V8.20 installer triggers Windows Installer error 1931 referencing stdole2.tlb

I've just migrated an existing application to v8.20 and have created a new installer for the application.
When I run the installer, though, I get an error message:
Error 1931. The Windows Installer service cannot update the system file C:\WINNT\system32\stdole2.tlb because the file is protected by Windows. You may need to update your operating system for this program to work correctly.
I understand that Windows is protecting the file, my question is why does the LV builder include stdole2.tlb in the installer in the first place and how can I make it stop trying to update standard OS files? The computer being installed on is signed up for Windows automatic updates, so it IS up to date.

I'm sorry, but I'm not finding much about what we do with stdole2.tlb either. A few questions that might help us:
- With your installer, are you including any other installers or driver packages from us?
- Does this reproduce on all computers?
- Does this happen for you no matter what application you make (try making a real basic while loop iteration counter example)?

I cant install java SE in Windows Vista. I get always this error:
error 1721. There is a probleme with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.

If all else fails, your Vista could just be screwy.
If you're willing to go that far, and you've exhausted all other options, you could try reformatting and reinstalling Vista. (Or even XP, since it's way more stable. :D)
At any rate, this doesn't seem to be the file's problem, as plenty of people have gotten it working.
Have you installed any ... "distasteful" software on your computer, or tweaked stuff like a hardcore techie? Because it's quite easy to screw with Windows. :)

I've been trying to install Oracle Database 10g R2 on a RHEL 4 X86_64 machine (local machine). I've installed all the necessary packages.I'm having trouble setting the Display Environment variable. I'm installing the Database as Oracle User. When I run the Installer I get the following error.

I'm able to guess that it has something to do with the Display Environment variable setting.
my hostname is server.example.com
IP is 192.168.0.155
in my bash shell file bash_profile I tried giving the following entries
1)DISPLAY=192.168.0.155:0.0
export DISPLAY
2)DISPLAY=server.example.com
export DISPLAY
Then I ran the shell script..which produced no errors...
when again when I try to install I get the error as
Can't connect to X11 window server using '192.168.0.155:0.0' as the value of the DISPLAY variable.
I even tried xhost server.example.com...since I was only installing in the local machine and not on a remote machine.
Please Help me out on this

Which user has opened the X session?
Are you logged as root and then did you "su - oracle" or are you logged as oracle directly?
If the first option is true then execute "xhost +" before execution of "su - oracle". Then as oracle use export DISPLAY=:0.0

By Client Tools I mean Administration Tools, ODBC Driver and so on (all components included in OBI Client Tool option in OBI installation wizard)...
Just for your information , when I try to install OBI Client tools (same option in the wizard) in version 10.1.3.3.1 on the same windows platform, it works very well !!!

Why don't you run a linux Virtual Machine on top of Windows 8?

FDK8 installer for Windows installs wrong version

I downloaded and installed the Framemaker 8.0 Developer Kit for Windows. It created a folder named fdk8 as expected, but that folder entirely contains the 7.2 version of fdk. Can this be fixed please?
(I am surprised no one has complained before; is nobody using fdk8?)

Premier Elements 11 Windows installer problems

I am having a problem installing Premier Elements 11on my Windows 8 (64 bit) Laptop. I purchased the Elements Combo pack and when I install Photoshop Elements it works flawlessly. However, when I attemp to install Premier Elements it asks me to choose my installation language then I get an unusual Windows Installer screen and it will not let me advance any further.
This is the Windows Installer screen that pops up after it tries to configure the installation process:

Have there been any reports of a faulty installer with Premier in the Boxed set? Photoshop installed so seamlessly it's odd that this is popping up.

Eitehr your Windows installer is damaged or you run without sufficient user privileges. Run Windows Update to repair the installer and make sure to run as admin. also turn off any security stuff temporarily.

You could refer to
Released Versions of Windows Installer, that windows installer 5.0 is released with Windows Server 2008 R2 and later and Windows 7 and later.
Is there any specific reason why did you want to obtain windows installer 5.0?
If the target machine's OS are Windows Server 2008 R2 and later or Windows 7 and later, then we don't need to set windows installer 5.0 as prerequisites.
If the target OS is the other one, then you could select winodws installer 4.5 or the others as prerequisites based on that document about released versions.

Windows Installer Source List Update Cycle causes the Product Source Update Manager to complete a full update cycle. When you install an application using Windows Installer, those Windows Installer applications try to return to the path
they were installed from when they need to install new components, repair the application, or update the application. This location is called the Windows Installer source location. Windows Installer Source Location Manager can automatically search Configuration
Manager 2007 distribution points for the source files, even if the application was not originally installed from a distribution point.
Is very nice to use this features. The agent on the local computer will scan the registry. When he found a MSI product code that is define in SCCM, it will update the source for the MSI.

How to deploy rpt chnges to end users using Windows Installer?

We are in ISV and we develop an integrated suite of business management applications. We use Crystal Reports extensively in these applications. We currently deploy 717 rpt files with our suite.
Because rpt files are not versioned, we are having problems deploying rpt changes to our end users using Windows Installer. Windows Installer assumes that non-versioned files contain user data, so if the file exists on the users system, the file is never over written, even if the file included in the MSI is newer than the file on the users system.
Is it possible to version .rpt files? How do you recommend deploying these files so that if we change a few of then, we will be able to deploy the changes to our end users.

There is a Revision Number property in a report that is updated when any changes are made. You can access this via the File | Properties screen, but I am not sure if you can use it in an installer.

Unable to install itunes 10.5 after update issue. "windows installer package error"

So when the update for itunes happened, it wiped my ipod, and then my ipod would not work with itunes. So I uninstalled itunes and tried to reinstall it and it gives me that error message. "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor." I have tried all the fixes from deleting everything to running command prompts. I think i tried everything.
Method 1: Right click on the setup file and, from the drop down menu, select 'run as administrator'
Method 2: Open command prompt in elevated mode and, then unregistered and re-register Windows Installer.
1. In the Start search box and then type 'cmd', when the command application appears at the top of the start window, right click on it and, from the drop down menu, select 'run as administrator' and type each of these commands in the command prompt and press Enter
   • msiexec /unregister
   • msiexec /regserver
msiexec.exe belongs to the Windows Installer Component and is used to install new programs that use Windows Installer package files (MSI)

Method 3: Start the Windows Installer service
1. Click Start, type Services.msc and press {ENTER}
2. Double-click Windows Installer
3. Set the Startup type of Windows Installer to Manual
4. Click Start to start the service. Note down the error message if any.
5. Click OK.
If the above mentioned steps don’t resolve the issue, then
follow the steps and check whether you can resolve the issue:
Method 4: Empty your Temp directory and restart
1.       Choose Start > Computer
2.       In Computer, open the "C:" drive.
3.       Open the Users folder.
4.       Double-click the folder titled with your username.
5.       If you see an AppData folder, skip to step 10. If you don't see an AppData folder, proceed to the next step.
6.       Choose Organize > Folder and Search Options.
7.       Click the View tab.
8.       Select the option to "Show hidden files and folders." (In Windows 7 this option will be called "Show hidden files, folders, and drives").
9.       Click OK.
10.    Double-click the AppData folder to open it. If Windows needs your permission to continue click Continue.
11.    Double-click the Local folder to open it.
12.    Right-click on the Temp folder and choose Delete.
13.    In the confirmation dialog that appears click Yes.
14.    If you are unable to delete the Temp folder, close all programs, especially those in the Notification area ("System Tray") of the Windows Task bar and repeat step 12.
15.    Restart your computer.
Method 5: Removing iTunes
Note: iTunes Store purchases or songs imported from CDs are saved in your My Music folder by default and are not deleted by removing iTunes.
1.       Quit iTunes.
2.       From the Start menu, click Control Panel.
3.       In Control Panel, click Uninstall a program. The Programs and Features Control Panel opens.
Alternately, in Classic Panel of Control Panel, click Programs and Features.
4.       Select iTunes from the list of currently installed programs, then click Uninstall.
5.       When asked if you would like to remove iTunes, click Yes.
6.       After the uninstallation is complete, do not restart your computer if you are prompted to.
7.       If other program entries were listed for iTunes in Programs and Features remove those as well.
8.       In Programs and Features, also remove any iPod Updater applications that are listed in the same fashion as you removed iTunes.
Method 6: You may also try downloading the Windows Installer Cleanup utility and run that to remove the leftover ITunes installer files that may be causing issues with your current installation.

I had the same error in with the i-tunes installation and i did this and it worked.... This works for any i tunes that fails to install itself on 64 Bit
You have to go into your registry.
Start, run, type in “regedit”.
Next go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

To the right you’ll see WOW64. Double click on it, or right click on it and click on modify. Change the setting from 1 to 0.
Next, go to the start menu again and type in the search box: “services.msc”.
Look for and find the Windows Installer service.
Double click on it and tell it to stop. Next, tell it to start.
You should now be able to install your programs.

I was able to install quick time just fine. All of the other apple software associated with itunes installed fine but itunes did not. Im not sure if there is a virus that could do this. I didnt delete anything but apple folders.
I have tried other things but i cant remember exactly there were.
When the install process for itunes is running it changes with the error message shows up during install.

I should have posted this earlier, but anyway. I restored my laptop to factory version after backing up any useful data, and the first thing I the laptop was restored was connect to the internet, download and install the latest version of iTunes. And Bingo! It worked.
