Variables in email reporting or quiz variables in captions for captivate 4?

Hi,
Captivate 4, cp4
I have been all around the forums without getting an exact answer to what I want to do. Perhaps there isn't one but, anyway...
I am trying to collect quiz information. I just want a simple collection of data that shows that someone has completed the quiz, which just a set of multiple response statements, and who that someone is. I have started by using Text Entry Boxes (TEB) to collect their name and assigned a variable (v_Name) to this to reuse the information in a certificate. So far so good and this works. I have set up email reporting on the quiz and, providing users actually hit the button and accept both messages, the email gets sent. All I am looking for in the email is that a user has completed the quiz. The score and results do not matter. Now, here comes the issue. I would like to record the user's name (v_Name) in the quiz results that are emailed in. No matter how many reporting options or marks I give the TEB or what options for reporting I select the information will not appear in the emailed report. I can set up a question slide to ask for the name and this will appear in my emailed report but will not appear in my certificate.
Any ideas?
I have tried to play around with padMail in the resulting HTML to try and draw out the variables but had no luck (I am a JavaScript novice).
Is there a way of emailing a slide view? Or a widget to do this (I have been unable to find one).
LMS is not a solution at the moment and upgrading is unlikely to happen as I am still trying to get all Captivate users in the office up to 4 from 3!
Is it possible to take a quiz answer and use it like a TEB variable and put it into another slide via a caption? E.G., $$Interaction1234$$ or some action script to make v_Name = interaction1234?
I am looking for a simple solution. I have looked into all of the post to database articles and they have been somewhat helpful but I am only trying to capture simple data so as the users can just be ticked off as having completed it.
I am not holding out much hope. It seems quizzing in Captivate is good for self-assessment and to provide branching but the reporting feature is a bit of a failure.
Thanks very much to anyone who just reads this and gets this far!
Even more thanks to anyone who is willing to share ideas.
Greig

Email reporting has so many potential failure points that (in my opinion) it has to be considered one of those reporting options that you only use as a last resort when nothing else is open to you.  LMS reporting is by far the best way to go, but that's just not an option for many people.  Adobe kindly provided External Server Reporting as an option in Captivate 5, but that also requires access to a server running PHP and at least some technical exoertise.
In your case, the only things I can suggest trying are to make sure your publish folder location has been added to Flash Player Global Security as a trusted location, or to upload your published project files to a web server and test from there.  Sometimes this email reporting issue turns out to be Flash security related.
The email reporting widget is definitely worth a shot and is very inexpensive when you consider how many hours you can spend trying to chase down these issues.
In the end, if you get email reporting to work reliably, consider yourself one of the lucky few.

  • Unable to see substituion variable in the reporting studio

    Hi,
I have added substitution variable to the reporting studio the variable name I gave as var1
and value as 2009,but I am unable to see the substitution variables in my reporting studio.
What can be the reason for it?
    Thanks

    Hello,
you have to quote the value because it doesnt start with a letter.
Every Value which you had to put in quotes in an Calc Script or Member Formula or so, you have to quote in FR Studio too. Planning accepts the value without quotes, FR Studio doesnt.

  • Custom Quiz: How to update and report user-defined variable?

    Hello,
I am a novice Captivate 5.5 user.  Thanks to Lilibiri's blog and articles, I have managed to built a custom quiz (all with user-defined variables and advanced actions).
The quiz is composed of 2 questions with 4 possible answers each.  Each of the 4 answers have a different score attached to it (i.e. answer a = 4 points; answer b = 3 points; answer c = 2 points; answer d = 1 point).  I have inlcuded a "Feedback Slide" that may appear after each question.  For example, if a person chooses score d, they will get sent to a Feedback slide that basically says they are wrong.  There is a "back" button on the "Feedback" slide that can take them back to the the prior question sllide and they can change and re-submit their answer.  After they have answered both question slides, they continue to a "Results" slide.  Upon entry to the "Results" slide, using "advanced actions" my user-defined variable adds up all of the scores to get a total.  Based on this total, one of three possible text captions boxes appear, depending on their total.  And....here are my questions (I have checked and re-checked the Forum and blogs for answers - and I am so sorry if I missed them!!)
    1) I have defined a variable that totals the points that the person received on the quiz.  I would like this variable displayed on the Results slide.  It can get it to  appear in a Text Caption Box.  BUT if a person changes a score and re-submits the score before entering the "Results" slide, the total score reflects EVERY score that the person has chosen (the scores that they originally chose and then changed are still included in the total).
    2) I want the total score a person gets on the quiz reported to the instructor.  I don't know if a user-defined variable can be reported and how to go about doing this.  We will be running our quizzes on an LMS (though we haven't chosen one yet).  I tried using a system variable (cpQuizInfoPointsscored), but I believe (after reading discussions on Forum), it will not work in my quiz if my scores are adjusted/changed.
    3) another question - would you like me to put this in a separate discussion?   I certainly can!!  There is a "Back" button on the "Results" page.  I have tried using "advanced actions" and "on success: move to last slide visited" but neither option will allow the user to move to the last slide visited.  Ideally, I would liek a person to be able to go back through the quiz, look at their answers and adjust them.
Thanks in advance for your help!  I have learned SO much in the last few weeks from all of you!

Hello and welcome to the forum,
That is a lot of questions, thanks for reading my blog. The most difficult part is indeed the reporting in case, you did see perhaps that I have not yet published the blog post about reporting questions with partial scores, third part of my reporting sequence. Have two possibilities that I'm exploring: either with Javascript, or with the brandnew Master Widget that Rod is pointing to. Watch out for the blog post(s), but need some more time. So no real answer to your second question for the moment, because you cannot control the quizzing system variables with advanced actions.
About your first question: you will have to so sort of 'reset' when re-entering the question slide, so that the total score stored in the user variable is decremented with the score attributed to the user in his previous answer. This means that you have to store this previous score in another user variable. Hope this make sense?
I do not get the last question totally. Are you using the default Score slide? You have to allow Backwards movement in the Quiz Preferences, but for default Question slides this will not allow the user to change his answer. I thought you were using custom question slides? Do not use the default score slide in that case, but create your own score slide, so that you can add buttons and actions to your wish. Perhaps I misunderstand your question, and it would be better to explain more, eventually in another thread if it is about the default score slide, question slides.

  • Reporting Quiz/Variables

I am looking to find out if anyone has done a lot of research on reporting quiz/variables into PHP/mysql for Captivate 5 or 5.5.  I know there was some work done with C4 but I can't find anything for C5.  If it works the same I can figure it out.
What I am looking to do is come up with a common set of variables to use across all elearning modules in our corporation (example firstname, lastname, group).  And then report both the quiz score with the common variables into a database that is ready for the variable names.  If someone could get me started I don't mind publishing everything after I am done.
    thanks
    Dave

Captivate 5 introduced a publishing option called Internal Server Reporting:
This uses server-side PHP and XML to record user interaction with a course.
Check the online help files and Adobe Blog posts (Google it) for information about setting up Internal Server Reporting.  You may find that the variables they've set up with this will prove useful for your own application.

  • Quiz Variable Not Tracking Text Box Responses

    Hello Everyone,
I am having a problem getting the Captivate Quiz variable to track correct responses from a text box. I am using Captivate 5 and trying to make a quiz where someone will enter in data that will be validated and branch off of their responses. I have set up several text boxes, turned on validating, checked the "Include in Quiz" box and the add to total and report answers boxes. See the pic below:
I am trying to branch using an advanced action that checks the cpQuizInfoPointsscored variable and branches them based off their score. But the variable always shows 0! (I set up a text caption to display the variable as I went through to check.) Here is the weird part, I have the quiz results slide in the presentation, and IT accurately shows the results from the test boxes. But for some reason the Quiz Variable isn't tracking them! Any help??

Hello and welcome to the forum,
From your question I know that you are using CP5.0, correct? This 'bug' has been fixed in Captivate 5.5. Was one of the users who had insisted (by bug report) to have all Quizzing System variables updated after each question, and not only when the quiz was done, on the score slide; now you are bumping into this issue: the score in cpQuizInfoPointsscored will be tracked and will have the scores attached to the Text Entry Boxes or for any other scoreable object (all show up in the Advanced Interaction view - F9) but only at the score slide.
I had a workaround in CP5 (have described it somewhere in an article or a blog post), using the Quizzing variable that IS updated after each question: cpQuizInfoLastSlidePointScored.
If you want to have the functionality of CP5.5 you'll have to track the total score in a user variable by advanced actions. It is not really that hard, since you are already using advanced actions, step-by-step
    create a user variable v_currentscore
on entering each question slide have this statement executed (if you do not have already an advanced action for this Enter event, and this is the only statement, better add Continue as second statement)
    Expression v_currentscore = v_currentscore + cpQuizInfoLastSlidePointScored
now you can use this user variable for your check instead of cpQuizInfoPointsscored, you understand that it is only updated on the slide after the slide where the question is answered? Let me know if this is a problem

  • Quiz variables not updating

I am experimenting with the quiz variables in Captivate 4. I
have a Flash file that loads a Captivate file. In Flash, I am
pulling some of the variable data from Captivate... however, only
some of the variables seem to be updating and I am not sure why.
For instance, I have a few slides with click boxes that are set up
    to report quiz data.
The following variables don't seem to update... at least
publically that I can pull from Flash:
    cpQuizInfoLastSlidePointScored
    cpQuizInfoPointsscored
    cpQuizInfoTotalCorrectAnswers
The following variables seem to be updating fine:
    cpQuizInfoTotalQuizPoints
    cpQuizInfoTotalProjectPoints
I can also create a custom variable that seems to update
    properly.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
The below variables gets populated once you start taking the
    Quiz.
cpQuizInfoLastSlidePointScored - returns the points scored
for your last question. You need to have this variable after every
    Question slide.
cpQuizInfoPointsscored - returns the total points scored for
the Quiz. You need to use it after the last Question.
cpQuizInfoTotalCorrectAnswers - returns total correct answers
after taking the Quiz. You need to use it after the last Question.
Below variables gets prepopulated and need to not require
    taking Quiz -
cpQuizInfoTotalProjectPoints - Total points for the project.
cpQuizInfoTotalQuizPoints - Same as above one
Please take the Quiz and check if the variables are getting
populated appropriately and let me know if it helped.
    thanks

  • Referencing Captivate (quiz) variables

Hi folks - we are using our own software to function as a lite-LMS and looking to use javascript to pass data back into our custom reports for both tracking and quizzing.
We have been able to GET data from Service-now using client scripting and executing JS in Captivate. So for example, we can query course info and get the logged in user (student) and render that in the captivate project.
We also figured out how to make javascript calls to move data from the running captivate project to the Service-now.com instance as well.
The last remaining piece of the puzzle is accessing the quiz variables from javascript running within the published SWF file: how to access a variable from a caption (using tokens: $$cpQuizInfoPassFail$$), so the questions are as follows:
    1.       What’s the best way to reference the Captivate variables when running Javascript from Captivate (using ‘execute JavaScript’ action)?
    2.       Are the quiz variables accessible in slides following the quiz results? (The quiz results page doesn’t let me add another button to publish results using Javascript)
    Thanks in advance!

  • Can I access Infoset variable from Crystal Reports

    Hi,
In order to connect Crystal Reports 2008 to the SAP environment I have the Integration kit.
I have learnt that Crystal also offers InfoSet driver to connect to SAP.
If I need to access SAP BI- Infoset variables inside Crystal Reports is it possible to do that. If no, then do I need to have the filter using the variable value instead of the fixed filter value?
    Please suggest.
    Thanks,
    Amogh.

    Hi Amogh,
the InfoSet connectivity that Crystal Reports offers as a direct Infoset connectivity is towards the classic InfoSets from ERP.
    see here:
    /people/ingo.hilgefort/blog/2008/02/07/businessobjects-and-sap-part-i
    /people/ingo.hilgefort/blog/2008/03/23/businessobjects-and-sap-part-4
In case you want to connect to an InfoSet in a BW system you would put a BW query on top of the InfoSet and then use the BW Query in Crystal Reports.

  • Query Stripping not working properly when using variable in the report

We have issue with WEBI document that have query stripping enable.
Once the query stripping enabled there is no data return in the report.
We have investigate on the problem, the query stripping function are notable to retrieve objects that indirectly used in the report
    as we have
    many variable in the reports.
    Ex.
    Var1 = object1 + object2
    Var2 = Object3 + Object4
    Var3 = Var1 + Var2
    Var4 = Object1 + Object2 + Object3 + Object4
If we use only Var3 in the report, the object1,2,3,and 4 will not be
    retrieve.
But if we are using Var4 in the report, the object1,2,3,and 4 will be
    retrieve properly.
Please let me know is it a by-design behavior, if yes please share points on it

    Hi Amit,
Thank you for response, however i already had alook on that VIdeo and it tells us about the basic enabling of query stripping.
But my question is when we have a Variable in a report which is dependent on the other two variables it gives me #error so is it by design or not.

  • How to use p_mainsearch parameter in basic search for a report with bind variable?

    Hello,
I'd like to extend the basic-search in content-area elements to extra records in my own tables.
So I'd like to use the p_mainsearch-urlparameter (which holds the searchtext of a basic search) into a bind variable of my own report. My report will be on an extra tab on the search-page.
Especially I don't know how to transfer the value of p_mainsearch into the bind variable of the report.
Has anyone done that so far?
    Example?
    Thank you,
    Joerg

I found out the following way:
    1.)Report
    1.1)SQL-Query:
    select * from <owner>.<tablename> where UPPER(column) like '%'||UPPER(NVL(:searchtext,'abczyx123098'))||'%'
    (Note: bind variable is :searchtext).
1.2)in "before displaying page"-section in "additional plsql" add the following:
    if length(get_value('p_mainsearch')) >= 3 then
    portal30.wwv_name_value.replace_value(
    l_arg_names, l_arg_values, p_reference_path||'.searchtext,
    portal30.wwv_standard_util.string_to_table2(get_value('p_mainsearch')));
    end if;
    1.3) publish as portlet
2.) Integrate the report-portlet into a new tab on search page. Run basic search.
Change to the tab with the portlet.
    For me it is solved.

  • Hiding variables in WebI report

    Hi,
We have generated an Universe based on a BW query which has 5 user entry variables with user exit logic coded for each one.
Based on this Universe we wish to create 2 WebI reports.
However, for the both the reports all the 5 variables are displayed.
Is there a way to hide the variables, so that on the first report we see two variables and on the second WebI report we are able to see the remaining three variables.
For all 5 variables, we have some logic on the BW user exits and hence we want to leaverage the BW variables and not opt for the WebI variables.
    Rgds

    Hi Free Will,
How did you manage to hide the variable, we have a similar issue,  I have created a BW variable that is populated by Customer Exit. The problem is, for the query to be filtered in the Webi Report it the variable has to be defined as "input ready", and this allows the users to change the data in the variable which I don't want them to do. If I don't make it input ready the WebI Report is not filtered.
If we could hide the variable it would solve our problem
    Thanks in advance

  • Print-time charting with shared variables on a report without groups...

    hello all,
I have an interesting conundrum; I am working on a report (Crystal XI) with no groups to it, just several subreports. Presently the report is run weekly and sent to the manager of one of our departments.
The report itself showcases all areas of the department with total tasks, longest outstanding task, average days outstanding, MTD tasks completed, and YTD tasks completed. Due to the variety of tables the data pulls from, I have it set up as subreports that simply display the data.
All total, there are 20 different shared variables that have been obtained from 10 different subreports. I have the shared variables set as the running totals from the subreports (hence, all are print time). Since the running totals and all the subreports are time based and are not actually linked to ANYTHING on the main report, I am struggling with how to set up the formulas described in the white paper, "Charting on Print Time Formulas".
The setting up of the two formulas ({@onchngof} and {@showval}) will be different for my situation, as all of the subreports run off of date information relative to when the report is ran. I've got all of the subreports that the shared variables originate in early in the report; but where to from here?
Would I set up maybe a date grouping or some other non-essential consistent grouping to make it work? The way this report is, it really doesn't need grouping, because the main report is just a display agent for the subreports...
As always, any help is greatly appreciated!

Let me ask couple of questions before trying to resolve this.
    1. The chart you are trying to built is placed in which section and is it on Main report or sub-report of its own. This is needed because if you are trying to access shared variables values in Main report, the section should be below the sub-report placed sections.
    2. Try pacing few test formulas in Main report and make sure the correct values are being pulled in on Main report.
If you are successfully pulling the variable values on the report, try creating a simple chart in report footer with the values you have pulled and see if its taking you somewhere...
Would need more information on how those variables are being accessed form sub to main or sub to other sub for example are you making an array of those variables and splitting or bringing it in as separate...

  • How can i display the presentation variable in my reports

Was facing a problem to display the Presentation variable on my report, however i managed to display it on answers, but when i try to display it on my Publisher report it doesnt shows any data.
I use to Select the Values From my prompt, and it shows the Reflection of Presentation Variable on my Answers Report. but i cannot see the Reflection of data on my Publisher Report Please any One Can help me with this.

and by adding space you mean that I use it as '@{ BbranchCode}'?
What I am doing at the moment is
    1. Write the given query in oracle BI Answers.
    2. Made a dashboard prompt in Answers.
    3. Made a report in dashboard using the Answers report and the dashboard prompt.
Up till this step it works perfectly fine and the data displayed in manipulated on the basis of the values selected in the prompt.
    4. Now what I want is to display this report in Dashboards using oracle BI publisher. For that I use the template builder provided for microsoft word.
    5. I login to that add-on, open the answers report where I can see the field in the rowset. I select that field and save the template.
    6. I open the oracle BI publisher and make a new reprt with data model of the answer's report and Layout of the one I just created.
    7. I open the dashboard and put in the BI publisher report in the same page in which the asnwers report and the prompt was.
    8. Upon changing the values of the prompt the report in the answers is still getting manipulated but I am not able to see its reflection of the BI publisher report.
The thing is that I am currently using this presentation variable to manipulate my reports in dashbords using dashboard prompts. The report is built in oracle BI Answers and it is working perfectly fine with it. Now when I use the template builder for Microsoft Word and open the template with the answers's report of this query I see the field in the row set but when I display the template in the dason the bases of this presentation variable the report in the oracle BI Answers is getting updated when I change values but when I use the template builder for microsoft word the the field is being shown in the row set.

  • Can I pass parameters from a dashboard via a dashboard prompt and presentation variable to publisher report based on a data model with select statements in OBIEE 11g ?

I have a publisher 11g (v 11.1.1.7)  report with a single parameter. The report is based on a data model not a subject area.  I created a dashboard put a dashboard prompt and link to the report in separate section on the same page.  The dashboard prompt sets a presentation variable named the same as the parameter in the report.
The problem was when I created the dashboard prompt, it forced me to select a subject area which I did (though did not want to) and then I created both a column and variable prompts. But clicking on the
report link completely ignored the value that I thought would be passed in the presentation variable to the report.
Side note :  My report uses a pdf template for its layout where I have mapped the columns names from my data model to the form fields on the pdf form.  I noticed that if I create a publisher report based on a subject area, then I do not have the choice to choose a PDF as a template type for my layout.  (I only see BI Publisher Template as a choice).
I see some documentation online that suggest it could be done in 10g.
    Thanks
    M. Jamal

    Ok,
I just tried that and it still doesn't pass anything to the prompt.
I changed the prompt to an edit field and I made the following weblink but when i click the link from an account it doesn't put anything in the prompt and all data for all accounts is shown.
This is the URL maybe I messed something up...

  • Possibly dumb new user question: What does it take to get variables to show up in the variables reporting tab?

I've been a LabVIEW user (2011) for about 1.5 years now and just got ahold of TestStand 2014 to try out as a structure for our future test needs.
I've been using it on and off for about 3 days and there's something that's been driving me nuts.  When I run a sequence and the report comes up at the end, there's three tabs on it:  Report, Steps, and Variables.  Report and Steps are exactly what I expect to see.   However, the Variables tab is always blank.  Nothing I have found via my technique of checking everything in the menus that looks vaguely related and right-clicking things on many objects and checking those menus for other vaguely related things as well.
I tried searching for references to it, and everything I get relates to the "Main" variables tab that you see when editing the sequence, not the one that comes up on the report.
See the arrow in the picture below:
I suspect there's something incredibly obvious that I am missing but it's driving me nuts here...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You won't see that populated when an execution is complete. The variables are worthless at that point.
If you want to see that tab populated pause the execution in the middle.  Or set a breakpoint.  Then you can look at the variables at run time.
