Validation errors on site [subject edited by moderator]

I am using Dreamweaver CS6 on XP. Suddenly, errors are showing up on a website I created last year. At that time, W3C validation did not find errors in the same code. The site has worked with no problems (as far as I know) since then. Please note: I am not messing manually with the code--all these errors were created by Dreamweaver. I went in to change a few external links (to internet sites) and found these W3C errors. Now I am afraid to update any of my pages for fear I will jinx things and the site won't work anymore with these errors. What is happening? Why didn't these errors appear last year? Should I worry about them? If so, how can I find out how to fix them?

Thanks! I did what you said (took out the ice:editable="*") from the template, repopulated (I think I did that--Dreamweaver automatically asked me if I wanted to use the template for all pages, and I clicked yes). However, there are still errors. All other pages I have looked at are still with errors very similar to the ones listed. Here they are below

• Redirect to mobile site {subject edited by moderator}

hello i have a website and a mobile site when i try to upload the mobile site files it ask to over write the main website files ?help in cs6

You can do this with javascript on the main site's default page -

If either of those tests return true, the user is redirected to the default page in the "m" subdirectory which would be where your mobile site and its dependent files are located.

• Linking separate desktop and mobile sites [subject edited by moderator]

I created a regular site in dreamweaver and then I made a mobile version usingjquery mobile, how do I link the two together so when someone search fro the site on a desktop the regular site will show and when someone searches for it on a mobile device the mobile one will show?

That is why better informed web developers use the Responsive Web Design (RWD) technique. I thoroughly recommend this.
However, because you have two sites, have a read of this Official Google Webmaster Central Blog: Running desktop and mobile versions of your site

• Finding text in site [subject edited by moderator]

I am looking for text that Find/Replace cannot locate. I've also searched through most of my files on my website, but I still cannot find this word, which needs to be corrected. It is obviously on the external server, but Dreamweaver does not recognize this.

This is the website for my department in my company and I don't know if I would be allowed to post a link publicly (and I cannot ask until tomorrow), but please find the screenshot below. If there is a way to share this without making it entirely public, I would be happy to share the site.
While "Chemical Hygine..." would logically show up under the Site Tools menu, it does not, though the other four site tool options do appear. I cannot find it anywhere in the site to delete.
Another clue is that, not only is the word misspelled and not visible in a Find/Replace search, but, on most pages (but not all), the link is broken. Again, I can view this externally when on my website, but can neither view nor access when managing my site within Dreamweaver.

Thanks for simplifying this for everyone, Murray.
Antimusic: While it is not possible to upload an Adobe video to your site, you can embed a video from http://tv.adobe.com using the embed code for the video. Is that what you were looking for?
Thanks,

• Import Business Catalyst site into Dreamweaver {subject edited by moderator}

I created a website using Dreamweaver CC. I added business catalyst extension and want to use its feature for the site I created within Dreamweaver. However, every time I tried to open up the business catalyst section, it wants me to create a new trial site. How do I skip this step and integrate what I already created using Dreamweaver CC? I don't want to have a trial site. I want to use what I already created using Dreamweaver CC with the business catalyst extension. Help!!!!

I'm afraid that's how Business Catalyst works. You can't just upload any site to BC servers. You must first create a BC account, create a BC site template, edit your template, activate BC modules, etc... If all you want is to host your DW site without rebuilding it with BC, I suggest you look for commercial web hosting someplace else.

• Spacing menu links [subject edited by moderator]

Starting from the basic initial setup, I am trying to move the sample Links so that they are underneath the title and side by side. Now they are almost all side by side, but the extra Links I added are dangling below the initial four Links. How do I space it properly? [content edited by moderator]
Here's what I'm looking at. I'm trying to get them all side-by-side, and would also like to get it below "Guitar Site".

1) Padding is only placed on the top and/or bottom of the block elements. The elements within these blocks have padding on their sides. This saves you from any "box model math". Keep in mind, if you add any side padding or border to the block itself, it will be added to the width you define to create the *total* width. You may also choose to remove the padding on the element in the block element and place a second block element within it with no width and the padding necessary for your design.
2) No margin has been given to the columns since they are all floated. If you must add margin, avoid placing it on the side you're floating toward (for example: a right margin on a block set to float right). Many times, padding can be used instead. For blocks where this rule must be broken, you should add a "display:inline" declaration to the block element's rule to tame a bug where some versions of Internet Explorer double the margin.
3) Since classes can be used multiple times in a document (and an element can also have multiple classes applied), the columns have been assigned class names instead of IDs. For example, two sidebar blocks could be stacked if necessary. These can very easily be changed to IDs if that's your preference, as long as you'll only be using them once per document.
4) If you prefer your nav on the left instead of the right, simply float these columns the opposite direction (all left instead of all right) and they'll render in reverse order. There's no need to move the blocks around in the HTML source.
.sidebar1 {
float: right;
width: 180px;
background-color: #EADCAE;
padding-bottom: 10px;

Clearing Method

Because all the columns are floated, this layout uses a clear:both declaration in the footer rule. This clearing technique forces the .container to understand where the columns end in order to show any borders or background colors you place on the .container. If your design requires you to remove the footer from the .container, you'll need to use a different clearing method. The most reliable will be to add a <br class="clearfloat" /> or <div class="clearfloat"></div> after your final floated column (but before the .container closes). This will have the same clearing effect.

Logo Replacement

An image placeholder was used in this layout in the header where you'll likely want to place a logo. It is recommended that you remove the placeholder and replace it with your own linked logo.

Be aware that if you use the Property inspector to navigate to your logo image using the SRC field (instead of removing and replacing the placeholder), you should remove the inline background and display properties. These inline styles are only used to make the logo placeholder show up in browsers for demonstration purposes.

To remove the inline styles, make sure your CSS Styles panel is set to Current. Select the image, and in the Properties pane of the CSS Styles panel, right click and delete the display and background properties. (Of course, you can always go directly into the code and delete the inline styles from the image or placeholder there.)

Backgrounds

By nature, the background color on any block element will only show for the length of the content. This means if you're using a background color or border to create the look of a side column, it won't extend all the way to the footer but will stop when the content ends. If the .content block will always contain more content, you can place a border on the .content block to divide it from the column.

• Live site display issues {subject edited by moderator}

Okay, so on dreamweaver, the website looks fine (albeit, often it doesn't resemble what the actual final site looks like), but my letters from my paragraphs are all scrunched to the left side. It appears to be CSS because it has affected all the pages, but I've been trying my damnedest to tweak different lines of code to no avail. What makes it even more difficult to troubleshoot is that in the "live" and "design" mode, they appear perfectly fine. However, when I upload the site to my host, the letters are all crammed to the left side making my "professional" website look like sh#t!
Can someone please look through my source code and help a fellow creator out. Thanks so much
www.11thworldproductions.com

I'm not seeing it in any of my browsers, which version of IE is giving you the trouble. I always assume IE is the problem when it isn't spelled out (it's best to explain the problem in your body, not in your post title, it will get truncated)?
In IE7 and 8, the entire site should be broken. There is a lot going on in your code that neither of those browsers can handle.
Looks fine in IE9 and 10, Firefox and Chrome for me.
If your issue is showing in IE10 or 11, make sure to turn off Compatibility Mode if it's enabled, that breaks everything.
It could also be a browser cache issue, make sure to clear that out and look at the site again.
Also make sure to run your page through the validatror at http://validator.w3.org to get a listing of your html errors. Those errors can cause display problems between browsers/versions/platforms.

• Create complex site with no HTML/PHP knowledge {subject edited by moderator}

I have zero knowledge about web design, i want to create a website that would feature thousands of users creating accounts and writing articles, and for that i think i need to create it using php language, my question is how can i learn it, both the basics,language and how to do it step by step on DW?

Contact Facebook and ask their team of web developers how they do it. Seriously, this is no project for a rank beginner. Without advanced coding skills and a very good grasp of web server security, you are in over your head. DW is a tool. It's only as good as the person using it.

• Import SiteBuilder site into DW CS5.5 and edit it {subject edited by moderator}

I have zero DW experience. I simply want flexibility and control over my site's content, which changes frequently. I also want my "favicon" opposed to yahoo's favicon on my paid site. I am grateful for any assistance. Oh, my site is www.teuwanda.com
Thanks Everyone!

Hi Ms T -
DW is a nightmare if you don't know HTML and CSS code at the very least.
Won't Sitebuilder allow for inserting code for an icon in your pages?
I am dubious that Sitebuilder will let you access your site files with anything but their CMS.
Have you ever used an FTP program to upload an entire HTML page to the site?
You can easily add a custom icon as I did here, but how do you upload the revised page?
Sitebuilder's structure consists of notoriously brittle Absolute Positioning which often explodes when visitors try to enlarge their text size. For example, see your home page code:

• File not found error on testing server [subject edited by moderator]

The requested URL /www/first.php was not found on this server. Apache/2.4.9 (Win64) PHP/5.5.12 Server at localhost Port 80
Using adobe dreamweaver with wamp server and getting this message while checking any file.Saved all file in ( c:wamp/www/ ) with php extention

Have you checked to see if first.php file is in the www folder in WAMP?
Have you aso tried:
http://localhost/first.php
or
Create a folder in the 'www' folder named 'test' and then put the 'first.php' file in the 'test' folder:
http://localhost/test/first.php
Do any of those combinations work?

• Can't connect to MySQL [subject edited by moderator]

Unable to connect to a remote MySQL database with FTP from 'MySQL Connections' despite all connection parameters being valid, just get "an unidentified error has occured" message.

MurraySummers wrote:
Actually, I was describing what you need to do to connect to the database with DW. If your attempt to connect is blocked by the firewall (because you are a foreign entity), you will never be able to test the connection parameters in DW. Failing that then you will have to do exactly what Rob is suggesting:
1. Connect to the database via the host's phpMyAdmin
2. Export the database's contents to a sql dump file
3. Import that dump file into a local mysql database
4. Configure DW to connect to the local database
5. Build your connection script in DW
6. When completed, export locally and import remotely (the reverse of #2 and 3)
7. Upload your script and adjust your connection parameters to use "localhost" for the mysql server name
It's a tedious and complex series of steps for sure. My preference is to always get an exception added to the host's firewall for my IP address - then I can connect, build and develop directly on the mysql server for the site. (and by the way, I much prefer using Navicat to using phpMyAdmin!)
What happens if the remote host loses the database file/s?
I recently had an instance where a certain well known provider in the UK managed somehow to lose all my website files and database files. I was only able to restore the site because I had a local duplicate copy of the site files and database files. I know it don't happen that much but its possible. You must ALWAYS keep an up-to-date version of the wesbite files locally - personally I never connect locally to a remote database because unless you have some 'automated' back-up either on your own local server or the host server this could spell trouble.
If a client updates their own site I pass the resposibility of backing up the database over to them, as far as I know none do, prefering to leave the responsibility to the host, great if they do - not so good if they don't or lose the files.
EDITED,
I think Navicat takes care of the automated database back-up, right? - I dunno about phpMyAdmin though.

• Your role no longer valid error message and cannot edit page

Unfortunately I don't have access to the file, am asking on
behalf of a
friend who is skittish about his skills navigating a forum.
His question is:
When I open contribute, and select the website I want to
edit..there is a
yellow bar across the top of the screen that says "your role
in this website
is no longer valid. Click connect to update your connection
with a valid
one" so when I click connect, it goes through some screens,
then it asks
what folder on the ftp server the website is in? before there
was this
problem, I could get into the page I wanted to edit, and make
the changes,
then when I would hit the publish button the old page would
show up..so I
could make the changes but they weren't publishing..but at
that point I was
getting no error message???
He's having those two problems.
Any thoughts? I don't know diddly about Contribute. Thanks.

Hi, This is because SSRS requires a Login to connect to the datasource to process the report when subscription will be occuring at its scheduled time. I would recommend you to store the credential securily into report server.
GoTo: Report>Properties> Click on the Data Sources tab and you will see following options:
a)A shared data source
b)A custom data source
Use option b) and click on option Credentials stored securely in the report server
and provide credential information and further you can use options: Windows credentials and Impersonate the authenticated User if you require. Click on apply button.
*You can use any option of them provided in first option(a) also using the shared data source which is having credential saved into report server.
Once you have done with above you will be able to create subscription.
Cheers Sunil Gure
