Vector Images in After Effects

I'm trying to figure out the workflow on some motion info graphics for a documentary film.
In Flash I created a 2D animation using a layered Illustrator file. It looks very crisp and sharp when I exported it to quicktime to put into Premiere.
Then I created the same thing in After Effects to see what the process was like comparatively for this type of graphic.
The thing that strikes me is the After Effects video doesn't look as crisp as the Flash animation even though they are both HD 1080p. The lines are more pixelated in the After Effects. I just looks blurrier.
Is that because After Effects rasterizes those graphics and Flash does not?
The main reason I am considering using After Effects is it is obviously a more robust program and I might need some its features. It also might be easier for the editor, who is more versed in AE to adjust the animations and because it roundtrips easier from Premiere, but I don't want to use it if the animations are not going to look at crisp.
I'd appreciate hearing suggestions or thoughts on this.

Thank you Rick. I turned on CR for all the layers. I'm going to post a screen grab of what I'm talking about. I exported both videos in the same compression and both were made for HD 1080p in their settings. I exported the AE in animation codec to get the best quality. Here are the screen grabs from the exported videos in Quicktime. I would love to be able to have as crisp a picture in AE because I think I may be able to do more with it in the long run and it's more of a film industry standard.
If anyone can direct me as to what I'm doing wrong it would be greatly appreciated, but I think you can see the difference I'm talking about and why the Flash image is more desirable.

  • Bridge default opens images in After Effects.

    I am working in Bridge CS 5 (4.0.5.11) on a Mac Pro OS X 10.6.8. I am trying to open files (jpg, psd, bmps) in Photoshop CS 5 and the default is set to PS but Bridge is opening the images in After Effects. Where or how do I reset the default for files to open in Photoshop and  not After Effects? When I right-click on the image the default is set to PS but still opening in AE.
    Thanks for the help.

    I forgot to do so and had to recreate from scratch.
    Downside from resetting prefs is indeed you loose some settings, I always recreate them from scratch and have done so often in the past that I almost can dream this. Plus side is in this way you will learn more about Bridge and its prefs and will become more used to it. Maybe even discovering things you never new of
    I rely heavily on the folder panel and have only 4 main folders in the favorites that I also don't use very often. The folder panel gives you so much more overview and options, you should give it a try.
    Anyway, glad it worked out for you :-0

  • Opacity of photoshop images in after effects

    When I import  a photoshop image into after effects, the image always has less opacity than the video. You can see through it.
    I have tried every adjustmen or effect I can find to increase the opacity but nothing works. The photshop image is 100% opacity.
    I have tried importing as a comp too. Can anyone tell me how to get still images into after effects so that you cant see through them?  thanks John

    ...which means that you need to begin at the beginning.  AE is NOT the kind of application that lets you jump into the deep end of the pool.  Your experiences with something as simple as importing a Photoshop document, and the confusion you encountered, are blindingly-clear testimony to that simple fact.

  • Help!  Ideas for displaying ~100-300 still images with After Effects / Premiere Pro

    Hi, I am a cadet at a US Air Force detachment and am responsible for making this semester's end of the year video.
    I have the Adobe creative cloud and am familiar with the basics of Photoshop, and Premiere Pro, and I am trying to also learn After Effects.  I have a large amount of picture and video, and am at a loss for how to quickly make all these pictures into an interesting slideshow.  Software such as Cyberlink Powerdirector had a "photo grid" which would allow me to create an automatic slideshow of images on a 3x3 grid, where each image flashed into place one at a time.  I am looking for automated processes or tutorials to feed my images into and have a modern effect of displaying the images.
    If anyone has any idea for a template or where to start on handling a large amount of still images in After Effects or Premiere Pro, I could definitely use a point in the right direction!

  • Jagged Edges on Raster Images in After Effects/Encore

    I've been working on a project that uses movie files made in After Effects and then brought into Encore to create a DVD. The problem I'm having is jagged edges appearing on raster photo images - things like people's chins especially look jagged. All looks ok on my monitor/computer, but once I watch it on my flat screen TV I get these jagged edges. I've tried transcoding Progressive in Encore but that didn't help.
    Someone please help me!!!

    Yes, it's MPEG compression, and no, there is no "flip a switch" magic cure. Probably what happens is:
    - you are not suitably color correcting your image, resulting in oversaturationthat's bad for compression
    - you have thin lines and only slightly angled edges on the photos
    - you are not using motion blur
    - you have overcranked our TV's colors
    - the TV does some image processing/ scaling/ frame rate coversion
    These ad a million other things will conribute to percception of poor video, but as I said, geerally there is no simple solution here. Compression isunavoidabl, but there are of course ways to improve the results. You should do a little reading up on this. O the AE side you may improved by choosing suitabe renderr settings, using a tiny bit of blur, enabling motion blur, chnaging the motion of the items, adjusting their colors - whichever works. Again, no geeral recipe here. Good compression is a art we all have had to learn over the years ad the best advise can't replace persoal experience.

  • Image disappears after effect in HTML5

    Hi
    I am using Captivate 7.0.1.237.
    I have set up my project as follows:
    Slide 1:
    1. I have an image that has an effect of Left to Right. When the project is launched, the effect is paused using an adv. action. Got a variable, say Var_1, in an adv. action to pause it: On enter, if the variable is 0, then pause.)
    2. I have a button to generate a random number. This number is assigned as the new value of Var_1.
    Slide 2:
    Have an On Enter adv. action: If the value of Var_1 is "n", then pause.
    Though I have not explicitly mentioned, the project moves to next slide if the Var_1 value is not "n".
    Now, this is working fine in SWF output. However, in the HTML5 output, when the value is "n", the slide pauses but the image disappears after the animation effect.
    Any idea why?
    Thanks in advance.
    Sreekanth

    The current frame number when the action runs and when slide pauses as per the actions is same in both SWF asnd HTML5 outputs. Here are the screenshots. The yellow colored object is the one that has the effect. 181 is the frame number.
    SWF Output
    HTML5 Output. Notice the yellow object missing
    I noticed one interesting difference in starting frame of SWF and HTML5 outputs. When I launch the preview the SWF (using F12), the current frame number is 0, whereas the first frame in HTML5 preview (using F11) is 1. I am not sure if that has got anything to do with the issue I am facing.

  • Vector Art Crashes After Effects CS3 Windows 7

    Hi there,
    I've noticed that AFX CS3 always crashes when I try to use Vector Art effects on Windows 7.  I'm able to turn on the effect, but when I start painting, it always crashes after a few seconds.  Any idea how to prevent this crash? I love vector art.
    thanks..

    Solved this problem on my computer by running After Effects in compatibility mode.
    My setup is different than the original post, but hopefully it will help someone else.
    Here's my problem and how I fixed it...
    System: Windows Vista
    After Effects CS4
    Vector Paint
    After drawing a a third small line, AfterFX would lock up and the screen would go semi transparent. Turning Open GL settings didn't help.
    Closed AfterFX, and righ-clicked on the After Effects shortcut.  Chose Properties->Shortcut tab->Compatibility->Checked "Run this program in compatibily mode for "Windows XP (Service Pack 2).
    All other settings left unchecked.
    Hit OK.
    Relaunch AfterFX and the Vector Paint effect works great now!

  • Make my vector scaleable in After Effects CC 2014 - Continuously Rasterize Button?

    Side Note: I'm a beginner, so please go easy on me. This includes explaining things to me like I've never touched the program before.
    Hello! I was watching this tutorial here that displayed how to make a .ai file in After Effects not get pixelated when scaled up. In order to do this however, they press this button here (I'm referring to the button that the mouse is hovering over):
    That button is not in CC 2014, so I'm not sure how to continue. Could someone help me out?
    I'm happy to explain more if I wasn't clear, thanks!

    Wow, I feel embarrassingly stupid now. Thanks anyway!

  • Why does the export quality of my vector image degrade when effects are applied?

    Hi guys,
    I am unsure as to where I am going wrong...
    Basically, I created a patterned background on AI and imported it straight into AE, where I set keyframes for it to rotate. I added fractal noise (got my desired effect).
    On separate layers in the same composition I simulated ccParticle World, for which I created a shape layer to link to the texture - I added 'glow' to this. I also added another ccParticle World layer using 'faded sphere' to which I also added 'glow' and altered the opacity etc.
    My compostion is HDTV 1080 25, square pixels.
    I have Production Premium CS5.
    I am trying to export the video as Windows Media: HDTV 1080p 25 HQ.
    When I export the video in HD (using Media Encoder) the vector background from AI is slightly grainy and not smooth and the edges are almost pixelated. I have tried exporting the rotating background on its own without any other layers and it looks fine - it is just when I make the other layers visible. It looks perfect in AE too even with the layers visible: it is just when I export the whole composition.
    H.264: 1080p & 720p HQ seem to work fine, but I really need the export to be WMV to be compatible with certain programs myself and clients are using.
    I have got the continuously rasterize box checked.
    Am I missing something?

    Yes, I think so to the first one.
    No to the second. Please could you explain if its not too much trouble?
    How do I render out a lossless movie?
    Like I mentioned above, H.264 actually works fine.
    Thank you and sorry for my ignorance. I'm still getting to grips with the software.

  • Is it possible to apply a stroke effect to a Photoshop image in After Effects?

    Hello,
    I've imported an image (a maze) from Photoshop into AE, and I want the image to appear as if it's being drawn in using the Stroke animation.  Is it possible to apply some kind of path along which the image can "fill in"--similar to how you can do this with text?  I didn't see a way to convert the image into a shape layer on which I could apply the Stroke effect, either.
    Thanks to everyone who's been so helpful in these forums--I've gotten a lot of questions answered by y'all!
    meredith

    Followed everything you said up until using the solid as a track matte, where I got a little confused.
    The effect worked more or less how I wanted when I set the starting value of the stroke at 100% and set track matte of my original image to Alpha Inverted.  When I did this, it gave the effect that the solid was disappearing to reveal the original image, if that makes any sense.
    Is there anyway to adjust the brush shape?  Right now it is a circle, is it possible to change it into a square?  The circle brush gives an awkward edge line as the lines of the image begin to appear with the stroke effect.
    Thanks!

  • Replacing imported vector elements in After effects CS4

    Hello
    I have imported a layered illustrator vector file into my composition, dragged individual elements to the working area and applied transitions and effects. I now have the need to make some subtle edits to the original vector files and am wondering the process to auto update these items in the composition. Without having to re edit the composition again, this would be similar to a replace symbol in Flash.
    thanks
    Matt

    That will replace a layer's contents without altering your effects.
    You can also use a couple of other trick like editing your Illustrator art, saving it to the same name and overwriting it, and then reloading the file in AE. This populates the project's comps with the new artwork.

  • How to trace an image in After Effects

    Hi
    I was just wondering if it was possible to have an image (such as an eye) being traced into Ae.
    I want the eyelids and eyelashes but do not want the eye itself.
    Any suggestions on the most practical way of creating an eye?
    Masking? Photoshop?
    Cheers

    Photoshop would work.  Make sure you create LAYERS for the individual pieces of the eye you want to reveal.  It's also good to make it bigger than you think you'd need.  Then import it as a comp into AE, and reveal the parts you want revealed using animated masks.

  • How to create a hotspot on a video or image in After Effects?

    Hello, I'd like to create a hotspot on my video. During this video, I have a icon popup and I'd like it (when clicked) to go to a website.
    Thanks

    YouTube offer authoring tools in the video manager. Dunno about Facebook since I'm not there. Normal web pages require a suitable video player like jwPlayer to do any of this. Either way, your problem cannot be resolved in AE or any other video app. You have considerable gaps in your knowledge about web techniques and need to read up on that.

  • Is it possible to scale Illustrator files inside After Effects and retain the vector quality?

    I imported an Illustrator file into my After Effects project and scaled the ai file to 200%, but noticed that is pixelated.  Is there a way to keep the ai file vector based inside After Effects.
    Note:  I attempted to use the "Create Shapes from Vector Layer" and the paths all show up, but the fill and stroke colors disappear??
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • After Effects CS6 - Very slow workflow

    Hi everyone, my first writing in adobe forums. I've contacted 3 adobe support agents, but I didn't get much help from them. Recently I switched from PC to Mac Pro, having Adobe Production Premium 5.5 for Windows and now upgraded to Adobe Production Premium 6.
    First I tried a trial of After Effects CC and I was surprised how slow it is. Now I'm using AE CS6 full version and it's a bit better, but still pretty dang slow. (The video I made for adobe support explaining the problem is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jsZZpH0vYU )
    To try to cut long story short. In the video adove, I've created couple of text layers and couple of shape layers. Made them 3D. Added a camera too. When I move the camera, everything is refreshing extremly slow. It's like you're having 100 3D layers and very busy scene,
    and actually it's few most simplest 3D layers. The agents from adobe support told me to switch to half rez, or draft mode etc. But the problem is, I do not want to work in half rey, draft mode or something similar, with my configuration it should work pretty normal. Never
    had these kind of problems in AE CS5.5. I tried everything, updated the software, updated my Mac OS, disabled global cache, even disabled multiprocessing etc. Btw, rendering is okay.
    Is this the way CS6 is made? Is it supposed to be slow? Because, literally I got an answer from the agent that AECS6 is designed like that, in other words, to be slow
    I really have no idea anymore how to make this work. I would like to get back to my lovely 5.5, but I only have license for Windows. If you guys could help me, I would really appriciate that.
    I use:
    * Mac Pro
    * 2 x 2,4 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
    * 64 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    * ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024MB
    * 2TB HDD
    * 2 x Apple LED Cinema Display 27"
    * After Effects CS6 - 11.0.2.11
    * Mac OS X 10.8.4
    * I haven't had this problems ever before (using ae for quite some time)
    * At the moment no 3rd party plugins installed
    Thanks!
    Mirza

    You'll have to get used to creating Ram Previews and using AE's interface in the right way. You should really go through the getting started materials on the home page and take a look at the FAQ. AE is a layer based pixel calculating beast that will do a lot more to a movie at 60 frames per second than Photoshop will do on to a still image. After Effects is essentially Photoshop for movies with a lot more options.
    If you want to smoothly drag through the timeline and playback multiple cuts with simple transitions and two or three layers then use Premiere Pro. If you need to use 20 layers and 60 effects to create a stunning composite or motion graphics effect then you're stuck with rendering at just about any price point.
