorry, I can not 100% understand your meaning, require double confirm.).
    1. I can keep my root's shell as /bin/sh (it's busybox version).
    2. I can config pacman to use /bin/bash for install (I've compiled brand new pacman)
    3. makepkg have forced to use /bin/bash for install
    BTW, I found it is required bash 4.0 (declare function)  My embedded system's original linux only provide bash 3.0.  So, it took me a while to prepare bash 4.0.
