VCAP or VCIX

Hi Friends
I'm currently holding VCP-NV & VCP5-DCV certifications ( Valid until march 2017), I am planning to progress further on both the tracks, appreciate your helps to plan my journey
I was about to take certs in this order VCAP5-DCA, VCAP5-DCD then VCIX-NV, but later I found VMware introduced VCIX6-DCV & VCIX6-NV, so my question is,
should I wait for VCIX6 series, so that I can at least save one exam cost?
VCIX6 is equivalent to VCAP5-DCA+VCAP5-DCD ? or at least they cover both the design and admin part ?
Will my current certs can be used as pre-requisite for VCIX6 ?
Thanks for your support
Rajesh

I don't think you'll be taking less exams - there will be 2 exams for VCIX6-DCV and 1 (or 2) for VCIX6-NV - so you'll end up taking at least 3, the same as you would if you did the existing VCAP5-DCA / VCAP5-DCD / VCIX-NV certifications you mentioned.
VCIX6 is equivalent to VCAP5-DCA+VCAP5-DCD ? or at least they cover both the design and admin part ?
Yes, VCIX is the equivalent level of certification of VCAP, focused on implementation and design.
Will my current certs can be used as pre-requisite for VCIX6 ?
I don't know if that's been confirmed yet.

  • VCAP-DCA 550 Passed.

    Hello,
    I have passed the VCAP-DCA 550 exam.
Managed to answer all 23 questions, with 20 minutes left on the timer.
This exam is clearly all about time management, people weren't joking. I believe I did well on that.
    Resources used:
    - VCAP-DCA 550 Blueprint v3.3.
    - VCAP5-DCA Official Cert Guide (Chapter 10 - Scenarios).
    - Paul Grevnik's VCAP550-DCA Study Guide.

    - VMware vSphere 5.5 Official Documenation.
    - Chris Wahl's VCAP550-DCA Study Sheet.
    - Other interesting articles I could find on the internet.
But the most important resource - Joshua Andrews' TestTrack Lab - Profoundly helpful, and highly recommended for anyone preparing for the exam. Thank you once again for everything, Josh.
Guess the next goal will be the VCAP-DCD. Or should I say VCIX...
    Regards,
    Itay

    Congratulations!

  • VMA fairly urgent, would appreciate your help VCAP is tomorrow.

    Hi All,
I Would be eternally grateful if anyone had any advice on this problem.  I have installed and configured a new instance of the vMA, added it on the domain, added target servers however I don't seem to be able to run anything against hosts resxtop for example.  It doesn't seem to matter if I run it with local credentials or AD nada! the prompt just bounces back at me.  I know the credentials are correct for everything I have tried, I have confirmed system time, tried both American keyboard/UK, rebooted the box I know DNS is ok and have tried IP's regardless.  Its a long shot but if anyone could take a look at the attached screenshot and let me know if I am doing something silly I would be grateful.  I really want to nail this as its in my VCAP tomorrow, I feel like I know the relevant commands but want to actually test it.

Well that fixed it!!!  What the fluffing hell was that all about, hope I don't have to contend with that sort of rubbish in the actual exam?  How did that sort it mate?  What was wrong is it a known issue/bug or am I a muppet?

  • Sorry another silly question regarding the VCAP 5.5 related to the vMA

If I remember correctly the vMA got dropped from the VCAP 5.5 exam however it is still in the actual exam lab available to use (feel free to correct me if I am wrong, my brain is pretty nuked at the moment from study).
My understanding is that if I invest some time in using the vMA it may be beneficial can I confirm the vMA is ready joined to a any domain and available to use in the actual exam/lab environment?  If so I will try to master it and do everything via it during the next few days

You will most likely be using the vMA appliance during the exam.

  • Scheduling the VCAP-DCA

Did anyone else have a lot of difficulty scheduling this exam?
When I go to set a test date on Pearson Vue it only lets me select from "Pearson Professional Centers" or something like that, which is fine.  I have looked for available dates for 8 testing centers listed within 300 miles of Austin TX and have not been able to find a single date available through September.  What gives?  Normally I just schedule 2 days before I want to take an exam, but 3 months and no dates seems absurd.  Is this a Pearson caused issue or lack of availability for the labs from VMWare?

Try skipping forward a month, then skipping back.  For some reason the initial calendar doesn't always populate.

  • The NEW Community VCDX Mentoring Process!

    Fellow Community Members,
I am proud to provide a much-needed update on what has become known as “VCDX Mentoring”.  Many people have come to Karl and I asking about being assigned a mentor.  After much consideration, feedback, and discussions with the new VCDX Advisors, we have decided to do something a little different.  We believe the mentoring program will be more fluid, adaptable, and successful if it is managed by you, the community, rather than owned and controlled by VMware.  This is intended to help mentor you through the VCDX Defense Process assuming you have already completed your VCAP/VCIX Test Pre-Requisites.  It's entirely up to the mentor, but this is what we've recommended to them.
    Why the change?
Mentoring is a personal relationship, initiated and developed by one individual asking another to be their mentor.  It’s not something that should be “assigned”.
The two people involved (mentor and "mentee") can ultimately foster the relationship as they determine best.
The VCDX program leaders can focus VMware resources more on the strategy and execution of the program’s success and growth.
    Who are the available Mentors?
We will provide a list of VCDX holders who have volunteered to help out as mentors.  This is something they are doing on their own time, and they will ultimately decide who and how many people they can mentor. You can find the up to date mentors on the NEW VCDX Directory using the "Mentor" flag.
VCDX holders interested in volunteering their time as a mentor can be added to the list simply by enabling the check box on their profile through the new directory's self service option.  There is NO TIME limit on when current VCDX's can sign up to be a mentor.  I want to thank those that have already stepped up to be a volunteer prior to this announcement.  Each of the volunteers have agreed to follow some very basic Mentoring Guidelines.
UPDATED Note:  It has always been stated in the Panelist Code of Conduct than panelists are not available as mentors.  This is also documented in the Mentoring Guidelines above.  However, we are looking into a possible change to the policy whereas "retired" panelists after a certain time may become eligible to be mentors.  However, until that time any and all previous and current panelists are identified in the directory and cannot enable the self service tag to be mentor.  We hope to have more on this in the coming months now that the directory is live.
How does having a Mentor help?
All mentors have been through this process. They understand what you will experience and the work involved. They have been given some basic guidelines as to what they should and should not be doing as mentors, as well as “Mentoring 101” materials to help them.  Having a mentor is having someone to guide you; they are not there to do it for you.  It’s entirely up to the mentor to provide the level of guidance they feel is appropriate.
How do I get a mentor?
That’s 100% up to you! You simply need to look at the New VCDX Directory, filter for mentors, and decide whom YOU think you might connect with best.  The relationship between you and the person you are asking for help is very personal.  Maybe you know someone on the list, maybe you greatly respect someone on the list. Drop them an email and start the discussions!
We hope this will grow on its own through the community. We will make sure the list of available mentor volunteers stays updated.  We will also post new mentoring resources as they become available that will help the mentor and in turn help you.  Outside of that, it’s between you and your new mentor to decide what works best to help you succeed.

Since the new VCDX Directory is now live with the 'Mentor" flag available, we'd like to ensure that everyone signed up on the previous spreadsheet is tagged as a mentor.  Going forward that is going to be the system of record and we will retire the sign up form and spreadsheet.

  • Windows 7 Pro SP1 x64 wont install Internet Explorer 10

    Hey all,
Having an issue on my clients machine and I have yet to figure it out. The machine is a Dell Latitude E6330 running a 64-bit Windows 7 Professional SP1 install. Currently the machine has Internet Explorer 9 on it which is unacceptable due to compatibility
with a client website he uses.
Every single time Windows Updates are ran everything will update and install correctly except for
KB2830477 and Internet Explorer 10 giving me Error Codes
    800736B3 and 9C59.
I have attempted installing these two updates manually by downloading them from Microsoft website and installing them in different orders. KB2830477 says that it's not compatible with my system and IE 10 simply fails to install.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, I've hit a wall here.

Method 1:The System File Checker tool
To determine whether the issue that you are experiencing is caused by one or more system files that are used by Windows Vista, run the System File Checker tool. The System File Checker tool scans system files and replaces incorrect versions of the
system files by using the correct versions.
To run the System File Checker tool, follow these steps:
    1.    Click
Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
    2.    Right-click
cmd in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click
    Continue
    3.    At the command prompt, the following line, and then press ENTER:
    sfc /scannow
For more information visit the following link:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936212
Now you can try to perform the Windows update and check if the issue persists.
    Method  2:
System resources, such as file data, registry data, and even in-memory data, can develop inconsistencies during the lifetime of the operating system. These inconsistencies might be caused by various hardware failures or might be caused by software
issues. In some cases, these inconsistencies can affect the Windows servicing store, and they can cause software updates not to work. The System Update Readiness Tool tries to resolve these inconsistencies.
After you download the System Update Readiness Tool, it runs a onetime scan for inconsistencies that might prevent future servicing operations. This scan typically takes less than 15 minutes to run. However, the tool might take significantly longer
on some computers. The Windows Update progress bar is not updated during the scan, and progress seems to stop at 60% complete for some time. This behavior is expected. The scan is still running and you should not cancel the update.
For more information and to download the “System update readiness tool” visit the following link:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
Method  3: You may also try to perform a “Clean boot” and check if the issue persists.
    NOTE: THIRD PARTY SOFTWARE DISCLAIMER
Using Third Party Software, including hardware drivers can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Third Party Software can be solved. Using
Third Party Software is at your own risk.
    Clean boot:
Note If the computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may prevent you from following these steps. We strongly recommend that you do not use the System Configuration utility to modify the advanced boot
options on the computer unless a Microsoft support engineer directs you to do this. Doing this may make the computer unusable.
    a.
Log on to the computer by using an account that has administrator rights.
    b.    Click Start, type
msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER to start the System Configuration Utility. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click
    Continue.
    c.     On the General tab, click
Selective Startup, and then click to clear the Load startup items check box. (The
Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.)
    d.    On the Services
tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click
    Disable all.
Note Following this step lets Microsoft services continue to run. These services include Networking, Plug and Play, Event Logging, Error Reporting, and other services. If you disable these services, you may permanently delete all restore points.
Do not do this if you want to use the System Restore utility together with existing restore points.
    e.    Click OK, and then click
    Restart.
Note: Reset the computer to start as usual
After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:
    a.     Click Start, type
msconfig.exe in theStart Search box, and then press ENTER. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click
    Continue.
    b.
On the General tab, click the
Normal Startup option, and then click OK.
    c.     When you are prompted to restart the computer, click
    Restart.

  • VCAP5-DCD Experience

    Hello,
Last week i passed my VDCD550 exam and got VCAP5-DCD certification, so i guess i have some experience to share.
Last few years i worked at PM/management positions at various integrators but recently decided to go more technical again. So i updated my VCP4 to VCP5 in february and was ready to study for VCAP exams. I decided to go with VCAP-DCD, as, to be honest, i didn't have much hand-on implementation/administration expirience last few years. On other hand, i have pre-saled and designed some environments, so choose design path was obvious decision.
    My studing materials were:
VMware Press – Official VCAP5-DCD Certification Guide
VMware vSphere Design by Forbes Guthrie & Scott Lowe
VMware vSphere 5.1 Clustering Deepdive by Duncan Epping & Frank Denneman
Managing and Optimizing VMware vSphere Deployments  by Sean Crookston and Harley Stagner
vSphere Design Pocketbook eBook by Frank Dennenman
My notes from VCP5 preparations (lifehack: i use Microsoft OneNote for various work and personal life related notes and it just awesome, it has really nice Windows desktop app, plus it stores data in the cloud, so you can always use mobile apps to check on content and alter it a little bit, if necessary)
Articles and white papers from exam blueprint
Great series of "Architectural Decisions" posts by Josh Odgers http://www.joshodgers.com/architectural-decisions/
It was obviously overkill, as you don't need so much data to pass exam (and to be honest, deep technical knowledge isn't needed to pass it), but as i plan to pursue this field of work futher (and may be even continue to VCDX certification), more knowledge won't hurt.
When studying it's better to pay close attention to definitions of requirements, assumptions, constraints, risks and differences between them. Sometimes they are close to each other and phrasing matters very much. Good thing to do is review design you have previously completed at work and write down requirements, assumptions, constraints and risks.
Another point to pay attention to is how exactly are example designs in VMware documentation drawn, something like that will be expected from you. For example, during my exam there was one design 'visio like' question about storage. I've drawn all the objects and almost all connections and then was stuck with ALUA optimized/unoptimized paths. I mean i knew how it would work in real life but i just couldn't figure out how design tool was expecting me to draw it. Design tool kept on giving me error message that i cannot use this connector this way.
Critical skill for this exam is ability to map customers words and wishes to specific features and configurations. Descriptions might sound very unspecific and sometimes even cryptic, but hey, in real world customer very rarely give you structured and well-thought requirents either.
Apart from reading, it's very useful to complete some designs just to arrange your mind in proper way I used this:
Review of previously completed customer desings. Try to use same approach as Josh Odgers in previously mentioned article series: determine requirements, justify your decision, think about alternatives.
Paul McSharry's practice DCD scenarios: http://www.elasticsky.co.uk/practice-questions/. Use same approach.
On-line practice exam http://www.virtualtiers.net This tool is absolutely fantastic, as it gives you look and feel of actual exam. It considerably lowered my stress level
Prepartions took about 1,5 months and i thought i was ready.
Now to the exam itself. First, there is no test center certified for VCAP exams in my town, so i had to wake up at 4:00 in the morning and drive 5 hours to certified test center. On the bright side i had additional 30 minutes to exam time, as i live in Russia there is time bonus for non-native English speakers.
So, it was 42 questions and 4 hours to go for me. And it's when funny thing happened. I either misread exam description or it was written incorrectly (though i guess it was the first ), but at that point i was sure, that after that 42 questions i will have another 8 design question and exam description strongly recommended to reserve at least 2 hours and 15 minutes for those 8 questions. In fast, those 8 questions was included in total exam question count.
As you see, at the moment it seemed to me i had to complete 42 questions in less than 2 hours and then take hardest part of exam. Luckily i was wrong, but as i've seen clock ticking, i became more and more nervous. Due to that i didn't gave some of the questions much thought (maybe for the better, as overthingking something sometimes worse then underthinking). Anyway, i was done with 42 questions, there was still hour and half left, and, to my (very pleasant!) surprise it was all, i passed with 346 score. Well, it may have been higher, if not my description reading mistake, but a pass is a pass.
    To summ it up:
Know requirements, assumptions, constraints and risks. Practice determining them from practice tasks and real world situations.
Know differences between conceptual, logical and physical design
Know how logical and physical design diagrams should be drawn from VMware point of view
Try to think as an architect, always justify your design decisions, think about possible alternatives
Design some enviroments (even completely imaginary), or review designs you did at work. View this as a little mind game for spare time, if you have to sit in the car and wait 15 minutes for your girlfriend - why not design a cluster meanwhile?
    Hope it helps.
As for me, i'm now studying NSX and it's definitely amazing piece of tech. When VCIX6-DCV will be available, i'll try to pass implementation exam and yearn this certification.

    Hi Yak
Thanks for the write up, I'm planning to have a first shot within a week or so.
Though I'm a little puzzled, the 3.4 blueprint states 46 questions, including 6 using the design tool (Visio like), plus 1 master design item, for which a MINIMUM of 30 minutes should be allocated.
Wasn't it clear which was the master item?
When you mentioned "one" visio that gave you problems, you mean one of the 6 visio type questions I asume

  • Quick question regarding best practice and dedicating NIC's for traffic seperation.

    Hi all,
I have a quick question regarding best practice and dedicating NIC's for traffic seperation for FT, NFS, ISCSI, VM traffic etc.  I get that its best practice to try and separate traffic where you can and especially for things like FT however I just wondered if there was a preferred method to achieving this.  What I mean is ...
    -     Is it OK to have everything on one switch but set each respective portgroup to having a primary and failover NIC i.e FT, ISCSI and all the others failover (this would sort of give you a backup in situations where you have limited physical NICs.
    -    Or should I always aim to separate things entirely with their own respective NICs and their own respective switches?
During the VCAP exam for example (not knowing in advance how many physical NIC's will be available to me) how would I know which stuff I should segregate on its own separate switch?  Is there some sort of ranking order of priority /importance?  FT for example I would rather not stick on its own dedicated switch if I could only afford to give it a single NICs since this to me seems like a failover risk.

I know the answer to this probably depends on however many physical NICs you have at your disposal however I wondered if there are any golden 100% rules for example FT must absolutely be on its own switch with its own NICs even at the expence of reduced resiliency should the absolute worst happen?  Obviously I know its also best practice to seperate NICs by vender and hosts by chassis and switch etc

  • VCAP5-DCD - VDCD550 - Failed in spectacular fashion and UPSET.

I just sat through every last minute of the VDCD550 and had the exam actually run out of time on me.  I finished the VCP with 30 min to spare after reviewing questions.
I'm happy to take blame when I've clearly not studied enough.  I'll pay the exam fee and try again.  It's not even the fee that makes me so upset.  It's that I didn't feel like I even had a chance.  I've been administering a 5.5U1 environment since 5.5 shipped.  I've designed and installed countless more.  I sat through the 3 day vSphere Design Workshop which was suggested prior to the VCAP-DCD exam and had the instructor tell me he thought I was ready.  I studied for two weeks up the exam.  So why the hell did this test just steam roll me?  I think it was a few things.
    1. Questions with some or more correct answers.  When you ask a question and I can apply multiple possible answers to a given category, you leave that open for interpretation.  Are you scoring me negatively or positively if I pick one too many things?  Who is to say that I'm not right?  What's to say something isn't a risk and a assumption.  Maybe it's both, maybe not.  Maybe I'm getting docked for it, maybe I'm not.
    2.  Am I really supposed to draw 30 plus dependency connectors?  I know how to take an exam, which is to say, only answer exactly what is being asked.  Yes, you asked that I essentially draw that many connectors which makes the workspace basically unusable.  Maybe you didn't really want that many. Maybe what you asked for was too vague.
    3. Topics not covered in any course ware.  Ok VMware, you like Storage I/O control.  I get it.  Maybe there should have been a section on detailed configuration for it in the 3 day workshop I took.  Same goes for storage tiers with storage DRS.
I guess I'm just venting, but good lord am I angry.  I guess now I know what to go back and study.  FML

    Hey pcakes,
I had a very simular expereince,  I read over all the material I could get my hands on and still felt steam rolled even though I've been doing this stuff since Vmware 2.0/2.5
Here is my quick write up on it:
    DCD5.1 or DCD 5.5?
Here is the coles notes of my experience:
1.). I found the test very open ended on many of the questions.  For instance when adding a nic into a design on a design question, it doesn't state weather its a single nic or dual nic or quad nic, so your left to guessing.  Also when connecting items in the design questions do they assume the switches are stacked or do you need to connect the switches?  This was never laided out in the instructions
2.). Building off my first point I found some of the design questions could of used more instructions as to where you want to leave items on the page when your stacking stencils.  This wasn't always bad on all questions but some where lacking
3.). There was some questions in the multiple choice section that doesn't test you on your design knowledge but on how much you can cram.  Ie stuff you would just look up or find in 1 min on a quick google search.  I strongly belive these sort of questions should reserved for different types of exams or just make poor exam questions over all as let's be honest, people just look this stuff up and don't permently memeorize this stuff.
4.). I would of liked to see the exam structured in chunks so you could better time manage it but i suspect it was built this way on purpose, so just my opinion I guess
5.). I think VMware should do a new flash demo of how the design tool works so you have a much better idea of how to
I feel a lot of people don't particularly fail this exam because they don't know the material, I feel its a lack of understanding how everythings works in this exam.  For me figuring out how I assume they wanted me to lay out the design questions gobbled up so much time, I ended up missing 10 questions, 1 drag-n-drop, 1 design question.  I think had I been able to finish those I would of squeaked by.
None the less I'm working on some photoshops / visio of how the exam is layed out with some practice quetions which I hope to post here soon(Nothing the current tutorial doesn't show, just a better explansion with a section where people could help each other plan out desings).  Once I have it finished I will submit it to the people at VMware to make sure its not breaking any NDA's and posted it, if it goes over well I will try and built an interactive piece for it to better prep people for the exam.  I feel this is this exams greatest downfall.  I don't feel I should have to burn an exam just to "know" how to do it.  I feel the blue print was concice don't get me wrong, I just felt the instructions where lacking greatly.  You never know if something is connected write in many times, or where to place things.  This wasn't always the case but on some of the design questions I just said "I hope this is all in the right place"  and moved on.
After writing the VCAP-DCA 5.1 which I felt was extreamly well put together I felt this test really lacking.  I think if VMware wrote a new interactive tutorial on the drag-n-drop and design questions this would go a long way in helping people write this.  When I was at Vmware World prior to writing the exam I was sitting in the exam area and there was LOTS of people who have failed this exam 2-3 times and was writing again.  One guy I talked with said the first time he timed out on the exam, the next time he finished with an hour left.  That huge of a time difference simply shows how much time you burn the first time around figuring everything out.
None the less it is what it is, and I will be re-writing shortly as well.  I feel now that I know more so what i'm walking into and I should get it next time *hopefully *   If you want to bounce some questions off me shoot me a PM and we can bounce some study material off each other and see what we can come up with.
    Cheers and good luck!!

  • Error: The largest virtual memory that can be allocated is 0 MB

    Hi !
When I try to create virtual machine in my VM Manager I get this error when I supply corresponding memory size.
    How can I soilve this?
    Thanks...

    Hi
Did you get a solution to your issue?
I cannot migrate any VM's onto one of my servers as I get a OVM-4021 Not enough memory for migration error.
When I do a xm info | grep memory, I get the following
    xm info | grep memory
    total_memory : 8186
    free_memory : 7517
    node_to_memory : node0:7517
Yet - from the cluster master, if I run a /opt/ovs-agent-2.3/db/db_dump.py srv, I get the following for the same server
    {'cpu_idle': 0.98999999999999999, 'cpu_num': 4, 'ip': '10.30.32.62', 'agt_username': 'oracle', 'real_status': 'ALIVE', 'mem_total': 8186, 'cpu_speed': 3991.9699999999998, 'agt_passwd': 'PASSWORD', 'hostname': 'rrsyd112', 'agt_url': 'https://oracle:PASSWORD@rrsyd112:8899', 'master_weight': 0, 'vcaps': 'xen-3.0-x86_64 xen-3.0-x86_32p hvm-3.0-x86_32 hvm-3.0-x86_32p hvm-3.0-x86_64', 'agt_port': 8899, 'status': 'RUNNING', 'cpu_avail': 15808.2012, 'arch': '64bit', 'is_shared': True, 'mem_free': 0, 'shutdown_mode': False, 'agt_addr': 'rrsyd112', 'srv_role': 'utility,xen', 'agent_version': (2, 3, 0, 19)}
My problem is that ovs-agent shows mem_free of 0 - when in fact xen reports free memory of 7517.

Just started happening today. I'm not sure what caused it and I'm not sure how to fix it.
Nothing has changed on the system (That I am aware of) and there no unusual addons and it happens even when entered in /safe mode.
