Validate Numeric values in a varchar2 column

Hi All,
I am looking for some advise on the following approach.
My Problem:
I have a table test1( age varchar2(3) );
I have another table test2( Nage number );
I am trying to write a procedure which selects records from test1
validate that age columns has only numeric data and then insert it into test2.
FYI age being varchar2 in test1 can have data as
11a ,111 , 222,wed,thu, th5 etc.
I want to be able to reject record which has any characters
(11a,wed,thu,th5 ) in this case.
I have worked in Visual basic and there is afunction called IsNumber to do this Job? Is there any Oracle funtion?
Also ,
One way of doing it is using to_number function ( or any number fns like max )
which would fail and I will capture that in exception section as shown below.
Declare
a number;
begin
-- This assignment fails and raises exception --
a:= to_number('11a',999);
If ok do my processing
EXception
when others then
-- reject record
end;

  • SQL LOADER. Numeric values loaded as Varchar2 characters

    Dear all,
    please I need your help in this little problem . I am loading using SQL Loader a data file where a field X has a numeric value, and in the Control file it is defined as numeric value as well in the database table but the strange thing is that its values are loaded with the character "E15" at the end of each value.
    The data files are extacted from AS400 , cobol system and loaded using SQL LOADER in he Oracle database 10g.
    What could be the reason?

    We can not guess as to what you data looks like nor can we guess as to what your control file indicates.
    Post sufficient information for someone to help you.
    PS: 10g is not a database version ... post the operating system and version information too:

  • How can I validate numeric values in a text field?

    Once more I have a problem.
    I have a field in which the user should enter 10 digits in the pattern 999999-9999. The field must only contain numeric data and must be exactly 10 characters. I have a validation script on the print button, that prevent printing if required fields are empty or not properly filled out.
    I have tried two ways to work this out, and I'm not satisfied with any of them, as I can still print despite of validation scripts and warning messages.
    1.
    I set the field to numeric, limited to 11 characters.
    Display pattern num{999999-9999}, edit pattern num{999999-9999} and validation pattern num{999999-9999}
    Problems using this solution: When I type 11 digits in the field (ex.12345612345) I get a warning message and 12.345.612.
    But when I type 9 digts (ex. 123456-123 or 123456123) I get no warning message and 000000-0000 or 012345-6123
    If I type alphabetical characters (ex. 123456-abcd) I get no warning message and 000000-0000.
    2.
    I set the field to text field, limited to 11 characters.
    Display pattern text{999999-9999}, edit pattern text{999999-9999} and validation pattern text{999999-9999}
    Now when I type 11 digits in the field (ex.12345612345) I get no warning message and 12345612345.
    When I type 9 digts (ex. 123456-123) I get no warning message and 123456-123
    When I type 9 digts (ex. 123456123) I get a warning message and 123456123
    If I type alphabetical characters (ex. 123456-abcd) I get a warning message and 123456-abcd.
    It works slightly better as a text field, but I am not satisfied at all.
    Has anyone a solution to this?
    Additional I would also like the hyphen to emerge automatically when typing.

    I am trying to embed an icon, a bargraph with two values and a numeric value in a single column of advance datagrid. can anybody help me out in giving a solution for this...I have read a  blog where the code explains about the bargraph in advance datagrid, I want to embed numeric value and icon too including bargraph in the column. I am looking for a Bargraph which  takes two values

    This is a great exercise to get familiar with LabVIEW's array functions.  A great place to start is actually the LabVIEW help on arrays, located here:

    Depending on your data format, you can probably use the Read From Spreadsheet File VI to bring your data into a 2-d array.  You could then use the index array VI to pull your column out.  You could do this in a For loop and use Autoindexing to build your 1,000 column resulting array.  I would leave everything as a String format until I'm done. 
    This doesn't sound like a very difficult task.  Good luck!

    Hello -
    What is the easiest way to test see if there is non-numeric data in a varchar2 column? The column holds ssn values, but I am unable to convert these values to numeric data, because somewhere the column is storing non-numeric data.

    In the above program, value for the column total_emp is getting updated as 0 instead of numeric value. However, when I use dbms_output statement to print the value, for both the cases, before and after , I'm getting the numeric value for the variable v_total.
    v_total value is not getting updated to column value in table.
    table column definition for total_emp is varchar2(20).
    Also, I tried to hard code value for total_emp column in the above statement and it worked.
    So, the problem is variable value when used in the update statement it's not getting updated to column.
    Please help me.

    i have to make a query from a table that return only the rows where the occurrences of a string column contain a pure numeric value
    for example my table MYTABLE have the column COL1 varchar2(100)

    row 3 : '102'
    row 4 : 'anything'
    i want to get only the rows 1 and 3 which are pure integer so i can sort and compare them like number.

  • Sorting a column as a numeric value

    Hello,
           I have created a SQL Report using collections and having problems with sorting one of the column as a numeric value.
    I have used create_collection_from_query2 to assign my numeric value as n001 variable. But, when i use the same in my SQL Report, it is considering the column as string.
    Please advise if i am doing anything incorrect which is causing this issue.

  • Popup Key LOV, NULL and "Invalid numeric value undefined for column"

    I've created an item based on database column of NUMBER type and set the following properties:
    Display As = Popup Key LOV (Displays description, returns key value)
    List of values definition=select 'display_value' d, 1 r from dual
    Null display value=%
    Null return value=
    Display Null=Yes
    When I select "%" in the LOV and try to apply changes to database I get error:
    ORA-20001: Error in DML: p_rowid=1781, p_alt_rowid=N1, p_rowid2=, p_alt_rowid2=. ORA-20001: Invalid numeric value undefined for column N2
    Error Unable to process row of table TTT.
    If I set Display As = Select List, all works fine. But I need Popup Key LOV.
    Could anybody help me?

    I did my homework and solved this issue. First I would like to thank Patrick Wolf for the invaluable help he gives out on thread Re: Null value handling in LOVs The code presented here is just a minor edit to his code, but an essential one when dealing with Popup Key LOV items.
    Here's what I did:
    1. Create an Application Process.
    Name: RemoveNulls
    Sequence: 0
    Point: On Submit: After Page Submission - Before Computations and Validations
    Process Text:

    I need to add to the column value a numeric value.
    I try with #{row.bindings.Sal.attributeValue*2} or #{row.Sal+2} or #{row.Sal.inputValue+2} But I get an error.

    2. call row.get("attribute_name") to access the field value
    3. Perform the computation and return the value to display in the table

    I'm facing problems Checkboxes in a form.
    I created a form and report on a table. one of the fields on the form is a checkbox and when ever I want to create a new record or update with more than one value for the checkkbox I obtain the following error:
    ORA-20507: Invalid numeric value #:# for column COLUMN_NAME Where by #:# is numbers
    I think the error occurs at the processes of get_pk and process_row_of_......
    how should I change the processes to accommodate the checkbox values.

  • Oracle 11g 64 bit - "Value too large for column" when setting Varchar2

    Hello guys,
    I have a machine running Oracle 11g - 64bits. And I have a table that contains a VARCHAR2(2000) field.
    When I try to set the value of this field to a string that contains double byte characters, I get this error:
    ORA-12899: value too large for column "QAPBG1220_11"."MYTABLE"."MYFIELD" (actual: 2433, maximum: 2000).
    Although the value I'm setting is only 811 characters (€ sign).
    The weird thing is that when I try to run the same query on another PC with Oracle 11g, 32 bits, It runs normally and the values are updated!!
    Anyone has any idea about this? It's driving me crazy

    On the 32 bit, this works fine. I get the record with the values 1 and 2000 euro signs.
    On the 64 bits, there is one machine (oracle 11.2.0.1.0) that adds the row, but when I view it, the value shows as "????"
    and another machine (oracle 11.1.0.7.0) that throws an error:
    - "String Literal is too long" : if there are more than 1333 euro characters
    - Value too large for column .... : if there are less than 1333 and more than 666 characters.
    Any ideas?
