Validate e-mail sent by utl_smtp using forms

Question

I am sending an e-mail using utl_smtp in a when button pressed trigger. I am trying to figure out if the e-mail was successful other than the receipt of an e-mail. I want to display an alert, but am not sure what to look for that will let me know that the package worked. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Instead of using directly the utl_smtp calls,create a procedures for each call from utl_smtp and raise an exception if it is not sucessful.
Please see example below:

utl_smtp.mail(v_mail_connection_c,P_EMAIL_ADDRESS);
EXCEPTION
WHEN OTHERS THEN
raise_application_error(-20900, 'Error in PKG_MAIL.FROM_WHO' ||
' Error code: ' || SQLCODE ||'Error Message: ' || SQLERRM);
END from_who;
PROCEDURE close_mail_server IS
-- Close Mail Connection
BEGIN
utl_smtp.quit(v_mail_connection_c);
EXCEPTION
WHEN OTHERS THEN
raise_application_error(-20900, 'Error in PKG_MAIL.CLOSE_MAIL_SERVER' ||
' Error code: ' || SQLCODE ||'Error Message: ' || SQLERRM);
END close_mail_server; etc.
Then capture this exception in your form.
