Veiw contacts NOT in a group?

Hi, is there any way to view contacts in address book that HAVEN'T been put into a group?
Thanks

To be specific, in address book, I want to see who has been left out of a group. I dont really want to go through each contact one-by-one...
Those of you who are used to Palm OS know what I'm talking about.

    Hi,
is there any way to view all/any of my contacts in address book that HAVEN’T yet been put into a group? Or to put another way: group my ungrouped contancts into a group.....
Those of you who are used to Palm OS know what I’m talking about.
I could go through each contact one by one... but that would be very, very dull.
    Thanks

This one has been posted before, but it should do what you want. Run it in Script Editor and it will display the ungrouped contacts in the Result pane. Make a group called Special and uncomment the "add ThisGuy ..." line ind it will put them into the group Special.

Why are some of my group contacts not transferring from my computer

Hey, I see I'm having the same problem lately.  I keep entering new contacts to my Apple desktop, and ever since adopting Lion the new contacts refuse to transfer to my mobile devices!  (no matter what I try!)...so much for having my contacts always updated with me!

  • Contacts not assigned to a group

I've been working on getting my contacts and calendars synced up and going fairly well. Have a completely mixed environment: Outlook 2007, iPad IOS 7.1.2; Android phone and Macbook (10.6.8 but not in the current sync process).
What I've found after a lot of troubleshooting is that I have duplicate contacts and am trying to figure our how to find and remove them. Now before you just say search for them and remove one of the duplicates, the issue is more complex. First, I am very much a geek so know what I'm doing - that doesn't mean that I don't miss simple things now and again though but please don't assume I've not check to see if it's plugged in and turned on
I, like most I'd guess, prefer to keep my contacts grouped together. When I first setup the sync, everything was on the iPad as I had manually (wifi/USB) kept the iPad and Macbook synced. Simply setting up the iCloud sync from the iPad was simple enough and never really noticed any issues - doesn't mean it didn't start there though; just didn't see it.
In Outlook, there is a plugin for iCloud and I have that loaded with no problems. Contacts all came in and the groups all appear to work. If I create a new group in Outlook, I see it on the iPad and phone. If I delete it from the iPad, it's gone everywhere.
Now to where the duplicates are. When I look at the counts in Outlook - just because it's the easiest place to do it, the total contacts added up from all the groups is 626. The total contacts when I get the properties of the top level is 833
If I select the top level, I can see the duplicates, if I select the individual groups, there are none. I verified this on the iPad by manually selecting each group rather than the "All Contacts". Doing this, the duplicates are gone. So clearly, at least to me, what has happened is that there are 208 contacts (834-626) that are in iCloud but not assigned to a group. The problem is, I can't see them without selecting "All Contact" and at that point, I won't know which one I'd be deleting and would rather not delete the one that is currently and correctly assigned to the group.
Hope that gives someone enough details to give me some ideas. I've already though about manually exporting all of the groups one at a time and deleting them until all I have left is "All Contacts"/top level in Outlook and then deleting whatever is left and re-importing all of the groups but would rather not do that unless I have to. I'm guessing the biggest reason this is so hard is that the vCard standard did not fully support groups until v4.0 and Outlook is v2 or v3?
    Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure there is an easy way to do this.  In addition to the approach you mentioned of exporting the group contacts as vCards (which would probably involve importing them to Gmail so you could export an iCloud-compatible vCard), then deleting the remaining contacts and reimporting the vCards, another option would be to identify the duplicates in the All Contacts list and edit the name of one of each of the duplicate (by, for example, adding a "1" to the last name).  That would allow you to go through your groups and identify which one belongs to the group and which doesn't.  It would still be a tedious exercise though.

  • AppleScript to Find Contacts Not Assigned to a Group

Does anyone know if there is an AppleScript for Address Book that finds contacts that are not assigned to groups?

Ask at the AppleScript forum under OS X Technologies or check the Automator forum under Leopard.

  • Any way to see which contacts are NOT in a group?

Hi. In Contacts in Yosemite, is there any way to see a list of contacts who are not in a particular Group?
I've been using Macs for years, and I still can't believe that this is not a fundamental feature.  Sure, it's good to know which contacts are in a Group.  But it's maybe even more important to know which contacts are not in that Group.  (Scanning a list of non-members for people who should be members is a simple task.  Scanning All Contacts for people who should be in a Group, then checking each and every one to see whether they are in that Group, is a crazy way to spend time.  Sure you can dump it out to Excel or something, but...really?)  Not having that feature in a contacts-management app is almost unthinkable, and yet...I've been poking around for years to find it in Contacts.  So I'm hoping that Yosemite now has it, but I haven't been able to find it.
    Sorry to rant. Thanks!

  • ITunes for Windows 7 64 bit, Windows Live Mail Contacts not (all?) syncing

I have researched this as much as I can but cannot find a solution.
I had my iPhone 4 synced to my Window Vista Home Premium PC using iTunes just fine until January when the PC motherboard crashed. No data was lost and all contacts have been restored to my new PC with is Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit). My contacts are in Windows Live Mail (Windows Contacts) and I'm syncing via iTunes with "Sync Contacts with: Windows Contacts" selected.
However, not all contacts are syncing with my iPhone. In fact, I'm not sure they are syncing at all, although the sync function goes through. It may be that the only ones that sync are those that existed before the new PC (i.e., the Windows Vista contacts which were in Windows Mail). I have created new contacts on both the PC using the new version Windows Live Mail and on the iPhone since the crash, and would like to get them synced up.
    Symptoms:
    1) Some specific contacts on PC are not on the iPhone after multiple sync attempts.
I have so far positively identified one contact that did not sync. It shows in Windows Live Mail under Contacts, however it does NOT show up in my Windows username/Contacts folder!
    2) One Contacts group on PC is not on the iPhone, although two others are (they probably were from before the crash).
I have so far positively identified one group that did not sync. It shows in Windows Live Mail under Contacts groups, however it does NOT show up in my Contacts folder as a .group file!
    3) The same group as #2 also does NOT show up in the iTunes group list under "Selected Groups" on iTunes, but the other two groups do. (I do not use "selected groups" because that disables "all contacts" syncing, but the groups are visible grayed out on the list.)
    4) As a test, I created a new contact on my iPhone, synced, and it shows up now in Windows Live Mail Contacts; it also shows up in my Windows username/Contacts folder.
    5) As a test, I created a new contact in Windows Live Mail and it does NOT show up in my username/Contacts folder. I synced the iPhone again and it does NOT show up on my iPhone contacts.
OK folks, where are these missing contacts going and how can I get them synced??  Thanks!
PS: I have the latest iTunes 10.5.3.3, no updates are available. However, Apple Support/iTunes seems to suggest Windows 7 64 bit either "does not use Windows Contacts" (which seemed quite wrong until I ran the tests above), and also that Windows 7 64 requires iTunes 10.4.1, which I cannot install because I have a later version installed. I would have assumed the correct version installed for my OS when I installed iTunes on the new PC. iTunes runs fine by itself and in coordination with my iPhone other than the above issue.
PPS: This site seems potentially relevant, however is highly technical: http://liveunplugged.wordpress.com/2011/02/04/windows-live-mail-contacts-databas e/
but doesn't help with this problem.

I didn't get any help on this from the forum, but from studying around and experimenting with different approaches, I have come up with the following conclusions:
Under Windows Vista, Windows Mail synced its contacts with Windows Contacts [which are in c:\users\username\contacts]. iPhone via iTunes synced with Windows Contacts. Changes to either Windows Mail Contacts or iPhone contacts would always update each other. Life was good.
Under Windows 7, Windows LIVE Mail (WLM) does NOT sync its contacts with Windows Contacts. It puts them into a hidden database. If you have prior Windows Contacts and brought them along for the ride, they are still there in the folder but they are not connected to the WLM contacts database
When you first set up Windows Live Mail, you can import your Windows Contacts and they appear to be synced. (In fact, they are, but only at that single point in time.)
If you change any Windows Live Mail contact or add a new one, it does NOT change in Windows Contacts. It only changes in the WLM contacts database. It therefore does NOT sync to your iPhone.
Similarly, if you change a contact on iPhone or add a new one, it will sync with Windows Contacts. However, this does NOT update your Windows Live Contacts.
So, from what I can tell, here is what this means: to maintain a steady state, you have two choices:
Whenever you update or add a contact, add it in either iPhone or Windows Contacts [the Windows Contacts folder has a "New Contact" button], and they will stay in sync with each other. Then manually update or add it in Windows Live Contacts to keep those up to date so you can use them for e-mail.  OR
Whenever you update or add a contact, add it in either iPhone or Windows Contacts, and they will stay in sync with each other. DO NOT manually update Windows Live Contacts, but realize they are not always up to date. If an address needed for an e-mail is not in there, manually retrieve it from your Windows Contacts or your iPhone and insert it into the e-mail. [Having done that, you can right click on the address in the e-mail and add it to your WLM contacts if you want.] Periodically, manually delete all of your Windows Live Mail Contacts and then re-import your Windows Contacts into Windows Live Mail and, voila, your contacts are in sync again! (Isn't that great, I mean really awful??)
NOTE: If you follow course #2, DO NOT import your Windows Contacts into Windows Live Mail contacts without deleting your existing Windows Live Mail contacts, or you will end up with a double set plus the new ones.
FURTHER NOTE: I obviously can't make any guarantee you won't lose data if you follow course #2. Be sure you have a complete backup before deleting your WLM contacts. However, I will say that after experiencing a double set of WLM contacts (by failing to understand the first NOTE above), it was impossible to pick out the new items [WLM will now show you the date of entry or modification of the contact, so you can't sort by date], so I deleted all of them and re-imported my Windows Contacts and had a complete set again.
AND ONE FINAL NOTE: I have not tested how any of this affects Windows Live Contacts used online outside of Windows Live Mail, because I do not use Windows Live online.
Please post further comments if you have any more information on this topic.

  • How to add a contact to a specific group in iOS6

Whenever I add a new contact to Contacts (address book), the contact just gets added to default list. • Contacts not showing up

Im having a problem with my iphone 4. My contacts are in my phone when i search for them and also show up in my recent calls and text messages. However, whenever i touch contacts to bring up the list none of them are there. Does anyone know how to fix this?

    Hello everyone!
For all of you out there who have received phone calls, text messages, etc, and have tried adding a contact by means other than directly via the contacts app only to have your contact not show up ANYWHERE (except maybe in a spotlight search), this quick troubleshooting guide is for you.
Disclaimers: This can be performed on an Apple computer, I do not troubleshoot for PC's (however, anyone who knows their way around computers can easily modify the steps for a PC). This method can also be used if you sync your contacts via MobileMe like I do, and should work for the iPhone 3G, 3GS, and 4. I have the latest OS on my iPhone, but it should work with any recent OS. My iTunes has been updated to the most recent version.
Step 1: Open Address Book on your mac. Make sure your address book view is extended to show your groups in the left column. Under groups, everyone will have a group labeled "All Contacts". If that's the only group you have, it's time to create another one. Click the "+" at the bottom of your group column and name your new group whatever you want. For my purposes (as this was an iPhone issue), I named my new group "iPhone Contacts". Do not add any contacts from "All Contacts" to your new group, as this will be unnecessarily redundant. Close Address Book, you're done with it.
Step 2: Open iTunes and plug in your iPhone. Hopefully you have your settings to manually sync when you plug your iPhone into iTunes, otherwise wait until it's synced to continue. Click the "Info" tab in iTunes. The first option is Sync Address Book Contacts. Make sure this option is checked. Under the first subheading, make sure "All contacts" is checked. Below the groups box, there will be a line that says "Add contacts created outside of groups on this iPhone to:" and make sure this is checked as well. (Bonus info- Unless you created a contact directly via the contacts app on your iPhone, that contact ends up in another list. This is why you can't see it right now.) At this moment is where that new contact group you created in Address Book comes into play. Use the drop-down menu to the right of this option to select that group (remember mine was "iPhone Contacts"). Do not change anything else. Now click "Sync" in the bottom right corner of iTunes.
Step 3: Once your iPhone is synced, open the Contacts app on your iPhone. If it opens to a contact list, tap the "Groups" button in the upper left corner of the screen. You should see two or three sections. The top section will simply be "All Contacts". The second section will be titled "From My Mac" and will display both "All from My Mac" and the new group you created in Address Book. If you use MobileMe, you will have a third section titled "[email protected]", under which your MobileMe contact group will fall. Make sure you tap the top group, "All Contacts". You will find those "missing" contacts now listed among all your other ones.
Bonus: If you find you have duplicate contact names but neither contact has a full information card, you can edit the contact, scroll to the bottom and tap the "Link contacts" button, then link your duplicates to insure you have all the info you want.
Success!! If you have any questions, let me know.

  • Overnight my contact list went from 1492 contacts to 52.. With help from Apple support I retrieved all of my contacts.  Here is the problem, I lost the groups.  None of my contacts are sorted into groups as they used to be which is very important for me.

Overnight my contact list went from 1492 to 52.  With help from Apple I retrieved the missing contacts using Time Machine.  The problems is that the contacts are not in groups as they used to be.  Any suggestions?  I really need them grouped for business reasons.
Also, there are no longer pictures associated with each contact.
thanks for any help anyone can give me getting contacts back into the groups that I had established.  By the way, the group names are still there, but they are all empty.
    thanks,

What Mac do you have, with what version of OS X?

  • Address Book Suggestion: See who is NOT in a Group

I recently moved all of my contacts from Entourage to the Address Book in OS X, and am very happy with it. On top of the ease of use of the Address Book, its integration with MobileMe and the iPhone is wonderful.
As I organized and updated my 300+ contacts, I began to sort them into Groups. I quickly found that I could move people to the group easily, but I had a hard time remembering who was NOT in that group already.
I would like to suggest adding a view or filter to see who is NOT in a given group. That way, you can quickly scan your list of contacts, and add any that are missing, completing the group.
    Thank you!

This would work for contacts that are only in one group, but some are in more than one - rather than creating a smart group for every group (doubling the number of groups I have), I would like to suggest this be a feature of the Address Book app, much like how Home Sharing in iTunes 9 will tell you what music is NOT in your current library, so you can choose to import it.

  • Address book list not in a group

I have all my contacts syncing through iCloud from the iMac, iPhone and iPad.
I have a group called iPhone. This contains the main contacts I use on the iPhone.
It's easy to see the contacts in the iPhone group and remove the ones I no longer need in the group.
The part I can't figure out, how can I display all the contacts that are not in the iPhone group to see which ones I may want to add?
I tried to use the Smart Group "Card is not a member of iPhone" but it displays the entire contact list including the contacts in the iPhone group.
I tested the Smart Group "Card is a member of iPhone" and it displayed only those contacts in iPhone.
I am either missing something or this Smart group is broken.
Any other suggestions on how to display all contacts NOT in a certain group?
This would also be useful to ensure holiday list is complete.
    Thanks.

    Thanks.
I also don't have any "On My Mac" contacts anymore since activating iCloud.
It's probably a bug since the Smart Group properly recognizes the iPhone group when I use "is a member of".
Just not when I use "is not a member of".

I also have this problem, just from the iPhone 5s which makes my life crazy, too.
The problem of having multiple devices doesn't seem to help, but the odd part is when everything I am doing is correct, it still doesn't sync like it used to do before iCloud, and when we had to USB wire connect the iPhone to the Laptop to make contacts sync.
Might I add that I am not using MAIL on my LAPTOP?
but ?Britty sounds like her issue is easier as gmail sometimes can create duplicates so you are in good if you are not having that problem or nightmare...
IF ANYONE ELSE can PLEASE ADD to this THREAD? I would be thankful

This should be working and I have checked the CONTACTS on the laptop GROUPS , iCloud, vs ALL ON MY MAC
it just isn't syncing and in some cases I am getting a WEB DAV error or CAL error...-1
what is that? iCloud will not sync all contacts?
